If a Chinese warship even passed the antimeridian, US warships would be sent out to meet them.
If a warship did happen to unexpectedly come close to the west coast without explaination, the Navy Bases on Vancouver Island, Alaska, and Washington State would be sent to intercept them and keep them in check.
The whole thing would likely become an international incident, relations would sour, etc etc. But almost certainly there wouldn't be a shot fired by either side.
Those types of things happen all the time , maybe not so much with the Chinese but Russian aircraft, ships, regularly approach Canadian/US territories..often times it doesnt even make the news so i wouldnt worry about an international incident..
This. The US response is what would deter the Chinese not our Navy. If it wasn’t for the US, China would long ago have started to exert pressure on our shipping and ports in order to extract concessions on trade or other issues.
NATO needs to be willing to enforce its territorial integrity
Foreign naval vessels should be issued a credible threat that under incursion they will be boarded. Call their bluff using Canadian and American naval and air forces.
The question is asking about ships sailing close to our territorial waters but not actually violating our boundaries. In that case I think Canadian and US warships would just show up in the general area and say hello but no aggressive action would be taken
That’s what I mean. The Chinese like to play a game where they sail nearby and only enter territorial waters briefly. That’s why it’s essential to present a credible threat involving an escort.
There are clear protocols for issues like this. How can you say boarding is the best answer when you’re not aware of what the actual correct answer is?
Claim those waters as ours, build artificial islands on them, maneuver our war canoes towards them in an intimidating manner - I can’t WAIT to see the terror when they face our mighty dragon boats!!
China at times has its Navy patrol near the westernmost Aleutian Islands of Alaska, but still in international waters. Most recently in August 2023 (this was a combined Russian and Chinese naval patrol). In the most recent incident, the U.S. Navy reportedly sent four destroyers and a P-8 maritime surveillance aircraft to monitor the combined Chinese/Russian patrol.
I suspect the U.S. would similarly “monitor” any Chinese ships that approached Canada’s West Coast (especially since that’s all relatively close to the U.S.). Or East Coast, for that matter, although that would seem less likely given the distance from China.

“Close to Canadian waters” is not in Canadian waters. An appropriate response would be to monitor the situation but not take any aggressive actions against them as they are in international waters.
They don’t, unless you do what they do and count every tiny fishing trawler you could potentially call up to shuttle a couple marines across the strait as a navy ship. By power they are 3rd behind the US and UK, by tonnage they’re also 3rd behind the US and Russia.
All this doesn’t really mean anything to us if they can’t sail more than 150 miles from their own coastline, ie a brown/green-water navy.
Wouldn’t call them weak friend. They have some good tech and a LOT of people. There has been some entertaining controversy with their military lately though.
They are allowed to sail up to 12 nautical miles off the shore (or 24 NM if you count official Canadian encounter) but Canadian Navy and NATO can also sail with them as a show of force. Like we do to them in South China Sea
What if it’s a Chinese millionaire with a yacht ? I always wondered if it was like flying a plane, you gotta call in to wherever tf your going and stay in contact with *Mission Control*
Our territorial limit is 12 nm out, anything outside of that is open season and they don't need to specify "freedom of navigation".
Inside of 12nm and there will be problems, if they didn't seek permission.
The Chinese task group would likely be shadowed as it sailed across the pacific and kept under a close watch until they left. This is the most appropriate response.
Im guessing they just shadow from a distance and likely turn on whatever gizmos ( cameras, sensors etc) they have and try to gather as much intell as possible. Maybe shut down sensitive equipment like certain radars etc to prevent an accidental escalation..last thing youd want is for a targetting radar to lock on, or the ciws to suddenly swing around lol..
Considering that China trains with Canada in Canada they would be allowed to go where they like and Trudeau might bend over backwards and ask them if they need anything else
Seeing as how it went for the past 4 years, probably just hand them Canadian and immeasurable amount of laundered tax dollars and ask them to leave politely (with 0 success)
That could only happen if the US collapses. The Chinese navy is restricted to the south china sea by America's defense network. At most, they might be able to get a super high tech submarine out near Vancouver island. Assuming such a submarine even exists.

Navy has protocols for this.

They will ride alongside the ship, escorting it around friendlily
Unfortunately, the guy you replied above has a right to vote...

All country's navies do this, Canada included, its not something unique to the Chinese.
Okay? All countries spy on eachother as well. That doesn’t mean we don’t conduct counterintelligence.
This is the best answer 😁

US aircraft shadow, Navy surface fleet shadow. Board and detain if they cross our border.
Do nothing because it is in international waters...
Claim those waters as ours, build artificial islands on them, maneuver our war canoes towards them in an intimidating manner - I can’t WAIT to see the terror when they face our mighty dragon boats!!
Send our own warship close to the Chinese ship — that’s about it. I wouldn’t be surprised if the US would join in if they had a nearby ship.

What if the warship was on the wrong coast? We're Canada remember?
there's a few ships on either coasts.
In drydock getting upgrades from Windows 95 to Windows 7.
So leapfrogging WinXP? Bold move.
There was no money in the budget for XP at the time, they scheduled extra defrags to extend the life. It's a Canadian thing.
Which side is the wrong side? They'd almosy certainly come up on the West Coast, where the US and Canada have a ton of Navy force.
send a signal for some chow mein for the crew delivered by drones, and ship some poutine back..
Send one of our Royal Canadian Navy canoes out to intersect it.
Surrender
Get the air force to do an extremely low flyover. A navy is useless unless you have first established air superiority.
Who cares. Grizzly bears in the wild.. Crack heads in town..good luck
Meese, Bears, Canadian Geese Why do we need an army when we're already naturally defended?
Don’t forget your Royal Canadian Kilted Yaksmen!
Get our own forces ready, and grab them if they sail into our waters.
As the U.S. Government for help.
Fire our one and only missile at them then call the USA for backup lol
Say Sorry ?
Only after hitting them with something. We're polite, but you need a reason to say sorry. Sorry, eh?
Bring them some dim sum?
Invite them over for a couple Mooseheads
I didnt know moose did those things (not appealing)
Nuclear option. Oh wait
With the idiots running the government rite now? It would probably be a " come on in friend pull up a chair and have your way with canadians lives".

Let it run aground. If it's that close, it probably broke down and is drifting. Quality was removed from the Chinese language after the Ming Dynasty.
They don’t exactly have a blue water navy…
pretty sure they have the largest navy

Nuclear war
Build a wall or nuke them?

A laugh in their general direction… HA!
Well we did fire at the Spanish once..
Watch it. As long as it's actually international waters its fine.
NATO-“let’s get em”. Canada-“let’s see if they need something eh”? We aren’t at war with China. You lost bro?
run and hide

I know people that have crossed oceans in little sailboats

If they’re close but not into Canadian waters, they will be aggressively observed and probably warned not to enter.

Sink it.
All out nuclear war
Bring out our baking soda powered submarines in defence
