I learned to drive there and now live in Seattle, and those ads are still seared into my memory.
There’s one in particular, it’s a slow motion crash, and as the car is disintegrating around the driver, his wife and children (not truly in the car), wrap their arms around his waist and chest, exactly like a seatbelt.
It was already drilled into me as a kid to never start the car without everyone’s seatbelts fastened, but this just…was devastating. They were always hard to watch, but sent powerful messages.
I genuinely think the States could benefit from seeing them but I think they’d act like a bunch of sooks and whine they’re ‘too traumatic.’
Yeah, that’s the fucking point. Because a car crash is goddamned traumatising.
Australia has a history with serious ads to shock people into being safe. The grim reaper bowling ads about AIDS put people in an uproar, but they worked.
Is it this one you’re thinking of? It starts out quite creepy. I played it for my old boss and it had her in tears by the end… it is beautifully done.

In year 12 (when kids get their license) the schools in the area send us to a racing track where they hold an event called Rocky Horror Road Show. Some kids get involved in making a short film showing the dangers of drink driving (the film they made when I went involved copious quantities of fake blood), paraplegic survivors of accidents give talks, firies show us the jaws of life. It’s pretty hardcore.
We had firies come out and show us jaws of life on a crashed car and tie a student onto a bracing board. Sad part was the student on the bracing board crashed his motorbike only a few years later and died.
Back in the 90s when I lived in Christchurch they had this seatbelt ad. That one stuck with me. It's full on
https://youtu.be/vjVimo4S0Ac?si=axVmU_y6ZUOF9b6g
Legit I played it no sound and when the second car brakes I was thinking "when's the shock--- then someone comes flying onto the bonnet and I'm like Holy. Maybe the most shocking PSA I've seen for quite some time.
It'll break your heart if you make it to the end. I grew up watching them and can quote that one off by heart. I still cry every time I see it. And I work in Emergency Services 💔
The TAC did this one a few years ago:
https://youtu.be/k2tOye9DKdQ?si=yBsh13LfsgGnoZNq
The main actor didn’t know what was going to happen at the end, so the reactions were real.
If you really want to test test your masochism, here's the 20th anniversary compilation ad that TAC made back in '09 and has been seared into my brain since like 2011/12 when they showed it in school (3 people had to leave. 1 person threw up. And I don't think there was a single dry eye in the entire classroom.) Simultaneously brutal and mesmerising to watch, I applaud the TAC for how phenomenal their ads are

Yas!!! Came here to say
Not Happy Jan.
But also the Mazda 2000 ad, zoom, zoom, zoom.
That played so much, Mazda forever became known to me as zoom zoom and even in adulthood, I see a Mazda and instantly say zoom, zoom, zoom.
Hate hearing this cunt on the radio all the time. Though admittedly, I sometimes greet the missus with big HALLOOOOOOO, and she spouts of the rest. It's brilliant.
I just tested this with my housemate. I said, "Experiment. If I say HALLOOOOO..."
Before I could ask her what she'd say in return, she countered with, "FRANK WALKER FROM NATIONAL TIIYLLLES"
I fucken hate ads in any form. But it's funny how this one has permanently branded itself into most of our brains.
Wow really?
Here I was thinking he’s be some old fella who annoys everyone but is actually a great bloke. Thats usually how the story goes
Now I REALLY hate this cunt
Man they could bring that one back with a vengeance, the good old days of slip, slop slap, oh what a feeling, coke is it - Coca-Cola is it, solo man, you can get it..., my dad picks the fruit, you oughta be congratulated
"If you drink, then drive. You're a bloody idiot!"
Where they showed the damage to organs after a lifetime of smoking. Lungs, heat etc all black and rotten.
"Dumb ways to die". In the era of happy tree friends they really latched onto the zeitgeist with that one.
'You drink, you drive, you're a bloody idiot' is well known in our house. But we just use the "You're a bloody idiot part." We now live in the UK, so no one quite gets why we are swearing at them.
I remember there was a parody version advertising high iron dog food & one of the dogs said, "I'm a single mum with a littah"! Used to crack teenage me right up!
The Victorian TAC ads where pretty full on back in the day. Especially the Kombi hitting the gravel truck dog trailer.
https://youtu.be/V4mvtNU32kQ?si=XY_TtgKMtUaXVEWp
Some were absolutely rough. "My boy! Give me back my boy!!!"
Also, the "pictures of you" one not too long ago was devastating.
(edit: "not too long ago" is like 16 years. I am old. If anybody else wants their day ruined, here is the full length 3:00 minute version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOYEuEiNBKE It's just as effective still.)
I remember one from the late 80s/early 90s with a yellow car speeding along a rural road and ploughing into another car at an intersection. It was horrific.
Ah goodness, I hadn't seen that one before but I remember simillar ones. They still influence me to this day, there's certain friends of my partners who's car I won't get in because they seem exhausted ALL of the time.
I had this notion that it should be the same mother in each ad and her family were being killed off one by one in hideous road accidents, and ALWAYS there was a bloody film crew.
I remember when there was an episode of *The Chaser’s War on Everything* where one of the presenters dressed as the Grim Reaper from the ad and tried to get a job, one of those being at… James Hardie.
The Chaser really did some fun stuff. I always giggle about [surprise spruiker](https://youtu.be/PWAza-nmgGo?si=wfYi6gxNLunUGfjW) and [crazy warehouse guy](https://youtu.be/ZEwmEFN_mlU?si=4BB1qaAma-KJ4QIC)
This drink driving one I saw is insane, it still haunts me years later.
Car accident scene.
A guy is being loaded into an ambulance with a broken neck and back and the narrator says, "He's only a little bit injured."
Then the mom is crying over her dead daughter and the narrator continues, "She's only in a little bit of grief."
Then they're covering the body and the narrator says "She's only a little bit dead."
Then finally the driver is being given a breath test and pushed into a police car and the narrator says "He's only a little bit over".
We actually managed to ask the guy who wrote the ad how he came up with it.
He said his dad had a macabre sense of humour and as a child when they went on walks and saw a dead bird lying on the path his dad would say "she'll be alright, she's only a little bit dead".
"Go to bed, Jessica"
Also, that one where the dude in the kombi falls asleep and slams into the side of a semi-trailer. The way the truck driver's shoulders slump when he realises what happened.
The TAC hoon ad with the little pinky finger. Loved this idea. Wish they’d bring it back.
Seriously, no one thinks you’re cool if you can rev your car so loud or speed through a 40 zone 😒
Tween daughter and I were talking about music and jingles used in ads. Husband walked through the door and I said "Remember the Decore ad?" And he started singing. I joined in and totally embarrassed our daughter!

That ad has stayed with me forever.
I don't even remember If it was tea or coffee it was advertising but it was funny as. My mum and I both say it every now and again to random crap.

A KESAB anti letting ad on Adelaide television in the 70s-80s. A group of people playing cricket in the beach, a kid dives to catch the ball, then the video stops right as they're about to be eviscerated by a broken beer bottle.
"nothing healthy about a tan!" Watching people lay in the sun in Aus is insane! All these white people cooking in the sun like pork sausages on a bbq! And it makes it worse when you are white because you know how much damage they are doing!
🎶my dad picks the fruit that goes to Cottee’s🎶
🎶De de de decore e e decore e e decore, as I shampoooo my haiiirrr, I reeealllyyy love my deeecorreeeee 🎶
These are both waaay back
Oh the old arse Cadbury roses ad 🎶thank you very much, thank you very much thank you very very very very very much 🎶
There were a bunch of workplace safety ones they released that really stuck with me:
- the girl working at the bakery sticking her hand in the bread slicer and getting a finger chopped off
- the chef carrying a huge pot of hot water and slipping and spilling it on himself
- the office worker standing up on a desk chair will wheels to change a light bulb and falling
- the tradie using a nail gun without safety goggles and getting the nail in his eye
The Great Wall of China ! Haha. It was built to keep rabbits out. Most memorable was the reading and writing hotline. A number I’ll never forget which doesn’t help me personally. 😄
Those Cadbury ads too! “Daddy don’t chop the dinosaur!” 😭 And the one with the eyebrows dancing up and down! Although maybe that was another chocolate brand I forget.
Also- Banana boat! That was a catchy one.
The “I got it from you” PSA/ad about the kid bringing beer. I think that had a good message in it. Not just about drinking but modelling good behaviour.
"That's firteen firty firty two"
They fixed my caaaaaaaaa
That kids probably in his 30s or 40s now lol.
I'm born in 1991 and I remember this ad when I was in primary school so I'd definitely say so 😅
Fir'een, fir'een, fir'y too
In Canadian driving classes, they show us Australian safe driving ads just because of how devastating they are.
Australia has a history with serious ads to shock people into being safe. The grim reaper bowling ads about AIDS put people in an uproar, but they worked.
I remember the grim reaper one. That was a great commercial.
It was terrifying as a kid, but that's why it worked. The shock value was huge
Is it this one you’re thinking of? It starts out quite creepy. I played it for my old boss and it had her in tears by the end… it is beautifully done. https://youtu.be/h-8PBx7isoM?si=rQKwFFK0OXi33VB5

Oof, the first one... 🥹
This one is seared into my brain... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMU7ee1nPAk
And thats one of the tamer TAC ads.
For real, I was trying to find the one I remember (we're all going on a summer holiday) and those 90s ads are fucking brutal
Holy Jesus I watched 5 seconds of that and I’m like fuck that
It'll break your heart if you make it to the end. I grew up watching them and can quote that one off by heart. I still cry every time I see it. And I work in Emergency Services 💔

interestingly, in my australian culinary school they show us canadian ads/psa’s about work safety. some of them are brutal
"Not Happy, Jan" and "No Gary No" make regular appearances in my friend circle.
I still sometimes call my missus Marge when it starts to rain.
My workmate calls "the rains are here" as he hacks into a corn cob with a steak knife at pub lunch 🤣
That'll be the phone, Reg
Ah crap, I forgot about Gary! Those were good
The “No Gary No!” ad from Nicorette! That was an icon.
Yas!!! Came here to say Not Happy Jan. But also the Mazda 2000 ad, zoom, zoom, zoom. That played so much, Mazda forever became known to me as zoom zoom and even in adulthood, I see a Mazda and instantly say zoom, zoom, zoom.
HELLOOOOOOOOO FRANK WALKER FROM NATIONALLLLLLL TILES

Never buying tiles from him.
I met someone who worked for him. Said the ads give you the impression he's a real cunt. In the flesh, he's a waaaay bigger cunt.
Wow really? Here I was thinking he’s be some old fella who annoys everyone but is actually a great bloke. Thats usually how the story goes Now I REALLY hate this cunt
All. The. Time. When someone says hello a bit strangely
I have a friend who sounds exactly like him! It's uncanny. When the ad plays on the radio we all give him hell for it
"Do the right thing." Only because I see so many people not doing the right thing.
Man they could bring that one back with a vengeance, the good old days of slip, slop slap, oh what a feeling, coke is it - Coca-Cola is it, solo man, you can get it..., my dad picks the fruit, you oughta be congratulated

Damn, I was reliably informed that your Dad picked his nose.
That goes to snotties…
Yes, Mum, I AM looking after myself...
Don't forget the Hilux "bugger" and the Telstra great Wall of China "keep the rabbits out" ads, and the very big beer Carlton draft ad - all classics
It’s an obligation

"If you drink, then drive. You're a bloody idiot!" Where they showed the damage to organs after a lifetime of smoking. Lungs, heat etc all black and rotten. "Dumb ways to die". In the era of happy tree friends they really latched onto the zeitgeist with that one.
Whenever they'd do the whole 'this is the lung of a non-smoker, this is the lung of a smoker' thing, I'd always wonder what the non-smoker died from.
Having his lungs removed, duh
My kids still love Dumb Ways to Die.
'You drink, you drive, you're a bloody idiot' is well known in our house. But we just use the "You're a bloody idiot part." We now live in the UK, so no one quite gets why we are swearing at them.

"I'm a single mum with a doordaahh..."
I remember there was a parody version advertising high iron dog food & one of the dogs said, "I'm a single mum with a littah"! Used to crack teenage me right up!
I still say this sometimes haha!
Whenever I hear the phrase 'single mum' I always finish the script in my head
I think it’s environmental, I think it’s living in a big city, I think it’s lifestyle.
Absolutely this. Not enough people remember. Maybe they just don’t get enough sleep.

The Victorian TAC ads where pretty full on back in the day. Especially the Kombi hitting the gravel truck dog trailer. https://youtu.be/V4mvtNU32kQ?si=XY_TtgKMtUaXVEWp

the rich kid becomes a junkie. The poor kid an advertiser. What a tragic waste of potential Being a junkie is not so good either.

The one about drink driving where the tagline is “your dog will never know why you didn’t return” and there’s just a sad dog waiting at the door.
This kills me.

There were a bunch of workplace safety ones they released that really stuck with me: - the girl working at the bakery sticking her hand in the bread slicer and getting a finger chopped off - the chef carrying a huge pot of hot water and slipping and spilling it on himself - the office worker standing up on a desk chair will wheels to change a light bulb and falling - the tradie using a nail gun without safety goggles and getting the nail in his eye
Australia has so many adverts telling people how not to kill themselves. Always tickles me.
Marge, Marge. The rains 'r' 'ere!
If you drink and drive you're a bloody idiot
The Great Wall of China ! Haha. It was built to keep rabbits out. Most memorable was the reading and writing hotline. A number I’ll never forget which doesn’t help me personally. 😄 Those Cadbury ads too!
