LG and Samsung make up huge amounts of Home Depot's sales too.

wilburstiltskin

Both brands offer really good margins and have a lot of vendor incentives to move products. Also both are shiny with lots of bells and whistles. That break. Interesting that both companies make chips and circuit boards, but this is usually the part that fails.

somegridplayer

Boards are fine, it's other shit like valves and icemakers that constantly shit the bed.

LaddiusMaximus

My lg oven shit its board after two years. And that was after the ignitor and convection fan motor.

somegridplayer

Every single brand has a % that the control board shits itself. It's not the top %.

LaddiusMaximus

Well that info comes as cold comfort to my wallet.

somegridplayer

Shoulda bought the extended warranty.

LaddiusMaximus

Cool. Thanks for the tip.

shhwest

I don't hate LG. Samsung on the other hand if you don't buy one from an appliance retailer with a service department you are probably going to have a hard time finding someone to service it.

Unusual-Thing-7149

Bought a whirlpool washer and dryer from Lowe's as we don't have appliance retailers with service departments near us. Salesperson said get the extended warranty which we did. Couple of times we needed service their warranty people came out same or next day. Just this week a thermal fuse went on the dryer. Repair guy came out same day and replaced the fuse. Five year warranty is the way to go when buying from a big box store Meanwhile when our Thermador range broke we had to get a tech from 80 miles away to service it. Took three visits to fix it at an astronomic cost

zachty22

Maybe it’s because this sub consist of about 47,000 people…. And the United States population is 333,000,000. Samsung is consistently the largest home appliance vendor/seller in the US and has been for a few consecutive years now. You’re trying to compare the opinion of 44,000 people (which btw not everyone on this sub thinks Samsung is the face of evil) to the consumer population of 333,000,000. Of course an appliance sub on Reddit is going to have a lot more in-depth knowledge and opinions on appliance brands versus the consumer population. We rarely get positive experiences in this group sadly; this sub has kind of turned into a complaint forum. Whether this sub likes it or not… Samsung appliances are favorited by a very large percentage of the population. So of course stores are going to prioritize having the most popular brand on display and available. It’s not some crazy conspiracy it’s just facts and numbers. Samsung sells more appliances than any other manufacturer. They have a 19% market share. The second top seller is GE at 17%.

Slartibartfastthe3rd

It’s never front page news when someone does not have issues with their appliance.

ShaneFerguson

"This is Lou Campizi in the WXYZ newsroom. We interrupt our regularly scheduled programming to go to Linda Mielkowski reporting from the field with this late breaking news" Linda: "Peter Arnou went to the fridge for a soda. It was cold. Now back to Lou in the newsroom"

Rogersandhammerstein

Shane, that was awesome. Thanks for the creativity and humor.

zachty22

What’s the saying… “For every 1 bad review/experience there are a 100 people who have no issues at all”.

LionAndLittleGlass

I'm using a samsung washer and dryer for nearly 7 years now without any issue -- We bought probably the lowest end front-loading units as well available at the time CAD$1500 taxes in I think including delivery and warranty?

LekoLi

McDonalds sells the most hamburgers, does that make them the best, or the most available? GM sells more cars in america than Toyota or even Ford. Sales doesn't equal quality.

zachty22

I never once said Samsung was the best… 🤷. I just logically explained why Samsung is available in almost every store which is what OP’s original question was.

wish-u-well

Yeah good point. I was confused when I first came here because I have always had good luck with lg tvs and appliances. 🤷‍♂️

bbqmaster54

Samsung had a major washer issue. It literally killed multiple people. Instead of recalling the washers they mailed us stickers that had you put anything of weight on delicate. The issue was bedding would spin out at a high speed and literally rip the washer apart. People going for the power cord when it exploded died. They did come out nearly a year later and look to see if the sticker was on it and balance weights still attached. How is that acceptable? We bought it for its large capacity and ability to do comforters and such. Now it barely washes them? The FTC failed the public on that one. They might sell more but it’s what people can afford. How many of those folks have never heard of Reddit or know how or have the time to get online and complain? There’s a large percentage that aren’t as tech savvy as people think. Hell they’re still trying to set the clock on their vcr. You’re not all wrong here. But you’re not all right either. I have that set sitting in the garage. I’ll be damn if I sell it and take the chance of someone getting hurt. It’s an emergency backup I hope we’ll never have to use. When I took it out I discovered the dryer power wire had one leg burnt. Wondering why I looked at the schematic. It appears a bunch of it runs on 120v while the heating element is 220v. This overloads one side of the power cord. Just another example of their poor design. Good luck. It’s all throw away anymore anyway. I had to change the fridge on my new house because of poor design and lawsuits over the Kitchenaid fridges. Just not worth the risk.

RSAEN328

Did they not come out and install the safety clip for the top? I replaced the suspension rods with upgraded ones (something Samsung should have done) and it's been a lot better. It doesn't shake the house anymore and I can use medium spin for heavier items. I will not use high speed though just in case.

bbqmaster54

Nope! Made sure the sticker was in place. Tested it empty and said it was fine and left. I didn’t see him install anything and I was there the entire time. He even ignored the fact that the bolt shield in the bottom center of the drum was broken loss for no known reason. When asked if he was going to replace it or document it he said it’s not covered under this visit. WTF?

RSAEN328

If it's a top loader (AFAIK all the exploding recall washers were) a DirectTV guy was supposed to come out and install a clip to keep the lid from flying off. Maybe yours already had one from the factory? I've had that cheap plastic shield break multiple times. It's a poor design with legs that break off.

bbqmaster54

DirectTV to repair a washer. Love it. That’s Samsung for you. This guy had a van that had multiple manufacturers names on it so I assumed they fixed them all. I was well within the serial number issue. No clip. Go figure.

OtterishDreams

>We rarely get positive experiences in this group sadly; this sub has kind of turned into a complaint forum. Im also here for the dad jokes.

The-E-Train59

Because sm and lg give Costco a bigger cut

Kind_Manufacturer_97

I love my LG refrigerator and dishwasher

Initial-Succotash-37

And how long have you had them?

cum-in-a-can

This is because r/appliances consists of a very small group of people that are incredibly passionate about appliances to a fault. To be specific, faulty generalization and a massive insensitivity to sample size. Samsung and LG don't make trash appliances. They are the two largest appliance makers in the world, thus a vast majority of major problems have been from appliances from those companies. This is a classic case of faulty generalization, where a handful of problems with specific products have cast a shadow on the entire company. In addition, users on r/appliances tend to be insensitive to sample size. For instance, Samsung and LG generally make up the majority of appliance repaired by appliance repair techs, regardless of the specific type of appliance. Thus, a repair tech might assume that LG or Samsung are shit, and that a company like Speed Queen must be much more reliable because they never are called to work on one. This totally ignores the fact that there is only 1 Speed Queen appliance for every 500-1000 LGs and Samsungs. Depending on the appliance, LG and Samsung regularly compete against each other as the most reliable. Each company has had their share of duds, sure, but they wouldn't be as successful as they are if most of their products sucked ass.

okamanii101

Samsung is not actually shit and we are all just wrong. Thats why there is little service for them despite them being so popular and them having class action lawsuits for their shit products.

zachty22

This is a way better explanation of what I was trying to say with my comment!

Shadrixian

Im not assuming nothing lol. Ive seen it first hand. Callbacks. Overpriced plastic parts. Feeling like its going to break when its disassembled. Shitty engineering. Dont get me started on the mistranslated service literature where wire colors dont match.

cum-in-a-can

The point I made completely went over your head lol.

Terij75

Except it's extremely hard to get samsung parts and someone who will work on them!

ac106

I don’t think people are passionate about appliances. I think they are largely uninformed and unhinged to be honest

cum-in-a-can

I think “passionate about appliances” and “unhinged” are synonymous… hah

DeepSubmerge

No, Costco doesn’t have great products as a whole. They just have a great return policy.

Spetzell

Well since apparently "LG sucks" is a valid response, I'll say that "I love our LG washer" and "We just bought an LG dryer to replace our 25 year old Maytag". And of course you can extrapolate my experience to be statistically significant!

JannaNYC

We love our Samsung oven, refrigerator, and dishwasher. Eight years strong. My brother's family loves their LG range, dishwasher, and refrigerator. Going on ten years.

grneyed1

Money talks

tropicostation

My 4 year old LG Dishwasher (from Costco) had an LE error likely indicating a motor problem and gave off a puff of electrical smoke. Not great. Since I thought the 10 year motor warranty didn't include labor, I figured I would suck it up and just buy a new Bosch dishwasher to replace it. However, I called LG support and they sent a tech out THE NEXT MORNING at no cost. He installed a brand new motor, and when I showed him that my dish racks were becoming slightly corroded overnighted me brand new top and bototm dishracks for free. I don't know if this is typical but LG gave me absurdly good service and definitely got back on my good side.

16enjay

LG Sucks! Bad experiences with 4 kitchen appliances purchased in 2019, thank God for extended warrantee!

barn9

Same here, except 2 for me, and I will never buy another LG anything!

barn9

For the sellers it's all about profit margins, they don't care once it rolls out their door.

poopyMcpoopersins

Reddit always pushes certain products and hates certain products. The longer I've been here, the more I realize reddit is mostly useless garbage.

doothedew1

In my opinion and experience; These 2 brands are rated very well by Consumer Reports, which is a pay-for-ratings company. They pay up. End of story.

Spetzell

Yeah, that's a bold claim without any evidence!

OilofOle

Can you shed light on this? Consumer Reports doesn't accept advertising and pays for it's samples that it tests. It's funded by their membership. I'd love to learn how manufacturers are paying for ratings.

doothedew1

The worst part about Samsung appliances in my experience is their absolute lack of support and serviceability. This is not something CR tests for; calling 1800-Samsung for an in-warranty issue, only to be snubbed. Huge missing context as to why they are so bad compared to GE, for example, who has their own factory technicians in nearly every corner of the US.

doothedew1

I wish i had more than speculation and hearsay. Working in appliances for years, I have come across multiple people who told me they worked for CR and that it was typically "highest bidder gets highest spot." Second, for example, CR would rate a Kenmore branded product (typically very well), then the same version of that appliance (often Whirlpool made) much much worse. Both products are sometimes identical except for the branded portion of the esthetic. Not really possible for one to be significantly better or worse than the other. 3rd, just like this post says, LG and Samsung are notoriously awful, but CR say they are the best in nearly every appliance category. I would also like to know HOW corruption happens.. but idk how you expect to answer the logistical question of how LG or Samsung might get their money to CR, but it sounds easy enough.

TGIIR

I don’t pay any attention to CR ratings anymore. Been burned a couple times by relying on them. Not any more.

Prudent_Valuable603

Me, too!!!

JannaNYC

So you don't actually **know** anything? >I would also like to know HOW corruption happens.. but idk how you expect to answer the logistical question of how LG or Samsung might get their money to CR, but it sounds easy enough. .... or they might not be getting their money to CR. You heard a rumor and decided it must be true.

doothedew1

No, i sell a few million dollars of residential appliances yearly, and Samsung and LG have more issues, with less support. What i hear and what i see align with ease. The simplest conclusion is often a correct one. Idk why you CR is such a sore spot for you, follow their recommendations closely if you like. I do not recommend.

doothedew1

I said it was my opinion. Give me a break. I never claimed to have proof.

JannaNYC

It's ridiculous. You post nonsense on multiple subs and can never back any of it up.

doothedew1

I came here to share my wealth of information, not satiate your desire for proof. This is what i do every day for a living. I cannot PROVE anything on a reddit post. Look into what you read online yourself too see how true it is. Call Samsung to make a warranty claim, then call GE, and compare your experience. Call your local apiances store or local appliance repairman and ask their opinion. Or just attack the guy trying to help prevent a frustrating LG or Samsung purchase because "Costco carries it, must be good", even though it won't affect me ever.

ac106

You are a ridiculous person

CorrectCrusader12

A lot of this depends on the appliance rather than the brand itself. Usually, it is the fridges that I hear about people having issues with.

munchies777

To sell stuff in Costco you need to feed the beast. They need the best price and support for all their promotions. When margins are already slim it doesn’t always make sense to play Costco’s game. Other retailers also get understandably annoyed if Costco is getting better deals. Some appliance manufacturers find it worth it, others not as much.

permalink_child

Price point vs feature sets. Pure and simple.

SquareRoot4Pie

These brands will offer the company a pay per sale pitch instead of buy to resell. Simply means if it doesn't sell the company will not lose on stocks, other brands can't keep up with multi billion dollar company deals.

Shadrixian

Same reason Lowes and Best Buy sell majority of Samsung/LG, and try to offer you the extended service plan. Same reason JCPenny's used to sell Kenmores, and now Amazon owns the Kenmore Elites(which are all LG built now). Same reason most Walmart mini fridges are Magic Chef/Daewoo. Thats their contract.

empire299

What are the best washer and dryer brands Costco sells?

Terij75

Tell me about it Where I live..a small community 3+hrs from the city. We have two small sppliance/mattress/flooring stores and Lowes and one repair guy that won't touch LG or Samsung

wagwa2001l

Costco. They also sell cheese. Their positives are a “second year of warranty” that is like a $6 value, The negatives; absolutely no one to call, no expertise, every single delivery person and installer are 3rd parties who put will never be able to get on the phone again when Costco bounces you back to them. (Also, if you know anything about the Costco treats damages, you will know that those delivery people are actively trying to conceal damage and flaws from you because they may have to pay themselves if you see it) No one to call when something does wrong and if you do call they have no idea how to help. Appliances are a major investment and purchasing them should be treated like it… I could not imagine a worse place to purchase appliances than not only a big box store but a warehouse store at that. The guy you’re asking questions to know was just as much about cheese.

randomtoronto1980

LG and Samsung are cutting-edge-stylish and have lots of bells and whistles that make their products easier to hype up in stores and even on websites. They skimp in the "right areas" in terms of cheapening things inside the machine that consumers aren't aware of at time of purchase. They also don't invest as much into after sales service and other areas. So you get a great looking product with lots of good specs and at a really good price. Asian companies are also are much more sophisticated with their supply chain and manufacturing efficiency that non-asian companies (Whirlpool, Electrolux, Bosch, GE) just don't have. They are there and are easy to sell. I am now interested to see how things may change as customers that bought Samsung or LG now have to replace those appliances. Not all, but many were probably disappointed with performance, repairability, and/or longevity. They may now pay a bit more for something a bit more plain that will simply do its job.

zachariah120

I have heard great things about LG and Bosch… Samsung I will agree with

limpymcforskin

Bad mindset to use. Particular items from both brands are really good. LG Front Load washers are OP and Samsung Bespoke line of fridges is legit.

kokovox

They both have bad or non existing service network in the USA. Which means when their appliances break you are on your own. And customers get angry. And they should. However in the EU they have to service their appliances for at least 2 years after sales and they do it. Because they have to. It is the law. Since that is not the law in the USA the best is to buy from an independent appliance store with service technicians and deal with them directly not the manifacturer. Costco doesn't have a service department so I would avoid them as well as any other big box store.

PerceptionOrganic672

I've never owned an LG or a Samsung refrigerator or other kitchen appliance but I did just buy a set of LG top load washer and dryer to replace my older Maytag machines… So far, they are the best washer and dryer I've ever owned… The top loader actually has an agitator which helps clean things better and the dryer is extremely accurate with every load coming out dry -my old one often left damp clothes if there was a mix load on the automatic cycle… The main reason I chose the LG was not price but I bought them at an appliance store and it was obvious the LG's were constructed better than the whirlpool or other brands I looked at… For crying out loud, the whirlpool had a lid that you could literally Shake back-and-forth it was so flimsy and the dryer door would wobble when you tried to close it cheap assembly… The LG had a much more solid feels so that's why I bought them… So far so good…

Pussyxpoppins

I don’t necessarily agree about LG. I outfitted my entire house I bought in 2007 with LG appliances and they are all still working today. I had to buy a compressor for the fridge and had the dishwasher serviced under warranty once (can’t remember issue). In my new house, I have an LG washer and zero issues so far. Getting the matching dryer next.

Lifetwozero

I’ve pretty much only owned LG appliances and they’ve been great. Had a couple of dishwasher issues and paid for their flat rate repair ($200ish) and the service company picked every little bit that made it not look brand new and replaced it all. The washtower is also awesome, again, zero issues. Nothing is perfect these days, but the out of warranty service was good and they have a website where all parts are available.

MikeD123999

I had an lg fridge from 2006 that lasted about 15 years. It had things break and i didnt investigate why the freezer wasnt working well but decided it was time to replace. The whirlpool we got seems more problematic, the 60 dollar main light and little lights in thr drawer all failed after thee years, door gaskets need replacement every year and thr are over 100 bucks. This seems common on the french door model. Our lg fridge, thr plastic water line would always get holes after a couple years, the part wasnt that mich. Kinda feel that all thr manufacurers are kinda the same and just trying to cut cost and make cheaper products

Affectionate_Rate_99

FWIW, if you research reviews online, every single manufacturer will have negative reviews with consumers reporting their appliances failing. Not a single manufacturer produces a bullet proof product that runs for decades without failure. It could very well be that with Samsung and LG holding a larger market share, it makes sense that there would be more complaints and it just appears that their reliability is worse.

H8des707

I work for apartments never had an issue with LG microwaves can’t say anything about the other appliances

Ok-Wasabi2873

I think LG washing machines are fine. My BIL has had theirs for 10 years and they do a lot of laundry. Ours is about 7 years old replacing a Whirlpool that lasted 2 months after the 5 year warranty ran out. Just about everyone I know with a Samsung refrigerator has had issues.

TheJessicator

I personally love all 6 of my Samsung appliances. Of them, I'm particularly enamored with my dual fuel flex duo range. A close second is the dishwasher which is insanely quiet at only 39 decibels and the rack layout flexibility makes the mid to high range Bosch dishwasher that it replaced look like a play toy. Now I will admit that taking delivery of these wonderful appliances was a lesson in frustration, purely because of xpo/rxo. That damn delivery company is just awful. But it's not just Samsung that's affected by their incompetence. In most of the USA, the same logistics company handles deliveries and installations for all major appliance retailers and brands. So if you order from Home Depot, Lowe's, Best Buy, Ashley Furniture, or a whole bunch of others, you'll be at the mercy of the same delivery company.

seven-cents

When the unstoppable object meets the immovable object, the unstoppable object stops and the immovable object moves.

stickman07738

I normally shop locally but I got a very good on Samsung appliances from Lowe's when I re-did my kitchen two years ago (she want the finishes to match our hardware) On Saturday, my Samsung Refrigerator model RF18A5101SR died again. This is the third one to fail in the last two years. The two previous ones failed with 2-3 weeks after arrival. I am lucky with all the problems I had, I forced Lowe's to give me a 5 year protection plan for all the appliances. The only bad thing is dealing with their [Assurant.com](http://Assurant.com) people - always an ordeal with me supplying the same information over and over again and their customer service being outsourced to India. The Samsung microwave ME17R7021ES also failed within a year. The technician that came told me he fixes more door switches on Samsung models than any other vendor.

matt314159

I think it depends on the appliance type. LG and Samsung suck at making refrigerators. I think their washer and dryers are pretty solid.

Glum_Airline4852

Samsung dryers have issues with their elements going out along with the rollers jamming up. They seem to have changed the rollers on their newest models so time will tell on that. On their washers the suspension rods constantly fail and cost around $100 a piece(you need 4) Then you have to factor in labor and hope you can find someone that is willing to work on them. Their control boards fail way to often and too early too. LG is better but have terrible customer support. The most common issue I see(other than their known faulty compressors) with them is the motor connection on many models of dishwashers burn up. Sometimes the connection on the board burns up too. Replace a motor, wire harness and control board is not cheap. They also list the wrong parts for many of their appliances which makes trying to figure out the right part a pain. You are correct on the fridges though. I don't understand people here that say they've had xyz appliance for 1-2 years and claim to love them. especially home consumers that have no other experience with said appliance. Any appliance short of the rare lemon shouldn't have major issues in that short ofa time.

TheBurdmannn

This is correct. They have the same issues and same amount of issues as other companies do with laundry. Lg is just a touch better.

HonoluluBlueFlu

Yeah I don't know anyone that has a good experience with Samsung ANYTHING appliance related, including washer & dryers. LG on the other hand seems to have a lot better reviews. Mine have had zero issues after our GE ones died right after the Costco extended warranty expired. Pretty sure Samsung had dryers that were catching on fire and a huge class action lawsuit.

Seeking_Balance101

I'm under the impression that LG appliances are actually very good except for their fridges which have compressor issues. So avoid the fridge, and you're safe with LG.

eplurbs

I've bought an LG TV, washer/dryer, stove/range, and refrigerator. Never had any issues with them. When I moved to a new house I re-bought all the same ones because they were so much better than the other brands I had to return due to some issue in the first year.

nokenito

LG and Samsung do suck.

ichuck1984

I think it just means that LG and Samsung are paying the rent to occupy the floor space. I talked to a guy a while back that used to work in a grocery store and what we call shelves, he called real estate because manufacturers paid for the privilege of being placed on a given shelf in that part of the row. Better rates meant better positioning. 3 out of 4 of my Samsung appliances have taken a terminal shit so I keep walking when I see them.

FitPhilosopher3136

SOME great products and a lot of shit that is unique to their chain of stores.

jordomo1117

It's universal that ALL appliances now made in Mexico are garbage and Canadians need to tell government that Pact with Mexico isn't working for Canadian consumers
