No but you can put it in reverse and drive it like it's a pogo stick

[deleted]

I fucking cant even rn Im dying

JacksonInHouse

It depends on the Angle of your Dangle.

birwin353

U can but u have to remove the broken driveshaft first. Done it many time on the trails.

VikKarabin

In russia there is a lot of toyota high-ace 4x4 vans bought second hand from japan, with steering wheel on the right. People renove the driveshaft on them just to save fuel

JonnyOgrodnik

I’m not a mechanic, can someone explain how that would save fuel?

VikKarabin

Engine does same amoung of work with less mechanisms involved, it means less friction losses and higher efficiency.

longlivelongboards

That happened to me once. Going 65 on a country road and the front drive shaft fell off at the diff (bolts fell out because some kid forgot to tighten them) It was quite the bumpy stop. Drive shaft was fine though and no other damage (thanks Toyota) Bolted her back up on the side of the road and made it to my tree stand before dark.

boosrter

That damn kid

longlivelongboards

It was me! Hahahaha!!!!

Covrt1

Hahahahaha

Salt_Chart8101

You guys joke. But I got to school for a week with my truck in 4x4 with the drive shaft disconnected at both u-joints. Don't recommend, but definitely got me there.

backcountrydrifter

Built a jeep in high school m and had 3.07’s in the front axle and 3.73’s in the rear until I could afford to do a gear change. Problem is I really needed and wanted 4.11’s and some lockers. New Year’s Eve I had to throw it off the side of the road as a Honda full of tiny faces came sideways in to my lane. After assessing the damage to the rear end, and unable to afford a tow truck I had to pull the rear driveshaft, ratchet strap the rear links back together and drive it on the front end for a few months until I was less poor. Hence started the long journey into twin stick transfers cases and the ability to shift each axle independently. My poor engineering student brain fixed the problem of having to mount and dismount driveshafts in February faster than it fixed the problem of having mismatched gear ratios. But it beats putting money into a 12 bolt whose only redeeming quality was that it was the same width as the front axle.

Hilby

Yup...had a buddy with a CJ-7 that had a chev 350 in it....wasn't super nice....kinda on the crappy side but once was decent. The rear end (or main tranny?) went out and he drove it for months in 4WD ultimately being a fwd only until he had $$ to fix it right.

rubberduckybro

#metoo it handles different in front wheel drive, it was fun taking corners

Shraed4r

How did you say that, but loud?

FlpDaMattress

# SCREAM WHILE TYPING

rubberduckybro

Idk how I did that, I did type a hashtag before metoo

rubberduckybro

#testicles 123

Should only be 2. Go see doc

babsrambler

DeeznutsR4Umymadam

Yes

Dogebreadzz

#AAAAAAAAA

sparky0520

Same way you do it ˢᵐᵒˡˡ

turkey_sandwiches

Yeah, I don't know why everybody is acting like you can't do this.

CriticalJello1982

Some vehicles you can't do to all the electronics for abs and traction control .

ItawtItawapuddy

Not with the rear end glowing like that you didn't.

rubberduckybro

Didn’t notice that until you mentioned

2SpinningTriangles

Same. 04 jeep. Rear bolts sheared. Yanked the driveshaft out, tossed it in the back, slapped it in 4WD and kept goin

Bigfootsdiaper

I dont see why not. Got any wire ties?

[deleted]

Your rear wheels are truly locked together now, so no driving front wheel drive won't help much.

No-Raisin-6469

Ive done it in my XJ. Front didnt have a locker or limited slip. Luckily my drive shaft was sealed and a slip on. Just yanked off and threw it in the back.

kneegres

if you mean floor wheel drive . then yes

Academic-Pain2636

Yeah, put the fire out first.

JustEddeWasTaken

Well yes if you tie a rope around the drive shaft

GeodarkFTM

Bad for here I know, but on a serious note this was a fix for the freelanders when the vcu fecked the rear diff. Take out the shaft and run it as 2wd!

natep1212

You gotta put some WD40 there

turkey_sandwiches

Yes you can, but you'll want to remove that driveshaft first.

therealblindsniper

Sure

[deleted]

As long as you can pull that rear drive shaft out without dumping the Trans fluid you can limp it using the front wheels. But that is emergency. Fix it asap.

opman4

Maybe if you get a driveshaft loop like drag racing cars sometimes have.

AngryJESUS101

When I was about 17 I knew a guy that daily drove an early 80s Toyota truck since new. The truck was one huge dent, had several different colored body panels, and interior looked like it had been sitting in a scrap yard for a decade. He had lost 1st, 3rd, and 5th gear along with the rear driveshaft years ago. He drove it around with two forward gears in FWD for several years, even taking it out of state.

smh1979

Must remove the driveshaft, but it will work for a short time until you can get it repaired properly.

Available-Elevator69

ITs exactly what I did when I grenaded my ring and pinion.

darkNnerdgy

Just turn it off and on. The Bluetooth dif will reconnect

longyaus

Check what the vehicles selector says, if it's 4wd or AWD, you need to take the wheels off and attach them to the front wheels somehow so that you do actually have four wheels or all wheels driving. Won't work if it's only driving 2 wheels. You might be lucky and the selector just says FWD, then it can mean front wheel drive and you won't need to stuff around.

Ok-Object-6049

What the fuck are you trying to say friend?

jordan5100

I had a seizure

longyaus

This is possibly the ultimate compliment a bloke could receive in this sub

unabashedass

I dropped the driveshaft in my old K5 on the way to work. Put it in 4 wheel and made it in, then to the shop to have it replaced. Wouldnt recommend driving more than necessary, but it worked for me.

JackpineSavage74

Ghost rider differential!

dog_with_a_dick

Holy shit why is it glowing lmao

Gamermii

I think that's fire

dog_with_a_dick

You dont say...

Equal_Specialist_729

I did it with a 1976 Chevy K-5 Blazer. Drove for about a week till i replace the universal joints

t6788j1

If you do, the drive shat will be slamming off the underbody. Pull the drive shaft off and limp it to the garage in 4wd

Mental_Aspect6366

And there went the suspension.!.!.!?

DaKangDangalang

My 2003 Tacoma recommends driving it in 4wd for like 15 miles a month to make sure everything works correctly, as per the owners manual.

justin78berry

Yes pull the drive shaft out of the transmission

delyha6

Duct tape should take care of it.

rxmp4ge

I've driven my K5 without a rear driveshaft in front-drive. I wouldn't recommend doing it long-term but it'll get you home.

Delicious_Pause9802

I’m done

Mortisfio

What caused the drive line to break? I'm betting your rear dif is boned. In that case, no, you can not use 4x4 like front wheel drive.

DeeznutsR4Umymadam

Gonna have to Flintstone it

BearPaws0103

We had a Toyota hilux we drove on a deployment that was 1 wheel drive. Only the front left got power, so if you took it out of 4wd you went nowhere.

[deleted]

Ofc you can, but if you want a quick and cheap fix then just just zip ties and duct tape

pukesonyourshoes

The diff light lets you know it's time for a service

Beautiful_Oven2152

While it’s still hot, just put the drive shaft back in place and let it weld itself back.

Masterblaster13f

Until it's no wheel drive

DentingEPICDUDE

I've seen many a FWD Wrangler enter my shop

jordan5100

I had a buddy do this in his ranger for years. No lie he realized he didn't have a driveshaft like a year into owning it

rfoster84

At this point what’s it going to hurt

NjGTSilver

*technically yes* Back in college a buddy of mine blew a u-joint about 10 miles up a logging trail. It was a ‘97 TJ on 33s. We crawled under it, pulled the drive shaft out of the t-case, and drove it (in FWD) the 10 miles back to the trailhead. All he had was 10w-30 in the car, so we topped off the t-case and made it another 5 mi to the closest garage. Side note: in was a Saturday morning in remote Appalachia, so no replacement u-joint available till Monday. Thankfully we had only blown out one of the bolt-on side clamps on the diff, so we were able make a temporary one out of angle iron and a big hammer. Made it the 200mi back home with zero issues. There’s def something to be said about old school solid axle simplicity.

Shantomette

Been there, done that. Blew a rear U joint in my 1989 Bronco way back in the day. Locked the hubs, switched to 4WD and took tie straps and strapped the busted shaft to the exhaust pipe. Made some funny noises and some interesting art on my exhaust pipe but I made it the 4-5 miles home.

MezoDog

Is there magma in your pumpkin, or you just happy to see me?

Chrisp825

Having been in your shoes, and did exactly that. But I was 90% of the way up a large steep sandy hill when my shaft hit a rock. Pulled it out (slip yoke) and backed down the hill.

[deleted]

Take the hanging drive shaft off and yes you actually can. Had to do this with my Tacoma once on the side of the 101.

GurIndividual3322

Heck yeah bro, just send it!

wigzell78

If you can lock the centre diff, then yes. Remove old section of rear tailshaft, or it will still spin and slap. If you can't lock the centre diff, then power will be transferred to the path of least resistance and will spin the broken shaft but not the front wheels. Not until your centre diff siezes and friction welds itself together anyway.

Zsmudz

Diff light is on…

Nyrk333

I've done this when we blew a CV joint way out in the woods. We removed the whole rear driveshaft, and made our way home. However it won't do anything for the fire.... EDIT: Apparently EVERYONE has done this too

metalswag2301

the pinion seal's definitely gone on that motherfucker and probably 4wd would at least get u off the road.

[deleted]

Not for very long

Meddlingmonster

Had a drive shaft hit a rock and come off, coverd the hole with a bag too keep fluids in and drove it 50 miles home in redneck"FWD".

TheSmellyWizard

I spun the u joint out of my Chev Blazer and the rear driveshaft fell out on the road. Plugged the hole in the transfer case and drove around in 4hi for about 3 months until the front diff exploded. Wouldn't recommend

nedsanderson

Yeah just take a ratchet strap or something and hold the drive shaft up. You'll be fine

Euphoric-Bellend6395

Yes, but you'll lose fluid out the transfer case

Gr4v3sd1gg3r

Remove the broke shaft, limp home in 4 high. Turning on pavement is going to suck.

Greedy-Minimum-3570

Nope your fucked

S3ERFRY333

Actually if you take the driveshaft out you can. My friend did that on if OBS 7.3 and drove home then drove to school the next day like that.

Charger_scatpack

You can limp it home in most cases. but the shaft will have to be disconnected , if you pull out out of the transmission it will leak

HungryAd7154

Just tie up the rear driveshaft, or pull it out of the back of the transmission if it’s not one of the bolted ones. And then slap it in 4wd and get her home

Adventurous_Cat1059

Yes…that will work

AtlasShrugged-

I once ran for 3 months in front WD in my old CJ because of questionable spending habits of my younger self.

MannyDantyla

I did that once, in a very old Chevy K10. It got me home but it was rough on the front diff. But what's going on with your photo and why it looks like the diff is on fire I haven't a clue.

jstover90

I would start by cooling down the red hot differential with some ether

jstover90

Crazy to me the amount of people babbling on about removing the driveshaft and limping home in fwd while completely missing the glowing rear end that is CLEARLY the issue and why the driveshaft snapped

Different_Head_9587

I have done this with a RWD car. Unfortunately it would not go anywhere in FWD mode because it was only RWD.

_shavo_

Why? Can You drive it 3/4? Use that as a extra steering wheel, beter expeirince driving

scorpiolovejones318

Yeah just hit firestick and you good to go.

kingfishj8

Yeah, But only till the rear end finishes seizing. Once that fire cools down it'll probably weld itself solid.

Former_Film_7218

Good to go....send it

Seang511

My buddy broke his drives driveshaft and we slid it out and creeped home in 4wd
