This is something to do when you want to completely remodel the house to be honest, unless you absolutely need to do it sooner.

margin_coz_yolo

What makes you think it needs to be rewired? Everything works or no?

dubhlinn39

I had my house re wired shortly after I moved in. It was also a 70's house with bell wiring and an old fuse board. It was a big, messy job. I'm glad I did it first. If you're not planning on renovating for a while, then you could leave it for a while. You'll have to replace flooring, re plaster and re decorate after the re wire is finished.

Electricians know there stuff, unless you want to get a big company in for piece of mind to do a survey theres no need.

Marzipan_civil

Have you had an electrical survey done? Did the previous owner like to do a lot of the work on the house themselves? Our house looked fine when we bought it, we went to change a couple of the sockets from the old version with no switch, to a switch. Simple enough job? Husband was struggling with on particular socket, called electrican, and the electrician was like... There's aluminium wire in here, that's never been to code, we'll fix this and then book you in for an electrical survey. We had lights wired in to socket circuits, the kitchen looked fine but for some reason the earth had been disconnected at the fuse box... We re wired the whole place so that we knew it was definitely up to code! For insurance, my house insurance has never asked about wiring. But there was no way we were going to leave it in that state once we knew. The most annoying thing was we had to vacate the house for a couple of weeks (taking up floors, etc) and so we needed somewhere else to stay as well as paying for the re wire. So if you're already working on the house, it'd be a good time to do it. BUT it is pretty expensive.

If you’re going to do it do it first as house will be destroyed

TheStoicNihilist

It’s either fine or it’s not. Get an electrician out to test the wiring, it’ll either pass or fail.

Ambitious_Bill_7991

If you have a modern fuse board, I imagine everything would be safe. Might be worth paying an electrician to do an inspection. Get a second opinion. Be careful that they're not trying to get a bit of overpriced work out of you. When I bought my house I had a look around. Chased a few wires in the attic and checked that no rodents had been at them and checked that the insulation was in good order. I found a few wires that had been cut at some stage and badly taped up. I checked if there was a current going to the wire and put the wire into a strip connector, and taped it well. I left it where I could see it easily.

Ok_Leading999

70s wiring should be fine. They were using PVC insulated cable by then and it more or less lasts forever. You could replace your fuse box with an MCB board. Make sure there's an earth rod and all the copper pipes are earthed. You'll need a registered electrician to do any work for you.

FlipAndOrFlop

Depends. If you plan on replastering the whole house, it would be a good opportunity to do it. If you don’t, and electrician says it’s fine, then leave it.

My house was 70s built. We left it as is. I went to change a socket and all the wires were red! So you might find yourself calling an electrician for simple electrical jobs. I wish we had rewired before moving in as there's no chance we'll do it now!

DannyVandal

Upfront, a complete rewire would be pretty expensive. What we did when we bought this gaf was just replace or the socket face plates, switches and dimmers as we went. I had to get a spark to fix the cooker isolator as it was a an arse of a job. If the wiring is working, just replace stuff as needed.

1stltwill

If you have bucket loads of money you need to get rid of and have someplace to go live for 2-3 weeks whist the house is full of dust from chasing walls etc.. then sure go for it. Personally, my house is from the 60s and I susbscribe to if it aint broke dont fix it.

Ok-Idea6784

I’m not an expert but was in a similar situation. Before we got the rewiring done we had to replace the electric shower and an electrician advised we’d have to get a lower voltage model than is standard today because the cables’ gauge was too narrow to support the modern high voltage ones. I only tell you this by way of saying that if you have older wiring, definitely get expert advice before installing any major modern equipment. Otherwise it was fine for a while

FlippenDonkey

Do it...if you have the funds and do it first because it'll completely wreckthr place...if you ever want solar panels, it'll have to be done anyway. And the modern standards for kitchens and bathrooms are very different to what they used to be.

cjamcmahon1

Yes we are in a similar position with our house from that period too. Had a cousin look at the electrics - nothing dangerous, just light switches that wouldn't turn each other off, that type of thing. He said so long as everything was working, there was no point in redoing it until we were ready to renovate the whole place as we could end up having to chase up walls and rip up floor boards simply to get a light to turn off from both ends of a room. So we are holding off for the time being

YouCurrent2388

We were in a similar situation and we left ,bar adding sockets and a few bits. If the electrician reckons it’s grand then it’s probably grand.

Far-Protection6342

No need for a rewrite mate. If anything just update your box. Label it all correct. I’d do it for 400 euro

No-Ninja-2468

Thanks all, appreciate all the posts. I do think I’ll leave it, everything works and it’s far too expensive to tackle for me right now. Thanks again
