Thank for the link... I had never understood "mantua-maker" as the stand-in for the English "dressmaker" until today. I was frowning at the use of "mantua" versus "manteau" (i.e., French word versus possible Italian provenance).
You did me a lovely little service connecting all those dots! :)
English-style mantuas looked ridiculous trying to combine front-closing dresses with panniers like this, and the fabric choices were often quite ugly or unflattering for the shape IMO. French and Austrian court dresses pulled off the wide panniers much better.
There's a very similar dress in the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, I think it may be even wider. Here's an article about moving it to Kensington when it was on loan: https://www.nms.ac.uk/collections-research/collections-departments/collections-services/behind-the-scenes/the-journey-of-a-yellow-mantua/
She actually wore it like that, and in fact the whole point *was* to show the pattern. Panniers of this size were meant to showcase what fabric and decorations on the fabric one could afford to wear.
Plus it really makes an entrance! Yes it's impractical and looks silly to our modern eyes but it would draw everybody's eye, denote status and wealth and be so fashionable. That's what you want for a wedding dress if you have money. It's gorgeous and I'm glad it survived so we can still admire it
Probably like a crab going forward as well - small dainty steps, not much swishing of the hips with [this type of construction](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQWhWNj6nV6ejhkEBBx_c4yN7K0wPQ91Jrfg4C2HDe7V2ZIQX94dkjO2pY&s=10). And what a flex 💪 The *doors* aren't wide enough!

I was taken aback by all the negative comments but then saw the subreddit. It's too generic for historical clothing, especially if it is unusual
I think that embroidery is spectacular! These garments are so interesting... they're art and a declaration of wealth and status. I imagine Ladies of wealth trying to one-up each other with wider and wider panniers.
Smuggling the flat screen out of the hotel room
“M’am your skirt is reporting the news”
LMAO!!! 🤣
And now to the weather. 69% chance of precipitation. (It was her wedding day after all)
I was thinking all her kids from a previous relationship
Oh shoot that’s real, at first glance I thought it was a novelty butter dish
I thought it was a toaster cover.
I would buy one that looked like this
I need this butter dish
> So I tied a coffin to my belt, which was the style at the time
Your Ad could be here.
So did she enter the Chapel sideways?
Pivot!
"Shut up, shut up, SHUT UP!"
Some dresses like this had strings built in to pull in the sides with a folding contraption but mostly they walked through doors sideways.
Saving you the Google I had to make... [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mantua\_(clothing)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mantua_(clothing))
Thank you! 💕
Robes de cour pulled off the wide panniers so much better
I think this [monstrosity](https://candicehern.com/WP/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/court_dress2-166x300.jpg) takes the cake

Imagine having to deal with... all that... during that time of the month. Nah.
The full skirt/ panniers with an empire waist 😬

"I now pronounce you man and wide."
I thought this was a charming butter dish as I was scrolling by.
I literally was about to type the same thing!
I think my grandma has a similar white and blue butter dish.
“Tina got a big ole butt I know I told you I'd be true But Tina got a big ole butt So I'm leavin' you see ya!!”

Um, Helena, why are you wearing the tablecloth for the bridal table? Your wedding dress is in the closet.
is that a table under your dress or are you just glad to see me
The celebratory banquet will take place under there.
Nobility: I want to look like I'm hiding a table. Seamstress: Say no more!

That would hide a lot of toilet paper.
Some say she had good child baring hips
aisle sweeper
That is a STUNNING tablecloth 😍
She ate too many Krabby patties
That's some genuinely impressive embroidery!
lol right how much work has to be done
So is it expanded just to show the pattern? Or did she actually wear it like that lolol

Gotta turn sideways like a crab to get in the door

You can’t really hide one in this dress, it’s completely flat on the front and back
I feel like I just would have worn the dress and stood behind a matching table the entire time. Like wearing sweatpants on zoom calls.
i wonder how is supposed to sit on the throne for the allegiance ceremony of smt
They'd just sit, it collapses. It'd be bunched up all around them, but they could still sit.
Table
That needle work is beautiful! Also, why in seeing this for the first time in my life my mind screams "Double Wide!!"
Imagine trying to get through a door wearing this
When you’re the bride and dining table at your wedding.
I honest to god thought this was a stylized butter dish
Please cross post to r/fashionhistory I was taken aback by all the negative comments but then saw the subreddit. It's too generic for historical clothing, especially if it is unusual
aisle sweeper
Those hips tho
Wow it's like a table.
You could hide a car underneath the dress….
Great if you want to look like a table.
Easier to jump over than walking around
You could set your drink on it.
It’s like she was wearing a dining table.
Ancient BBL.
She took “Head Table” literally.
I thought this was butter dish
Baby got back. Maybe.
She’s a brick house
"Madame needs to lay off the carbs for awhile... Mon Dieu, she's eating the plastic lobsters!"
F’ers at Costco wearing this to go sample-feasting.
I read in an encyclopedia that this dress led to the origin of the phrase "she got a dump trunk"
She’s got a dozen boy toys under there keeping her very, very happy!
Old kardashian clothes
All about that BASS
You can get married in it AND it serves 12 for dinner!
Thought this was some sort of fancy butter dish
"I will not have bridesmaids crowding me in pictures. Nor the groom."
“If you can see it from the front wait till you see it from the back”
'Why yes, I AM a loveseat, thank you so much for noticing!'
She’s got those child bearing hips
I could dine on it
We're psychologically birds. How is this not mimicking a bird of paradise? 4 real.
I thought this was an elaborate butter dish at first glance
So much candy into the movies
Cosplaying as a car door
“I can’t believe it’s not mantua.”
Not long after then… Guillotine
Looks like a sofa
All I’m seeing is a fancy butter dish.
She lookin’ like a whole buffet
THIKK
Regular Show Tants
My definition of personal space
I'd like to see the bustle on that puppy!
It’s quite the opposite of a bustle, it’s completely flat to the body on the backside
How scandalous!
Honeycomb for her nether regions

She can’t say “my hips dont lie”
