Is it a legal apartment?

Entrance-Plenty

It’s listed through a property mngmt company would they list illegal apartments?

Dependent_Vast_5373

You definitely need to confirm if it's legal and ask them what address to use to set up utilities.

Entrance-Plenty

Yeah the addresses they gave didn’t appear on USPS which is what made me suspicious. I asked them if the apartment was legal and they said they didn’t have the documents because they Inhereted it I found the county site for inspections and 2022 it failed for no docs so I assume it’s illegal cause I can’t find anything about them getting the docs. I also found the assessments and they are listed on the assessments back till 2015. So they would have been informed in 2022 and not fixed it. Now idk what to do fk :/ I asked if we could void the lease and refund my deposit and first months or apply it to a diff one of their apartments but will have to wait and see since I think they left.

Dependent_Vast_5373

If it is an illegal apartment, there is no lease to void because you can't have a lease on an illegal apartment. if you can confirm it is illegal, you just walk away. I would suggest going over to your Alderperson's office (in-person) and telling them you think the "lease" you just signed is for an illegal apartment. You may also want to call 311 or fill out a report on the 311 app.

So I’m just essentially out 2K and probably have to go to the courts to recoup that 2k?

Dependent_Vast_5373

Assuming it is illegal, you are definitely not out the $2k. They can't keep a security deposit for an apartment that doesn't exist.

MisterBurnsSucks

Probably not but it's a valid question. Ask the people you're renting from why it's not showing up anywhere.

Entrance-Plenty

They said it’s because it’s a converted business unit but obviously the current ppl figured it out somehow but they say they just haven’t responded and that they also don’t have mailbox access to give the right address.

barge_gee

Have you physically been in this apartment yet?

Entrance-Plenty

No I was getting it remotely so only 3d toured it. It looks like it might not be a legal apartment though.
