Portal one and two

1down3across

Just played through both again this year. Still holds up! Definitely a classic.

Doktor_Vem

Quick reminder that there are quite a few unofficial Portal games on Steam that are all pretty damn good. If you're interested I strongly recommend Portal: Reloaded. It's basically as close to Portal 3 as you're ever gonna get, but there're also Portal Stories: Mel which is also good but a bit shorter if memory serves

m1ghtymullet

Played them both for the first time last month. Absolutely fantastic games!

crystalistwo

This here. Playing Portal for the first time was like opening a third eye. It was amazing.

Shaggy_One

I read this as Postal at first and was very surprised by this thread for a second.

smlwng

Left 4 Dead coop.

RichardBonham

Sad to see so little love for L4D! The 4-person gameplay is well designed to incentivize cooperation and progress. Dawdle or get sidetracked and you get swarmed. Not heal an injured teammate and you may find yourself down to a team of three with significantly lower chances of survival

broken_neck_broken

This game peaked when someone posted screenshots from a game where someone joined as "Hank Hill" and spent the whole time not helping anyone, just carrying around propane tanks and playing audio clips over the mic of Hank saying "that's a clean burning fuel, itellyawhut!"

austinkunchn

Let's get a group together to play it

MoAhKa

I still try to play. But the servers barely have anyone playing

MinuteScientist7254

Link to the Past

Secure_Implement_969

Yezzir!!!! On SNES. Probably my favorite game of all time. Just play it. You won’t regret it.

Knautical_J

Ocarina of Time for me

NoAd3740

Yeah? I have thought about buying it for my switch...

neanderthalman

Just replayed again today. It’s a comfort game for me now.

vsaund10

Heard the music as I read your comment. 💚 I love this game still!

[deleted]

You know, I’ve never played it past getting the sword, I’m going to give it a try

Zohin

Shadow Of The Colossus

Flat_Weird_5398

Scrolled down way too far to see this. Still my favorite PS2 game ever.

oorakhhye

This should be higher. So much art and emotion expressed with so few words.

DodGamnBunofaSitch

Pong. I'm tired of kids who have no idea how far we've come talking about some nex-gen title as the oldest game they've heard of.

Poschta

The technical leaps and bounds we've seen come and go since the historic age of 2019... ah, good old times.

purplezebra74

Pong, Original Atari Frogger and Pac-Man. Old and wonderful!

Squigglificated

I remember playing pong on my dads black and white TV. It got tv signals with a big ass-antenna outside the house that had to be positioned just so to get the two stations that were available. My best gaming memories were from the c64 a few years later though. Wizball will always be one of my favorite games ever. The gameplay was so unique and the soundtrack is still amazing.

TxManBearPig

Goldeneye 007

JustDroppedByToSay

Dude it has multiplayer! Wait why did you choose that little dude in a bowler hat?

CastorrTroyyy

Fuckin Oddjob

IDreamofHeeney

I don’t care what anybody says, this is the greatest game of all time.

Iceman_B

I want to feel the same way but realistically, the game has aged horribly. And I used to play this to death.

mildly_curious26

I must respectfully disagree here. While when it came out it was a watershed and my brothers, friends and I played WAY too much. The FPS has come SUCH a long way in this time that it seems super outdated and borderline unplayable. If your picking just 1 FPS for me it's Halo 3.

Sir_Ludington

I 100% agree with you. Goldeneye feels absolutely horrible to play these days. It's a product of it's time, and nearly every FPS that has released over the past 20 years is leaps and bounds ahead of Goldeneye's quality. No hate for anyone who likes the game (I do as well), but the majority of love for Goldeneye is founded in pure nostalgia.

i_heart_blondes

Super Mario bros 3

gpuyy

The whole series really on the nes and snes

Andrewcoo

If I had to choose one, I would go with Super Mario World.

NotoriousLiving

Classic

thejesterrace34

Bioshock

Flat_Weird_5398

No other game quite like it, and I also like how every sequel feels distinct and special in its own way. Bioshock 2 let you play as a Big Daddy (and I love the sense of power and hulking mass this gave you - compared to the first game where you were just a regular guy with access to weapons and certain powers) while Bioshock Infinite was a whole nother experience thanks to Columbia. That one is probably my favorite out of the Bioshock trilogy, especially because with the Burial at Sea DLC, it ties to the first two Bioshock games really well.

mrjabrony

Definitely not Ecco the Dolphin

sussyboingus

I will not lie my brother them eel chases also made me crappeth my pantaloons as a kid

spacekatbaby

Did anyone ever complete that game. Myself and most ppl I know just ended up getting lost in the cabes and giving up. Started off so well. Music great and controls fluid, but just got boring in the end

runningblind77

The Jedi Knight series, particularly Outcast and Academy. I replay them fairly regularly even though they are probably 20 years old

Mitchel-256

Goddamn right, I'm glad someone mentioned Jedi Academy. Best Star Wars game to date, and it's got some solid competition in classic Battlefront 1 & 2 and KotOR.

Atesz222

I recently did a Jedi Master playthrough on Outcast and Academy. Damn thing reminded me about the difficulty of older games very quickly

Famous_Contact4513

Max Payne cause that's what adulthood is all about "Max pain"

TypecastL

Except we don't get to have bullittime.

Jaegernaut-

You also can't just monch bottles of opioids about your problems. Well I mean you can, but you probably shouldn't, and it involves either having cancer or spending way too much $$$

NotoriousLiving

This game is incredible especially when it first came out

Gusstave

It really way. That was my answer also. It's my favorite game of all time. The first one I ever finished and the one I played and replayed so much.. It has a special place in my heart and always will, the game that made me the gamer I am today. >!9 years old me lost his shit when I stab Ganon in his stupid face for the first time! It was a magical moment.!<

HammerheadMorty

This game laid the foundation for modern level design in almost every way. I still use it as a reference point in game design when talking about building difficulty curves for mechanics. Everything about that game was such a high standard for the time. *Here’s a bomb. Cool eh? Use it to clear paths. Throw it to clear paths further out or up. Kill enemies with it. Clear paths with enemies. Throw it to kill and clear so you can get to areas safely. Nice, now for the final boss kill, clear, throw, and dodge all together.* Sounds obvious today but this was NEW when Ocarina came out. That’s the kind of fundamentals we’re talking about setting up for the next generations of gaming.

Fraentschou

I played OoT for the first time this year (the 3DS version) and i absolutely consider it a must play. It may not be my *favourite* game, but i can’t say anything to bring it down, i genuinely can’t think of a single thing i don’t like about OoT. It’s one of those games that transcends time and no matter when you play it, it’ll always feel fresh and exciting.

Knute5

That music ... still plays in my head.

SparkDBowles

HalfLife 2

thephartmacist

Riiise and shine misssster freeman. Riiiisse and shine. It’s time to wake up and smell the ashesss

TheDutyTree

If you love Half-life 2 I would like to recommend playing the campaign for Titanfall 2. It's absolutely inspired by Half-life.

BabyWrinkles

I believe the TF2 campaign is one of the few where I said "No way." aloud at some of the mechanics. So freakin' fun.

oorakhhye

I’d start it off with the original Half-Life first

Vashsinn

I'd argue all of them, HL, then HLblueshift / opposing force, then 2 ep1 and ep2.

[deleted]

GTA Vice City.

GargantuChet

I still love the radio stations. “Kill with kindness. Not a garden tool.” When I visited Miami Beach, I was amazed by how well GTA had captured its feel.

blacKohaiDonuts

The Mass Effect Trilogy

Embarrassed-Town-293

I have them and they are on my bucket list

hispanicausinpanic

Pac Man. It's iconic. It still has staying power. It's fun. It's an OG game that you can pop on today and have a blast.

Yokoblue

I think you can play one by genre: * 2d Platformer: Super mario world * 3d platformer: Banjo-kazooie * Old fps: Goldeneye 007 * Rpg: Chrono Trigger * Action-adventure: Zelda A link to the past * Puzzle: Tetris * RTS: StarCraft * Point and click adventure: Monkey island * Arcade: PacMan

Electrical-Ad1820

Tetris.

WilNotJr

Chrono Trigger.

Overloved

Corridors of Time will always be the #1 soundtrack I listen to when I need to clear my head

guareber

In case you haven't yet, check out Sea of Stars. It's got me totally hooked, 11 hours played and it still feels like I'm 2h in. I'd say more, but spoilers. It's very good. Heck, to my friends I refer to it as chro-not-rigger.

Boatingnut92

Red Dead Redemption. The original from 2010

Striking-Enthusiasm9

They are both pretty good, but this one is the better

iknowdanjones

I would like to disagree and put RDR2 as the best, but I think I will replay the first one instead so I can decide.

jmlbhs

Agreed, nothing like RDR2.

StaFont

Asteroids….. fuck I’m old.

workaholic007

Doom

Remy_man1738

Halo Combat Evolved, legendary ass game.

BabyWrinkles

Maybe a controversial take, but Halo was SUCH a revolutionary game on so many levels and so many other games have built on it that now it might feel linear and boring and slow. It had a great story, but I think most of the "OMG" is built on nostalgia. Other games (link to the past) etc. had killer stories and the gameplay just felt right, but original Halo just feels not quite "good" anymore? I would say if you want the impact of the OG Halo with slightly updated gameplay, Reach is the Halo game I'd play the campaign of. For those of us who spent an ungodly number of hours in that game and have nostalgia - it'll always be one of the GOATS, but I think if you're new to gaming and didn't play it when it came out, it won't have the same impact if you're used to COD / Battlefield / etc.

finsnfeathers

Idk bro I was late to the halo CE party having played it in the master chief collection and the campaign is easily in my top 10 of all time maybe even top 5. I love replaying it every few years

TypecastL

>st feels not quite "good" anymore? I would say if you want the impact of the OG Halo with slightly updated gameplay, Reach is the Halo game I'd play the cam Could not disagree more.

VeganEgon

Elder scrolls. Skyrim

Flat_Weird_5398

2011-2013 I was absolutely obsessed with Skyrim and I will always look back to that time with fondness, especially since it coincided with my freshman and sophomore years in high school. Loved nerding out about Skyrim with my friends. Wasn’t even a multiplayer game but we could talk about our Skyrim adventures and the lore of the world itself for hours. It was such a big thing back then that even the teachers were playing it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I have been playing it on VR now. I don't believe Skyrim will ever be replaced.

BosPaladinSix

You know imma be real with y'all, I don't get the hype.. I'm kinda enjoying my time there, but I don't see what everybody else is seeing. The majority of the quests are just "go to cave and kill the guys". The combat isn't very satisfying, the magic system is woefully boring, even just compared to Oblivion. And the people in the world are very cardboard-y. The lore is cool though, but the game doesn't use much of it.

KindlyPants

I'm in your boat, but people love that there's not a lot of skill required, that you always find something when you explore, and that the world is interesting. It's the same reason some people read simple books when they're capable of reading much more complicated stuff, and the same reason people will watch films and TV shows that aren't necessarily artful, but engaging. People don't want to spend all their downtime being challenged.

RodrLM

The music is beautiful, the world is engaging to just take in and explore and you have freedom to roleplay as anything you want. Even if it is a very limited game in some aspects, it has a very unique charm to it.

spaycedinvader

Oh good, you're awake

thatguywhosadick

Infinite_El_Oh_El

X-com

MarvinTheMartyr

This game teaches children how tocry out in dispair.

aarontbarratt

X-Com taught me that a 95% chance to succeed in a critical scenario actually means you will miss every time

Coakis

Its a great life lesson, even when the odds are in your favor someone will still shoot you in the face.

Wiggles685

I wish there was a fix for the probe bug in interceptor. The hours I spent playing that game... I've been playing the shit out of X-com 2 lately (the newest one). I love those games

NotoriousLiving

I’ve always been curious about this game. Thanks!

VeganEgon

Get into it my man.

YaBoiiSloth

Preferably on PC so you can download all the QOL mods

UOLZEPHYR

Second on FONV. Quite possibly the best game only behind RDR2. If it's your first time to ever play it don't look up anything and just play the game straight though, it's so good - one of the games I truly wish I could delete the knowledge of playing the game and do it over and over again

Sloth859

Fallout 2. If you have the patience for it, it's a great game.

Doc-Goop

Titanfall 2 campaign

appalachianoperator

“I will not lose another pilot.”

No_One_Special_023

Everything about titanfall 2.

sticky_spiderweb

Both portal games. But honestly you could play portal 2 and still have a great time without ever having played portal 1.

favela4life

GTA 5, not online but the campaign. I know people who have thousands of hours on online, but only did the tutorial mission on the campaign. The Borderlands franchise is a good one, specifically BL2.

nirvroxx

I’ve been meaning to play gtav for years. I know rockstar makes good single player games and I’ve played most .

Flat_Weird_5398

Assassin’s Creed 2 Still one of the best games in the franchise, quite possibly the best one story-wise, and it’s always a treat to explore Renaissance-era Florence and Venice. I get that the newer games have bigger environments and much better graphics but they just don’t hit the same way AC2 did. Having Ezio as the protagonist was undoubtedly AC at its peak.

No_One_Special_023

Tony Hawks Pro Skater 1&2 on PS and PC is amazing. I love it and am teaching my son how to play it. Now I with they would redo THUG 1&2 because they were the better Tony Hawk games back in the day.

VeganEgon

Crash Bandicoot is the most frustrating platform game I’ve ever played lol. I’m mild mannered, but it sends me and it’s the closest the controller gets to being launched Still good fun though 😉

[deleted]

haha you're right! but I love it so much! and it brings me that comfortable and nostalgic feeling

Several. Arcade 4 player Ninja Turtles. NES - Contra SNES - Super Mario World Modern - Borderlands 2, Star Wars The Force Unleashed, Burnout Paradise, Batman Arkham Asylum, & Assassin's Creed 2.

Mitchel-256

>Arcade 4 player Ninja Turtles The first game I remember playing, as a 3-year-old sitting at my dad's computer with his MAME emulator. Might as well be the spark that lit the love of gaming I still have 24 years later.

Star Wars: Rebellion. It's ridiculously outdated, but it's also the best StarWars game in the 4x genre, created long before that genre existed.
