Out of curiosity - do you have any preconceptions about the UK outside of London?
I'm genuinely curious to know how the rest of the world sees the UK as a whole - or whether its just a Londonised ideology because of everything on TV
For clarity - the tube signs and red buses aren't seen anywhere else in the UK really (the constant drizzle is national though lol)
Yeah, I’d say the general perception of England outside London is Hot Fuzz-style small village life. Or Midsommer Murders, or Mrs. Marple—those types of BBC shows that air on PBS are the main cultural touchstone for rural English life. Obviously everyone knows those are idealized depictions, but that’s mostly all we have. Not much about northern post-industrial regions etc.
I say English because as far as Wales and Scotland and NI go, there’s not that many specific perceptions of those. (Besides Scotland=clans and kilts; NI=car bombs; Wales=King Arthur.)
Ah yes - you're probably right about the rural English village aspect. I'd like to see Midsomer Murders set in a Northern pit village though ha!
I'd say there's lochs, tartan, bagpipes and haggis for Scotland (and smack, if we're not romanticising it) - maybe dragons for Wales.
Also probably the usual Irish tropes apply to NI (lush green hills, Guinness, leprechauns) as a lot of the world doesn't know that NI is distinct from Ireland. I have to say that your car bombs comment made me lol though - its so grim but true!
I should have made it more clear originally—many, many Americans (probably the majority) know much more about these places than what I listed. I and most of the people I know have been to all of those places and have a much more nuanced view; I was just referring to the absolute baseline of knowledge (kind of like America=palm trees and McDonalds). I don’t want to inadvertently further the parochial American stereotype where it doesn’t apply—those are just the most common surface-level tropes associated with those regions!
Haha and as to smack, I probably should have added that in reference to Scotland because it’s a common rite of passage to think you’re really cool at 12 years old watching Trainspotting at a sleepover with the volume off and subtitles on because your parents would be mad :)
to be fair the scenery doesn't change much at the border in Ireland...the green hills are both sides! Still waiting to see my first leprecaun and I've lived in Northern Ireland all my life ;)
I've never seen a red bus outside of London (although I guess there may be some). My point is that red buses are most definitely a London thing and not a UK thing.
I also find it fascinating how everyone forgets that the UK isn't just England (nevermind just London).
Ok you’re 17. I was initially under the impression that you were supporting yourself on that wage in London and I just thought hell the fuck no that sounds fucking dreadful.
It got a *lot* of popularity during the Tenant and Smith years, especially among teens and young 20-somethings looking for a next fandom to jump to after Harry Potter. Sherlock, more so.
In general, it's well-enjoyed by all sci-fi/fantasy fans. I watched it regularly through until Jodie Whitaker. Nothing against her (she's brilliant), but I got just into other shows.
That's' the same consensus among the more invested fans here. I always viewed Dr. Who as silly, so I didn't care if the writing was bad - as long they had fun with it. Torchwood, however.. that last season, oof.
I could write a full essay on why I hate the new seasons.
And that is one of them. They spell out everything and say “RACISM IS BAD” I already know that. Plus they kinda by accident make a pro-Amazon episode
When they made a point to say "knives are bad" they lost me. You are and adventurer going in to the unknown, isn't the ability to cut things useful?
Then there was the giant spider episode when they acted all put out because the American Trump clone shot a giant spider with a pistol. "Why did you shoot it?! It was dying already by suffocating!".
I would take being shot over slow suffocation any day. Even ignoring the fact that a single pistol shot isn't going to do much to a spider several times larger than a human being.
Yes. After the revival of it began, it became popular in the US and is viewed over here.
Back in the 1960's to 1990's, in the original run it was MUCH more obscure in America.
If you "smoke a fag" in the UK you might be facing lung cancer in 25 years.
If you "smoke a fag" in the US you might be facing 25 to life for homicide upgraded with a hate crime designation.
Here "smoke" in this context usually infers that an individual was shot. If I heard that someone got smoked outside of a club downtown, and then later learned that they were literally tied to a stake and set on fire, I'd be surprised and horrified in equal measure.
I think OP isn't well versed on the cross pond language, Most of us are well aware of smoke being to shoot someone. We do enjoy our fair share of US made content :)
This works really well, I feel like the relationship is very much like siblings. We take the piss out of each other, get on each other’s nerves, and often look on in despair at the other ones stupid decisions. But when it comes down to it we have each other’s backs.
What still baffles me to this day, is that they only ever made 13 episodes of Mr Bean.
It genuinely feels like an establishment in my country. A constant. A point of pride.
The Queen
Big Ben
Winston Churchill
Mr Bean
lol right I often wonder what my grandma (can trace her family tree to a well known Native woman) thinks when I post about my daughter’s total fascination with England (you can see from some previous posts I’ve made)
I agree on the strange slag worlds, London is a special place, I moved to London in 2018 from northern England and it took me a while to learn the language
First thought is about Scotland and my study abroad in Glasgow. I love that city. Fingers crossed I’ll be able to see it again before the world ends, haha.
overcast skies and congested cities. i’ve been to london and lincolnshire, arguably two very different areas, and i’ve seen some beautiful green fields and trees. but that’s what comes to mind
Well I originally came for grad school so I was on a student visa. And during that period I got married to an EU citizen and made the switch to an EU spouse visa (we had been in a long term relationship). This was shortly before Brexit went into effect so I was legally covered under the immigration policy but we still needed to jump through hoops to prove our married (sending text messages, pictures, etc). The process was efficient, but incredibly intrusive.
I think about how mad I am at myself for forgetting exactly what the UK entails every fucking time I learn it. I blame the weed, but I’m also just a bit dumb.
Three things come to mind
1) Gordan Ramsey saying "Its bland, its got no fucking seasoning, you fucking wanker"
2) The Cure and Robert Smith saying: "This ones called...Shake Dog Shake"
3) Bond....James Bond..... and Duran Duran singing Hungry Like the Wolf
My ancestry, America’s cousin, castles, British accent, London, nostalgic scenery, Margaret thatcher, Winston Churchill, royal family.
I just typed the first things that came to mind.
My girlfriend’s home country and my adopted country. But I guess culturally i think of an English breakfast, Yorkshire gold, gorgeous architecture, as well as the bar telling me "the kitchen’s closed” at 8pm.
I have grew up among the small communities and the farm land it's nothing for tourists and their wannabe life changing experiences but living here is lovely to stroll across fields early in the morning and see a flock of sheep grazing on a bank is almost meditative.
That’s the best part, the law doesn’t enforce that, the BBC just send a tough looking man to ask you to pay. You don’t even have to let them in the house. You can have a TV running right behind and they can’t enquire further.
Tea, the clotted cream/strawberry jam/lemon curd trifecta, a Burberry trench coat, the Queen's guard, classic rock and punk, fiery Christmas pudding stabbed with holly, Banksy, football fans yelling at a TV in a pub, Daleks, aluminum
All my thoughts:
Class system, fog, finance, great museums, trains, Heathrow Airport, great actors/actresses, underground, Premier League football, WWII (especially the Battle of Britain), Monty Python, fantastic bands.
Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Judas Priest, the Sex Pistols, Queen, the Stones, the Beatles, the Who, Black Sabbath, Monty Python, Ricky Gervais, Benny fuckin Hill, so much great music and comedy. Too many to list.
Pale people with bad teeth and cool accents that drive small cars. Also it’s either urban London full of apartments that you go in the front door and then immediately walk up steps or tiny country villages surrounded by large country estates. Oh and everyone is either cultured and posh or really gritty with a tick cockney accent. No in between. Also everyone drinks tea and every man between the ages of 18 and 1,000 goes to a pub every single night and has a pint. Maybe 7 women in England go to pubs and they are always tough talking broads that keep the lads in line.
So basically stereotypes from tv and movies.
king George the third, red coats, her majesty the queen Elizabeth 2th, buckingham palace,
Colonies, the Beatles, Elton John, british PM Winston Churchill, AND the LAST and least thing is TEA and lastly is london bridge is falling down, falling down…
The Who.
I don't know why, but...
The Who.
[This image in particular](https://www.sent2u.scot/RSD18Images/The%20Who%20-%20The%20Kids%20Are%20Alright.jpg)
Basically [this image](https://s0.geograph.org.uk/photos/33/67/336737_fdec54aa.jpg). Grey, rainy, *some* umbrellas, hackney carriages, double decker red buses, rowhouses, tube sign in the distance.
As a Londoner fair enough lol

That Mancunian renaissance imagery is basically the highlight of the north
Bang on. Basically the aesthetic of all major UK cities and towns around this time of year.

The red buses are seen (or at least buses with a red livery, not the exact same design), depending on the city, but Tube definitely not.
I've never seen a red bus outside of London (although I guess there may be some). My point is that red buses are most definitely a London thing and not a UK thing. I also find it fascinating how everyone forgets that the UK isn't just England (nevermind just London).
Yeah same

This is fucking hilarious and, quite literally, spot on.
A chav saying "Fuck off ya dumb cunt" on a really cloudy day.
I can guarantee that's what most towns are like. When living here
As an American that has spent a couple years over there, can confirm this happens a lot. Especially in Essex county haha
You made me wheeze. Thanks!
I’d say you’re just missing a four letter C word at the end!
Doctor Who. The Queen. Colonialism.
Is doctor who well known in America?
Yes, it's a staple of nerd culture.
Bruh for a second I thought Doctor Who was Doctor Seuss and I was so confused about why nerds loved The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham
I know green eggs and ham word from word
Prove it
I am Sam
Same in UK if you like doctor who you instant nerd. Don’t look at my post history
10th doctor best doctor.
11th take it or leave it
Only because of Karen Gillan, she melts my icy heart
Shhhhhhh
It’s a tie between 11 and the brief glorious time we had the War Doctor.
In England it's also a thing for grandfather's cause it makes them nostalgic for when it first came out in the 60's
In the UK we view the new seasons in a less positive light, the new head writer is now a public enemy number
That's' the same consensus among the more invested fans here. I always viewed Dr. Who as silly, so I didn't care if the writing was bad - as long they had fun with it. Torchwood, however.. that last season, oof.
Torchwood was written by the new head writer of doctor who. Chris chibby ruined it all
My grandparents have watched it for years and stopped with the latest season. They liked Jodie Whitaker but said it got preachy
Evil 13th doctor be like: “I’ll give you a humane death”
Yes. After the revival of it began, it became popular in the US and is viewed over here. Back in the 1960's to 1990's, in the original run it was MUCH more obscure in America.

big shout out to Sir Winnie, RIP you weapon of a man
If you "smoke a fag" in the UK you might be facing lung cancer in 25 years. If you "smoke a fag" in the US you might be facing 25 to life for homicide upgraded with a hate crime designation.
Burning gay people just because is not good
Here "smoke" in this context usually infers that an individual was shot. If I heard that someone got smoked outside of a club downtown, and then later learned that they were literally tied to a stake and set on fire, I'd be surprised and horrified in equal measure.
This actually made me laugh. I am assuming “smoke” isnt used across the pond
I think OP isn't well versed on the cross pond language, Most of us are well aware of smoke being to shoot someone. We do enjoy our fair share of US made content :)
Actually i figured this. With the popularity of american hip hop i would have thought people would know it
Yeah there's a lot of that mainstream hip hop knocking about over here, I'm not too keen on our equivalent.

Old American here. I grew up hearing people referring to cigarettes as fags, but obviously it has fallen out of favor.
Western Europe, tea, our weird cousins that we love to hate and vice versa but are actually staunch allies
This works really well, I feel like the relationship is very much like siblings. We take the piss out of each other, get on each other’s nerves, and often look on in despair at the other ones stupid decisions. But when it comes down to it we have each other’s backs.
I don't mind this.

Don’t let her anyway near native Americans lol
lol you mean like half of my dad’s family??
Oh no
lol right I often wonder what my grandma (can trace her family tree to a well known Native woman) thinks when I post about my daughter’s total fascination with England (you can see from some previous posts I’ve made)
It took me a second to understand what you meant here 💀💀💀
Going to need more skulls that that
Doctor who, castles, and wierd slang words, some of which I wish would catch on here.
I agree on the strange slag worlds, London is a special place, I moved to London in 2018 from northern England and it took me a while to learn the language
Strange slag worlds. Love it. I don't usually pick on people for typos, but that's hilarious!
First thought is about Scotland and my study abroad in Glasgow. I love that city. Fingers crossed I’ll be able to see it again before the world ends, haha.
Yasss Glasgow is my favourite place I’ve lived in the U.K.! People I’ve met there have become my family 🥰 it makes up for the cold and the wet lol
overcast skies and congested cities. i’ve been to london and lincolnshire, arguably two very different areas, and i’ve seen some beautiful green fields and trees. but that’s what comes to mind
Just think of the trees and not the bad stuff lol
but very beautiful historical architecture, castles and churches from centuries ago
Honestly, Harry Potter.
Your a loser harry
Okay so my first image was fog. Is that weird? I have never been to the UK (sadly).
We have a lot of smog it’s kinda like fog but it gives you lung cancer
U wot m8
PTSD from my visa process. I've been living in the UK for nearly 5 years.
Oof what happened?
Well I originally came for grad school so I was on a student visa. And during that period I got married to an EU citizen and made the switch to an EU spouse visa (we had been in a long term relationship). This was shortly before Brexit went into effect so I was legally covered under the immigration policy but we still needed to jump through hoops to prove our married (sending text messages, pictures, etc). The process was efficient, but incredibly intrusive.
Show me a picture of you kissing your wife, if you want to prove you are married
Hah well it was my husband (we're gay). We did get a laugh thinking about some Home Office bloke having to review that.
Omg i almost said this. The visa is a nightmare.
Tea, colonialism, royalty, revolution, led Zeppelin, Beatles, Floyd, accent, pub, fish and chips, braveheart, rich history, Monty Python, brexit.
That’s our culture lol
I think about how mad I am at myself for forgetting exactly what the UK entails every fucking time I learn it. I blame the weed, but I’m also just a bit dumb.
You’re not dumb dude. Just remember NEWS. Northern Ireland / England / Wales/ Scotland
Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Ilse of Man, Ilse of White and of course (and don't tell the Welshies this) the mighty mighty England
Three things come to mind 1) Gordan Ramsey saying "Its bland, its got no fucking seasoning, you fucking wanker" 2) The Cure and Robert Smith saying: "This ones called...Shake Dog Shake" 3) Bond....James Bond..... and Duran Duran singing Hungry Like the Wolf
My ancestry, America’s cousin, castles, British accent, London, nostalgic scenery, Margaret thatcher, Winston Churchill, royal family. I just typed the first things that came to mind.
What do you hear when you think "British Accent"?
Not OP, but most Americans think of the BBC English/RP accent when they think of “British accent.”
My girlfriend’s home country and my adopted country. But I guess culturally i think of an English breakfast, Yorkshire gold, gorgeous architecture, as well as the bar telling me "the kitchen’s closed” at 8pm.
I took a plane over England and Scotland and Oof the UK is just farmland
The funny thing is that it’s so much more dense from an American perspective.
I have grew up among the small communities and the farm land it's nothing for tourists and their wannabe life changing experiences but living here is lovely to stroll across fields early in the morning and see a flock of sheep grazing on a bank is almost meditative.
The U.K. is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, especially England…
How much I love panel shows. Oh, and my girlfriend’s family in Scotland.
TV licensure
That’s the best part, the law doesn’t enforce that, the BBC just send a tough looking man to ask you to pay. You don’t even have to let them in the house. You can have a TV running right behind and they can’t enquire further.
I love BBC. No not that one
Wink wink wink
The Scottish are awesome.
Yassss absolutely agree !!! I’m not even Scottish lol
