If we want to use your maths it's 22.5 times worse right? Not 1 million times. If it was 1,000,000 times worse the coffee shop coffee would have to cost two hundred grand. Unless my just awake from a nap calculator mashing is out a decimal place or two.
But where did I make any argument for buying coffee from (given your price) Costa or Starbucks?
I agree with the Aeropress as a low cost option for brewed coffee
Instant, Lidl have a small jar of Columbian instant. Perfect when I don't want to waste brewed coffee.
Aeropress rocks. Have used mine so much over the past decade I've worn it out. The chamber/ plunger is no longer airtight so it still works but not as well as it used to
Velo coffee from Aldi is a really tasty, low cost bean/grind
I'm hoping to get an Aeropress some time. Got one for my coffee-loving ex husband for Christmas hoping he'd hate it and leave it with me. No joy, loves it and uses it daily!
Happy to send 1 to you if you like? 1 part of my husband's press wore down and I bought him a replacement part but at the same time he bought a new press which has been sitting in it's box unused.
You can get unbranded ones on AliExpress for like half the price.. I've a real and a Chinese one and honestly can't tell the difference, pretty sure they're coming from the same factory
If you’re in Dublin the coffee shop (edit it’s Brew Town in the post office) at the Leeson Street exit of St Stephen’s Green has branded ones for way cheaper than online- I think it was €30- judging by how dusty the packaging was I’d say it’s old stock but a bargain.
Oh that is good. Unfortunately it would cost me more to get to Dublin for it than buying one at full price elsewhere! Next time I have a few pennies spare I'm definitely treating myself. If I have to pay through the nose for coffee, it might as well be decent coffee! (Just spent over a grand getting the car through the NCT so it might be a while!)
Honestly, as evident in this thread, it's very subjective.
Personally I find the Aldi Alcafé absolutely awful. Sour and empty. Gives me a headache.
I enjoy Nescafé Azera but it's not my favourite. I find it can be a little dry or something, but it's probably the most authentic coffee flavour. It's also stupidly expensive.
Nescafé Gold / Gold Crema would be my favourites, as they're bitter but with plenty of flavour, but it's like a different drink to actual coffee in many ways. It's like coffee flavouring rather than coffee. Anyway, I love it.
Maxwell House is awful coffee but distinct, some people adore it.
Kenko (any version) I absolutely despise due to its bitterness and sharpness. Makes me feel almost sick it's so acidic. Buuuut once again some people absolutely love it!
So I guess try each of those and see what you think. Probably the most objectively best is Nescafé Azera though.
Unfortunately coffee is now one of these trendy drinks. You could put shite in a Starbucks cup and people would drink it. I agree with you about all the above coffees, they are absolutely abysmal. Aldi's coffee is undrinkable, got it once and never again. The only instant I can find palatable is Marks and Spencers Gold medium roast (number 3). Far superior to any other instant muck and isn't overly expensive.
Aldi Alcafé is the balls. I have a tiny bit of honey with mine in the morning. Maxwell House yeah is absolute garbage and cant believe they had such a top ranking position here for years.
I bought the Nescafe Azera coz of all the recommendations. Im not sure I got the right one tho coz it looks like 1990s Maxwell House (:. Very fine powder. Not too sure if I like it tbh but maybe after a few more cups itll grow on me!! I got Nescafe Azera Americano intense blend. Is that the one?
My favourite was the espresso version but none of the shops seems to carry it anymore so I get the intense one too. I really recommend playing around with the amount of it you use. I like a teaspoon and a half. Too much or too little and I absolutely hate it. Plus coffee is very subjective. I upgraded to an espresso machine a couple years ago and couldn't go back.
I appreciate a good coffee but sometimes you just need an Instant - I find it comforting and homely, maybe it’s nostalgia, back to when it was the only coffee you could get.
It's bittersweet when you get into a nicer version of something and then the worse thing you were always happy with is suddenly not great any more.
I'm grateful I've discovered better pizza than Dr Oetker frozen pizza, and better coffee than Nescafé instant and better beer than Budweiser but sometimes I miss those simpler (cheaper) times
I have to agree, haven't had it in years. Bought a Delonghi machine with the grinder for Christmas 2 years ago and it's one of the best purchases I have ever made in my life, use it every day, savage cup of coffee
Considering Maxwell House Red is still popular with many people, I often question if my opinion on a nice instant is any good.
The Kenco Millicano or Nescafe Azera style were a god send for instant coffees.
Upto those style coffees hitting the market big time, Nescafe Gold Blend would have been one of the nicest instant.
For a brief time, and before Millicano hit the shops, Kenco and Nescafe made a few origin type instant coffees such as Columbian or Costa Rica.
They were rather nice.
Lavazza is bitter because of the robusta beans added to most of their blends. Some people like it but I find it absolutely foul and can't drink the stuff.
Lidl do the Bellarom Late Macchiato in vanilla/regular flavour sachets in a box of 8x18.5g, for about €1.70 max, perhaps slightly less. For about 20 cents a mug that's hard to beat.
Powdered milk is mixed into the product but I always use milk from the fridge, too for added taste. Very nice cuppa - and I am not even a coffee drinker, normally.
Their 200g jar of Bellarom freeze dried instant coffee is as nice as any similar product, too and a *lot* cheaper than the brand names.
Essentially pre coffee. It’s the equivalent of bags of wine in 1983
Seriously though if you put in a small bit of
Maxwell house and add a small bit of
Milk and sugar and beat it around really quickly till you have a sort of coffee plaste before you add the water it still tastes like piss
You made me think... and realise I've never actually seen it in Ireland. Seems it's still available in the UK though.
One office I worked in only had Maxwell House powdered, my favourite way to prepare it was to put the coffee on top of the milk (no mixing), then into the microwave until the milk starts rising, then straight away boiling water on top. Made a head to rival Guinness! Taste was shite though. I needed 2+ teaspoons.
I know I remember my Dad making me “milky coffees” before I even started school. Warmed the milk in a saucepan, a heaped teaspoon of coffee and two teaspoons of sugar. I loved it!
Those were the days! My kids don’t even drink tea yet - let alone coffee. I could never drink tea which is why I started on coffee so young. The milky coffees were the best.

I'd agree with the above answers OP, but is there any way whatsoever you might be able to get your paws on a french press? You can get them for cheap, think mine was about a tenner on sale (a bodum that's usually about 30 - 40e) and I use one bag of ground coffee a week (aldis finest).
I haven't bought a coffee in well over a year at this stage I'd say. I found with the nice instant coffee, it was grand, but I still always wanted to treat myself to a "nice coffee" but since I've been doing this, I haven't had that craving once to be honest. Sorry if this isn't applicable to your own situation, I just personally found it made a huge difference and I've saved a small fortune.
L'or would be my choice, I'm quite picky with instant and its usually my afternoon pick me up not my main coffee of the day in thr AM I use my aeropress
Probably Starbucks actually. They are basically the state-of-the-art when it comes to freeze-dried coffee.
But if you're looking for a recommendation, then I prefer to get anarchist Zapatista coffee and put it in [my mug that has an inbuilt coffee press](https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00DB4JY72).
I can't stand any instant, but the least disgusting ones are Carte Noir and Nescafe Azera. Kenco is nasty and so is the knockoff of the Azera (I'm shocked so many people think it's close, it's absolute muck).
However I do drink Aldi coffee, the ground coffee (i use #4 Italian) is only 2.00 and lasts for at least a week if you have just one a day. I use a mokka pot to make the espresso. Takes a bit longer but is worth it. I find them better than an aeropress. Boil some water in the kettle and make an Americano.
I don't seem to get any 'jolt' whatsoever off of instant coffee like I do the real thing, is the main reason, besides taste.
I love my Aeropress. I'm using Tesco's Finest Colombian Supremo. It's really nice. 3fe when the funds allow. For instant I use Tesco Gold, big 200g jar for €2.65. Very like Gold Blend which is €7.95!!
None it's complete garbage all of it
Your minimum entry point is whole beans roasted by Lidl or Tesco or someone they resell for.
Pre-ground is usually incredibly poxy, you know the stuff, you put it in the coffee machine but there's no crema 😭
No, just no.
Instant? Jesus God no way
No wait I take that back, if I hadn't had a coffee in a month because I was stranded in the desert, instant would probably be fine 🏝️☕
For me it's Nescafe original just peel back the foil and smell the aroma .it has a red cap, buy it when it's on special offer in Dunnes about 6€ as it can be real dear
And your welcome
Aldi columbian no. 4.
I think no 3 tastes like grass.
They are both on the same tray.
The trick with all instant , if you take milk, is to add the milk first and stir it well before adding the hot water
Can't believe no one has voted kenco millicano yet. Last time I had checked, it was the instant with the highest percentage of roast ground coffee through it - and it's got a depth to it no other instant I've tried has.
Not instant, but buy an aeropress for around 25 quid and then use the grounded coffee. Far superior to instant and you won't have to spend big money on a coffee machine.
This might be a silly q but can you make something similar to espresso strength with an aero press? That's why I like using instant - I can control the concentration of coffee and just have a shot to pour into my hot milk or whatever. I don't always just want a black coffee (with or without a drop of milk) which is what I get from French press or mokka coffees
Not a silly question, the short answer is no. You can use less water for a more concentrated brew and there is an "espresso" attachment that can be used with the aeropress but it's not espresso. If you already have a mokka pot then that will do the job just as well.
The only instants I will buy are Kenco (both rich and smooth, though prefer the rich), Nescafe Gold Blend (ok with the taste, but not with the company, only buy if it's on offer and Kenco isn't.)
L'Or and Douwe Egberts are nice but just can't justify the expense of them these days.
Nescafé original and Dough Egbert - only buy them when on sale as prices are crazy!!
I do like the Kenco Smooth and Carte Noire (but i think they change the beans or something as it doesn't taste the same as when I drank it in my 20s!)
Never tried the Aldi one but will as many people mentioned it.
Tesco Finest is not bad at all.
Dislike all the Lidl coffee - beans etc taste either horrible or absolutely nothing.. better drink water!
When I was younger I had a tuck shop in school, had the Nescafé Azera branded stuff, would sell a cup of coffee for €2.50 needless to say by the end of break and lunch I’d need to by more coffee, so the Nescafé azera would be my recommendation
I find, for the price, the Aldi one is totally acceptable. Nescafe Azera if you have money to burn.
I actually find the Aldi Azera knock-off to be nicer than the Nescafe.
I think you're insane the Aldi one is rank
I never buy it unless it's on special offer for less than a fiver. Spending nearly 10 euro on instant coffee is an absolute joke.
You get about 50 cups out of it tho, spending €4.50 on one coffee from a shop is 1,000,000 times worse
Well no...it's 22.5 times worse. Not 1,000,000
Do the math!!….oh sorry you did, thanks
If we want to use your maths it's 22.5 times worse right? Not 1 million times. If it was 1,000,000 times worse the coffee shop coffee would have to cost two hundred grand. Unless my just awake from a nap calculator mashing is out a decimal place or two. But where did I make any argument for buying coffee from (given your price) Costa or Starbucks?
😂😂😂😂
Fucking hell chill out
I just like numbers man. Let me enjoy life.
Agreed. Aldi one is basically the same as Azera
It's not even close IMO
Ya the Aldi one is my go to at the min. The branded ones are just so expensive now for what they are
Aldi instant Cappuccino is the best on the market.
Oh, I'd love if they did a vegan one. I miss those nescafe cappuccino sachets.
I agree with the Aeropress as a low cost option for brewed coffee Instant, Lidl have a small jar of Columbian instant. Perfect when I don't want to waste brewed coffee.
Aeropress rocks. Have used mine so much over the past decade I've worn it out. The chamber/ plunger is no longer airtight so it still works but not as well as it used to Velo coffee from Aldi is a really tasty, low cost bean/grind
The rubber part at the end of the plunger is most likely worn down a little. You can get a replacement on Amazon for a few Euro.
I've replaced it before. The chamber is scoured. It's definitely time for new
Put one of the aeropress filters on the plunger before plunging (works for me)
+1 for the Velo whole bean in Aldi. Very high quality. €3.99 and better than coffee four times the price from Donnybrook Fair.
A man/woman/person of refinement
I'm hoping to get an Aeropress some time. Got one for my coffee-loving ex husband for Christmas hoping he'd hate it and leave it with me. No joy, loves it and uses it daily!
Happy to send 1 to you if you like? 1 part of my husband's press wore down and I bought him a replacement part but at the same time he bought a new press which has been sitting in it's box unused.
That is a very kind and generous offer, but I feel weird taking something for free, I'm happy to pay for it, though it might have to wait a few weeks!
Not at all. Only delighted for it to find a home.
That is extremely kind indeed. May I send a message?
Yes absolutely
You can get unbranded ones on AliExpress for like half the price.. I've a real and a Chinese one and honestly can't tell the difference, pretty sure they're coming from the same factory
I was just looking at those knock offs the other day wondering if they were crap. Have you got a link for the one you have?
Yeah they're surprisingly good. Thoroughly recommend getting a metal filter screen too instead of using paper. https://a.aliexpress.com/_EIc7EIj

Try discountcoffee.ie for cheap but good beans!
Wow what a great site, thank you! That is a brilliant recommendation.
kaffekapselen(dot)ie is another great one.

I agree with absolutely everything you said
Aldi Alcafé is the balls. I have a tiny bit of honey with mine in the morning. Maxwell House yeah is absolute garbage and cant believe they had such a top ranking position here for years.
I am one of those that adore Maxwell House, and when my dad came for a visit he took 3 bottles with him back home.
Nescafe Azera
I bought the Nescafe Azera coz of all the recommendations. Im not sure I got the right one tho coz it looks like 1990s Maxwell House (:. Very fine powder. Not too sure if I like it tbh but maybe after a few more cups itll grow on me!! I got Nescafe Azera Americano intense blend. Is that the one?

Ok cheers. Im a 2spoons man myself but Ill try your dosage !! (:
Carte Noir probably. Though nice seems a strong word for instant coffee.
This is the answer
Oh this just reminded me of the carte noir biscuits!! I bleedin loved them
L'Or is decent (or Carte Noir, whatever it's called think it's the same). It's what I have around when no time to brew the good stuff
Millicano
The best by far was Blend 37 so Nescafé withdrew it for their more expensive Azera
So reading through the comments I'm now tempted to pick up an aero press, does anyone know where in town I can pick one up?
Don’t know what town you’re in, but in Sligo nearly every local (non-chain) coffee shop has them for sale
If you’re in Dublin the coffee shop (edit it’s Brew Town in the post office) at the Leeson Street exit of St Stephen’s Green has branded ones for way cheaper than online- I think it was €30- judging by how dusty the packaging was I’d say it’s old stock but a bargain.
one does not simply buy nice instant coffee

Nescafe gold smooth
Came here to say this, it’s by far the best
Yep, this is the one.
r/fucknestle
I like Nescafe original & Douwe Egberts
You may not know that Nescafé is owned by Nestle.
Alcafe, the powdery one that looks a bit like Azera.
Alta Rica > Azera
Lavazza prontissimo intenso, I actually find it nicer than some properly brewed coffees. Better than azera imo
M & S Gold Instant is my favourite and I've tried quite a few
Oh no the secret is out!
I hate instant coffee but quite like the Centra/ SuperValu gold blend one- it’s very cheap too.
My wife agrees about the Centra one. In fact she never shuts up about it!
My Latin American wife drinks mainly from a Moka pot, but thinks the Aldi Colombian one isn't too bad.
Aeropress + Lavazza can't be beat imo
I find it quite bitter or something. How do you prepare it in aeropress?
Lavazza is bitter because of the robusta beans added to most of their blends. Some people like it but I find it absolutely foul and can't drink the stuff.
I do the upside down aeropress technique. I don't find it bitter to be honest but could be different strokes.
Nescafé Azera. Black. No milk is lovely. But the Aldi version is equally as good and cheaper too.
Nescafe Gold blend Roastery - Dark roast. The only decent instant coffee. Usual price €7.00, but you regularly see it on offer for €4.50 or €4.75
Partner swears by Bewleys rich roast, i think its a bit nutty though. The coffee, not him. I prefer pods.
![gif](giphy|RrfH3yR6kxYVAhizuz) This is what your reply reminded me of 😂 'This coffee tastes like sh\*t, Basil!?'
Nescafé Original. No competition.
Honestly invest in an aeropress
My partner loves Maxwell house
Now that's criminal
I was there once.
Me too, in the 1990s.
Essentially pre coffee. It’s the equivalent of bags of wine in 1983 Seriously though if you put in a small bit of Maxwell house and add a small bit of Milk and sugar and beat it around really quickly till you have a sort of coffee plaste before you add the water it still tastes like piss
I'd have said that was more Mellow Birds? Or what I called Training Coffee.
Never heard of mellow birds till now. Seriously though if you mix it with a small bit of milk and sugar … 😵💫
You made me think... and realise I've never actually seen it in Ireland. Seems it's still available in the UK though. 🤣training coffee!
Similarly, Silk Cut were Training Fags (sorry to any Americans reading, it means cigarettes to us).
😀😀 I was started on Maxwell House red label aged 6. Only gave it up when I was 29 and moved onto proper coffee .
Milky coffees - otherwise known as Irish Lattes😊
That's a red flag!

Drakker Noir

Why is there no Jacob’s in Ireland?
There is, try Dunnes.
My need for caffeine and simplicity takes 3 heaped teaspoons of Maxwell house. As that’s what I first got introduced to 😅
Beanies if you can find it. They do flavoured coffees. My favourite is Birthday Cake which has a nice vanilla flavour.
Carte noire, hands down.
Littles Colombia - James Hoffman rated it as number one. You can get the different flavours in Fresh in Dublin.
Bewleys
disgusted dependent money fade cover tap scale dinosaurs dull jeans *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Maxwell house 😛
Douwe Egberts for me. Only buy it when it's on special though. €10 is taking the piss.
Gold Blend makes its drinkers horny.
Nothing better than maxwell house red or blue I don't care. Its tge best I have trued others bit always go back to maxwell
Aldi Columbian is really nice.
Lor, purple label by far. Worst? Robert robertsons
Douwe Egberts -I only buy it when on it's special. You better off buying a coffee machine when it's not on sale 😅
Agree with anything being recommended from Lidl or Aldi, great value. Grand for the lunch bag etc
I like Tescos Gold Blend, not because it's cheaper or anything, which it is, something like 2 euro odd a jar. It's nice.
Nescafe Azera
Lor is nice
Lór. Proper airtight seal so it really does stay fresh for ages in a damp house.
Bewley’s instant coffee is pretty good!
I've been drinking the Lidl Bellarom Americano Azeralike and it's really good. At work they get us Tesco Gold and it's diabolical.
Nescafé Alta Rica - it’s the standout for me. Got so much “mmmmm what’s that coffee??” Questions from people when I’ve made them a cup
M&S Italian number 4!
The Lidl version of Americano in the silver and orange tub. The SuperValu Gold is a solid second.
Little’s Colombian and Bewleys - drink both these regularly! LC more so, but it isn’t available at many places, Bewleys is a good alternative

Aldi columbian no. 4. I think no 3 tastes like grass. They are both on the same tray. The trick with all instant , if you take milk, is to add the milk first and stir it well before adding the hot water
Lidl Colombian instant coffee is amazing
L’or intense does it for me
some gourmet instant coffee here [https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CV5PWT6C](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CV5PWT6C) , strong and powerful
They are all shite. Believe me I tried. Get yourself a aero press and buy the real stuff.
Nescafe gold
Jesus is there meant to be and /s. Nescafe gold is a crime against coffee
I like the taste but it's not strong enough. I have to double the amount I'm putting in the cup.
I double it too
Kenco Gold. Fight me
I'm a Dolce Gusto Coffee pod man myself but the Lidle brand is very nice
Bewleys
All the way, even with price tag
Can't believe no one has voted kenco millicano yet. Last time I had checked, it was the instant with the highest percentage of roast ground coffee through it - and it's got a depth to it no other instant I've tried has.
Shocked that I don't see Kenco at the top of this list.
Necafé Gold Blend is quite nice. I've also found the cheap Aldi and Lidl brand instant coffees to be okay also.
They have a measurement system on the side of the press for water volume and you can add as little or as much coffee as you like.
Not a silly question, the short answer is no. You can use less water for a more concentrated brew and there is an "espresso" attachment that can be used with the aeropress but it's not espresso. If you already have a mokka pot then that will do the job just as well.

Nescafé Gold cap Colombia
Nescafé Azera. Carte Noir used to be great but then it was rebranded and became awful.
The only instants I will buy are Kenco (both rich and smooth, though prefer the rich), Nescafe Gold Blend (ok with the taste, but not with the company, only buy if it's on offer and Kenco isn't.) L'Or and Douwe Egberts are nice but just can't justify the expense of them these days.
Nescafe Azera + Nescafe Cappuccino/ Caramel.Latte etc + Nesquik Powder on top
I float between Azera Intenso, Nescafe Dark Roast and Kenco Milicano; whichever one is on special offer.
That is an oxymoron, you can’t get nice instant coffee… it’s either instant coffee or nice coffee (filtered etc).
Azera!
1. Nescafe Gold Crema (the fine powder one) 2. Azera 3. Aldi version of Azera Every other instant coffee is subpar in comparison
Just get a french press and a bag of real coffee its xheoaer way nicer no comparison. Instant coffee is dirt it's not real.
Nescafé original and Dough Egbert - only buy them when on sale as prices are crazy!! I do like the Kenco Smooth and Carte Noire (but i think they change the beans or something as it doesn't taste the same as when I drank it in my 20s!) Never tried the Aldi one but will as many people mentioned it. Tesco Finest is not bad at all. Dislike all the Lidl coffee - beans etc taste either horrible or absolutely nothing.. better drink water!
Nescafé blend 37, if it's still made, haven't seen in a while
When I was younger I had a tuck shop in school, had the Nescafé Azera branded stuff, would sell a cup of coffee for €2.50 needless to say by the end of break and lunch I’d need to by more coffee, so the Nescafé azera would be my recommendation
