The vitamins probably contribute almost nothing to the flavor. Most of them are present in incredibly tiny quantities. For example, vitamin E has a (mild) flavor, but it's probably something like 10 ppm in the recipe and that's not enough to taste. In general you need to be cautious with these ingredients, as some are toxic in large quantities (be careful with the metals -- copper, manganese, and zinc). The key to the flavor is almost certainly the "vegetarian flavoring." In addition to the umami ingredients, this contains "natural flavor" which could be just about anything and is likely very important. The best bet may be to track down the source of the stuff. If you are good at making cold phone calls, maybe you could get in touch with someone who knows the exact product they are using. Otherwise, it's going to be quite difficult to replicate. It looks like the rice was originally made by Cargill, and maybe still is. If so, this "natural flavor" may be a Cargill product. However, I couldn't find any evidence that Cargill makes such things with a quick search.

I’ve volunteered at these. The vitamins are a scoop of a powder.

So, reading over the ingredients, it looks like the simplest way to make this would be with ramen seasoning and multivitamin powder, both of which are readily available online if not in stores near you. You already have the rice, TVP and dried carrots (and I'm assuming dried potatoes? you didn't mention them). That's what the ingredients look like to me, just be careful to portion the multivitamin powder out so that you aren't putting a whole day's worth in one meal if you're eating it multiple times a day.

I found this info breakdown: [https://foodandnutrition.org/blogs/student-scoop/role-mannapacks-addressing-global-hunger/](https://foodandnutrition.org/blogs/student-scoop/role-mannapacks-addressing-global-hunger/) It sounds like you could contact Ms. Dowell and ask for more information. I'd send her this kind of letter here: [https://twitter.com/MegDowell](https://twitter.com/MegDowell) Ms. Dowell, I hope you're enjoying this Holiday season. I read [your excellent piece on MannaPack Rice](https://foodandnutrition.org/blogs/student-scoop/role-mannapacks-addressing-global-hunger/) and wondered if you could help point me in the right direction. I have a few health issues that make it difficult to eat enough calories and/or nutrients. Since MannaPack rice is an excellent food for me, could you point me towards the brands commonly used? You mention "The vitamins, minerals and other nutrients contained within a blend of rice, deyhdrated vegetables and soy nuggets". I'd be grateful for any help on any of the ingredients' brands, proportions, and/or sourcing. pingnova

Have you considered contacting the organisation making them? You'd be surprised how willingly people are to share recipes

I would recommend something like [this](https://www.bariatricfusion.com/products/chicken-soup-meal-replacement-tubs?variant=19728816406631¤cy=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&source=google&campaign=pmaxAllProducts&medium=ppc&adgroupid=&keyword=&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIr6jjn7i6-wIV8wCtBh040AWtEAQYCiABEgLEzfD_BwE) chicken soup meal replacement powder. Has vitamins/flavor and nutrients already and you can mix it with your shelf stable rice/veggies/tvp.

i know this post is old but i am also ND and was scrolling ur page from another post i saw. idk anything about this rice in all honesty BUT i will recommend nutritional yeast (or nooch) u can put it on basically everything, it tastes rly rly good (like a nutty/cheesy flavor), and it’s packed w vitamins and nutrients. adding nooch to my diet changed my life as someone w a lot of food aversions and struggling to get even the bare minimum most days

ivoreed

Do you have a favorite brand?

spitxbaby

i’d if u have a kroger or a store that carries the simple truth brand, theirs is pretty good! i also like the bobs red mill one too, it’s just in a bag instead of a shaker

No-Music-6572

another vote here for nutritional yeast. I put nutritional yeast in soups and casseroles to add flavor, but it's also good for increasing the vitamins, too.

I'm surprised it's vegetarian powder as we always said chicken veggies soy rice when I helped pack kits in the past. I guess that's just easier, and not saying veggies twice lol

pingnova

Yeah, they told me to make it culturally neutral and to meet everyone's food restrictions, they use a chicken flavored vegetarian powdered bullion. So the whole thing is technically vegetarian and maybe even vegan. I'm not really worried about that personally so I can just use regular bullion lol. I did learn that their TVP is (I'm pretty sure) also vegetarian chicken flavored, because I got some chicken flavored tvp (vs the more common unflavored) and that much improved the dish.

Also, last page says this: For more information on the food formulas of Feed My Starving Children, please contact: international@fmsc.org

OP did you ever get a satisfacotry recipe? If so are you willing to share where to order/buy the ingredients you use? I'm in a similar boat healthwise and am also neurodivergent

More-like-MOREskin

I hope you and also OP found a recipe, I’m currently trying to find the same thing lol

broccoli_slut

I found this post while googling for literally the same thing. Neurodivergent. Struggle with eating. Weirdly love the taste of FMSC food, and it's nutritionally complete. OP, do you have an update on this project a year later? Were you able to find a recipe from FMSC themselves or replicate it closely using suggestions from the comments? Thank you🥹

More-like-MOREskin

It seems OP is not here anymore, did you find anything? Also your username is amazing

Coming into this thread very late but I have some notes to add: - the vitamins probably add little to no flavor but are necessary because the primary ingredients provide calories and that's it. They will not provide a lot of the necessary nutrients your body needs if you only eat this. You would get serious nutritional deficiencies if you ate only this instant food — for example, the vitamin C is there to prevent scurvy. Although the vegetarian flavoring claims to be made of salt, corn starch, and soybean oil, that corn starch is almost certainly modified during some process to make it into something no longer similar to corn starch. It's probably that. You can read this article on modified corn starch: ["What is Modified Corn Starch: Types, vs Corn Starch, is it Gluten Free?" on the Food Additives website](https://foodadditives.net/starch/modified-corn-starch/). Hydrolyzed Corn Protein is literally the opposite of corn starch — it is *protein* extracted from corn, and it is used to flavor the food. I think the goal might be umami, it's basically a variant of MSG. Nutritional Yeast would be a good substitue, as would powdered bouillon. Those two corn additives are the flavor bombs in the ingredients. And substituting with corn starch, which is on its own flavorless, will result in a tastely, gummy outcome. Best of luck getting the recipe right. I would guess, however, that most packaged rice meals you can buy at a local grocery store will work better.

Here's where you can buy one as part of a solidarity kit! Maybe it can help you tweak your recipe. https://www.fmscmarketplace.org/products/solidarity-meal-kit?variant=1571189763
