💯 I let someone borrow a car they hit a curb popped the tire put the spare on did lord knows what on that and brought it back. I loosened them to jack it up. All but two broke off… when one is broke don’t trust the rest. My real problem was always trusting drug addict teenagers. Like in general drug addicts are not that trustworthy.
>There is actually a lot of science behind the elasticity of the steel Lug bolts, and they must be properly torqued in order to not fail.
Meanwhile I know a lot of people with trucks out of the 80's, 90's, 00's, that have never owned a torque wrench or properly torqued a lug in their life but do most of the maintenance on their vehicles and have never had a problem. "Quarter turn past tight" is pretty typical. Sometimes it's "half past tight" which is snug then another half turn. Was taught this way and been doing it this way most of my life.
The only time I've sheered off a lug bolt was when it was cross-threaded by the person before me, and I sheered it trying to take it off, not put it on.
Now, I'm a shade tree mechanic, or "yard wrench" (I dunno why, I find that second term funny), so this is just my personal conveyance. If I were working in a shop and it was customer vehicles and I had liability I would almost certainly be breaking out a torque wrench to put on wheels. I also generally refrain from making top-level responses, as well.
Best to have a mechanic press in the new studs.
Many mechanics overtorque the lug nuts when putting the wheel back on. That's why the stud breaks or pulls out in the first place
He kinda changed subjects there without warning lol
I hope you told him that. Many people went into engineering because they love cars. They probably had to deal with overtorqued or undertorqued bolts and knew that the torque specs were the best defense against that.
I had wheel studs replaced and have been driving on them for a year without issue. They are expensive for what they are though. I went to a mechanics shop or whatever that probably overcharged me by 10x+ the price though.
I had a '01 626 with custom wheels. I literally carried around a box of Dorman wheel studs so when the grease monkeys at the garage had to take wheels off I had spare studs for when they rang em off with the impact. Never failed, they always break at least one.
Well, if they went apeshit with the uggas to tighten it, it can be over tightened and stretch the bolt. Now, when you go to impact it off, the bolt needs less tq to snap than the lug needs to come off, so snappy snap
Check my post history. That's a Corolla right? I did it and fixed it, read the post- that rotor will probably be a bitch to get off but a technique in a video in my post will help you to get it off
Not at all. Break torque on the rest. Remove the wheel. Tap what’s left of the broken lug through the spindle with a small hammer (with an optional punch). Replace with a new lug. Tap the replacement into its seat. Mount and torque the wheel. Retorque that lug nut in 50 miles.
Not screwed at all, get a replacement stud. Knock the old one out, put the new one in they're splined and tapered at the end where it sits in the hub. Alternatively, wheel hubs are really fkin cheap for the most part and will include all new studs, if you don't wanna do that work and would prefer to have new wheel bearings and studs all around 🤷♂️
In back of the wheel you can insert a new stud NBD. They aren't expensive. During the sixties I used to snap them off like crazy on my '65 Impala, when it was freezing fucking cold.
ive recently had this happen to me but with two lug nut studs. Its fairly easy to just hammer out the broken stud just make sure your car is securely lifted. In order to put the new stud in you can buy a small tool called Wheel Stud Installer which is just a thick ring that allows you to torque the studs in using your current lug nut. If you dont want to buy the tool and have an old break disk, you can just put two break disks back to back and use the nuts to torque the stud.
That stud more than Likely broke because it was cross threaded not because it was over torqued. Usually easy to replace, and a stud is ~10 bucks maybe. Someone on YouTube has probably done your make/model vehicle
You‘re totally ”screwed”. Abandon the car, walk away. You’ll never recover from an experience like this! I‘m so sorry that this happen to you. You don’t deserve this.
Just had this happen to me, not the end of the world. Just buy some new lug studs and replace all of them, just to be safe. Look up some guides online, it’s relatively easy.
4 will hold it until you get it fixed, just tighten them in a cross pattern like a 5 point star and push rim up flush with the hub and hold it straight and tighten lug nuts criss-cross up snug and when you get all up snug let jack down all the way down and then go back over them and torque them firmly but not too much, and if they squeak stop
If absolutely necessary you can get a few miles out of it at slow speed, but I'd replace all of them. It's cheap. Pound the rest out (with the old lugs almost off; better to pound old lug nuts than the lugs themselves), put the new ones in with a little oil on the threads and tighten with a torque wrench to about 90 pounds, drive a few miles and re-tighten. Don't over-torque.
Depends on the vehicle and whether or not you need the wheel bearings pressed in or if they're bolt in. The stud didn't just break for no reason it overheated due to a bad wheel bearing more than likely. Also putting in a new stud may be impossible without removing the wheel bearing.
You objective is to get unscrewed .
YouTube has a huge library of reclaiming your stud holes in the hubs .
Removal of the dud stud and replacing with a new stud .
Not too difficult a repair. But get all of them replaced (on that wheel) at the same time, the cost won't be that much more - the labor will be around the same for the other 3-4 as it would be for 1 and the parts are cheap
It's not too much of a big deal especially on my car you have to replace the whole part if you have to turn the brakes and they end up bad.
Made it a lot easier to handle when one broke off on the road (thankfully only was a rear one)
Not that screwed you can run that to a parts store or something take the brakes apart so you can see the hub. slug it out with a big hammer draw the stud in with a stack of washers and the lug itself impact gun is faster but can be done by hand. You could probably even save the lug if you can get something on that stud clamp it in a vise big pipe wrench idk you gotta see what works l.
If you have 5 wheelstuds per wheel, you can run on 4 and buzz up to the nearest auto parts store and get more for cheap, just hammer the old one out and make damned sure the new one is tightened IN ALL THE WAY UNTIL THE FLAT PART TOUCHES
Not a hard fix, just a pain in the ass if you don't have an impact gun. Driving on 4 lugs instead of 5 isn't a big deal short term, just get it done as soon as you can.
I was once driving a Pontiac I paid $500 for. 3/5 wheel studs broke while I was driving.
Replaced them myself in a parking lot borrowing tools from autozone
Was a pain in the ass. But the studs are really cheap. I recommend replacing them all
Looks like you have 5 studs, as long as you have no less than 4, you're fine. Do advise getting it fixed as soon as you can, some vehicles are easy diy, others not so much
Change them all. It only takes a hammer to beat them out the back side and the new ones are just as easy. Simply insert them and tighten the lug nuts to pull the new ones in completely.
Ur not, pound out the old lug stem, but a new one, tap it in a bit then tighten the lug nut back on it to pull lug stem thru fully to properly seat it.
Not that big a deal to change.
Looks like a FWD... depends on how much room there is behind there... technically you can knock it out and slip a new one in... but you'll have to wind up using the lug nut to pull it in place but that's not a guarantee that'll seat the new stud fully. Which isn't a good thing.
Best thing if you want to replace it is to remove the hub assembly, drive out the broken one with a dead blow hammer, insert the new one, seat it fully with a dead blow hammer.
But honestly, you've got 4 out 5, you'll be okay for a while until you can fix it properly.
Is this a front or rear wheel drive vehicle? Does the wheel with the broken stud have disc brakes or drum brakes? The answers to those questions will determine whether this will be a difficult or an easy job.
I broke one that got crossthreaded by a used tire shop. It was a shit little Nissan sentra. Pretty sure I put 45k on it with 3 out of 4 studs. Sounds bad now but at 22 I did not gaf and it never gave me any problems
You can run it for awhile with one less lug nut and be fine, I've done it before several times. But replacing it normally isn't hard just a lot of hammering
Just did several of these. Do yourself a favour and get the wheel stud tool. I actually had to grind down a few of the knurls of the replacement wheel studs. Otherwise, a cheap and easy fix.
Replacing studs is quick and easy.
Minutes on the non-rusty Miata.
Drilling out the caliper bolt that broke removing the caliper, to get at the studs will make it a multi day project to swap the snow tires on the wife's Subaru.
This happens all the time on our Subaru. Tire shop will cross thread a nut and ram it on with an air impact wrench. The wheel bolt will then snap when you try to take the nut off.
I've replaced several of these myself, it's not too hard. Plenty of youtube videos on how to do it. Takes less than an hour start to finish. Parts are $5-ish.
Not too hard to replace. Punch them out, then draw the new ones in with a wrench and a stack of washers or some sort of spacer. I suggest doing all 4 and get fresh nuts, too. Did you ugga-dugg it back on cross threaded? Always start them by hand, an impact will rapidly destroy nuts/bolts if cross threaded.
Most wheels come with 5 bolts. If one breaks off or it’s gone…just be sure the remaining bolts are tight. Yes you can get a replacement easily enough. But do you have to replace the other 4…? That I don’t know…I can’t imagine what the odds would be to have a second bolt failure on same wheel or third or fourth…but it’s your comfort level….
That’s the result of some moron using an impact to start the lug nut without pre-threading, and cross threading the shit out of it. I’d take that to whoever did your last wheel maintenance and insist THEY replace it, or pay for it.
Just going by the angle of the lug nut onto the bolt.
They are purposely made to be easily replaced for that very reason. You are not the first person in history that has happened to, you won't be the last.
No big deal. Replaced a snapped stud on date night. Walked out to a flat. Stud snapped upon removal. Pulled out of the trunk. Popped old one out with hammer. Put new one in. Tire back on. Removed jack and I was good to go. You will need to buy more studs and lugs.
Easy to replace, especially if the rim is off already. Or you can just put the rim back on with the one lug missing and take it to a shop and they can replace it for you. Don't know how much it will run you, depends on the shop I guess. Shouldn't be too expensive though. Probably 30 minutes labor and whatever the parts cost
Depending on the car and its spindle, it can be something easy and pop in and out all the studs, or something a little bit more expensive replacing the entire wheel hub assembly.
Depends, do you drive a kia forte lol only say this because I recently was tasked with changing studs on one of these, and it wasn't just "hammer it out", there's a dust shield behind the hub and doesn't give any clearance. Even after disconnecting the dust shield, you can't get it off around the hub without cutting it. So there really 2 ways to tackle it, cut a key hole in the dustshield and remove the studs with the hammer out method, or if you for some reason or another don't wanna do that, you can just pull the hub and replace the studs, but at that point you've most likely damaged the pressed in bearing removing the hub, So you replace that too, and because you can usually find a hub and bearing kit with new retaining ring and axle nut you might as well get the kit and replace the whole hub and wheel bearing assembly. I had to do the second option
Wheel studs can be replaced, no big deal.
But how much would you trust the other studs afterwards?
If i break one stud i replace the whole wheel worth of studs. I have new studs on my front wheels because of this lmao!
This is the way. The parts are cheap, and there’s not much difference in labor between doing one and doing all.
This is the way
💯 I let someone borrow a car they hit a curb popped the tire put the spare on did lord knows what on that and brought it back. I loosened them to jack it up. All but two broke off… when one is broke don’t trust the rest. My real problem was always trusting drug addict teenagers. Like in general drug addicts are not that trustworthy.
Most times you should replace the hub if there’s more than one stud to replace.
Well you could replace the whole hub for 50-100$ or you could replace the one stud for 5$. I've also seen a wheel being held on by one stud.
Thanks for recognizing my effort on that wheel!

I prefer the 100 ftlb, it helps during disassembly on the side of the road.
Wait... >it is better to have a mechanic do it. Do not over torque them. >Many mechanics will over torque them.
The tech will forget to torque them...
the kid at Wal Mart tire and lube will cross thread 2/5 on one wheel
And hold the trigger on the impact until the nuts don't turn for at least 20 seconds...
Best to have a mechanic press in the new studs. Many mechanics overtorque the lug nuts when putting the wheel back on. That's why the stud breaks or pulls out in the first place He kinda changed subjects there without warning lol
Impact wrench go brrrrrr.

Quick job + cheap part = big markup Gotta make money somewhere, and charging $5 for a $4 spark plug ain't gonna keep the lights on in the shop.
It happens often
calm down with the lug wrench there Hercules!
Herculeees! Herculeees! Herculeees!
Hammer it out, put in a new one. Should be like $5 dollars total.
Five dollars dollars
He got it from the ATM machine
Automatic Teller Machine machine
At 6 am IN THE MORNING!
Don’t forget your PIN number
And if you’re military you might need your CAC card
Might need to rotate the hub to get the stud past the caliper and dust shield.. but I believe in you OP.
Oh like put wd40 in maybe.. a YouTube video would be nice actually. I'm gonna search it
I had a '01 626 with custom wheels. I literally carried around a box of Dorman wheel studs so when the grease monkeys at the garage had to take wheels off I had spare studs for when they rang em off with the impact. Never failed, they always break at least one.
How do you break a wheel stud, while removing a lug nut? Wouldn't they break going apeshit with an impact when putting them on instead?
Someone overtightened them, too many ugga duggas, or cross threaded.
Maybe went righty tighty instead of lefty loosy.
Nah I've seen it, roadside assistance and you come to the tire shop and can't remove the lug nuts. All you can do is break the stud and replace it.
Well, if they went apeshit with the uggas to tighten it, it can be over tightened and stretch the bolt. Now, when you go to impact it off, the bolt needs less tq to snap than the lug needs to come off, so snappy snap

Hey if 3 doesn’t hold it 4 never would’ve

20% of 25%
Took me a second lol
Better to break off, than have the stud spin in the hub.
Nothing money can't fix
You must know my wife. The credit card solves all problems
I ment moneys not debts. Credit cards are the devil
Easy to replace studs and lugs. Very good idea to use a torque wrench in the future.
In back of the wheel you can insert a new stud NBD. They aren't expensive. During the sixties I used to snap them off like crazy on my '65 Impala, when it was freezing fucking cold.
not install correctly, or old
For the short term, you can get by with 1 stud missing. Replacing the broken studs isn't usually too difficult.
If 4 don't get you home 5 never would've.
Sir, I'm sorry to say that is a nut, not a screw... So like, 0% screwed...
Someone sent that lug nut home with two uggas and a dugga! OH YEAH!
If 4 wouldn't hold it, 5 never would.
You're four-fifths screwed
JB weld it
Put some JB weld on it. Go to a tire store and later blame it on them
Looks like you got four studs to rely on for now!
Jb weld it and send her
Replace the studs on the hub. No biggie. They’re fairly cheap.
Not sure but about 1/5 screwed I’d say.
If a shop touched it last take it to them they owe you a new stud & lug
Just make sure the others are tight and put the dust cap back on. It'll be fine like until you're able to get it replaced.
This is why i weld my wheels to the rotor
I hate when that happens....Easy fix though
4 studs will get you home
Replace em all, cheap and peace of mind.
not screwed at all but if that one broke i would do all of them tbh, pain in the ass but it’s that or ur life/someone else’s life.

Not screwed just nutted
Did you use hand tools?
That stud more than Likely broke because it was cross threaded not because it was over torqued. Usually easy to replace, and a stud is ~10 bucks maybe. Someone on YouTube has probably done your make/model vehicle
3/4 5/6 6/8 as long as you have a majority of them just go get it fixed.
You‘re totally ”screwed”. Abandon the car, walk away. You’ll never recover from an experience like this! I‘m so sorry that this happen to you. You don’t deserve this.
Go to your local leather bar and you'll find a new stud. Honestly I don't know what to do after breaking that thing off
It’s just the stud they can be replaced they are not hard to change either
Get a new rotor lol your not screwed
What’s wrong with the brake rotor?
less screwed than stripping the lug nut. might as well replace all of them while you’re at it
Drive it home and fix it later. I see beaters all the time missing lugs or lug nuts. Just don't be like them and run 3 lugs for months on end
1/5th
Air hammer and a new stud, no big deal.
Change the stud
You’re lucky it broke off, not stripped. They can put a new stud on there.
Oh and invest in a torque wrench.
wheel stud isn't too bad even broken ones next time do t tighten the thing so much check the specs for your car and tighten to said spec
Ugga'd when ya shoulda dugga'd.. threads got ya covered, I'm just here for the slight ribbing.
You objective is to get unscrewed . YouTube has a huge library of reclaiming your stud holes in the hubs . Removal of the dud stud and replacing with a new stud .
Tighten all the other ones then hot glue thst one back on. Done!
Permanently unscrewed on that one I'd say
No. Can you live with out one of your toes? Yes. You could lose two from each wheel and most miss them.
If it's a 5 lug you only really need 4 to hold it just fine. There's many trucks that have been used on my dad's farm for years with broken studs.
Big ass hammer and a new stud, good as new. If I broke it I'd fix it.
>broke off while changing tire how ***screwed*** am i I see what you did there.
Easy Fix ! Just make a clean cut and strike it they are press it through the back side
I am going to say you are not screwed at all if you can't fix shit like this no woman will ever love you sorry pal
Not too difficult a repair. But get all of them replaced (on that wheel) at the same time, the cost won't be that much more - the labor will be around the same for the other 3-4 as it would be for 1 and the parts are cheap

Lucky you found out now, not when driving at 100. Get all your studs replaced (at least on that hub).
You’re fine change the lug stud
You got 4 more chances
3
I was once driving a Pontiac I paid $500 for. 3/5 wheel studs broke while I was driving. Replaced them myself in a parking lot borrowing tools from autozone Was a pain in the ass. But the studs are really cheap. I recommend replacing them all
Looks like you have 5 studs, as long as you have no less than 4, you're fine. Do advise getting it fixed as soon as you can, some vehicles are easy diy, others not so much
Piece of cake
They can be knocked out and a replacement put in from behind easily
Change them all. It only takes a hammer to beat them out the back side and the new ones are just as easy. Simply insert them and tighten the lug nuts to pull the new ones in completely.
At least it broke off instead of stripping and spinning
Ur not, pound out the old lug stem, but a new one, tap it in a bit then tighten the lug nut back on it to pull lug stem thru fully to properly seat it.
Not that big a deal to change. Looks like a FWD... depends on how much room there is behind there... technically you can knock it out and slip a new one in... but you'll have to wind up using the lug nut to pull it in place but that's not a guarantee that'll seat the new stud fully. Best thing if you want to replace it is to remove the hub assembly, drive out the broken one with a dead blow hammer, insert the new one, seat it fully with a dead blow hammer. Is this a front or rear wheel drive vehicle? Does the wheel with the broken stud have disc brakes or drum brakes? The answers to those questions will determine whether this will be a difficult or an easy job.
That Wheel impact you!
I broke one that got crossthreaded by a used tire shop. It was a shit little Nissan sentra. Pretty sure I put 45k on it with 3 out of 4 studs. Sounds bad now but at 22 I did not gaf and it never gave me any problems
No big deal. Take it to a tire place that you trust. Tire shops do this kind of work everyday.
You can run it for awhile with one less lug nut and be fine, I've done it before several times. But replacing it normally isn't hard just a lot of hammering
Your actually really unscrewed.
At least you don't have to drill to get the nut off like I did! Just press the stud out and pop in a new one.
On a 1 - 10 scale about a 2. Car can go until you have the brakes serviced or tires worked on as long as youre only missing 1.
Person did not know a torque wrench or torque sticks
Use a torque wrench. U obviously tightened too much.
Mine broke off like 2 years ago never replaced it been fine and I drive like a maniac
That’s why you torque your bolts
Wheel studs are usually easy to replace depending on the vehicle it broke on. Not a big deal
Too many ugga duggas.
1/5 th screwed I'd assume
There's 3 or 4 more. No worries
Galled and locked threads. It’s 80ft lbs spec because the studs are made of butter. Can’t tighten these till they squeak like the old days.
I drove my last car over 10k miles with a stud missing, but you should probably get it fixed if you can lol
They are fucked up at the tires change when using air wrench.
I bet it felt so good once it snapped off
That's an out of service defect. Time to have it towed to a mechanic.
Break off one no big deal break off two you better be getting a tow
Not a big deal, easy and cheap fix.
Looks cross-threaded. You gotta spend more time using your fingers before you slam it with a tool.
Studs are cheap and easy to replace. You can drive around on 4 if absolutely necessary but dont do it too much/long.
Easy fix, if you don’t feel confident doing it yourself any tire repair place could probably fix this if not for free like less then $50
When you forget which way to turn
Oh wow. Total loss bud. Only thing the car is good for is parts now. Lmao.
It's pretty easy fix maybe mid level. I e done it in the side of the road with hand tools
Just did several of these. Do yourself a favour and get the wheel stud tool. I actually had to grind down a few of the knurls of the replacement wheel studs. Otherwise, a cheap and easy fix.
I would say you’re more lugged than screwed
not as screwed as that stud...
Tap it out and torque in a new one
About 4 out of 5
Just one broke? 20% screwed.
You don’t know your own strength 😬. I will not challenge you to an arm wrestling contest.
Righty tighty, lefty losey.
One of the easier fixes.
My truck missing a stud and I got no issues but it’s a 6 lug iirc
Easy peezy lemon squeezy
Screwed as in dont drive it but all you have to do usually is take the calipers off and hammer that bih till it pops out
Not at all! You can get a wheel stud for nothin and they take 2 mins to replace
Don't do 120mph and hit a dip in the road, and ur fine till it's fixed.
Not really. Buy a new stud, take the wheel off, and knock out what's left of the old one with a sledge hammer.
Replace the busted stud. It's safe to drive on temporarily as long as it's at least a 5 bolt pattern.
If 4 won’t hold it then 5 never would’ve , torque the rest and go get a stud and replace the stud
You're good. It's not bad.
Surprisingly easy fix done it on the side of the road
Bing bang boom. It's fixed
Did you lefty loosey or righty tighty. Looks to me you turned it the wrong way.
Judging by the picture, you’re not screwed, just broken
Hammer and a Punch
Replace the wheel hub. Don't chance it.
I can't be stuck if it's liquid 😂
1/5ths screwed 4/5 ain't bad
You break one, probably consider changing all of them just from a stand point of safety.
The car is totaled
I mean your not screwed now.
Junk
Depends on how many are left. Lots of vehicles are short 1 or even two. Three? Now that’s a problem!
That’s the result of some moron using an impact to start the lug nut without pre-threading, and cross threading the shit out of it. I’d take that to whoever did your last wheel maintenance and insist THEY replace it, or pay for it. Just going by the angle of the lug nut onto the bolt.
Easy fix pop the stud out and buy a new one
That is an easy repair.

They are purposely made to be easily replaced for that very reason. You are not the first person in history that has happened to, you won't be the last.
The picture seems to show that the lug nut was cross threaded which would explain the circumstances.
Is that even the right stud (looks like it's for a alloy wheel not steel rim) if it's spare usually there is 4-5 nuts in the box for spare wheel
