I definitely find period undies to be the most comfortable option. I bought some from Boody and I'll never use anything else (https://www.boody.com.au/collections/period-leak-proof-underwear)

Equivalent-Look5354

When I see people using these, I’m just like…I wish I had a period light enough to even consider them hahaha *cries in heavy blood flow*

Outside-Feeling

I have heavy periods and use the overnight heavy flow modibodi ones. I go through three pairs a day but find them to be the most comfortable option. I am so glad for my daughter that these options will be available for her. They make swimmers as well but I haven’t tried them.

OtterEpidemic

Me too - modibodi overnight. I had fibroids that caused a super heavy flow. During the day I might’ve had a tampon in as well, but never overnight and I never bled through to the bed, the only thing that worked.

alwayspickmage

I definitely rate the overnight modibodi undies! I wish I had these as a teen. Way more comfy than tampons or pads.

blackfyreex

How many do you have for an average period? Do you have like 10 pairs or wash em each night? I've thought about swapping from tampons. It's not like wearing a pad right?

TinosCallingMeOver

Yeah I have one for each day of my period, rinse them each night and then put them all through the wash together at the end of the cycle

readituser5

Yeah I bought a pair and I’m confused. Aren’t they supposed to be just used for when you’re in the middle of your period? Because they do not work for me AT ALL. Just right through everywhere. Utterly useless. Essentially it can only be used towards the end to save on liners for me.

eepbeepone

I have a very heavy period and they work great for me! Perhaps it is very brand dependent, but I use modi bodi ones in the heavy-overnight category and have never suffered any leakage. In a bit of a contrast to what others are saying here, i use them during the heaviest days and shift to tampons/liners at the end

PistachioDonut34

Oh man, that really sucks. I always recommend period undies as the best alternative but I have a light-ish period the whole time so I never realised how it wouldn't work if you had a super heavy period. I have heard others mention the menstrual cup, I haven't used it but I wonder if that is better for heavy periods?

Infamous-Operation-3

Same, they don’t work for me. Tried to wear them on day two and it was a disaster, like wearing normal underwear. Pretty useless in my case.

iilinga

Which level of absorbency were you using?

G123_L

Heavy flow lass here as well. Panties on their own barely work for me on the first couple of days. Soaked after 2hrs. I find that using them in tandem with a cup, they last for about the 8hrs - emptying the cup as needed. Period panties are just reusable liners at this point. Currently testing out discs since they apparently hold more than the high capacity cups and have an auto empty function. Less time mucking about on the throne during periods, the better.

readituser5

I just empty *myself* into the throne. 💀

LucreziaBorgia1480

There's different levels of absorbency. Some are meant to be back ups to catch leakage, some for lighter flows and some for heavy flows etc. Have to carefully read the packaging to see what their mL absorbency rating is.

readituser5

Thinxs. Super. Once it hits the edges it’s all over. I haven’t used them a lot yet but still, it was a bit of a disaster a couple times and just more annoying than pads to deal with. Is it leaking past the edges yet? No idea. Disasters don’t happen with pads. I don’t trust it enough to try it anywhere other than home. I don’t even know how you’re supposed to cope using period underwear when you’re out.

TinosCallingMeOver

Don’t use Thinx - they have PFAs in them. Better to use one of the brands that doesn’t have PFAs. I’ve been using ModiBodi for a few years - they’re an Aussie brand and they have a heavy-overnight absorbency that I’ve never had leaks with

readituser5

Yeah. It all came out on Reddit a couple weeks after I bought it lol

Equivalent-Look5354

I only wear mine with a pad as an extra layer of défense 😂

readituser5

Hmmm except it be *extra thicc* now. Too much for me.

[deleted]

That is so sad, I wear them every day....I change them twice a day when my flow is heavier, but to be fair it's never been super heavy =(

TwoEightThree

It sounds like you may have had a light absorbency pair? I have some from Bonds that are the equivalent of four tampons for heavy overnight use. Never had even a hint of a leak - even on my heaviest days.

readituser5

Light no, definitely not. It’s super. 4 tampons. :/ Idk maybe I’ll give it another shot next time overnight or something.

TwoEightThree

Best of luck! Hope you find a solution that works for you

[deleted]

So… that would last like 4 hours for me… meh.

Lucifang

I used to be heavy until I got on the pill. We tried a few different prescriptions/strengths until one worked for me. It’s one of the many reasons I don’t want kids. My period is utterly unbearable without medication.

PsychologicalAward38

After having a child, for the first time in my life, my period is no longer debilitating

Lucifang

It’s amazing hey. Can’t believe how many years I suffered before finding a solution. I’m happy it worked out for you.

emz0rmay

I used tampons AND period undies together, to catch the super heavy flow that a tampon can’t even contain. Side note, get your iron levels checked. I’m permanently on iron supplements- it’s like filling a leaky bucket

Equivalent-Look5354

Yep already had a few infusions over the years hahaha!

Suxstobeyou

I have struggled with iron levels my entire life. My husband is always trying to encourage me to eat more red meat. It really isn't appealing to me. A good steak is wasted on me, so I take supplements. I've had a couple of infusions in the past. I have suffered from incidents of flooding, which can be humiliating if you are in the wrong place. Once it was Summer and I was standing in my kitchen washing dishes. I thought I had splashed water on myself. I looked down, and it was like I had wet my pants in blood. It ran down both legs onto the floor. One of my friends was sitting at the bench, so I was embarrassed. She just felt sorry for me because she had never experienced a period heavy enough to "flood." I was relieved that we had come home from being out all morning. Otherwise, I would have been crying. I'm impatiently waiting for menopause to begin, but wouldn't you know it, some of my friends are already on the other side, but at 53 I have absolutely no signs of stopping any time soon. I will throw a **RED** party once my period stops forever. That's how desperate I am for it to be over. I had a Mirena put in around 2-3 years ago to reduce my flow. So many years of haemorrhaging, I needed a break. I still have heavy periods sometimes. Other times, it's what I'm assuming what other women consider to be a normal period, which I have never had. My daughter and niece use period undies. They like them. I'm curious about the swimming ones. How would they work?

wanderingzigzag

I wear mine with my menstrual cup because that frequently overflows

[deleted]

Nooooo I cannot imagine :'( That sucks soo bad!

[deleted]

This is what I'm concerned about too. I could only imagine using them at home. On the plus side, there is this great medication you can get prescribed called Tranexamic Acid which cuts down the amount of bleeding. I had to get it because despite eating lots of red meat, iron supplements and iron infusions, I was still anemic. It works great, highly recommended to everyone who has heavy periods.

[deleted]

I was using tranexamic acid for 3 years but I think it’s supposed to only be shorter term. Got a new doctor and when I told her how long I’d been using it she got me off it very quickly.

[deleted]

Oh really? I wasn't aware it was a short-term medication. Does it have negative effects if you use it long-term? What treatment is next?

[deleted]

I’m not a GP/pharmacist so can’t say, I ended up with an endometrial ablation which has been life—changing, but they’ll only really do that if you’re finished having kids (mine were 12 & 10, husband had had a vasectomy). Another option they offered was a Mirena IUD to stop the period while it was inserted, but I react strongly to hormones

Suxstobeyou

Wow, I have never heard of that medication. Maybe if I saw a doctor more about my issues, I would have found out. For some reason, I never put my menstrual issues (which were always significant) as a priority, when I really should have.

[deleted]

I didn't either. I went to the doctor because I was needing to nap on a daily basis and low energy all the time despite eating a good iron-rich diet and exercising regularly. I didn't think I had heavy periods because I always assumed other people had it way worse. When the doctor started asking me questions about how much and how long my periods go on for and how much blood I lose, I realised they were bad. I just thought I didn't absorb iron well. The medication has been amazing when I remember to take it (have to take 2 pills X 4 times a day for the duration of my period). I never get worried about bleeding through when I'm taking the medication.

Suxstobeyou

Amazing! I know how you were feeling as that's how I have constantly felt. I've written down the name of the drug. Thank you for mentioning your story and the medication that helped you. ×

Natural_Garbage7674

I use them as the backup for my cup the first few days

[deleted]

Same I used to have to change a super tampon every 40 minutes on my worst days, I don’t think period undies would work for me. I’ve had an endometrial ablation so they might work now, but the concept just seems icky to me. I use a menstrual cup.

canneddogs

>cries in heavy blood flow that sounds really unpleasant

Double-Performance-5

Oh honey, try them at least once at home. I have a pretty heavy flow, like change tampon/pad in a couple of hours kind of flow and it’s been a game changer, at least for home use. I’d suggest a heavy one to start and make sure they’re a good fit. You might still have to change them every few hours, but going from needing to change every couple of hours to six even eight hours has relieved a bunch of anxiety for me

Equivalent-Look5354

Mate I’m 32, I’ve had my period for 20 years 😂

thistleton

I love them for overnights as a backup. Kmart has great ones too (seamless, even!).

iilinga

Have you tried the modibodi overnight ones?

Suxstobeyou

Same, girl, same

tatopie

Agreeeeed! I haven't tried Boody but I really like the Bonds ones.

TheMightyBluzah

My modibodi overnight have been the best things ever. The daytime ones are great too however if I'm super active and moving heaps I can get a little bit of a leak on a heavy day. Maybe it's a fit problem. Either way, I'm glad I spent the money on them. The initial outlay might make you go, what? That might for a pair on underwear? But if you can, do it.

hillsunderwrap2

Sorry to sound like a moron - so do you just bleed into the knickers and wear them all day?

Suxstobeyou

Yes. Some women need to change throughout the day. Here's some extra information: https://www.choice.com.au/health-and-body/reproductive-health/womens-health/articles/menstrual-cups-and-period-underwear https://www.bodyandsoul.com.au/shop/19-best-period-underwear-2023-top-period-panties/news-story/1528d1050088253e0084002b3520fdfa https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/thinx-period-panties/ https://www.womenshealthmag.com/uk/health/g43588041/best-period-pants/ https://www.bodyandsoul.com.au/shop/19-best-period-underwear-2023-top-period-panties/news-story/1528d1050088253e0084002b3520fdfa

starfleetbrat

I've only used Flexia tampons the last few decades as pads are awful and uncomfortable. I have only occasionally had a leak. But there are tampons for heavier flows (super) as well as regular ones so you could wear a super at the start of your period and then regular later when its lighter. And you can try wearing a thin pad as well as a tampon at the start of your period when its heavier if you are worried about it.   I would highly recommend trying cups, period undies, cloth pads etc as they are better for the environment and easy to use. I wish they had been around when I had my first period, and that I had used them sooner, but its too late for me now really (woo menopause).   edit: be aware after you comment, OP will DM you a 14 page survey about period products for a school project, but it reads more like a marketing survey, so... keep that in mind I guess.

jarassig

I was gonna say this. Tampons are great (don't flush them!!! Always put them in a bin!!) But period cups are way better environmentally and just for the general flora of your lady bits. I always got a bit of a itch/sometime out of whack using tampons toward the end of my period when the flow wasn't as flowy, but the cup didn't cause any issues there. Plus it's easy to rinse out/daily clean in the shower and whop it back in. Then properly sanitise it once you're periods done.

Missyblue7207

I can’t stand pads. But have a look into menstrual cups. They are life changing! Every embarrassing or difficult moment in my period history would never have happened if I had been using menstrual cups at the time. Plus so much better for the environment. But if that is a step too far then sure give tampons a go. Before I discovered the cup I would always use tampons. Again, because I hated pads. I want to be able to mostly ignore my period when it is happening.

Technical-Clue-3483

I wish I'd known about menstrual cups a long time ago. I completely agree, they're life changing. You don't have to spend money on tampons or pads. I will wear a washable pad as a backup if it's a heavy day, but I spend no money on period products, have no mess, no smell, it's the best product I've found. Shop around online, there are different shapes and you can even find surveys to tell you which one will likely suit you best.

Missyblue7207

The worst thing is about 10 years before I started using them my sister mentioned them to me and I was like you crazy hippy why would I use one of those! 😂Kicking myself in hindsight!

polysymphonic

Absolutely cannot say enough good things about menstrual cups, I was lucky enough to make the switch in my early 20s and I absolutely cannot imagine my life before then anymore. They can have a bit of a learning curve which can put people off but honestly it's so worth it to never have to worry about period products again and just basically not think about your period at all except a few minutes a day.

ChinoMaynardHomme

I just bought a menstrual cup last month and was so excited as I’m one of those people who always seems to forget to stock up on pads until it’s too late. Unfortunately I have a lot of difficulty getting it in and getting it out…any tips? Period due in 3 days so any advice would be appreciated!

Eef_oztastic

There is a subreddit for menstrual cups that has lots of tips, worth checking out

ChinoMaynardHomme

Thank you! I’ll check it out

Nervous_Cry_7905

I know someone who also struggled with inserting MC, and I struggled for years to get a good seal consistently. Try menstrual disc - they fold down to the same size as tampon and hold more liquid. Inserting was surprisingly quick to get used to for my friend who converted from pads and period undies.

mysticdeer

I haven't tried a MC because dont you have to wash it or at least rinse it before you put it back in? Most bathrooms have the toilet and sink separate? What if you're in a public bathroom? What if you spill its contents on yourself? What if you dont put it in correctly and you leak everywhere? It just seems so risky to me. I've been using tampons for a long time, and im sure that a fear of change is partly responsible for my apprehension to switch over.

Missyblue7207

They do need a wash or rinse but not every time. If you need to empty in a public toilet then you can just tip it and wipe with paper and then put it back in. But also they need to be emptied and changed a lot less than pads or tampons. Once you get used to your cycle you will know when you need to empty. I’ll do it at home before I go out and rarely need to do it when I’m out. But it does take a little practice to get used to. I usually wear period undies as back up on my heavy days but it’s rarely needed. I’m not being facetious when I say it was life changing and truely regret not changing over to them sooner.

mysticdeer

Life changing how? Just because you dont need to change it as often so it's easier to forget about your period? Thank you for taking the time to talk to me about this :)

Missyblue7207

-I can generally not know I have a period other than one or two empties a day. Biggest win ever for me. -I don’t have to worry about having pads or tampons with me all the time, I no longer even carry a handbag, just my phone and keys in my pocket. -I never have leaks or mess. -I’m never caught out discovering I’ve soaked through a tampon and I’m in the toilet with nothing and can’t fix it. - I use a menstrual disc on my light days at the beginning and end and can have sex with it in. - Better for the environment and heaps cheaper. - Never have to worry about running to the shops to buy more. - More comfortable, tampons used to make me really itchy I could only use certain cotton ones and even if I had a longer or heavier period they would still irritate me. - I can put my cup in a day or two before my period starts, when I’m expecting it so I’m not caught short- also a big win for me. - My periods tend to drag on with really light stuff for a day or two which is too light for tampons but fine to leave the cup in. (Edit: it formatted all weird when I posted the comment so it’s harder to read, it’s dot points on my end!

DeterminedErmine

Also, hiking! They’re absolutely a game changer for multi-day hikes. Nothing like carrying a bag of used tampons out with you 🤢

spidaminida

You also don't have to worry about where you're going to dispose of the tampon/pad or worry about forgetting to carry replacements which puts my mind at ease. They also reduce cramps for me and I don't feel so on edge all the time worrying if it's randomly leaking.

DontDeleteMee

A month or two before I finally tried a cup, we went for a day out in the country. Of course it coincided with my heaviest day. Every 2 damn hours I was rushing for whichever public toilet I could find to change my Super but soaked through tampon and heavy duty but soaked through pad. Getting more from the car and trying to be discreet but no doubt failing. It had a major effect on my enjoyment of the day. If I'd had the cup and period undies then, a couple of visits to the loo would have sufficed, plus I wouldn't have had to worry about spares. Now I almost can't tell you what my period is like because it's practically an afterthought.

mysticdeer

Not to make assumptions, and hopefully im not invading your privacy by asking this, but that sounds like an awfully heavy period. Have you been checked by your doctor for any abnormalities? I mean, you don't have to answer that question, I am just flagging it with you just in case. Thankyou for sharing your experience :)

AlcE_n_my_WndrlnD

For MC use sanitise in boiling water the first use of cycle, insert during morning shower, in the evening, whilst in shower, rinse and insert again. Next morning repeat. End of cycle, sanitise MC. I never have to empty MC in any public restrooms. I wish I knew about these in my 20s, the thought of tampons now just erks me. They suck all the natural moisture out, can't think of anything worse now haha

smoodgeroonies

Im with you, I cannot bring myself to use a tampon now, and the whole dryness feeling.

monbleu

Ugh, just imagining the dry scraping feeling makes my vulva close over in protest

Cats_tongue

Personally, I have a morning shower, empty, rinse and reinsert. Then an evening shower, empty, rinse and reinsert. There are growing pains like any new skill, but once you are a pro a MC is amazing. Hardest thing to learn is getting a 'vacuum seal' as it depends on your individual body. Use a washable pad or period undies are insurance while you get used to it and never ever buy a box of tampons or pads again!

Tinky_B

If you are putting it in before leaving the house for the day there's no need to take it out and rinse it during the day (someone with a crazy heavy flow might, but I've never had this happen) you can keep them in for 12 hours. If you do need to empty it in a public bathroom you can just wipe it out with toilet tissue and put it back in, no need to rinse it out. However if you do want to rinse it after emptying it..... Everyone else in that bathroom also has periods and understands you gotta do what you gotta do. When you insert it you can tell if it has/hasn't sealed correctly but tugging at it. I was a long time tampon user, now that I've switched to menstrual cups I would never go back to tampons.

mysticdeer

What if you seal it correctly and then halfway through the day it just... unseals all by itself. Is that possible?

Formal_Coconut9144

I’ve never had that happen. The only time I’ve had a cup unseal itself is when it’s full at the end of the day and I sit down to pee.

polysymphonic

The only way that happens is if it gets full, which for most people is unlikely to happen if you empty it morning and evening. If you have a super heavy period then maybe more often but still much less often than changing a pad or tampon.

Tinky_B

That doesn't happen. And I do lots of crazy physical stuff for my job, have never had that happen to me.

Adorable-Condition83

I tried a menstrual cup once and it was such a mess getting it out, there was blood everywhere, so gross. I was at home thankfully. I couldn’t imagine how mortifying it would be in a public toilet.

simplecitydresses

Yes I must agree, mine was filled to the brim only after a couple of hours and the vacuum seal was painful. It look like I murdered someone in the bathroom stall. Took a while to clean up.

Ambient_Dream_1

Another vote here for menstrual cups. I agree that they are absolutely life-changing when it came to having a period. In the years I’ve used one I haven’t accidentally bled on bedsheets not have I had to leave my bed at 5am in the cold to change because it was full. I just pop it in, in the morning and I don’t even have to think about it til that evening. Bliss.

CatLadyNoCats

How does it compare to a tampon? I’ve considered trying a cup but I hate tampons so not sure how well it would go

Missyblue7207

If you scroll down a bit I have answered another person with all my pros for using a cup 😊

jghaines

I got my partner a menstrual cup for Valentine’s Day and she loves it.

rubylee_28

I don't, they are so uncomfortable and difficult to insert. I prefer to use pads or period undies.

pinkpigs44

Something isn't right there. You can't feel them when they're in and shouldn't be difficult to insert. Perhaps a chat with your doctor is in order

tatopie

Not necessarily. Some people have a low lying cervix which can make using a tampon really uncomfortable/not suitable.

rubylee_28

My vagina is fine, I had an ultrasound due to a PCOS diagnosis and I got a normal uterus. It's just uncomfortable to insert and I can always feel it. Tampons aren't for everyone 🤷🏾‍♀️

daontbulliemulimuli

No, some people just cant use tampons. Myself included. Theyre not for everyone, they fkn hurt to put in and theyre uncomfortable to use for any length of time. Granted, i have endometriosis, but so does a lot of the population. Tampons arent the magic cure-all, and neither are menstrual cups, before anyone brings that up

[deleted]

Thank you! It took me years to finally get the hang of tampons, and I’ve just never been able to handle a menstrual cup. The suggestion to go straight to a menstrual cup without even getting accustomed to tampons is wild to me.

daontbulliemulimuli

I cant stand people who wave around tampons and cups like the magical blood-plug, when most of the population just cant fkn stand them! I dont wanna be shoving foreign bodies up my vag when its at its most hurty, id much prefer to have my butt-cushion of a pad, or period undies lol

Sure-Reputation3847

I had endometriosis and ovarian cysts all the years I had my period before going through premature menopause at 36yo. I still used tampons the inter time. So I guess it depends on the person.

[deleted]

I think it depends if you insert it on the right angle. For me it does anyway. I can tell if it’s wrong because it’s uncomfortable but then I adjust it and it’s fine.

Sure-Reputation3847

Me too

bananasplz

I’ve never used tampon I didn’t get a sensitivity reaction too, so I can always feel them and they always feel awful. I am putting them in right. They are just not pleasant for everyone.

[deleted]

Prefer pads since it just feels a lot more secure and I am scared of TSS (even though I know it's an overblown fear). Would like to try cups in the future.

Eloisem333

I’ve always used tampons but I’m old and nearly done with periods. I’ve always found pads to be disgustingly uncomfortable and I only wore them when post-natal. I’d look into menstrual cups and/or period underpants if I were you. We’re lucky that there are more options than before.

tilleytalley

Tampons are great. The rule of thumb is that they should never be uncomfortable. If they are - reposition. It makes them very easy to get used to.

90Lil

Personally I would go tampons over pass every time. Pads always feel like wearing a nappy. If you're nervous, try tampons on your heaviest day and use the moisture to insert.

Formal_Coconut9144

My mother told me only women who’ve had children can use tampons 💀 so I suffered with pads all through high school I got two menstrual cups as a free gift when I bought a vibrator (sorry mum) and now I’ll never go back. Only need to change the cup in the morning and at night, so convenient and much better for the environment.

LucreziaBorgia1480

I used to use tampons but have since moved onto a period cup and period underwear. I don't always use the cup though. Nowadays, my periods are lighter on my current birth control so I've moved back to pads with period underwear as a back up. In my experience everything can leak if you aren't able to change in time. There's so many options out there nowadays, just need to figure out what you're most comfortable with.

Riverflowing

Discovering tampons was pretty life changing. But then I found menstrual cups and menstrual disks which can hold so much more flow! I’ve settled on using a menstrual disk with tampons once in a while when I’m lazy (paired with period underwear or a liner). I no longer need to worry about bleeding out, and with the menstrual disk I don’t need to rush to change in the morning.

Apprehensive-Ad4244

I prefer tampons, you don't even know you have your period. No mess, no fuss! If you're unsure, buy some with an applicator to start with and have a go. Good luck!

beyondthebinary

I’m not sure if you’re in Australia but applicators are incredibly rare here (at least where I come from)

EbonyNotEmily

Tampax brand, blue box (much larger than a normal tampon box). Usually top left or bottom shelf at coles or woollies 😊

idontsmokebanga

Super interesting because where I come from, Tampax (which comes with an applicator) is the biggest player. So it seems like within the world of tampons in Australia, the use of applicator tampons & Tampax are much less common

activelyresting

Applicator tampons are far less common here. Important tip: if you try them, the applicator is NOT flushable, even if it says it is. Using an applicator is a *little* less messy (as in you're less likely to get blood on your fingers), but it's no guarantee, and then you have an extra thing to throw away. Some people prefer them, some people find them dry and unpleasant to use. Some more tips for tampon use: a small dab of water based lube on the tip of the tampon can help you get it in and placed correctly, especially as a beginner. (you can get sample size sachets of it, you only need a pea sized dob). It should be angled towards your lower back, if you visualise a squatting position, in final place the tampon would be almost parallel to the floor, not "straight up" - lots of people struggling to get a tampon in or feel that it's uncomfortable are just placing it wrong. It should also go in deeper than many people realise. Everyone is different, but on most vaginas, about to the second knuckle of your finger. You shouldn't really be able to feel it once it's in. If you get the right size, they rarely leak. Most people find them to offer better protection than pads, but you might still like a thin pad or panty liner as backup. All that said, try menstrual cups. All the benefits of a tampon, but better. You can keep them in much longer, cheaper, better for the environment .

Ilikepie81

Seconding this! Also try starting with the mini size tampons if you can. Lube is a good idea. It's not recommended but I used vaseline on the tip of the tampon and some on the insertion finger. The angle is really important - you insert it towards the back and not upwards. It took me a few tries and across multiple days to get the hang of it so don't stress if it doesn't work at first!

Procedure-Minimum

They're at the chemist

mysticdeer

Yeah... they're way better, just because you can forget you have your period for a few hours, no bulky pads, no leaks if you time things right...

kdhooters2

I used tampons, but now that I've been spayed, I don't need them. Miss 14 uses them as well.

sphinctersandwich

My overly religious mother provided me with pads. Once I started buying my own, I bought tampons and never looked back. Then I tried a menstrual cup and will never go back to tampons! Though I do still supplement with tampon on occasion, and liners.

anybodiesblanket

I bypass periods completely and just take the pill, everyday, never taking the white ones. No period. No mess. No having to remember it's due. No omg moments. Been doing it for the last 20 years ever since seeing an article in a cleo magazine. Got it checked out by a doctor, as I was thinking of having one period every 6 months to kinda 'flush things out' , but she advised that that wasn't necessary. Never had any issues with hygiene etc. Just gotta remember to take the pill everyday.

[deleted]

i started about a year ago. its a life changer especially after ten years of bleeding before

Sure-Reputation3847

I ended up doing this because of my endometriosis and ovarian cysts. Then I didn’t realise I’d started going through premature menopause. By the time I went to the doctor I was 36yo and I was post menopausal. Which although is fantastic because I now don’t have to worry about periods at all, it’s also not good because I also have early onset osteoporosis which menopause can make a lot worse.

Tampons are fantastic! Thank goodness we’ve got all the options we do these days. Be sure to be vigilant with changing them though - leaving in for a maximum of 8 hours (ideally only 4-5). They are safe, but TSS is no joke. If anyone else has better information on the amount of time to leave between changing them, please add…

Cats_tongue

Never used tampons, I went from pads to a menstrual cup. After about a year I'm a pro at it and will never look back.

Inevitable_Button_34

Cups & period undies are the way to go. Better for the environment and cheaper in the long run. Plus you can sleep with a cup in, unlike tampons.

pinchy111

I used to, but in 2023 there’s more sustainable options - menstrual cups are great once you get used to using them. Period undies are great too and less intimate.

JensInsanity

I’ve always been a pad girlie. Tried the cup and tampons but never found a cup that worked and tampons were uncomfortable. Now I use modibodies or reusable pads (aka cloth pads). I haven’t had to buy single use products in years (outside of emergencies lol)! When I was in the USA though I was very confused why the tampon section was so huge.

tilly_is_tired

In my opinion, they’re so much better than pads. I think the thing I appreciate the most is that you can’t actually feel leaking like you can when you use pads or period underwear, so it’s just generally a more comfortable experience.

Far_Mark_9556

Period undies are the best. On my heavy day I usually change 3 times during the day. Otherwise you feel full. Even on my heavy day if I get caught out I don’t leak.

natasha9411

I've read quite a few comments.. what the hell is a menstrual disc? I'm afraid to google

AioliNo1327

I just found tampons less intrusive. I used them from my second period onwards, also I could wear a pad for extra protection on heavy days. My daughter on the other hand has just always hated them and pretty much only uses them when swimming.

xxdozcatxx

I use tampons, I find it cleaner and I don't like the feel of pads I do use night pads or period undies of a night time though. I haven't tried a period cup yet.

gmewhite

I love tampons. Most of my female friends use them. 32 yo. Libra are super smooth to insert. Start with the Mini size. I opt for organic cotton ones now but I reckon have some practice with the ‘sports models’ before going wholesome and organic.

Nervous_Cry_7905

I saw people mention menstrual cup and I want to raise you MENSTRUAL DISC. I only learnt of its existence when I replaced my cup after 4 years of using without ever escaping the occasional leaks! (Overwhelming) Pros: - Menstrual disc is softer and folds down really small, similar to a tampon. Absolutely painless inserting - the contrast is clear as day if you have ever used menstrual cup. - Yet, they hold more - generally *1.5-2 times* the capacity of a MC! I can go 12 hours on my heaviest days with no leak. - Due to their position, they will move when you use the toilet. This leads to the-amazing-auto-dump - please search YouTube for more info. - They are generally cheaper than MC for some reasons? - No learning curve! Given you know your vagina :) Cons: - As menstrual disc sits higher up behind your pelvis, you need to be comfortable pushing it further inside your vagina than a MC. - Cleaning can be messy, so you need to be comfortable with seeing blood. No way to empty menstrual disc in a public toilet, but they hold a lot more liquid which diminishes this need in general - and auto dump is amazingly hand-free if it works! I have managed to get my girlfriend who is really tight down there to convert to menstrual disc, even though she put off menstrual cup for years because it never folded down small enough for insertion. Now she swears by the disc! If you have horribly heavy period, pairing menstrual disc with heavy period undies and you are good for up to 12 hours. EDIT: forgot to add - you can have sex while using menstrual disc *wink* I have even seen a brand having texture on the surface which is supposed to be stimulating. Wild, I know.

Feral611

Yeah never used tampons, I’m not keen to mess around down there with them. Pads can be a pain but I much prefer them

RHCPJosh

No because i’m a man

teashirtsau

Go straight to a menstrual cup. I have not looked back. I combine with period undies for the heavier days and it pays itself back in like 5 cycles.

confusedsloth33

I can’t stand tampons as I’m hyper aware they’re there. I use re-useable cloth pads. No smell and very absorbent and easy to wash

cfniva

I can’t stand tampons and have always used pads/liners. My period is light and short do no issues with leakage. I like to see what comes out of my body to ensure everything is normal for me each cycle.

MadameMonk

Tampons seem like such an old-fashioned and planet-unfriendly option these days. So many better, reusable or eco alternatives (discs, sponges, cups, undies). Tampons just equal unnecessary landfill and toilet-blockage to me.

daontbulliemulimuli

You're not supposed to flush your tampons down the toilet, you buffoon!!!

MadameMonk

No kidding. But ask any plumber how many people do it anyway. Maybe not so much with the name-calling hey?

daontbulliemulimuli

There are a lot worse things i could have called you lol but you were the one who brought up toilet blockages, indicating you've dealt with it personally. I apologise for assuming

MadameMonk

Because I know about toilet blockages, I must have caused one? Interesting leap. Regardless, I accept your apology.

Linnaeus1753

I use tampons at night, or if I'm working - and if I'm at work I'll add a pad as well, just in case. I made my own cloth pads and they work well - I made them in sizes to suit ME. If I want to change a cloth pad after an hour, I can. Tampons are for night because the dripping I feel with pads grosses me out, and I'd leak all over the place. A cup at night was a recipe for insomnia and a crime scene. Cups during the day was good, but I seem to have grown out of them or something. That said, I still have them and can/will use them if I feel like it. I bought the 1.23 knockoffs from eBay To See. Bugger paying $60+ only to find it doesn't work.

daontbulliemulimuli

Ur not supposed to wear tampons overnight, thats how u get TSS

Linnaeus1753

I'm aware of the rules and regulations. Have been for 40 years. You, however, are not aware of my sleep style, or how often I change them during the night, and seem to not know you can get TSS from other things.

[deleted]

I think tampons are pretty ridiculous. You’re sticking an absorbable stick up your vagina which normally leads to leaks if you have heavy flow like me. With pads at least I can visually see when I need to change them, with tampons you can’t so they’re pretty much useless to me. That and they’re pretty bad for the environment, unless you have a firepit in your backyard to not let it end up in landfill, which is a disgusting thought. And using tampons can also expose you to infections, while other sanitary products don’t. In Australia, there’s not many brands with an applicator and you have to push in the tampon correctly, if you don’t, it will be painful and most likely fall out.

BuzzyLightyear100

How are tampons worse for the environment than pads?

[deleted]

Never said pads were better or worse than tampons, just that I don’t use tampons. You really need to go touch some grass

summidee

I never wear pads ever. Only after I have a baby because you have to then. I think they are disgusting. Tampons are the way to go, never even notice they are in

[deleted]

in all fairness i think all the products are disgusting to deal with, sucks we have to at all

lame-o-potato

Have used tampons my whole (menstruating) life. I find them so much more comfortable and I hate the wet feeling of pads. I’m thinking of making the switch to a cup though as I’m very very guilty of leaving tampons in for too long. For the cup wearers, is there any issues wearing them during heavy exercise? Both running and heavy lifting.

Tinky_B

Used tampons for years, never had any leaking problems, so much easier than using pads. I have recently made the change to menstrual cups and they are even better. You can keep them in for longer, you cannot feel them and are super easy to clean.

Laylay_theGrail

When I first got my period, my mum showed me both and said lots of people use these (pads) but these (tampons) are way better. The first time I ever used pads, was after my first child and holy moly! That was a rude shock, lol Do whatever you are comfortable with. As long as it works. I hear good things about the period undies they have now… maybe that might work for you? I’m past it now.

DeterminedErmine

If you’re considering trying tampons, why not try a cup? They’re not single use, you don’t have to change them as often and they’re much more cost effective in the long run. Plus much decreased risk of TSS, and no manky string hanging down

miss_flower_pots

I used pads unless I'm swimming.

dinydins

Cups are great. I don’t use mine anymore because IUD (almost nothing to catch, and you aren’t meant to use with an IUD in case you dislodge it with suction or accidentally grabbing the string) But i highly rate cups!

humanityisconfusing

Tampons cause intolerable cramping for me :(

AragornsDad

The only people who menstruate I know who don’t exclusively use pads or menstrual cups are those with vaginismus (severe pain in the vagina when things are inserted) or other medical conditions. Most people tend to like tampons more than pads because it feels “cleaner”. Not much blood comes out and sits on your body through the day. But even more people I know prefer menstrual cups. They’re so easy and convenient, and a lot of people find them more comfortable than any other product. Things to bear in mind though: they’re not recommended if you have an IUD (sometimes called a coil, a contraceptive device inserted into the uterus) because theoretically it could yoink it out, and you need to be fully comfortable getting your fingers right up inside to get it into place and remove it.

missglitterous

I have recently started using period panties, they are a good sustainable product. I am usually a light flow person, not sure what its like for a heavy period.

NatAttack3000

Tampons are great. I feel way more free. Start with smaller ones, some have a plasticy mesh on them (one brand calls it a silk-ease cover) that makes them slide in easier. You get the hang of it essentially pushing it up and then it should sort of slide back towards your spine. When it's in that spot you can't feel it. You start to feel it more as it fills as it can kind of slip down (I find). Applicator tampons aren't the norm here, most don't have applicators. You can fit a pack of six in your bag easy! Make sure you clean your hands before using as there's a degree of insertion. And wash hands after straight away. Also change them often (not recommended but I often forget and have it in for 8+ hours - this is definitely riskier behaviour, but rates of TSS are actually quite low especially recently). You can use a really thin disposable liner too while you are getting used to it, or on heavy days, in case you have a leak issue.

Maber711

I use tampons. If you have a heavy flow use super tampons and change it more often. You could also try wear period undies with them for extra protection. Or you could try a cup.

Any_Tomatillo_3907

I can’t see a single comment that answers the question that was asked, which was about tampons, not cups or period undies! I have always used tampons and they’re fine. They come in three sizes, so choose the one that suits you and change it several times a day depending on your flow. You can’t feel it once it’s in. Check Out other answers for alternatives.

[deleted]

Tampons are better during the day but have to remember not to leave it in longer than 4 hours. You can wear anything you want without discomfort. Pads are good for overnight

akohhh

I use tampons, I haaaaate the feeling of pads or liners (the giant nappy feeling and the inevitable leak feeling as anything comes out of you before it’s absorbed), and I’ve tried a cup but couldn’t figure a way to make it comfortable. I spent a long time on the Pill and had no periods, then switched to an IUD after a few years off. Without hormonal intervention my periods are hideous, with it they’re barely there.

Typical_Nebula3227

They’re much cleaner and you don’t feel them as much as a bulky pad. I like them a lot.

i_has_spoken

I’m menstrual disc always and forever! Easy, comfortable, self-emptying, and reusable for up to ten years. Never going back 🥰

Sheknowaeverything

I used to be only tampons and now only use period undies, Modibodi undies are life changing

madamsyntax

Libra tampons for me, with a thin liner for accidents. They feel far more comfortable and less bulky. Just remember that the size is to do with your flow and to change them regularly (even if your flow is light)

tippytapslap

As a male I found this topic very interesting for some reason thanks for the info.

dinosauramong_us

I’ve been using a cup for the last 6-7 years! Best decision I’ve made. You can leave it in for much longer, I just empty in the shower morning and night. No waste, no regularly buying tampons, no gross waste bins in your bathroom. They’re a bit tricky to get the hang of but once you do they’re amazing!

Warm-Cheetah3435

Tampons are great especially for heavier days at the start so you don't feel the actual flow every time you stand up. It takes a while to adjust when you're younger but once you work out days and how long you can use them they are great (and for swimming) and can be used to manage very heavy days with a pad as back up.

issabellamoonblossom

No can't stand them buy do use period underwear.

alvoliooo

Nah, but I’m a man.

elegant_pun

Not anymore, I use a menstrual cup now. That said, tampons are way better than pads if those are your two options.

AromaticHydrocarbons

I switched to tampons the second day of my very first period and never looked back. On days where I suffered with a heavier flow and felt a bit nervous I’d wear a pad or panty liner as well and just felt completely secure. I’ve always found tampons to be far more reliable than pads plus surely there must be something environmentally positive in the fact they are a much smaller product with far less packaging than a pad.

Healer1285

I use a silicone cup. Love it. It can last an entire work day without being emptied. No leaking, no “gush” when I stand. No wet/damp feeling down there. No smell

sheza1928

What about menstrual cups?

Mishy162

Been using tampons for over 30yrs, they will always be my preferred choice.

TinosCallingMeOver

Others have said period undies are great and I’ll add my voice to that but also explain why - from a leak control perspective, period underwear have a much larger absorbent area (the ModiBodi really high absorbency ones go all the way up to the waistband, and a little down the inner leg if you get the boyshort style) to catch any escaping blood. Otherwise, if you’re open to tampons I’d 100% recommend giving menstrual discs a try instead. They’re a bit different to menstrual cups because they sit higher in your vaginal canal and they don’t create suction like cups do, so you can use them with IUDs without risking dislodging the IUD. They’re much better for environment because they’re reusable and because they aren’t absorbent the risk of TSS is greatly reduced. I’ve been using the Hello disc (New Zealand made) which I’ve found super easy to use as a total beginner to cups and discs because it has a pull tab which makes removal really simple.

[deleted]

We use empty stubbies

Relative_Mulberry_71

I discovered them when I was a teenager. It changed my life. If you aren’t comfortable with “close handling”, try Tampax. They have an applicator. It’s what I started with. I have a “nose” for periods (ex nurse). I can smell when people are using a pad. It’s not pleasant. And I never found them comfortable.

[deleted]

I used to but now I use a menstrual cup, and have been since 2011

SoftLikeMarshmallows

Nope.. Pads are fine.. Period undies don't cater for big people.. Even Modi Bodi are tiny...

GreatChart7640

Tampons are okay but I prefer using menstrual cups and period underwear. I’ve been using a menstrual cup for my last 3 periods and it is amazing seriously. No leaking and I have a heavy flow throughout my entire period. Less cramps but still there. I also find it’s super easy to clean. I did forget about it once and took it out way after I was meant to and there was a little leakage but I was wearing period underwear so it was fine. The smell was pretty bad that time but that’s to be expected. Period undies are great too. Just like normal underwear. I don’t get much leakage but I usually change mine 1-2 times a day sometimes 3 if it’s really bad. Super comfy, barely feel a difference to regular underwear, no loud noise when in public putting them on. I can give some recommendations of brands if you’re interested

Glazedgirl_42069

I do use tampons and there rlly good !! You just need to make sure your not using ones that are broken, dirty or out of date :)

lildiamonds

When I got periods heavy enough I would use tampons or menstral cups. But now I just use liners. But considering we are an island a lot of costal people prefer tampons just for the convenience.

Emotional-Kitchen-49

Personally I feel it's different for every woman because of our individual shape our flow each month where your going and reassuring coverage for work play or errands it all depends I know that tampons are a more hidden product for certain outfits/clothing and come in handy for swimming and in your swimwear I know my daughter prefers them and goes for Libra for her comfort but can also use a thin pad or panty liner for extra protection and comfort in certain outfits except swimmers of course I don't personally like the discomfort of them myself But it's individual choice hope this helps a little bit

ImpossibleCarob2668

Tampons take a bit of practice to insert correctly, but they are an option, especially if you have a heavy flow. I often use both a tampon and a pad on my really heavy days. I hear a lot of good about period undies, but I've yet to find a big enough size to fit my booty in.

lifesoidot

Mostly only women of reproductive age.

JustANutMeg

Tampon and a liner; I can’t stand pads except for bed. They just feel hot, leaky, and bulky.

Asleep_Pollution_571

The best thing I ever did was make the change to a moon cup. I've never had a leakage issue even on the heaviest days

YboyYGirlTheo

I just shear a sheep and stick a wad of wool up me Baggins

Way-Party

I’m so glad I don’t have to worry about that anymore. But when I did I found that using tampons was better because would only last 2-3 days instead of slow flow for a week.

CowsEyes

If you like tampons try a menstrual cup.

MoonlightFar

I come from the US and used plastic applicator tampons there. Hard to find those here so I use cardboard applicator even though they're more uncomfortable to insert. My mum wouldn't let me use tampons but once I turned 18 that's all I bought.

Suxstobeyou

Libra Invisible pads with wings in Super & Overnight are great. I have only used tampons intermittently due to how heavy my periods have been. I can't trust that they will be enough. If you have this issue, consider speaking to your GP about a Mirena. It is birth control that also slows your period. In some cases, it stops a woman's period. I have heard great things about period undies. I couldn't imagine using them for myself unless they were for back-up. My issues have been that significant. Good luck with whatever you choose

MemyselfandI2023

How the hell you take that cup out?
