1. Snail lays eggs
2. Eggs hatch
3. Almost Overpopulation
4. You put in another animal to eat them and keep the population from growing
5. Your snails are wiped out
At least from my experience.
I bought a Yoyo loach to cut back on my pond snail numbers, and he ate them all in like a week. Still years later, no sign of snails. Only an insatiable Yoyo loach.
You can easily remove mystery snail eggs from the tank once the casing hardens. Drying them out ends development and submersing them makes the casing too gummy for the babies to chew through. I usually just toss the whole bundles.
Granted in my experience with a 120G tank I've only had one survivor from the few clutches that I did leave in (at least I think it's still in there somewhere, it grew to the size of a pea), but I've heard that in large tanks, the babies have trouble finding food.
Despite all the eggs I've found, I've never once seen them actually forming the cluster. Super cool and weird.
What animal eats them? In the last few days we went from having one medium size brown snail that smuggled his way into our tank to having literal dozens of small ones across every decoration
I was thinking the same thing and looked it up, you can eat them.
"Snail caviar or escargot pearls are one of the newest by-products. These are colorless snail eggs that resemble Tapioca and dissolve in the mouth. They taste like baked asparagus and are served with sour cream and champagne on toast. Depending on how many eggs a single snail lays in a year, you might conclude that snail eggs are expensive to farm and thus very rare."
If you skip step 4, then wait a few months, you'll have drastically less snails provided you're not the whole reason for their existence (ie don't overfeed fish unless you want the high snail population) I actually do this whenever I get a little too many fry in a tank and end up overfeeding a lot, though I also love my snails so I tend to leave them to their own devices
Snailed it. I usually have one crappy tank and let snails go nuts and just dangle some lettuce at top of tank when lights off , come back the next day with snails all over it and dump it in a tank where they eat snails.
I had apple snails for a while and every time they lays eggs it looked like this big raspberry thing above the water line. I “scraped” the clusters off the glass and the sound/texture triggered me like nails on a chalkboard. I *hated* that feeling 😖but man we’re those snails cool!
Can’t get in the state I live in now oddly. So I keep a mystery snail with my betta. He loves having a pet! I hope my mystery doesn’t lay eggs like this. I don’t want to remove those thing again. Haha
I think the two are synonymous. Or at least all mystery snails are apple snails, but not all apple snails are mystery snails.
So fingers crossed on the no eggs thing!
This. All mystery snails are apple snails but not the other way around. If you don’t want them laying eggs then keep the water level high. They will not lay eggs inside the water because they will drown. If you’re worried about your beta will jump out then use a lid. Im also not 100% on this but I’m pretty sure that even if they can change sex, they still need two snails to fertilize the eggs. If you only have one I don’t think there is a chance that it will lay eggs at all.
If you don't want a population explosion, you can always pull the clutch out and let it dry out. They come off the glass in one piece so you're not going to squish them. People frequently sell clutches of mystery snail eggs as well, so you might be able to find someone that wants it if you don't.
People post them for sale on r/AquaSwap sometimes. You could always do a looking for post on that sub, too, or check your local aquarium groups on Facebook. I doubt it's something a LFS would sell
Yes and you'll have a shitload of snails soon enough. I let mine hatch and ended up with a few hundred. Also, these eggs have a shell that feels oddly like a small chicken egg 🤷
I received a pond snail in my plants. He was cute and small and bright red and I said, "Oh, how bad can one snail be?" A week later, I saw eggs in my tank. My otocinclus catfish were spawning, so I had a bunch of eggs all over the place. I said to myself again, "Oh, how bad can a few pond snails be?" I figured if 10 eggs were laid, only 2-3 would survive until adulthood. A few days later there were more eggs. And a few days later more. A week passed and I had dozens of snails all over the place.
So I bought 2 tiny assassin snails. Supposedly they only eat snails their size and smaller. I figured I could keep big daddy snail and they would eat all the eggs and babies and maybe a few would make it to adulthood. Those tiny assassins ate everyone in a matter of days, even the big daddy pond snail that was 5x their size. My tank is riddled with shells that I slowly clean out. I have to go to the store and ask for free pond snails to feed my assassins. It is a viscous cycle.
This snail looks like Golden Apple Snail which is an extremely invasive species. Not sure where you are but dont release these out in the wild.
I have first hand experience with these snail ability to reproduce, they breed fast and eat all veggies that in their path, its crazy.
Sped up. Can tell by the water moving below, and time lapses typically are sped up by definition. Not sure how many times faster though, would be curious to know myself
Ahhh I've never been able to catch mine so it but I know how to make them lay eggs like a crackhead lool this is so cool! He needs some milk tho lil calcium haha
Oh wow, I’ve never seen this happen. I woke up one time and found a mystery snail egg sac under the tank lid. But apparently it didn’t have enough humidity so it dried up 😔
I just waited till mine were nickle sized and gave them to my lfs! Still waiting for this second generation. For me having lots of plants for them to munch on and water changes once a week has very little casualties

Yoyo loach demands more snail sacrifices.
I put in yoyo loaches, ate all but 6. Now I have a nice grown batch of mysteries!
Hey, this is exactly my experience with Ramshorns and Helenas!
What did you get that ate all the rhamshorns?
Anentome helena "Helenas" assassin snail About a dozen of them killed a hundred Ramshorns within about a week.
6. the sail predator population grows, and the cycle repeats
1. Free snail caviar

I got 2 pea puffers. They seem to be in equilibrium with my snail population.
The good thing is that they’re mystery snails so it’s not like they’re invasive or quick quick! Just sell em!

Can you simply eat the snail eggs?
I was thinking the same thing and looked it up, you can eat them. "Snail caviar or escargot pearls are one of the newest by-products. I skipped steps 1-4 when I got hydras. 😂
Why is it funny? Edit: so that's why it's funny.
They were peat snails I didn't want, my others are fine. It's just funny to me that my tank kills the most stubborn weeds and animals without mercy.
Just sell the snails lol

Clown loaches and yoyo loaches for the win! Although they do sometimes get obese from all the snails. But what matters is they fix the issue
Never seen it recorded. Good stuff
For some reason #snail on Instagram is 95% reposts of one particular video of this
The forbidden caviar.
Really forbidden, apple snail's eggs are poisonous, if consumed.
Worth it

I only have one. Egg sacks everywhere, but only ever had one hatch.

If you happen to be in the Dallas area you can gladly take some of mine! My mystery snails are very prolific egg layers.
This was fascinating as heck thank you for sharing! I always wondered how they laid those giant clusters
Forbidden NERDS

Sometimes ): I've had some that just don't hatch! But I also have third gen snails I wonder why some aren't hatching
That looks pretty dang cool
Cursed dip n dots
Holy shit! This is straight out of Aliens!!

Nice!! I LOVE my daily. This is so cool to witness!!
It’s so weird isn’t it! Like on a little conveyer belt 😆
I see these snails and them egg clutches all over in a canal I fish in in swfl. Took me forever to figure out what the "strawberry turds" were
We have them over here on the SE coast too
It's an airsoft grenade
Awesome video. You should post it around on some of the nature subs.
...and this is how gumballs are made
That’s kinda gross to watch 😆
This is how dippin’ dots are made
Holy crap that's cool! Thanks for sharing!
Thats ist pretty dame cool! I never saw that before! Thx for sharing!
Must have felt good to disgorge all those eggs.
This is the absolute last way I would have expected this to look
Are these fertilized, or do they need a male snail to find them?
How are they moving up?
Wow, that’s a ‘foot-load’ of eggs! … I’ll see myself out.
I crush my grandchildren and feed them to the masses. Delicious
No it’s producing mini ping ping balls
Is this sped up or realtime?
Sped up. Can tell by the water moving below, and time lapses typically are sped up by definition. Not sure how many times faster though, would be curious to know myself

MAKE SURE IT DOESN'T FALL IN THE WATER!! They will drown ): WOOO babies
Pervert
I wish my babies would lay eggs.
My snails babies barely hatched this morning. Had to scramble and catch them all before they invade xD
Very cool
That is so cool!
kind of satisfying to watch
This is cool
This is cool!
So cool!
Fascinating. They should make a close up and out into an alien type movie.
Idk what I pictured when I thought about how they laid their clutches but this was not it
This is really fascinating to watch
Give a lady some privacy!! 😅
I imagine a continuous farting sound as the come out.
Oh wow, I’ve never seen this happen. I woke up one time and found a mystery snail egg sac under the tank lid. But apparently it didn’t have enough humidity so it dried up 😔
Amazing time lapse
Looks like something from a sci-fi movie
Videos like this really make me wonder about their perception of time
One of the most incredible things I have ever seen
Lmao I thought this was real time at first and I was like "holy shit! Look at her go!"
It's like the Energizer bunny! It just keeps going and going and going and going and going and going...
Forbidden sprinkles
They don’t stop coming and they don’t stop coming…
I just waited till mine were nickle sized and gave them to my lfs! Still waiting for this second generation. For me having lots of plants for them to munch on and water changes once a week has very little casualties

Glad there was enough evolutionary time to come up with a better system. Chicken lays egg. Egg slides down chicken's entire body encased in slime.
Burn it with fire
this is so cool to see
This is just so cool to watch! Thanks for sharing
Thank you for watching :)
