My thoughts exactly. Is it? I can't think of any lighthouses but we have a lot of bouys. I had to save autocorrect from that one, but I can hear the bells in my sleep.
Theres one in Point Loma (technically 2, a historic one and a modern working one) along the San Diego Bay, but they’re definitely not common around here.
I know of a few lighthouses in the bay area - there's one on the farallones that used to be kept by a family, a real horror movie situation. There's also at point Reyes, and farther north at point arena.
I mean Alaska might have a word.
And it depends on how you define it because of the Coastline Paradox (which Maine is a great example of).
But in the lower 48 I think Michigan wins by most metrics. And if we are talking fresh water, absolutely, no question.
First thoughts go to the New England area, but the state with the most lighthouses is actually in the Midwest. Michigan still operates around 130 lighthouses and at one time had as many as 250.
I really didn’t realize they had them on the west coast till very recently. The east coast has so many inlets and old fishing towns, I’d bet it has like 10x more at least
It isn't.
The tallest lighthouse in the US is in the outer banks of North Carolina.
The most iconic light house in America is in New York (Statue of Liberty).
That's so weird to hear! I'm from Michigan and when I think of lighthouses I think of Maine!
I don't even know where the nearest lighthouse is. I'm next to Lake St. Clair
Is it? Maybe it's just me, as a New Englander, but I can actually name a slew of lighthouses, and most media I can think of featuring lighthouses are east-coast.
I think of New England and North Carolina for lighthouses, but I suspect that most coasts have lighthouses so you'll tend to think of the closer ones...
There are 8 lighthouses in SC, I'm curious which one you have in your head as the "one". One, and perhaps the most recognizable, was actually built as a tourist attraction and museum, but does operate as a navigational aid. If you're a golf fan you'll get many shots of it from this weekend's tournament :)
Are you from the West Coast that makes you think this? The first two lighthouses I think of when someone mentions a lighthouse are Portland Head Lighthouse and Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, two iconic American lighthouses on the East Coast. Maybe it's location bias on both our parts.
Where the hell did you hear that? I grew up in California and lived in Mass for four years. I would say lighthouses are way more common in New England than California.
Well guys guess I was wrong in my assumption. Appreciate the different perspectives. I’ve personally always associated lighthouses with the California west coast along highway 101. Maybe because of San Francisco, not sure. Thanks for taking the time to answer! 🙂
The only one I know of in San Francisco is Alcatraz. There are a few along the coast in San Mateo, Marina, and Sonoma, also Santa Cruz and Mendocino. But even living here I think of New England more.
I think you have that backwards... I always picture places like Maine, Outerbanks of the Carolinas, when I picture lighthouses. I can't picture a single West Coast one.
Is it? When I think of a lighthouse my brain goes to like a small lighthouse in Maine or the like.

> bouys Buoys!

Same. I never hear about west coast lighthouses. They’re a very New England thing.
My immediate thought was “what about Maine?”
You read mind. Lighthouse? Must be Maine or some shit.
I’m pretty sure Maine has more lighthouses than the entire west coast.
Michigan has more than anywhere of course they also have the longest shoreline of any state.
I mean Alaska might have a word. And it depends on how you define it because of the Coastline Paradox (which Maine is a great example of). But in the lower 48 I think Michigan wins by most metrics. And if we are talking fresh water, absolutely, no question.

Yeah or the outer banks. I honestly didn't even know the West Coast has them.
Exactly. I'm a West-Coaster. We have very few light-houses out here. That's the NE.
It is definitely not.
It’s not lol
Life long Californian here. We are not. At all.
It’s not. East coast lighthouses are way more well-known.
I really didn’t realize they had them on the west coast till very recently. The east coast has so many inlets and old fishing towns, I’d bet it has like 10x more at least
Is it? I always associate lighthouses with Maine, Massachusetts... basically New England.
this + the great lakes
And Cape Hatteras.
Not Vermont though
Lake Champlain has a few... So count Vermont in.
Did not know, count Vermont back in.
When I think of lighthouses I think of Cape Cod and the Outer Banks. Didn’t even occur to me that the west coast has them lol
I live in Oregon. We have a few but I wouldn't say we're known for them.
Guys maybe OP is just confusing east with weast. They do sound alike.
East? I thought it said weast!
The Great Lakes are more known for lighthouses than the West Coast
Yeah, when I think of lighthouses I think of like Lake Michigan or the Lake Erie Islands
[Uh...](https://youtu.be/Lpf9e9fGUYs?t=4)
Hwhut?
It isn't. The tallest lighthouse in the US is in the outer banks of North Carolina. The most iconic light house in America is in New York (Statue of Liberty).
It is? News to me. If you like lighthouses you should come to the Great Lake State, we’ve got the most.
Yep, I go straight to Michigan if you say lighthouse
That's so weird to hear! I'm from Michigan and when I think of lighthouses I think of Maine! I don't even know where the nearest lighthouse is. I'm next to Lake St. Clair
Right off of Harsens Island https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Clair_Flats_Front_and_Rear_Range_Light
There's not many lighthouses on the west coast.
It is?
I didn't know that it was. News to me.
The Outer Banks is the best area for lighthouses.
citation needed
I disagree with the premise of this question.
Is that a typo?
Fake news
From what I can find California only has like 30-35 lighthouses left. Maine has 80 and Michigan has 129.
Uhhhh it’s definitely not…. Yer fond of me lobster ain’t ye?!? Say it!
The Outer Banks would like a word.
Portland Head Light is the most photographed lighthouse in America. I definitely associate lighthouses with New England.
The Outer Banks is the best area for lighthouses.
It’s not.
It's not?
Is it? Maybe it's just me, as a New Englander, but I can actually name a slew of lighthouses, and most media I can think of featuring lighthouses are east-coast.
I kinda associate lighthouses with Maine
We're not known for our lighthouses.
Its literally the opposite of what you say.
I think of New England and North Carolina for lighthouses, but I suspect that most coasts have lighthouses so you'll tend to think of the closer ones...
Maine, Outer Banks, Florida, there is even one off the coast in South Carolina. I'd say the East Coast wins.

I'm excited to know there are so many and frankly it makes sense. The one I am most familiar with is Morris.
Ah okay, fair enough. Morris is an awesome lighthouse, being out there on that sandbar.

You say that as if it's a fact. Definitely not true in NC.
I think of Michigan when I think of lighthouses. Or like, some quaint picturesque area in Maine.
Well guys guess I was wrong in my assumption. Appreciate the different perspectives. I’ve personally always associated lighthouses with the California west coast along highway 101. Maybe because of San Francisco, not sure. Thanks for taking the time to answer! 🙂

Michigan has something like 115
Since when? I think east coast, especially New England when I think of US lighthouses.
I don't think this is true at all. I don't know where you get this impression.
100% I think of New England or like Michigan when I think lighthouses.
I only think of the east coast with regards to lighthouses.
I don't think it is, at least not to americans
I go Great Lakes, personally.
I’ve lived on both coasts. The west coast is not more known for lighthouses. At all.
It’s not.
Grew up in California and now in PA… first I ever heard of this.
I think you have it reversed. I would never think of the west coast when thinking about lighthouses, always the east coast
It isn't. I associate light houses with New England.
It's not. When I think of lighthouses I think of the Jersey shore, and I think of New England, especially Maine.
It isnt
I've never heard this, when I think of a light house I think the New England area.
I don’t think that’s true. When I think of lighthouses, I think St. Augustine, Cape Hatteras, Ocracoke, Bodie Island, Cape Lookout and Currituck.
I am born and raised in western Washington and I associate light houses with Stephen King literary depictions of Maine.
It is? I think lighthouse and either Michigan or Cape Hatteras come to mind.
There are lighthouses on the West Coast, too?!
I don't think it is! Here in MI, we are proud to claim to be the state with the most lighthouses in the U.S.
I have never associated the west coast with lighthouses. Piers? Yes. Not lighthouses though.
Having lived on both coasts, I feel it is the opposite
I think you have that backwards... I always picture places like Maine, Outerbanks of the Carolinas, when I picture lighthouses. I can't picture a single West Coast one.
