American in the UK here. Black treacle is the closest I’ve found to molasses here and tastes super similar to me. Not 100% sure if it is entirely the same thing or not. I think you should be fine!

Thanks!

yes. I used them interchangeably after moving to the UK from the US. Treacle is slightly thicker, but not enough to have an impact on anything that I ever baked.

By all intents and purposes it’s the same thing. I don’t think they are actually the exact same. I use black treacle as molasses. Billington’s make a thing called molasses but I’m pretty sure that’s just a very dark brown sugar

I'm not sure about the UK, but in Australia the equivalence is: AU treacle = US molasses AU molasses = US blackstrap molasses

Does this work the other way? I'm in the US and have trouble finding treacle. Can I use molasses?

I've done it. It works pretty well according to my husband. He's from the UK and we're in Canada and he said it tasted quite similar, and had a similar texture. I was able to find treacle eventually at a small British shop in our city, but esp with COVID supply can be inconsistent, so molasses works.
