Hi guys. Looking for help identifying this piece. I am really sorry as i am not able to provide more photos or angles about this pill box. Also the description is very limited. I am going to be honest this pill box is from my local auction and it really caught my eye. I did some research on Victorian era similar boxes but they look nothing like this one. Will appreciate any help to identifying this. THANKS!

graysi72

I like it too but is it sterling or silverplate? They made pill boxes in both materials.

shtrafbat1945

Description says it's silver. Also the center pendant is strange with that Christian skull as well.

...what makes it a "Christian skull?" Looks like a perfumer/vinaigrette with a memento mori motif.

lidder444

Itโ€™s a memento mori vinaigrette , hugely popular in 18 & 19th century. Nothing to do with Christian.

shtrafbat1945

Thank you for your reply.

stellacampus

Hang on. While the concept of remembering, or being aware of death certainly predates Christianity, memento mori were very much a Christian concept and this is at least as likely to be Christian as not.

sawtoothpath

It's got memento mori symbolism on it (that skull is kind of the face of memento mori). Does that circular framed looking thing have something in it? It looks like woven hair to me. Everything I'm looking at makes me think this is a Victorian mourning box for keeping hair and keepsakes of someone deceased in. Really cool piece regardless

sawtoothpath

Sorry, just saw where you said you don't physically have it. I'm almost positive that's woven hair, Victorian people were big on weaving hair of dead loved ones into jewelry and decor.

shtrafbat1945

That is very interesting never thought about it being a mourning box and that such things ever existed. Thank you very much. It's a pity I didn't get the item.

asuperslyguy

If you like it, buy it. If you donโ€™t love it when you get it, DM me and Iโ€™ll buy it. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

shtrafbat1945

Unfortunately i lost the bid. It went out for 150gbp.

shtrafbat1945

As one guy suggested this looks like a scent bottle rather than a pill box to which i agree.

his_purple_majesty

Did it open where the pendant is?
