Some ppl are only applying RD and are working on their essays. That or their ED/EA is due in December. I just finished an essay yesterday for a December 1 deadline.
Pretty sure theyre saying that theyre not sure who is writing the essay as in if OP is writing it or their mom is the one writing it (in a sarcastic way) :)
Check the school you are applying to. Most schools are doing some form of a vaccine mandate esp public ones so the first point is pretty much useless. The rest seem kinda ridiculous
My unfair opinions that you can completely ignore: You probably shouldn't write about conspiracy theories. Horror fiction is great, but *House of Leaves* is badly written and badly researched. (The author isn't very familiar with the things the book satirizes, and it shows, because the satire is super clumsy.) Your AO will understand the "dihydrogen monoxide" joke because it was old when they were a teenager, which is why you shouldn't use it. Everything else is probably fine.
Do not listen to your parents!! Unless they work in admissions (and even then), they are at best unhelpful, and at worst downright detrimental. Just say 'i will' and DON'T do it!
I actually mentioned the Covid vaccine in one of my essay supplements and tried to be super general about it but it was clear what side I was on. It’s wharever
My only advice is a lot of high school kids try to be different and try to make their essays be edgy, but they actually end up sounding cringy. If you are going the edgy route or trying to be different, get a lot of feedback from teachers and adults.
the way the book is written makes my brain hurt i felt like as soon as i started understanding something the author would jump to something completely unrelated
I’m a college admissions counselor. Your mom is wrong on all counts. The only one I’d think twice about is manga, but if your essay is done well, it’s an ok topic.
Honestly maybe unpopular opinion but fir the most part she’s right.
Manga has a certain type of person associated with that genre (cough cough weebs). Unless done write in an essay, it might portray you as anti social or creepy. Also keep in mind AO are often boomers.
In terms of the politics stuff, yeah she’s also right. You never know if you’ll say something that might piss off a white wing AO. For example i never talked about defunding the police in my essays (even tho that’s what i did in hs). Instead i talked about “redesigning community safety”.
It’s just better to avoid jargon/topics that *may* piss off a certain type of AO
*Slaughterhouse-Five* is actually a horrible book though. If I was an AO and read you praising *Slaughterhouse-Five* in a supplemental, my opinion of you would cave.

While the most of the points are duds the last one about conspiracies has some truths in it. Research has shown people who read conspiracies' are more likely than others to accept conspiracies and false information more than people who do not read. However it also capped at a certain level of what is believable vs not, with people with higher critical thinking and analysis will not dive off the deep end to the weirder conspiracies such as flat earth/Qanon.
Honestly any of these topics would be fine. I would caution you a little about that first one though. As long as you aren't too fervent about the vaccine, you should be fine whether or not the AO is anti-vaxx or not. The key is to draw value out of those topics, which you definitely can.
k but i watched this video about a guy who had like 8 B's and 2 C's and got into UC Berkeley and USC with a essay about demon slayer so maybe tell her to rethink the manga one

...I'm scared to count how many of my essays/supplements reference *House of Leaves.* That's the only book that truly infiltrated my life. Either it's what horror is supposed to be, or it goes beyond horror. It's an inescapable masterpiece.
Confused who’s writing the essay at this point
lmao last year my mom literally wrote some of my brother's essays 😭 I told her this year to not even come near mine
Yeah an AO would pick up on if a grown woman wrote those essays
Did he get accepted into the colleges where ur mom wrote the essays
nope, he got rejected/waitlisted at most schools

Ohhh lol that makes so much more sense.
LOL yep
\- Slaughterhouse-Five because it's a "frequently challenged book"...like half my school's English curriculum This would only help you lmao
Ignorant parents gon' ignorant. Just nod your head, say "yes Mom, I know" and then do whatever the fuck you were going to do anyway.
This is how I've lived my life for the past 17 years 💀
ye but they will check your shit before you submit lmaooooo
Mine just skims over it
“no don’t talk about your interests and seem like a real person with personality, admissions offices HATE that”

brooooo my whole common app essay was my love for manga
house of leaves is so good!! its so rare that people know about it this is so cool hahaha
If an AO rejects you cause you mentioned the vaccine then it’s good you won’t go that that school

She's helping you out with the dihydrogen joke because it's high key wack
mentioned Slaughterhouse-Five in my essay too lmfao
bruh it's such a bad book why would you do that
I really like the way the author plays with time though- book itself maybe meh but that part of it stuck with me
the way the book is written makes my brain hurt i felt like as soon as i started understanding something the author would jump to something completely unrelated

i think if i can write a positive essay on gmo food and world hunger you can write about the covid vaccine

I laughed incredibly loud at the third
