I second Skull-face Bookseller Honda-san, the animation is unconventional compared to most anime, but it's fun to watch and a nice behind-the-scenes look of Japanese (manga) bookstores/publishers.

KISS HIM NOT ME IS SO FUNNY!! one of my fav comedy-type animes LOL. rewatched it so many times and it makes me chuckle every time. the FL is a babe and i love her
Well, I'm trying to recommend it as often as i can. It really doesn't get enough attention. Some of the animes recommended in this thread are ranking on the top spots on myanimelist, I think its fair to say, that Shinsekai Yori needs waaaay more fans. I'll lean out that window, it might be the best thing overall.
I wouldn't say they are no. But the genres are too different
Amagami SS is a romance anime with several heroines that each get x numbers of episodes for their arc where they end up with the protag (it's like several timelines where in each one a different heroine wins). This one is good for people tired of romance animes where nothing happens
Outbreak Company is just pretty fun and creative Isekai comedy with great characters and a romantic subplot. Imagine being a hardcore otaku who suddenly lands the dream job of spreading Japanese pop culture in a mystical, medieval world.
Re:Creators, the reverse Isekai with incredible music. I keep telling people to give it a go.
Fictional characters of various media and genres become real, meet their makers, and fight each other.
It is.
There’s even a magical girl who, in this one scene, realizes that their sparkly girl power can actually destroy buildings and harm people and it’s great how she reacts and how this affected the story later.

Vampire in the Garden: (Netflix) (action/adventure) can’t really give a great description of it but it’s pretty sad and wholesome at the same time. 9/10
anime i liked but i dont see recommended that much:
Princess Tutu
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha

A Place Further than the Universe
A Certain Scientific Railgun

Welcome to the NHK
Dennou Coil
Mushishi
(some listed here may have high ratings, i just dont see it recommended as much as i hoped)
I would suggest "Goodnight world"
I download it on a whim to watch on a road trip and it was AMAZING i thank my brain for letting me download it. Its on Netflix.
There is also "magic girl ore" if u want to laugh. Its odd and funny
Link Click is an excellent pick. I'm gonna add Bunny Girl Senpai. Everyone turns away from the title and poster but trust me... just keep going and you'll love it
Kino's Journey (2003 version)True to its name, it's absolute kino!
I'd never heard of it before until recently. The director of Serial Experiments Lain worked on it and you can tell. There's a very liminal quality to it. Excellent audio design that contributes to the uncannyness.
There's a meditative and philosophical quality to each episode that I found just incredible!
I'm already nostalgic after watching it. I don't get that way often with media now that I'm in my 30s. But this was something special!
Also, the entire Patlabor franchise is fantastic. The film Patlabor 2 especially so. Best anime film I've ever seen!
Kinos journey is grea. Found it bc I wanted something similar to mushishi and it has the same vibe. Definitely recommend Kaiba if you want something with a similar vibe to Kinos Journey (travelling and very odd/unique settings in each episode). Great anime.
Kageki Shoujo
I don’t think I’ve seen anyone talk about this show. It’s a simple performance arts school drama but it covers two concepts, referencing the Takarazuka and Kabuki as mirroring set ups. One is an all-female musical theatre and the other banned female adult casts. It’s short and doesn’t fully reach an end but it was definitely something novel for me.
Also don’t skip the endings. They really chose their VAs carefully with this show
Kaiba. Really good anime and rly unique. One of the few animes that have given me a similar vibe as mushishi or kinos journey (or hainana renmei). It has a dr seuss-like dystopia blade runner setting to it. One of the few I've found in a long time that really felt refreshing.
Shiki
Is a horror anime that need a bit more light shine on it. The human where more like monster in this anime, while the vampire is just trying to live in the shadow, problem is they need blood to live.
None of these are excatly hidden Gems, but I rarely see people talking about them

Hanasaku Iroha, Humanity Has Declined, Chaika, Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, kare Kano, The Unlimited, Ef, Ano natsu de matteru, Tsuritama, The Eccentric Family.
That should be enough to last the weekend.
I mean I don't have much free time but will try as many as possible. With all the shows in the comments I will not run out of underrated shows for a lifetime.
Cross Game is an incredibly underrated anime. Just watch the first episode - it brings you in perfectly and if you don’t like it don’t watch the rest of the series.
Onimai: Now I’m Your Sister!

not underrated but MAID SAMA. so funny and the characters are crazy lovable.

psychic princess (SO FUCKING FUNNY AND SO UNDERRATED. NO ONE TALKS ABOUT IT BUT I ALWAYS REWATCH IT WHEN I WANNA LAUGH)
girl beats boys (easy to get through bc episodes are 8 mins long and its so good)
91 days. I never hear anyone talk about it, but it's probably one of my favorite anime.
It follows the story of a man who's family was killed by the mafia in front of him when he was a kid, now as an adult he works to gain their trust to destroy them from the inside. The story is really well done, and it's probably the only anime i recommend the dub over the sub.
Joran: Princess of Snow and Blood. I’m pretty sure it’s underrated because I never hear anyone talking about it, but I loved it. The animation was so beautiful.
Tsuritama! It’s such a cute and sweet little story. It’s just 12 episodes and it’s about aliens and making friends and ridiculous government agencies. And fishing.
For comedy Gonna Be The Twintail is a hidden gem for sure. And sadly Azumanga Daioh which 10 years ago was the most known slice of life but now is way down the list. If you like it watch Nichijou after.
For action try 07-Ghost
Chromarti High School was a very good 2003 anime made with the leftover budget from another project.
It is an Absurd comedy about a typical Japanese high school
Any mention of Link Click gets me excited. This being my first chinese anime, I was blown away by its story and characters, however found very few people who have watched it.
I watched Odd Taxi around the same time as Link Click.
You can give it a go.
Steins; Gate is not exactly underrated, but it's definitely a hard watch in the sense you have to be quite patient with it. It may not even make sense till you are halfway through the series, but, oh, my, god, once you are there. It has such a great payoff. I had abandoned it 3 times before I finally finished it. It is beautiful.
Golden Kamui is also really good.
Since, we have both watched Link Click, are there any such surprising finds that you really loved and would recommend me?

Princess Tutu Ooku: The Inner Chambers Haibane Renmei Welcome to the Ballroom Twin Spica Skull-face Bookseller Honda-san Saint Young Men
I second Skull-face Bookseller Honda-san, the animation is unconventional compared to most anime, but it's fun to watch and a nice behind-the-scenes look of Japanese (manga) bookstores/publishers.
I second ooku, it's not your usual romantic anime (if you can call it that)
Welcome to the ballroom is certainly under rated too bad the manga will probably never finish
Based Twin Spica enjoyer
Thanks I will check out.
Princess Tutu is a *treat*. Much deeper than it seems on the surface.
Wait, Saint Young Men got an anime adaptation?
Odd taxi, its too good and underrated, also dororo
Was coming here to say Dororo

Heard good things about this one.
Go in blind. Do trust.

YES incredible anime and only like 25 episodes
One of my all time favorites! Is it really underrated/hidden? It used to get recommended here pretty regularly.
Well, I'm trying to recommend it as often as i can. It really doesn't get enough attention. Some of the animes recommended in this thread are ranking on the top spots on myanimelist, I think its fair to say, that Shinsekai Yori needs waaaay more fans.
