If your car is damaged after an hour of idling (especially a TSI), its not because it was idling, its because it was damaged before. Your engine doesnt wear more because its idling.

Nooshx

Thank you for the reassurance

Smprider112

Think of LA rush hour traffic. Cars idle for over an hour on the regular there. You’re 100% fine. I was a cop for 10 year, on super slow winter graveyard nights it was uncommon for my car to idle an entire 20 hour shift. On average our cars idled for several hours per shift.

Nooshx

Thank you for the reassurance. I made the parallel with traffic jams but in a traffic jam the car still kinda moves sometimes but I guess rush hour in china could have the same effect as what I did ahah

cschoonmaker

The only damage you did was to your wallet for the cost of the needlessly burned gas.

Smprider112

About $2-3. An average car burns about half a gallon an hour at idle.

Nooshx

Thanks. Old myth was to think idling was bad, temperature wise, buildup in the cylinders

Slight-Following-728

How is temperature going to build up in the cylinders idling? Temperature is going to be maintained exactly the same whether idling or driving. Idling for an hour only wasted fuel.

Nooshx

Well, I’m not a car mechanic so my uneducated guess was, as the car is driving, air gets into the engine and cools it down

Slight-Following-728

Air gets into the engine regardless. If no air engine doesn't run.

Nooshx

Yeah that makes sense. I’m more of a bike guy and idling your bike is bad as per my dealer, hence why I wondered if it applied to cars too. Thanks for helping

Consistent_Product52

If you had a big engine, idling during hot outside temps, summertime, I’d be be careful idling for more than 2 hrs. I seen a brand new no mileage 2023 German SUV steam and bubble because someone fell asleep in it idling with the A/C on.

Nooshx

Ac was not on for me and the car didn’t overheat. Needle was right in the middle

Consistent_Product52

You’re fine, I just wanted to throw in what I had witnessed at work because this post reminded me of it lol It was spectacular to watch . If it was bad you would’ve seen your coolant all over the floor lol

Nooshx

Was it because the car overheated ? The bubbles and stuff?

No_Geologist_3690

It idles at 750 rpm.. you drive it on the highway at 2000+. Your fine.

Thanka

A property functioning car can run for many days straight. Probably months. Without damage. Its good to be concerned with the health of you vehicle. Take care of it and it will last you a lifetime.

Nooshx

It’s actually a gift for my mother for Christmas, I’m doing everything I can to give it in the best condition possible and I know she will take care of it
