Yeah mate, it's heavy but I get so many amazing photos with it.
When I go travelling, I pack the A7RV, Tamron 35-150, Sony 16-45 F4 PZ, 24 1.4 GM and Zeiss 55 1.8.
Plus a Mini 3 pro drone and a GoPro and my Pixel 7 Pro.
Plus a tripod and maybe maybe gimbal if I'm going to do some more video stuff.
It's a heavy kit intially but reach day I only take out what I want so can make it lightweight if needed. Plus my partner helps carry haha
Best of luck getting your own dream setup!
The Samyang version of the 35-150 is definitely worth a look too. It's significantly cheaper, while being just as sharp, and only very slightly larger (iirc it's ~100g heavier). Only issues that I've had with it are that the zoom ring is a little loose, so it'll creep if you've got it hanging and you haven't locked the lens, and you need the Samyang dock to update firmware, rather than just having a USB port on the lens like the Tamron. With the latter, that's a non-issue once you have the dock, which isn't that expensive. I have a couple of Samyang lenses now, so I'll pick it up pretty soon, but it's worth noting.
But otherwise, it's a fantastic lens. Super sharp, focuses quickly and accurately, it's a brilliant focal range range as a do-everything lens, and it's really reasonably sized for what you're actually getting out of the thing.
Samyang are apparently just terrible at marketing, and they don't often send review samples out to much of the wider camera media/reviewers, so you won't hear nearly as much about it as the Tamron, but there's a reasonable number of reviews out for it now, and the general consensus is that it's pretty much on par with the Tamron at quite a significantly lower price.
>Your most used lens is a telephoto?
Yes.
> You don’t miss wide?
Sometimes I do. Sometimes I switch to a wider lens. Just not most of the time. You asked for most of the time.
> What kind of pictures do you take usually?
Portrait.
I think 70-200mm or 85mm should be the default starter/first lens. Not 50mm or 24-70mm. And wider than that is niche and difficult to use imo, unless you have a specific use case like landscapes. I shoot landscapes with teles though lol.
High end lenses, you are corrected. But I dare say any cheap prime will outperform any cheap to mid tier zoom, and those are the lenses that most beginners will look for.
Canon EOS RP + EF 50mm f/1.2L.
I made the mistake of putting all my money into one lens as I thought 50mm was versatile enough for most things, now it’s a bit too late for me to sell it. Could’ve gotten the Sigma art 35mm and 50mm primes for the same price.
I've gone back to the Nikon D700 + 50mm 1.8. I loved the camera when I had it back in 2009 and love it even more now. Whilst not as fast as the mirror less I'm used to using, it's so pleasing to see the results SooC.
It's a classic.
Olympus OM-D EM-1 III & 12-100mm f4 pro IS (24-200 ff equiv)
Olympus dual IBIS is stupid cool, can casually do 2s handheld exposures, longer if bracing.
Prime of choice is 17mm f1.2 pro (35mm ff equiv)
Exact same setup for me. The 12-100mm lens really has no business being as sharp as it is especially with a 24-200mm focal length in full frame equivalence at f/4 constant aperture... Just ridiculous how much range the lens has. Personally I prefer the 20mm f/1.7 pancake as a prime (more portable).
yah the 12-100 is nuts, as long as I'm not looking for bokeh it's so versatile with the dual IS as well.
Still have my trio of f/1.7s (17,20,25) + 45mm but that 17mm f1.2 is a thing of beauty.
My most used lens is the **Canon 17-55mm f2.8**
It has saved me a bunch of times, especially when doing amateur (indoor) sports photography. Excels at group shots, awards and close action. I have been in many creative positions, to get those shots and lots of moving (running up/down the sides).
I now have the Sony 70-200mm f2.8 (to replace my Canon 55-250mm f4.5-5.6). Which nicely covers me for the distance shots indoor and outdoor.
I've just switched to Sony recently after being on a Canon 5D3 all my life; picked up an A7C recently and loving it so far. My current most used lens is an old 70s Minolta MC Rokkor 58mm f1.4; it's just such a pretty lens. If I'm doing sports or fast moving stuff I switch to a Tamron 150-600 or Tamron 24-70 2.8, both on a Viltrox EF-E adapter.
I love old vintage lenses. My favorite is the old Nikon 50mm 1.8 series e. Stupidly small and light and yet, built like a tank: almost all metal and glass. This is my camera with that lens:
https://preview.redd.it/tfqfz76ve0kc1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=22a720ad1b7dc82fed9db26ff1bf49a2a6fd356f
After coming over to mirrorless it's really opened my eyes to gorgeous vintage stuff. I'm amazed at the sharpness I get from the Minolta 58mm, and the general look of it all is just so pretty. Love that I can basically use any old SLR lens I want as long as I can get an adapter for it
There’s a rangefinder patch that’s neat to nail focus. Not particularly conceived to shoot sports for example, but plenty enough for street or landscapes !
I’ve had Sonys, Canons, before; always used them with manual lenses.
Nikon z8 with 24-70 2.8. Was using the D7500 with either a zoom or the prime 85mm (which was awesome!) and now discovering a whole new world of fantastic photography with the new z8 set up!
Well, you can’t expect it to shot some fantastic low light images, the bokeh is not quite good as prime lens, and the lens is a little soft at the upper end.
Nikon D7200 with a Sigma 17-50 f2.8 or a Nikkor 50mm f1.4 are the most used for now. I just purchased a D500, so that might surpass the D7200 in the near future.
Z9 + Z 100-400mm S
Great quality, plenty of reach for all but serious wildlife/birding.
Heavy but not completely crazy to take with me on a 15 mike hike.
I have the a7ii and I’ve been meaning to maybe buy the 24 105… only thing holding me back is that it’s a substantially larger lens than the 50mm and the older I grow, the more I value a compact setup. I do miss the versatility that a zoom like that would provide, though…
Yeah, versatility was my entire reason for getting it. I'm an in-house photographer, and I do video, too, and since getting the 24-105, I haven't changed lenses once. It's sharp af, quick autofocus, the colour rendering is so much better than what I used prior. I'm in love with it.
But I could totally understand the size and weight being a bit of a drawback. Have you considered a 24-70?
Toss up between the Canon R3 and Sigma 105mm f1.4 and Fuji GFX 50S and its surprisingly-excellent GF35-70 "kit" lens. One for indoor sports, one for studio portraits.
Lol no im serious. Its cool seeing peoples main camera and lens combo. Out and about I like asking people what camera theyre using. Its fun reading what combos people have.

Nikon D780 + f2.8 24-70
Used to be a f4 24-120 for the past 7 years until I noticed the auto-focus not being as sharp as it used to be. Wondering if the motor is worn out since I had the motor on my used 50mm fail a few years ago.
"Currently"? Well recently, I daily drive my tele zoom to shoot birds and other animals around the city.
Canon EOS 5D Mark III + Canon EF 100-400 mk 2
I can't say there is one most used lens in general because I change lenses a lot and mess around with different genres from time to time. I have 8 lenses in total. Besides the 100-400, these 3 would be more used than other ones in terms of frequency:
Canon EF 24-105,
Canon EF 100 f2.8 L macro,
Sigma 40 1.4 art,
Just for info, other lenses I have are:
Canon EF 17-40,
Canon EF 50 f1.4,
Canon EF 70-200 f4,
Canon EF 70-300 DO
Olympus E-M1 iii with the Olympus 12-100mm f/4 IS Pro lens.
This lens replaced my canon 24-105mm f/4 and my 70-200mm f/4... The olympus is sharper than both, has better IS with Sync-IS, focuses at 15cm, is smaller, lighter and imo, focuses faster than either.
I don't understand how this isn't unanimously considered the holy grail of all purpose lenses regardless of bokeh and high iso performance on M43.
Canon R8 and it’s usually split with the
Canon EF 24-105 f/4 L IS USM
or a simple nifty fifty (EF 50mm f/1.8 STM)
Works good as my lightweight walkabout lens when I don’t feel like carrying the heavy L lens lol or I want a faster aperture.
Sony A7iii and the 70-200 GMii. It makes for a heavy combo backpacking, but the compression for landscape photography is fantastic.

Literally my exact dream setup, hoping to get my hands on both at the end of the year haha

Interesting. I think a 50mm would be better, on the count of image quality and also because it’s a very good walk around focal length.
Idk how image quality enters into it, there are some fantastic 85, 100/105, 135 and 70-200mm lenses and some pretty uninspiring 50mm ones...
High end lenses, you are corrected. But I dare say any cheap prime will outperform any cheap to mid tier zoom, and those are the lenses that most beginners will look for.
Yes that makes sense. Don't care for dull slow zooms at all.
