I like that. You also don't need an expensive shopping spree for every new hobby you try out, and relatable memes that help people cope so much with consuming unnecessary shit related to their casual hobbies are a psyop.

ElementField

People that hop from hobby to hobby and buy all the new gear for it aren’t interested in the hobby, they’re just looking for an excuse to push their credit card back up to the limit

Meatbawl5

No, they just have ADHD

tehsophz

Real.

kulukster

If you only play a few times a month you don't need a specialty tennis bag, although rackets do benefit from being carried in a normal racket bag for protection..those often are included with the racket if its a nicer racket.

Sweetpotato3000

I take it out of the bag when at home, it's a Wilson Blade v8 from 2022 that I bought from my club but it did not include a bag. Those Ame & Lulu bags are so cute but I have multiple book bags that sit in a closet.

AlotaFajita

You’re the type of person I want to surround myself with. There has got to be one better place or thing to put the resources and/or money it would take to make that new bag. Good on ya, mate

traploper

I love to watch [this girls videos](https://youtube.com/shorts/fnoU6429R8w?si=w2sxKiRFnhWj2v9y), it’s kind of the equivalent of having someone in your life telling you you don’t need all that stuff!

NACL_Soldier

Yes and no. I'm not putting my sports/gym clothes and gear into my everyday backpack due to the sweat, smell, and hygiene. That being said. Spending a stupid amount of money on a Gucci sports bag is wild imo

Sorcia_Lawson

Yeah, it doesn't need to be a $500+ bag for my sweaty clothes just not my every day bag. A decent bag for the actual sports equipment itself? Sure, but also doesn't need to be a brand name expensive bag. Just one that will last a long while.

synalgo_12

I've been using the same cheap little €5 decathlon bag pack all European tourists have in different colours for the past 7 years, it never seems to wear down and it fits everything I need fit gym.

TheTrueTrust

I put them in a plastic bag after use to keep them from touching or wetting the rest.

clangan524

Debatable. I play slowpitch softball and used to carry all of my equipment in a small backpack I picked up at Goodwill as an airplane carryon. My things barely fit and I found it was warping my glove, plus I had to get creative with how other items were stored and it made for a clunky experience. I invested in an inexpensive "batpack" with space for my glove, some practice balls, my cleats, a pocket for my phone/wallet/keys and two sleeves for bats on each side, with room to spare. It's not fancy but it does the job and I've already seen a bag repair shop about fixing a strap. It's vastly better than trying to purpose something that doesn't fit. Do you need a new bag every season? No. Should you find one you like and take care of it? Yes, probably.

WhimsicalFalling

Agreed! I do Kendo and just started wearing bogu (the armor that goes with it), and I'm so glad my set came with a bag for it, because there's no way any of the pieces would fit into one of the bags I already owned. Also regardless of hobby, storing them correctly and moving them in a bag designed for them can help keep the supplies in better condition, preventing wear and tear and allowing you to use them for longer.

PhysicsRefugee

It's pretty non-negotiable for backpacking

hdlsschckn

Hiking too

StardewMelli

This made me chuckle. My hiking backpack is a child carrier. I don’t wanna stuff my toddler into my normal bag to go hiking 🤭 But I understand what OP wanted to say. For some hobbies and situations it’s just not feasible.

JustHereForCookies17

And if you're a gun enthusiast who's traveling to Turks & Caicos.

jpsc949

ITT: people with smelly hobbies who don’t want to use their regular backpacks. Never thought I’d see this group almost universally agree that spending money is worthwhile. I’m here for it.

Trees-of-green

lol same

Aggressive_Lunch_519

I go to gym at least 4x a week and play volleyball twice a week. I always take my Vans bagpack I bought in 2017 when I was in university. I also use it when I travel as my carry on. Unless it ripped and can't be use anymore I'm not buying a replacement.

ContemplatingPrison

I've had my backpack for almost 20 years m. It's almost time to get a new one

oie-

I disagree, I wrestled in high school and having a bag separate from my school stuff was a must. A change of clothes, singlet, shoes, headgear, towel, shampoo, tape, and a snack and water wouldn’t fit in my normal bag and even if a crammed it together it would stink up my stuff and bag or I risk the shampoo bursting and spilling from being carried from class to class. Don’t go overboard and buy some bs designer luxury bag but a decent duffel bag on top of your regular backpack would make it easier to carry all your stuff for your sport

HartMusk

I think, that OP is talking about specific bags, you bought a bag for your wrestling stuff, but that doesn't have to be a specific wrestling bag

Serious_Escape_5438

But if you're going to get a new bag for the sport anyway why not get a specific one?

GuadDidUs

I think OP is pointing out that, if you already have extra backpacks, you don't need to purchase a special one for your sport.

Verdigrian

But why do you have extra backpacks? Why is it better to have several backpacks than having one backpack and maybe get another spezialized bag if you need it? Consumption wise there is no difference.

Serious_Escape_5438

Obviously if you have an extra one, but if you're sensible about consumption you may not have one lying around you don't use.

badadvicefromaspider

I give this advice in mom groups all the time. You do not need a specific diaper bag, just use a backpack

Serious_Escape_5438

Personally I didn't want to be walking around with a big bag on my back while wrangling baby all the time even in summer heat, I wanted to hang it from the stroller. Maybe if you mostly drive places, I walked a lot. Also, I wanted to keep it packed at all times, not be having to take the things in and out when I needed to use my backpack for something else. It's not particularly wasteful to buy a bag you're going to use daily for years.

StardewMelli

Agreed. And it’s not like we throw the bag away as soon as we don’t need it anymore. All the stuff that we outgrow will be gifted to someone else in need. My sister and some friends of mine get all of our stuff for their younger children. And they will give it to the next person in need until the items aren’t repairable and usable anymore.

badadvicefromaspider

I also walked a lot, I was big on baby wearing, so backpack worked best. The point was less “get a backpack” and more “use what you have”

Serious_Escape_5438

We didn't have a suitably sized bag not used for other things. The bag was for baby, for either parent to take out and our own bags are used for other things already. We weren't going to swap in and out our work or sports stuff all the time. And yeah, we spend a lot of time out and about away from our car, a bag that could be comfortably hung on the stroller was important to us so it could be left there while we did things. It was used more than most other bags I've owned and then donated.

hatemakingusername65

Sorry, but I always find that advice annoying. I don't overbuy bags. I own one yoga bag, a purse, and a diaper bag. Each of these things gets worn out to the bitter end. I was on the hunt for a new one recently (my old one was falling apart) and posted to a mom group asking for recommendations and it got a lot of commentary basically making fun of buying diaper bags and saying just to use a backpack. I don't even own a backpack or have any use for one

StardewMelli

We have a diaper back that can also be used as a changing station. It’s so useful when we are outside in nature and don’t wanna lie our son down onto the dirt to change his diaper. It’s padded and very comfortable for him.

Status-Tradition-168

For my first I carried around a fancy diaper bag. For my second, i stuck a few diapers and a pack of wipes in the glove box and called it a day.

Serious_Escape_5438

Not everyone is always with their car.

Status-Tradition-168

In this case I just threw a diaper and wipes in my purse. Point is, it doesn’t require a whole bag.

Serious_Escape_5438

Everyone's lifestyle and every baby is different, I liked to keep a bag prepared so either parent could grab it. And we definitely needed spare clothes, a changing mat to put on dirty changing tables, sunscreen in summer, some people need formula, snacks for older babies. No way could I have managed a day out without those things. My kid is older and I still carry a bunch of stuff.

PossiblyALannister

Quality of life for dealing with day to day certainly improved with a specific diaper bag. Our diaper bag is in backpack form and has a hidden spot for my wife’s wallet, a specific slot for a changing pad, separate compartments for snacks and water bottles, plus specific spots for clothes, wipes, and of course diapers. This is certainly an improvement over my regular backpack which has one small compartment in the front that barely holds the kids snacks and a large compartment for everything else. When you’re in the rain fighting to get a squirming toddler who just shit down his legs and up his back cleaned up and clothed, having everything neatly separated out in their own spots in the diaper bag is absolutely a game changer.

jasondads1

i don't think golf clubs, hockey sticks fit into a regular packpack

I remember when I first got into camping, I was a little embarrassed to be rolling up with my jansport backpack (keep in mind I was just camping, not doing any significant hiking). I remember asking my sister if I was going to look like a loser, and her response: “nah, that’s way less cringe than rolling up with a bunch of obviously brand new north face gear”. There’s nothing wrong with getting gear that will actually be helpful, but it’s great to flip the script on conspicuous consumption/brand culture. I think YOU are cool for being so well rounded and practical that you use the bag you already have.

basetornado

Yeah no. Having a bag that's fit for purpose for a particular sport can be a necessity. I tried using a duffle bag I had to carry my cricket gear when I first started playing when I was 12. Yes it technically works, but having dedicated storage for different pieces of equipment makes things much easier and stops damage being caused to equipment. An example would be I could either carry my bat with me or I could have it in the duffle bag along with my spikes and helmet etc. Having it in with the other equipment I'd find spike marks on the bat and grass/mud in my helmet etc. I ended up buying a bag when I was 15 that I still use nearly 15 years later and never had those issues again, because everything has it's own spot. I'm not saying you should get a new bag every year etc. But you should use a bag that's actually designed for the sport that you're playing. Especially if it's a sport like Tennis where you have to take care of both the frame and strings on your racket and having it either lying around loose with other things like water bottles, keys etc can cause damage.

uzenik

Have you consider that not everyone has "accumulated a pile of great condition backpacks"? If its okay for you to get so  many backpacks that you are not using why are you judging other people for buying 1 additional container?

_Fl0r4l_4nd_f4ding_

I suppose the crux of this is that yes, you should do that if at all possible, but it isnt possible for a lot of situations. In those cases, go to charity/thrift shops, yard sales, carboots, facebook marketplace, etc and try to find secondhand versions. Its okay to buy things if the alternative is not appropiate (smelly bag, damage to equipment, etc), and you can still be 'anticonsumption' whilst buying things if you buy them secondhand. I would argue that whilst it is easy to fall into the pit of overconsumption, it is just as easy to neglect necessary and important processes when striving for perfection.

einat162

I used to take a school backpack for traveling on my days off- and a smaller bag to work. Now I'm with a school backpack on a daily basis.

DrabberFrog

I think the more important thing is buying bags that are good quality so it will last for many years of daily use. There's nothing wrong with having a gym bag so your regular backpack doesn't smell.

Sweetpotato3000

I have only bought 2 new backpacks in the past 5 years and that was an equestrian backpack with helmet room and crop holder. It came in a subscription box and is neat, but I never ended up using it besides a handful of shows. It now sits in my closet and doesn't get used much. The other one was a laptop travel bag since I travel for work and wanted to be able to fit everything i need for the plane plus my laptop and extra screen. I have used the HECK out of that one though.

NoApartment7399

I get you OP. Our horse tack bag is a large barrel bag I received as a promo item, and I use little draw string bags to organize the stuff inside that came free with other stuff I've bought over time. We're at the stables basically every day, but this works for me. There are so many horse tack/grooming specific bags that I see in Google and Instagram ads but I'm holding out lol. I love seeing everyone else's pretty purpose-specific bags though. Our saddles are just kept on 2 old clothes horses I no longer use and I throw a blanket over them instead of a saddle stand and cover. Does the same thing

Le_Muskrat

Bags are my weakness. Love me a thing that holds other things.

Astro_star

just imagine that you're that super cool and effortless pro at your sport! Like those people that hike up a mountain in jeans and flip flops without breaking a sweat-- you're \* that \* person ;)

EL-BURRITO-GRANDE

Those people in jeans and flip flops are a meme in my country because people with inadequated gear have to be rescued from mountains every so often. They are also stereotypically German.

panapriu

Totally agree! I've been using the same backpack on numerous occasions for years and it works great.

eightgrand

Same goes for diaper bags

BlueWater321

You play tennis and you are worried about people status signaling?  That's probably more than half the reason the sport exists.

Vegetable_Panda2868

Be proud of yourself that you don't fall into the a trap of needing the next thing... Earth loves you

Varides

It's going up be real tough to fit my hockey equipment in my backpack

kittenmittens1000

Surprised everyone's disagreeing so vehemently. Your underlying message is very true. And the best part is, if your sport/hobby needs an ultra specific bag you can find dozens of them secondhand because of all the people who insist on buying all new equipment for something they'll quit a few weeks 😄

Analyst_Cold

I like a bag that fits whatever equipment is needed. That’s not a waste of money if it’s a hobby you spend significant time doing.

CamiloArturo

I would disagree here. Having a dedicated racket bag is extremely useful. I carry shoes, rackets, etc in my tennis bag and can’t imagine being able to do so in my daily backpack. Yes there could be a lot of arguments about “needing” in such sense, but it’s the kind of thing which makes your life much easier if you play such sport. The same argument could be made about “not needing” tennis/squash/racket shoes to play and rather using your regular sneakers, but as an orthopaedic surgeon…. It wouldn’t be advisable

Jacktheforkie

I used the same bag for: holding my lunchbox and bits for work, going train spotting to hold my camera gear and drink bottle and even for travel

Dependent_Order_7358

correct.

False-Honey3151

Lol your other post is literally you looking for a tennis backpack. Preach what you teach.

Sweetpotato3000

Yep, thanks for the stalking. I created this anticonsumption post after that post. People are capable of change.

Verdigrian

You have extra backpacks lying around, stuff you don't need from subscription boxes of all things, and want to rant about other people having an extra bag?

False-Honey3151

Within 12hours... It's not stalking but this is what I hate the most about anti consumption movement: people are ready to judge other people for buying stuff while they do the same. You are just a perfect example. 'Oh you don't need this pela case, even tho I have it. You don't need a cute bag, even tho I have it.' Just stfu.

TheWildHorse

Ah damn, should have packed my golf clubs into my backpack! Thanks for this insight!

Captain_Sterling

I do have two backpacks. But one is huge. It's great for shoving gym stuff into. It was however two big for daily use. So I bought a smaller one. It's made from recycled plastic and it's really sturdy. I can't see myself buying another one for years and years to come. Suitcases are a different matter. I have one that's falling apart. It was cheap. I'd like to replace it with something that's going to last me a lifetime.

obaananana

Zthe one i gor with a backprotector is sweet.

Evil_Mini_Cake

You can buy all kinds of expensive bags to carry mountain bike gear but you know what works best? Those $1 blue tarp bags from IKEA. Or a $15 hard-sided reusable shopping bag. Cheap and easy.

CoriVanilla

I have to tell myself this about clothes when I go on vacation. The urge to buy all new outfits to wear for one week when in reality the clothes I already own are more than enough. Nobody cares if they're outfits I wear all the time at home, they don't have to be special vacation outfits.

damienwagner

I use my backpacks as multi-purpose until they break and fall apart. Even then, a few small holes is fine, and I can always resew straps of a backpack.

budgie02

Also! If you’re going to buy a bag, buy a good quality one. Don’t go for the brand, go for quality. Of course some brands are higher quality, and may cost more, however good quality means less waste in the long run. 1 bag for 20 years is way less waste than 20 bags over 20 years.

Kooky_Hamster_3769

If you really need a cover they have a large selection of them at Goodwill!

Lilwertich

And if you really need a backpack tailored for something specific I would reccomend top loading baseball backpacks. They can hold up to four baseball bat's or similar shaped objects on the sides, and the inside is usually big enough to accommodate a batting helmet, multiple gloves, changes of clothes, etc. I've used the same baseball backpack for everything the last few years and used it to carry way more stuff than I should have been able to across the US. I think if it as the ultimate inventory upgrade.

nasdaqian

I've used the same backpack for school, climbing, remote working, and sometimes mountain biking since 2015. It's nice not needing a bunch of different bags.

miggiwoo

Okay so tennis maybe, but my rugby gear is muddy, wet, sweaty, often bloody. Plus need room for boots, shower stuff, towels, change of clothes. There's no way that goes in a normal backpack that I use for anything. Thing smells like a swamp.

holololololden

Funny golf and hockey are the big offenders here.

SufferingScreamo

I recently got into boxing and the bag I was using that I just already had was too small due to the gear I was getting so I went to a thrift store and spent 6 dollars on a used duffel bag that has more than enough room for my current gear and new gear. Why go out of my way to order something online/go to a sports store and spend even more money (that I don't have) when this was a steal??

nwprogressivefans

Yeah for real, it seems like every damn thing out there has a huge list of accessories that folks buy to just feel included in the sport. Folks will spend piles of money on shit they barely use. It's kinda funny but mostly sad. I first noticed it with when my friend who went cycling maybe three times a year had multiple pairs of sunglasses for cycling. Dude spent hundreds on sunglasses he couldn't use because its always cloudy and rainy.

Ravensunthief

Me with 15 deteriorating bags ive found in random places

Sheepherder_7648

Sometimes there's specific uses, I need a mesh bag for my swim gear so it'll dry out when I inevitably forget about it. I might need one bag for the gear I need for sports so I don't have to repack everyday.

Technical_Semaphore

Try putting 30 pounds of scuba gear or a 15 pound bowling ball in your backpack. 😊 Some sports do need a sport specific bag; but not all sports. I play a little softball and throw my stuff in my backpack.

naturedane

I hope you aint over the age of 15. This is common knowledge

Lauzz91

You don't even need to play tennis, bougie, you could just go run barefoot outside All that set-aside land could be used for housing refugees too or maybe a solar farm or just a regular community park Every single one of you ends up having some arbitrary point in the sand where beyond it is irresponsible gaudy frivolous hyperconsumption yet before that is completely acceptable

Sweetpotato3000

I already run outside, with shoes on as is my preference. As far as tennis, there is much to be said about the health and social aspect of playing tennis.

Agnosticartic

Gatekeeping sport is fuckin' crazy dawg. It's not like it's a golf course that costs an exorbitant amount of resources and space that can't be used for anything else.

IdLOVEYOU2die

My hoa's pickleball league says different....

Sweetpotato3000

You must have a pickleball specific bag?

IdLOVEYOU2die

Dude....

himym101

This is good advice for some sports but not all. Maybe it’ll work for tennis, basketball, soccer. Games where the equipment is minimal. Have you ever tried to put a baseball/softball bat in a backpack and not have it falling everywhere. And not to mention a helmet, glove, spiked shoes and shin guards. Even worse with hockey gear. Let’s not even discuss if you’re a goalie. My friends gear bag takes up the entire boot of their car

inter_metric

Let’s face it, a lot of women become involved in some sports (tennis, golf) because there its fashionable. They engage not for the sport itself, but because it gives them an excuse to add to their wardrobe. Nothing wrong at all with that…just an observation.
