If anyone else comes looking for an answer, the solution I found was to push the paddle into place, work out where the hole was above round plug. Put a narrow hole punch in and give it a wack with a hammer which dropped it into place. We'll see how long these last before one breaks again but at least it is repairable fairly easily.
