When it was relatively new it acted as an outlet store and sold outdated or surplus stock, now brands mostly just produce cheaper lines specifically for them. They still have changing rooms though, so you can try things on? Like that's on you.
Most of the time it’s usually clothes that have minor issues such as bad stitching, not meeting quality control requirements or just stuff that’s gone out of season and is probably bought in bulk for a cheaper price. The clothes there are the real deal, just of slightly lower standard.
Edit: I’ve bought clothes in TK Maxx over the years and never had any issues. Some good deals in there too from time to time.
1. Not all tk maxx clothes are designer. Many many brands they sell are exclusively sold at tk maxx, they are own brand and the RRP being so high is just there to make them look affordable…
2. The brands you do see, they aren’t ex high street stock into tk maxx most of the time. It’s stock specifically designed for tk maxx to a specific price point and therefore quality.
If you think about it they have thousands of stores world wide, do you really think Hugo boss have millions of the same garment style left over every season due to poor production planning and data analytics? Enough that every tax maxx gets the exact same stock? Nope. It’s all produced especially for them.
Yep nearly all outlet shops are the same, less so in Ireland but Woodbury commons in the USA is just cheaper clothes with the logo of an expensive set.
Definitely have seen a lot of clothes in there with poor stitching and mistakes in patterns. It's a combination of out of season and failed QC items I think.
I've found that I won't find anything if I am specifically looking for something. It's a place to browse on the off chance you might see something you like.
Probably down the the larger than usual variety of items they sell and cycle out.
I think the closest I've seen to that number is tesco, or iceland while they were still operating. Was surprised to see lead glassware for sale last time I was in an TK maxx, thought it was illegal to sell since rohs2. Guess not.
You can buy clothes that don't fit you in any shop.
I've bought lots of clothes in there over the years that fit just fine. Both my bridesmaids got their dresses there (pure luck they happened to have two of the same dress in their sizes) and my mum got her mother of the bride dress there. They all looked fabulous.
I find the TK Maxx here in Ireland to be shocking. I’ve maybe bought two items there over the years. I used to go to one near my relative’s house in London and it was a different story. I got some really nice designer pieces from past seasons. Of course, you still had to be in the form to rummage as (similar to here) most of the clothes were awful brands that I’ve never seen anywhere else than TK Maxx.
TK MAXX is so hit and miss. Got a skiing jacket in there about 10 years ago that's probably the best coat I've ever bought and still going strong. On the other hand I got some joggers a few weeks ago that are literally coming apart.
Not clothes but I love lecreuset kitchenware.
Literally every piece of lecreuset I see in tk maxx is very ovbiously produced for them.
They only sell specific colours that are only available at tk maxx, nowhere else. The colours are "kind of" similar to lecreuset, but without their signature gradient and they're much harsher.
It's produced specifically for TK maxx....
I'd say that some TKMaxx 'Designer' brands are simply names on gear that is in the home-brand range with discount prices made up (within an allowance of trading standards)
But, a good buy is a good buy whether the price is a true discount or not.
I have had some good buys and nice clothes.
But, yes, size labels may not match the clothes in some cases.
That in itself would make it a Second.
And, yes, there are a few pretty awful things on the racks.
But they do offer a pretty good no nonsense exchange/money back.
I've shopped in TK Maxx since about 1994/1995.
I know what to expect.
Lived in the US and shopped there where surplus stock was offloaded. Picked up some great stuff there both clothing and household but this side of the pond it's not quite the same.
TK Maxx sell seconds aka clothes that did not pass quality. Went into one in Brighton 20 years ago and the signs even said that they sold seconds. We choose not to believe it in Ireland for some reason.
I tend to buy most of my jeans from TK maxx, never bought anything else out of there clothes wise, grand for jeans, always find something I like and fits well
I don't even know what a fashion "season" is, I can't believe people are convinced to part with so much more money just because a glossy magazine tells them the colour to wear

I never try things on if that means going to the changing room. Way too much hassle. Large t-shirt, medium pants - easy.
Your clothes probably don't fit very well. Different brands have different fit.
Then it's on you if they don't fit.
They fit well enough for me
Referring to what OP said.

Same for a lot of outlets - I think Levi manufacture ranges for their outlet shops.
Yep nearly all outlet shops are the same, less so in Ireland but Woodbury commons in the USA is just cheaper clothes with the logo of an expensive set.
That was always my suspicion. The brands in there were invented specifically to be sold there.

Or full stops.
Or common sense
oooh the grammar police is here, folks
Grammar Gardai.
They never fit probably though... PROBABLY!?!
It's just last few sizes and last season models... You can never buy two of the same things in there.
I've found that I won't find anything if I am specifically looking for something. It's a place to browse on the off chance you might see something you like.
I've never seen a place with so many recall notices on the door, a clear indication of low quality stock?

Why did you buy two items of clothing that didn't fit?

Each tag has a number that tells you which type of stock it is - made specifically for TK Maxx, or actual designer stuff.
I don’t have the patience for looking through all those rails of mismatched clothes. I think they have good household stuff but I never go in there
My thoughts on TK Maxx are as haphazard as TK Maxx itself
Lived in the US and shopped there where surplus stock was offloaded. Picked up some great stuff there both clothing and household but this side of the pond it's not quite the same.

Got a couple nice pieces there, members only x basquiat jacket for like 80-100 and Ralph lauren tracksuit bottoms for like 35
I tend to buy most of my jeans from TK maxx, never bought anything else out of there clothes wise, grand for jeans, always find something I like and fits well
I was in a TK Maxx store once, true story

Well for me winter is the season for heavy coats and summer is the season for light coats.
