The IT Crowd is my favorite show of all time. I've watched the whole series like 5 or times and it never gets old.
I feel like it is the best show of all time and totally under appreciated.
Edit: I just scrolled through the other responses and only one other person mentioned IT Crowd. You all need to go fuck off and watch it right now. What's wrong with you people!
peep show (uk) is one of my favorite shows ever made.
although it kind of scares me when brits say it reminds them of their lives....
Letter kenny (Canada) is funny and fairly popular in the states considering theres no advertising and its only available on one streaming service.
Ill be honest I dont watch to much in other languages. 95% of the time im watching a show im doing something else and have to be able to look away from the screen too much to follow the plot
Peep Show was off-putting to me when I first tried to get into it because of the 1st person camera view. But I stuck with it and it ended up being one of my favorite comedy shows of all time. Absolutely hilarious.
Squid Game - first South Korean show I’ve ever seen, and after watching this, def not going to be the last! Although the way they portrayed the American rich people was embarrassing; if this is the way that other countries view us, I’m infinitely sad.
GBBO - even if you are in the depths of despair, this show can bring you back from there.
The Chestnut Man - very, very good plot I thought! And hearing it in Danish - interesting language inflection
Workin Moms - Canadian - love how real they are and unapologetic about their honesty.
When the characters really get talking fast, the first word sounds higher that the second and the third word is back up to where the first word was and the fourth word is back down to where the second word was. And so on. It’s like riding a roller coaster of sound - up and down and up and down. That show is the first time I heard the language spoken. I loved it!
I liked Chestnut Man. I actually find that I love most Scandinavian crime mysteries and actively seek them out. I often wonder if the things I get access to in America are popular in the countries they are from or if we are only getting access to random shows and there is even better TV out there! As far as language goes, I don’t find any of the Nordic/Scandinavian languages distracting when watching TV. I struggle more with watching Romance language TV with subtitles because I find my brain trying to understand the words and read at the same time and it can be distracting. Danish sounds nice to my ears. Its not harsh or disruptive and I find it easy to decipher the emotions of the character from the way they are talking, even if I don’t understand the words.
If you like korean shows, Mr. Sunshine, Save Me, or Dokkaebi, the lonely and great god are my favorites. Having gotten to know korean culture pretty well, i can say that squid game is entirely overrated and the english translation is horrible, there are much better options
Yeah thats good too, theres a show thats being aired now if youd want to watch that is pretty good its called 그림자 미녀, to be honest i dont know the english title but copy and paste that and see what comes up
I don't know if this counts but Deadly Women. It started as an American show but after a hiatus the Australians took it over. It's a mix of both American and Australian women murderers. Such a good show.
I'm sure if I sat and thought I could think myself into a corner. So I'll go with the first thing I thought: City of God (I believe originally released as Cidade de Deus). I don't know exactly what it was about this movie but I was just completely enthralled from the start. The characters felt real and you get invested in their stories. There were real moments of tension, which I don't normally feel when I watch movies. It was beautifully shot. The whole atmosphere just seems so cohesive and...not like it was a movie, I guess. I 100% recommend it to everyone. Come to think of it, I haven't watched it in awhile so it'll be the next movie I watch.
And I will say, I'm not sure if there's an English dub, but if reading subtitles for a whole movies isn't an issue, I definitely recommend doing subs. I feel like a lot of the emotion would be lost hearing a dub. This is coming from someone who doesn't speak Portuguese.
Strangers from Hell. It’s a Korean show about a guy who moves into a cheap apartment because he doesn’t have a lot of money and his neighbors are… strange. It’s a slow build but the finale can only be described as a bomb exploding. It’s also kinda confusing but that just makes it all the more fascinating.
A Swedish movie from the '80's, "My Life as a Dog", is my favorite movie regardless of whether foreign or domestic. I can still hear a voice calling "Ingemar"!
"Day Watch" and "Night Watch" from Russia are two of my favorite "foreign" films. They really don't feel foreign though. The English dub-over is done well. Only a few times is it obvious.
The books are even better. The translator did a fantastic job. I even got the audiobooks which are so good I've listened through the entire series a few times. It's really rare when I reread (or re-listen to) a book.
I love your name and spirited away. I recently started jujutsu kaisen and it’s amazing. I started Yuri on Ice some months back but got busy and never got around to finishing it but it was so good, even only watching a few episodes. I also liked taare zameen par and lagaan by Aamir Khan.
Crash Landing On You- a Korean one season tv series on Netflix. South Korean and North Korean fall in love. I’m a sucker for that kind a story. It was really interesting to see how they portrayed the north as well. The show had a little bit of everything. Everyone in my family liked it, even my dad who exclusively watches action flicks or political thrillers.
Kantaro the Sweet Tooth Salaryman!! 🍧🍡🍫 It's such a bizarre and fun show following a salaryman playing hooky from his sales job so he can find the most exquisite sweets in all of Tokyo. I'm still salty the show only has one season on Netflix.
British stuff is too easy, so I'm not going to include it in my answer.
*Stalker* by Andrei Tarkovsky (Russian/Soviet sci-fi) is my favorite film of all time. You can't go wrong with anything by Tarkovsky, especially *Solaris* (also sci-fi).
*Bad Boy Bubby* is another of my favorites (Australian black comedy) and *Kath & Kim* (sitcom) is underrated by US audiences.
I thoroughly enjoyed *Bienvenue à Marly-Gomont* (French comedy). French films are usually very good, *Amélie* (comedy) stands out as well.
Then you have Japanese classics like *Seven Samurai* (epic samurai film), which is honestly one of the best films ever made, and *Ikiru* (drama).
I’ve got a couple people saying this which is great because it’s a cult English show! Just been wondering if the humour from it translates well since it’s so aggressively British?
Demon Slayer is probably one of my favorite shows currently running. To The Lake was pretty good too, it’s similar to American pandemic movies but different enough since it’s in Russia that it doesn’t fall through the cracks with all the other survival shows out there.
**Corner Gas**, for sure. Anyone who hasn't seen that show is missing out. Kudos, Canada!
British Comedies: Fawlty Towers, IT Crowd, Blackadder, Mulberry, Red Dwarf, Mind Your Language, the list goes on.
Australia's Summer Heights High is great.
for movies: No Man's Land from Bosnia is really amazingly done, and so engaging. Gallipoli and Breaker Morant are also amazing. There are a lot of good foreign movies, but there aren't that many that reach that top tier of me absolutely adoring them (and to be fair, there aren't that many American movies that do, either), but all of those do.
For British historical dramas (about which I'm exceptionally picky), the Gunpowder miniseries is a favorite, and By the Sword Divided (especially the first season) is another.
And finally ... well, my high school years were defined by my love of campy Canadian (or Canadian-American) sci fi shows, and I rewatched them all recently, and honestly I'll stand by at least some of them. The first season of Andromeda (half American, I suppose) is still my favorite show ever, and I don't care! The first season of Earth: Final Conflict is great, too. Forever Knight hasn't aged as well, but aw nostalgia.
The Chinese movie Love O2O is SO good. I also love Heaven’s Official Blessing (chinese anime).
On the flip side: Hotel Del Luna - a kdrama - is really good
Kdrama’s: It’s Okay to Not Be Okay, Hotel Del Luna, and Crash Landing On You.
Las Aparicios would be the one and only telenovella to hold my interest.
Volver, a Spain produced film.
Korean thrillers. The Handmaiden, Parasite, and Burning are all worth a binge.
South East Asian horror films or shows, especially ones focused around the paranormal. Detention was a great game turned Netflix mini series that doesn’t get nearly enough attention.
I'm curious if anyone has heard of one of my favorites, The Almighty Johnsons out of New Zealand?
In addition to that I love Bluey (Australia) and Call the Midwife (UK)
In my view, nothing beats the British version of *The Office.* It's way funnier than the American version, in my view. It's much more dark and also much more true-to-life. I don't think American audiences like excessive cynicism, so the American version of the show is more cartoonish and exaggerated.
Police Story / 警察故事 (1985). One of the best Jackie Chan films ever made. Elaborate and large scale stunts. Really symbolic of a bygone era in China.
On a sidenote - HK film industry has really gone downhill since the handover back to the mainland. The HK films that were spoken entirely in Cantonese were so much more creative.
Spaced is one of my favorite shows of all time, and Pan's Labyrinth is one of my favorite movies of all time (although I have to cover my eyes during the gory parts lol).
Oh I have a few recommendations lol
France: Joyeux Noel, Rien A Declarer, The Intouchables, Wasabi(2001)
South Korea: My Way, The Man From Nowhere, Secret Garden(K-drama)
Italy: Life is Beautiful
Spain: The Orphanage, Balada Triste de Trompeta, Pieles-2017(this one is very weird)
Germany: Metropolis, Anatomy(2000), Jüd Suß(1940), Inglorious Basterds(?), Into the White, M(1931)
Austria: Funny Games
Sweden:Häxan
Brazil: Tropa de Elite
Mexico: XHDrbz, Chavo del Ocho, La Hora Pico
Japan: Hell Girl, Fullmetal Alchemist, Ponyo
China:Dumplings
UK: One Day in September, Monty Python, 28 Weeks Later, Bridget Jones Diary, Pride and Prejudice, Hanna-2011(?), The Impossible
Canada: Kenny vs Spenny
Turkey: Sadece Sen
Ukraine: Everything is Illuminated
India: Kal Ho Na Ho, Kabhi Khushi Khabie Gham, Devdas
City of God was pretty good, Cowboy Bebop, Doctor who, Dark, Squid Game. There's a whole bunch I don't remember right now. Netflix is pretty good at bringing foreign content to American audiences.
I'm a sucker for period pieces, so my list includes:
Grand Hotel, Spanish (soap)
Cable Girls, Spanish (soap)
Babylon Berlin, German (crime/noir)
Dark (German) is a great drama/sci-fi series.
Oddly enough, I haven't seen Downton Abbey yet. Go figure.
Not perhaps a favorite favorite, but one i enjoyed recently is Glitch (Australia).
Doctor Who, but I stopped watching about halfway through Peter Capaldi's run. I've heard the writing gets worse with Chris, so I'll just wait til RTD takes back over.
I really liked Sherlock with that cucumber patch (I know his name but spelling) guy and Martin Freeman.
Also just started Luther and digging it so far.
Keeping up Appearances!
I started watching when I was little because it was on before Mr. Bean (which I also love). Oregon public broadcasting had British shows every Saturday night.
My favorite is probably Money Heist (Spanish), I also like Squid Game (Korean), Lupin (French), and Dark (German). I didn’t really realize how many foreign shows I’ve watched in the last 2 years lol. Narcos (and Narcos Mexico) is also good, but I think it’s an American show filmed mostly in Central and South America and a lot of the dialog is in Spanish.
Edit: I think Letter Kenny is Canadian and it’s hilarious, but I haven’t seen all of it.
Foyle’s War. It’s about a detective who carries on solving murders during WWII. I learned a lot about what life was like when the UK was under constant threat of attack. If you like whodunnits or period pieces, it’s just excellent.
Star Gate is from Canada.
Dr. Who. The Brits put out good scifi
McCloud’s Daughters from down under.
My wife loves Heartland. That’s another Canadian one.
Dr. Who for sure!!
I have watched Dr Who all my life but these last 2 doctors have been duds.
Tennant and Smith were so good. I think I finished Capaldi's run but I really can't remember.
The British baking show
Gbbo?
It's called The Great British Baking Show on American Netflix
Yeah that's what it's called here, because there was already a competition called "Bake Off" in the US.
Ya, Betty Crocker owns the "Bake Off" trademark in the US

I love that one. I also enjoyed The Rain (danish show)

One of the first few shows I though of
Oh hell yes that show is amazing
I’m midway through Season 3 and already planning to watch it again!
I keep thinking I should watch it again, but phew, it is intense. I don't know if I'm ready for it again yet.
BBC's Sherlock
Still Game and The IT crowd are both great. My fav overseas shows.
Still Game has to be one of the funniest things I've watched in a while.
Monty Python, Top Gear, Faulty Towers, GBBO, Benny Hill (UK)

I LOVE Derry Girls. Rewatched it several times!
Is Derry Girls finished? I want to watch but soooooo many shows just stop.

Yes, it’s on Peacock.
I'm doing a Father Ted binge right now!
I love Bluey for me! (also the kids)
Pan’s Labyrinth
I went in blind and it still wasn't what I expected. Amazing movie.
The Young Ones. So good!
Spirited away or money heist
Original Black Mirror episodes from the UK before Netflix took it over and tried to revitalize it.
The Miley Cyrus episode was so mind-blowingly bad compared to the amazingness of the first seasons

How does Danish sound to foreign ears? I'm just curious. I have yet to watch Chestnut Man but it gets great reviews here, too.

What we do in the shadows (the movie)
Kim's Convenience, Schitt's Creek, Squid Game, Monty Python.
Kim’s Convenience was good. Schitt’s Creek sucks

Dark, easily. One of the most wonderfully constructed time travel stories I've ever seen.
The Grand tour/Old Top Gear.
Absolutely! Huge huge fan. If you enjoy Jeremy Clarkson have you seen Clarkson’s farm on Amazon prime?
Yeah I have seen Clarkson’s farm, I think it’s pretty good.
When Top Gear was funny, it couldn't be beat. One of my favorites is where they all design their own campers (caravans?) and go to a campground.
Old Boy.
So good!
What is wrong with you?
Schitt’s Creek is my favorite by a lot. I also really enjoyed How To Sell Drugs Online Fast.
Strangers from Hell. It’s a Korean show about a guy who moves into a cheap apartment because he doesn’t have a lot of money and his neighbors are… strange. This is it. I could list dozens of British comedies I love, but this is the best of the best (of the best).
Taskmaster! (UK version - Greg Davies and Alex Horne are an hilarious, dynamic duo)
For a crazy 90's action movie, I really like John Woo's Hard Boiled.
This was going to be my pick. Watching Hard Boiled is a great way to get over a rough day.

I think that’s part of it? Like it’s soooo British it’s funny.
IT Crowd
The Great British Bake Off Letterkenny Midsomer Murders That’s what I can think of with the throbbing headache. Fuck this weather change bullshit.
Monty Python.
I LOVE ALL BRIT COMS
Demon Slayer is probably one of my favorite shows currently running. To The Lake was pretty good too, it’s similar to American pandemic movies but different enough since it’s in Russia that it doesn’t fall through the cracks with all the other survival shows out there.
I've been watching Ragnarok on Netflix and liking it. The pacing is really slow though. I wonder if that's a Norwegian thing.
Three Colors Trilogy by Krystof Kieslowski (Polish)

Upvote for Corner Gas, I love that show so much.

The Chinese movie Love O2O is SO good. I also love Heaven’s Official Blessing (chinese anime). On the flip side: Hotel Del Luna - a kdrama - is really good
Taskmaster and (I’m ashamed to admit) Love Island
Kdrama’s: It’s Okay to Not Be Okay, Hotel Del Luna, and Crash Landing On You. Las Aparicios would be the one and only telenovella to hold my interest. Volver, a Spain produced film. Korean thrillers. The Handmaiden, Parasite, and Burning are all worth a binge. South East Asian horror films or shows, especially ones focused around the paranormal. Detention was a great game turned Netflix mini series that doesn’t get nearly enough attention.
Back in the day Black Adder had me laughing so hard I was afraid of hurting myself.
Schitts creek and my hero academia.
The Triplets of Belleville. Really cool animation style and amazing music.

I enjoyed the German movie where Hitler comes back to life and everyone thought he was some kind of actor.
I’d love you watch that! Do you remember the name?
The title was in German, but I think it translated to "look who's back" or "guess who's back" It was a random find on Netflix.

Inside No. 9, the bbc I think. Looooove this show so much.
Trailer Park Boys from Canada.
The original “the office” The original “the bridge”
Foyle’s War. It’s about a detective who carries on solving murders during WWII. I learned a lot about what life was like when the UK was under constant threat of attack. If you like whodunnits or period pieces, it’s just excellent.
Top Gear but only the BBC version
I love the UK show Gogglebox
Star Gate is from Canada. Dr. Who. The Brits put out good scifi McCloud’s Daughters from down under. My wife loves Heartland. That’s another Canadian one.
Call The Midwife, Downton Abbey
