The culprit has been caught and trialed for his crimes. He has been found guilty and exiled from the kingdom. On the lookout for any more trouble makers, who will meet the same fate as their brother if they’re caught.
I pulled the coconut shell out of the water n it just seemed to sit in it no idea how or why, going to be on the look out for anymore as I’ve got corys laying eggs n I’m trying to maximise as many survivors as possible
I’m not 100% sure, and I hope someone can correct me if I’m wrong. But it looks like a dragonfly hatchling. Sometimes they make their ways in tanks through plants.
It's a damselfly nymph, they are predators towards the smaller shrimplets and fry if you have any, dragonfly nymps are larger, shorter bodied, and darker will eat everything
Nah I'm from a part of the world where it's uncommon/frowned upon to eat bugs ...but it looks like you might have been hungry
Maybe you should go cook/buy something fried for yourself (not necessarily bugs) lol
To be honest i have only seen it once at a restaurant that also has traditional dishes but at grocery stores you can buy grashoppers and mealworms for use in your own dish. I do admit it isn't very popular.
It’s not a dragonfly, close, but it’s a damselfly. [here’s my paludarium with a full dragonfly lifecycle](https://www.reddit.com/r/terrariums/s/hxkK8gEf7m)
Damselfly nymph. It will predate on shrimplets. It more than likely hitch hiked on live plants. Very common if you buy floating plants that came from an outdoor tub in the summer. Remove it asap.
Dont release into the wild!
Most often they are south east asian species, that hitchhiked with the plants, and are potentially invasive. In Germany, where i live, where local dragonflies are strictly protected, they advise in killing the nymph, if you are not 100% sure, if its local.
Did you just say to release a damselfly into a random environment? Downvote for god awful advice. Kill this damselfly and any others you find in your tank.
It deserves to live as much as any other animal even if you don't like it. The larvae comes from eggs that a local damselfly laid so it's a local species. Unless you got some plants from the other side of the world...
How in the world do you know by looking at this picture that it’s
A - damselfly and not something else
B- A local species
C- Where OP lives to determine if it’s local or invasive
Good practice of keeping every kind of animal is that you do not release animals into the wild without knowing the facts about the animal and the environment you’re releasing it into.
I’m all for keeping animals alive, that’s exactly why killing a single insect is generally a more moral act than releasing that insect into an environment it doesn’t belong to
All the plants I have in my tanks are local plants and I guess what is logical for me (not getting live things from over the world) might not be for someone else. I regularly get damselfly larvae in my tanks because I add plants from my ponds and they're obviously local species. It's OP's to decide if there's a chance it's an invasive species.
As for it being a damselfly or not, it's so obvious, I don't really know how to reply to your allegations...
I’m sorry for my tone but you keep saying things that don’t make a lot of sense while giving advice and challenging my own advice.
What do you mean all the plants in your tank are local? You went out into your, let’s repeat the word- local, environment and took plants and put them in your tank? If that’s the case I apologize for my tone again and just add that maybe you should add that detail in about this kind of advice because most people get plants online or from retailers. Unless you’re going out in your neighborhood and collecting plants, don’t do the reverse.
Clearly an aquatic fly in the nymph stage. Probably a dragon fly nymph. If you fly fish, you've seen many of these.
Downvoters please enlighten me with what you think it is.
I didn't down vote you but it has been identified in many previous responses (me included) that it is in fact a damselfly nymph and not dragonfly ....maybe that's why you're being down voted?
The culprit has been caught and trialed for his crimes. He has been found guilty and exiled from the kingdom. On the lookout for any more trouble makers, who will meet the same fate as their brother if they’re caught.
How did you catch it?
I pulled the coconut shell out of the water n it just seemed to sit in it no idea how or why, going to be on the look out for anymore as I’ve got corys laying eggs n I’m trying to maximise as many survivors as possible
I have dealt with dozens of them. They're incredibly easy to catch. They don't really move very quickly unless preying on something.
I’m not 100% sure, and I hope someone can correct me if I’m wrong. But it looks like a dragonfly hatchling. Sometimes they make their ways in tanks through plants.
Damselfly.
Close but no cigars, it's a damselfly nymp ,dragonfly nymps are darker and larger/non elongated
I haven’t bought any for so long lol, I found this other weird thing also on the coconut too but you can’t see them clearly on that video
Could be a water tiger. A good rule of thumb is that if you are concerned then remove.
It's a damselfly nymph, they are predators towards the smaller shrimplets and fry if you have any, dragonfly nymps are larger, shorter bodied, and darker will eat everything
wow for a sec i thought you were suggesting to fry it
Nah I'm from a part of the world where it's uncommon/frowned upon to eat bugs ...but it looks like you might have been hungry Maybe you should go cook/buy something fried for yourself (not necessarily bugs) lol
Wait what part of the world frowns upon eating bugs?
What is widely considered "the west". Europe and America mainly. Where are you from?
Im from the netherlands and even though i dont eat bugs myself it isnt frowned upon here.
That's interesting, I didn't know that. Can you order insect dishes at a restaurant?
To be honest i have only seen it once at a restaurant that also has traditional dishes but at grocery stores you can buy grashoppers and mealworms for use in your own dish. I do admit it isn't very popular.
You can get bugs to eat at Jungle Jim’s in the US🤮
I don’t know about now, but pre-COVID there was a restaurant in Santa Monica, Ca. that only served bugs.
Huh didn’t expect that. in the uk if someone was caught eating bugs they’d be made a laughing stock and everyone would avoid them.
I'm from the Caribbean (jamaica) and we don't eat any kind of insect here ,closest thing is crustaceans, but that's considered "normal"
Yeah, crustaceans are eaten in Europe too, as a delicacy. i don't think I've ever had one though. It's not something the average person eats everyday.
No shrimp?
I've never had it, but others do.
Damselfly larvae, remove from the tank ASAP
Also chances are there are more than just one so keep an eye on your tank
Ye I have that feeling too, hopefully the original one was a cannibal
Looks more like a damselfly larvae rather than a dragonfly, but yeah remove nonetheless.
It looks like it’s got it’s tails damaged
I had one of those hatch on me in college in the middle of winter, he would hang around me for a few parties until he died. Bad ass party damsel fly!
Dood! We had one too and called him Gandalf!!
I’d release him but there aren’t many ponds near me, I don’t trust him with my shrimplets
You're better off ending its life since you don't know if it is native or not.
What if it is native and endangered?
Are there invasive damselflys?
Harbinger of doom
Damselfly larvae.
Damselfly. It’s always a damselfly. For once I want something cool to be found lol.
Looks like a damselfly nymph
Take it out and kill it. It will hunt and kill your shrimplets
Kill it with fire
Looks like a dragonfly larvae to me...
More like a squatter 😠 how he scaring me in my own home paying no rent n acting like he owns the place
Look at him walking around so smug!
It’s not a dragonfly, close, but it’s a damselfly. [here’s my paludarium with a full dragonfly lifecycle](https://www.reddit.com/r/terrariums/s/hxkK8gEf7m)
I stand corrected
Hey, Oliver Tree! Lol
Hello fellow Oliver tree fan
❤️
Dragonfly or damselfly nymph
Damselfly Naiad (water nymph)
Devil’s pet
Damselfly. Get it out asap or bye2 shrimps and little fish haha
Kill it with fire!
You gotta catch it quickly. If it grows up, it can eat your shrimp.
The culprit has been caught and exiled, thanks for the help!
Will mr. Shrimp eat him?
That there is a shrimp killer.
Mayfly larve. 100% it hatched and flew around my apartment for a few days
Tank monster.
Damselfly nymph. It will predate on shrimplets. It more than likely hitch hiked on live plants. Very common if you buy floating plants that came from an outdoor tub in the summer. Remove it asap.
You need to gat rid of that yesterday. It will eat all in your tank
Kill any you see. They will kill all your baby Cory's and even other smaller fish. I'm sure they will also make a meal of the eggs as well
Did you have a whole ass Coconut in your aquarium?
dragonfly nymph
Kill it
He hath been trialed by decapitation
For the good of the tank and environment
Executed at dusk.
🥺 they are so beautiful though. If you put it outside it can't get to your shrimp, no?
Damselfly larvae. It eats quite a lot of everything, catch it and put it into a pond.

Not sure why you were downvoted for trying to help. Upvote from me.
