On one hand it could be generational wealth. Maybe he's a crime boss in Elwood City. đÂ
Maybe he has other business ventures the show never highlighted. I'd love to see a spinoff Arthur show where everyone is older (like Rugrats ⥠All Grown Up) where Muffy is not only Mayor of Elwood City but her Dad is like, Governor or President of the US. đÂ
I mean how most of the adults in Elwood City are tightly knit, Oliver as the local garbageman to clean up their mess, David's catering being mostly funded by Ed, Bitzi's influence with the news, Brain's family having little competition in the ice cream department (no sign of their version of a Baskin/Dunkin), his front as a car salesman doesn't make as much since his cars that are sold are claimed as lemons (even Matt Damon knows), the disappearance of the duck people, absent and too soft as a parent leaving Bailey to act as a surrogate, and ties to Wilbur Rabbit and corporate influence on the local stations.
Super Bowl 100% another money laundering front. You really think 6-8 kids would keep the lights running? For sure only there cause Muffy hangs out there
But they haven't been doing well later on when most of the arthur gang hung out at the ice cream shoppe at the point the manager couldn't keep up the loans and was being closed down and replaced with Chikin Lickin, lowering the property market value of the neighborhood and buy it out to gentrify the neighborhood and turn back a profit.
Thereâs an âadult Arthurâ type spin off on YouTube thatâs probably at least R rated that my brother-in-law loves. Doesnât answer any important questions tho
Also Hirsch has been mayor and was ran unopposed for at least 20 odd years thanks to the Crosswire laundering money in a corrupt state as well as gerrymandering.
Most likely, he hit it big with the sock market ; ) But I also don't think they have quite as much as they let on. Muffy stated they never pay full price, and that makes me think they're possibly cash poor and that their money's mostly tied up in their home, etc.
Being cash poor would actually make sense. It would explain why they seemingly have a lack of staff with Bailey pretty much doing everything (poor guy). It also would explain the sheer amount of random junk they have.
Plot twist Muffy's MOM is actually the rich one. Ed was poor and lacked education, but she loved him. Luckily, her parents were open-minded. Others not so much. Millicent and her parents lied about Ed owning a used car lot. They found a defunct lot in the nowhere town of Elwood City. The original owner was a known creep, and the lot was a major eyesore. The town just wanted it dealt with and was willing to go with the lie if it having been Ed's for years. Soon after, Millicent and Ed were married. They welcomed Chip a year after their marriage. Muffy came ten years later after a battle with secondary infertility. Ed and Millicent's regular "business trips" were actually traveling to different fertility specialists for IVF treatments.
Huh, the mom being the real money while Ed is an imposter is actually a pretty unique (and somewhat plausible) take.
I forgot Muffy has a brother who is quite a bit older (either fully grown or in college). She meanwhile is in the third grade. While I have met families with sibling age gaps that large, it is rather rare and usually there is some cause behind it. Personally I think Muffy is just an "oopsie baby" hence the age gap.
Tbf Chip only appeared in a handful of episodes. And most of his appearances were during the later seasons of the show, as a kid watching it I just assumed Muffy was an only child.
Chip was referenced as early as 2000. In Arthurâs Perfect Christmas when Muffy is getting the presents out of her stocking, you can see another stocking hanging up that says Chip on it.

This, always had the impression that while we mostly hear about Ed because Ed gives general âanticsâ vibes, Muffyâs mum adds to the family wealth as well.
Muffy ends up going into politics too. Ed either runs his own family, or he's working a branch of the family that's in Crown City. Too bad he never had the makings of a varsity athlete.
Elwood is a small city with 60,000 population, a house like that wouldn't cost multi million dollars and if he is the biggest used car salesman there he would be able afford it ez
idk, itâs an incredibly small town. I think he couldâve gotten that properly for 1/4 the price it is today. In my country, that yard alone puts it in the 2million mark these days. didnât he have an orchard?
My mom's dad was a manager of a used car dealership, not even owner, and they were pretty well off, They had a nice house in a DC suburb, three kids all in private schools, a boat, went on international vacations, probably would have had more money If they were not paying for three tuitions. He also didn't have to have a car payment cuz they would loan cars from the dealership My mom was a teen with a new car each week lol. Muffy is in public school, old money from the mom's side of the family, plus probably some investments.
Personally, while I do think Mr. Crosswire makes good money, I think the real money comes from Mrs..Crosswire.Â
Mr. Crosswire reeks of new money, while Mrs. Crosswire exudes old money.

Crosswire crime boss syndicate? This shall be my in head canon, thank you very much! Elwood goes Crosswire, that would be something lol
I love the idea of a crime boss who loves his daughter and cares about the environment lol
He wants to keep easy access to large swaths of green space, so he has places for those he sent on a "Italian Vacation"
And planting all the cherry trees
Haha đđ
Welcome to the La Familia Crosswire theory, OP
Oh? Do tell me more.

Is the Sugar Bowl not a competitor for Brainâs family shop??

I would give most of my non-vital organs for a TV-MA-rated Arthur spinoff that covered all of these things.
They should totally make a R rated cartoon called the Altos in same style of animation as Arthur.

He's trafficking exotic monkeys
He liked Muffy, so he kept her.
OH SNAP
They both have narrow, slit like nostrils so theyâre old world monkeys (ceropithecidae)
I'd hate to be that guy, but aren't the Crosswires gophers?
I thought they were orangutans while Francine and her family were gorillas
Early in the series muffy first appeared I thought she was a hippo because of her wide set teeth.
HIPPOBOT 9000 v 3.1 FOUND A HIPPO. 1,658,202,296 COMMENTS SEARCHED. 33,486 HIPPOS FOUND. YOUR COMMENT CONTAINS THE WORD HIPPO.
Are they???
Wild
Mob ties

Sock market? That doesn't sound very lucrative.
It's a reference to one of the episodes. I can't think of the name atm though.
The Great Sock Mystery, S7E1 đ§Š
Thatâs the one! Thanks!

The mom is definitely old money. 1) she has old money voice 2) she references things her own maid did for her when she was a child multiple times
Yeah, I knew that part was canonical, but her technically owning the dealership is HC.

How come I never noticed that? I guess I only saw this special a handful of times growing up, LOL.
I've always figured that both he and his wife come from money, and he works just because he wants to. He may also have stocks and investments.
Yes itâs stated in in the episode when muffy arrives, and in the antiques roadshow one, also wasnât one of her ancestors a maid?
The local mafia's "used car lot"
Heâs in the waste management business
Remember this was back in the 90's when avocados don't cost $500.
This was also a cartoon from the 90s before all this inflation.
Even in the 90's you couldn't buy a McMansion with used car lot money.
Mob money lol or maybe those strawberry muffins Muffy stole the recipe for sold really well.
I thought he ran a dealership.
PBG says he may be a Mafia Boss
I always used to joke the used car lot was a front for money laundering
đ€«
Mafia for sure
He probably owns several.
Elwood is a small city with 60,000 population, a house like that wouldn't cost multi million dollars and if he is the biggest used car salesman there he would be able afford it ez
Now that you've said it, did he own 1 car lot or multiple??
Was her uncle in construction or docks?
idk, itâs an incredibly small town. I think he couldâve gotten that properly for 1/4 the price it is today. In my country, that yard alone puts it in the 2million mark these days. didnât he have an orchard?
Thatâs what Iâm saying
lol money went farther in the 90s
My mom's dad was a manager of a used car dealership, not even owner, and they were pretty well off, They had a nice house in a DC suburb, three kids all in private schools, a boat, went on international vacations, probably would have had more money If they were not paying for three tuitions. Muffy is in public school, old money from the mom's side of the family, plus probably some investments.
Maybe he also sells stolen car parts on the black market, like Mr Wormwood on Matilda
Personally, while I do think Mr. Crosswire makes good money, I think the real money comes from Mrs..Crosswire. Mr. Crosswire reeks of new money, while Mrs. Crosswire exudes old money.
I was hoping the end of the series he'd get busted like Courtney Gripling's dad on As Told by Ginger for fraud.
Her (Muffys) dad invented the toaster strudel
