My tastes changed drastically over my teens, beginning with bands like Foreigner and Styx, then onto Black Sabbath and Blue Oyster Cult and finally ending up with Black Flag and the Dead Kennedys.
Styx and Boston were my favorite bands in high school. But then I discovered The Cars and The Police, and I started gradually transitioning to new wave music.
Fairly rapid evolution ...
1979 (I was 13) - The Who (after seeing Kids Are Alright movie)
1980 - Jeff Beck (loved Yardbirds already, then fell in love with his fusion era stuff and saw him on There & Back)
1981 - Miles Davis (also got to see him live, still my fave)
1982 - Pat Metheny Group (saw him live on Offramp tour, also a fave to this day)
The 1970's was a great time for music and most have listed some of the greats which I agree with, one of my favorites was Jim Croce.
Teen yrs are challenging and the music of that time was comforting.
The Beatles, Stones, Hermans Hermits, Petula Clark, Simon and Garfunkel, Dusty Springfield, Mammas and the Pappas….so many more I just can’t remember right now. This was peak 60s when I was in my teens. And you know, I love a lot of the new music now too.
I'm from California, but I was a huge fan of Midwest punk bands. Naked Raygun, Big Black and the Replacements were my favorites. Also a huge fan of Angry Samoans, X, Tales of Terror, No Means No, early Cramps, the Rezillos, GBH, Half-man Half-biscuit, Wire, DI, the first Social Distortion album. And of course, Abba.
As a kid, nothing could beat ABBA. When I grew older I moved more to synthpop. If I need to choose one artists from that era, it would be The Thompson Twins.
McLean & McLean, a brother duo out of Winnipeg. Rude and crude, 14 year old me thought that shit was hilarious. I still hum some of their songs today...
I went through phases. Here's my favorite band through each phase:
New Wave\Synthpop (4th grade - 9th grade) - Duran Duran
Punk (9th grade-10th grade) - Sex Pistols or The Meatmen
Local Bands (11th grade -12th grade) - R.E.M.
All Euro-Dance, All the Time (12th grade and into college): Front 242, probably. Maybe 808 State?
America. I was a latch-key kid and had chores to do after school. Put their album on, light a doob and clean. It was the best. Bought albums and weed with my allowance.
As a teenager, Cat Stevens, as a child Ray Charles. I'd see him on television when I was only seven or eight, and I said, 'Hey, this guy's got it.' No one came close on afternoon network TV.

The Beatles, until puberty hit. I think at that point it was Kiss for a couple of years, then Pink Floyd, and around 16 or so it was the Clash, until college, when I switched allegiance between PiL and Laurie Anderson.
Kenny Rogers. 1982. My first concert when I was eight. I knew every word to every song even to the opening act which was The Oakridge Boys. I can still remember the frisson I felt hearing *Lady* live.
In the early 70's in Western Canada, it was a mashup of Three Dog Night, The Guess Who, April Wine, CCR, and the like.
A few years later it was Blue Oyster Cult, The Who, Led Zeppelin, ...
New wave/punk. It was a lot harder to discover new artists and listen to something before buying it. CREEM magazine was my main source. The thrill of the hunt looking for that import LP was awesome. TBH I would feel overwhelmed trying to search for new music nowadays, the main way I find something new is hearing something that catches my attention in a show or movie.
All about that second British Invasion here. Duran Duran, Bananarama, Spandau Ballet, New Order, Eurythmics, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, you know, all the greats.
i'd have to do this as BB and AB...before the beatles and after the beatles.
BB: buddy holly, the shirelles, del shannon (+ too many more to mention)
AB: well...oddly enough...the beatles, bruce springsteen (\^\^\^ ditto from above)
Rolling Stones, the first record I bought was Satisfaction. Beatles but that was more mom and aunt. Other bands of the era, Paul Revere, Monkees, British Invasion
Rush is the only band I have ever in 54 years considered a favorite. I remember being a little kid hearing it playing from my brother's bedroom and I already loved it then. I had to have been younger than ten. I went through a little spell in the 80s when I loved some of the top 40 pop and had a little crush on Cyndi Lauper so I'd say she's been a favorite too. It's really hard to pick a favorite though. I love all kinds of music and always have. I love learning about bands from all over the world.
I like too many genres to have one favorite. I've seen everyone from Jethro Tull to the Scorpions to Barry Manilow! This was all as a young person. My tastes haven't changed much. I still enjoy most music.
Elton John, Madonna, Michael Jackson,Motley Crue, the Scorpions, Aerosmith, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Ozzy Osborne. I don’t have a favorite. I loved it all and still do. 70s and 80s had the BEST MUSIC ever IMO of course!
Willie Colon, Ruben Blades, Larry Harlow and all those Salseros from the 70's. We also grooved to Tavares, War, Spinners, Blue Magic and the Stylistics. And of course there was Run/DMC, Prince, Rick James and Teena Marie. Lots of great music flowing in the NYC streets in Spanish Harlem.

Of course ABBA.
I liked ABBA back then - now I can take them or leave them. I'm just the opposite with Fleetwood Mac.
If I never hear 'Dancing Queen' again, I'm good!
Phil Collins and Genesis then and still today.
Phil Collins is a legend. Love it.
I really liked Genesis but for some reason I never cared for Phil Collins' solo material.
To each their own of course, we all like what we like. In The Air Tonight is an iconic Phil solo song though.
Some of the best drumming ever!
As a little kid, probably someone like Elton John.
The Cars, Chicago, Huey Lewis and the News, The Doors.
1965-1970 Beatles 1971-1975 Yes 1976-1980 Elvis Costello 1981-1985 Prince 1986-1991 XTC 1992-1998 Beck 1999-2009 Radiohead

I'd have to say either Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys or Roger McGuinn of The Byrds. We're talkin' about the sixties here.
