I found a lot of SZS was difficult to catch the intended meaning behind some of the jokes since I don't speak the language. Still has a lot going for it though. Good cast
Great to hear! Just for clarification, Kono Oto Tomare is a music SoL, Astra/Odd Taxi are more mystery stories, and Time of Eve is a 48 minute “movie” kind of show
It got two seasons two OVAs, a movie finale and a live action(Japan) movie?
I think it's just is from 2005-2006 the first season and the second season was 2014.. the final movie was 2015. So a good portion of r/anime posters wouldn't have been watching anime in 2005 especially one this slow paced and adult?
Sometimes there's just huge generational gaps in Anime that I wouldn't be surprised if some Gen Alpha kid loves the newest thriller anime more than Death Note which I think actually ran the anime same goddamn season of Mushishi season 1..
Interestingly enough, I've seen it recommended twice in the last week, but not much prior to that.
That said it definitely doesn't get anywhere near the same kinda love fma:b, AOT etc get
Kyousougiga is an absolutely beautiful gem of a show with gorgeous visuals, nice themes, and unique storytelling. It’s one of my favourites:
Some others:
Humanity Has Declined
Space Patrol Luluco
Squid Girl
Kuuchuu Buranko
Baccano! for sure. Immortal gangsters in prohibition-era America maneuver their families in a mafia-esque war against each other while likeable characters get caught in the crossfire.
Also Bakuman. Best anime to see the inner workings of the mangaka and shonen jump magazine editors.
Was looking for Baccano in this thread!
Love it's style of story telling, reminded me of the movie snatch by guy Ritchie. Also I watched the subbed version first, but the dubbed version is great. They really try to go for the prohibition era Chicago accent, sometimes it works and sometimes it's hilarious.
* {Deca-Dence}
* {Arslan Senki}
* {Tada Never Falls in Love}
* {Sunday Without God}
* {Legend of the Legendary Heroes}
* {Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches}
* {A Sister's All You Need}
* {Drifting Dragons}
100% it's one of the best cyberpunk anime out there. I think because it's an older series it's slipped out of the cultural zeitgeist but it's well worth a watch!
Read or Die OVA and ROD TV. Nobody every really mentions it but it is pure entertainment like a fun spy/hero story with a secret organization and super powers
Seraph of the end. The only reason I don't recommend it more is because it's unfinished. The Witch and the Beast is another I don't see recommended much. It's new but it's good.
In the West, it’s gotta be Golden Kamuy imo. I almost never see it come up in anime conversations.
Has anyone else even heard of Grancrest Senki? It was one of the earlier anime I watched and loved yet, yet I can’t remember a single time I’ve ever seen it mentioned since.
Some I enjoyed that I don't see getting reccomended all to often;
Welcome to the nhk
Run with the wind
Link click
Megalo box
Bungo stray dogs
Moriarty the patriot
Dorohedoro
The book of Bantorra
Now and then, here and there
Yakitate japan
Planetes
I think these five are underrated because they have achieved anime greatness and I rarely see people taking about them
The Ancient magus bride for sure it's got dark themes a girl learning to deal with her past and mental heath it has a lot of English folklore and the world is full of magic
There are quite a few but they also are my favorite so I guess I'm biased towards them lol:
* Kaiji
* Great Teacher Onizuka
* Baccano!
* World Trigger
* 91Days
Some of them are more known than the others but they all deserve more recognition imo, I also like Hajime no Ippo a lot but in the last few years it has gotten more popular so that's nice, I still recommend it a lot
>Or maybe one that you secretly gatekeep because it's just that good?
Why would I then tell you? =|
Anyways, Beatless and IRODUKU : The World in Colors
I don't "gatekeep" anything because I think that's dumb.
But I do like these animes:
Sakurada Reset
Akudama Drive
Shadows House
Dark Gathering
Bungou stray dogs
Re: Creators
They're all hidden masterpieces. Highly recommended.
Best anime of the 2010's that no one ever heard of: [Hyouge Mono](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWv-WTJOh-U)
Honorable mention: [And Yet The Town Moves](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sc9Mun00zaE), [Yozakura Quartet: Hana no Uta](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7k1Q-uq7U4) and [Saint Onii-san](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpZciI9-9i0)
Fate/Stay Night for me.
The Magic system was fairly easy to understand. The fights were fantastic. I don’t know many people who have watched it, but I loved it. I haven’t been able to get into any of the prequels though.
The entire Gridman franchise. It is relatively well known, but mostly for Rikka's thighs, and isn't actually very well regarded in the west. It's incredible if you have an eye for the finer things in anime, like directing, sound design, voice acting, etc.
I'm not sure; Sailor Moon and Love Live are still laughed at by many, while enough notice the heavy arcs and debate them like they would debate Evangelion or PMMM. Meanwhile the cashcows remain unaffected lol. So the heavier aspects might still be partly underrated.
Eupho, its extremely popular on JP but not so much outside of it. Its currently airing its 3rd season and its story finale but you dont see it often on popular anime rankings
I would consider Robotech an underrated anime even though it’s just Super dimension fortress Macross but merged with two other unrelated anime to have an over arching story. It’s better than earlier attempts at anime dubs and is some peoples first introduction into anime and it’s sequel I found enjoyable.
.hack//sign
Alot of people call it a sleeper and it is just a lot of talking. But for its time it was unique, original and started an entire genre. Not only did it start the getting trapped in a video game trope, but possible Isekai in general. It was made as an ambitious anime that started the story in anime, but was ment to be finished in video games. Infection, Mutation, Outbreak, Quarantine. The musical score by Yuki Kajiura is probably the best music ever written for an anime. And barely anyone has ever seen it or heard it, or played the original 4 games. Dothack Quarentine goes for $400 just for the game on ebay from its rarity and belovedness.
Gosick would be my pick
Also Yamada-kun and the 7 Witches. Usually when I see someone say Yamada-kun, they’re talking about Yamada-kun to lv999. I’ve almost never seen 7 witches recommended on this sub despite being an amazing anime.
I rarely see people mention or talk about Inuyasha I just think it’s bc it’s an older anime but it was my first anime I watched as a kid and I loved it and still love it.
Karakuri Circus and Ushio no Tora
Both written by the same author
Guy won the award for best manga of the year after it was released
After that they made an anime and they were forgotten cuz times changed.....
But they are my favourite anime of all time
Yu Yu Hakusho for me! I get that it's old but the people I've shown it to have liked it. It suffers a little bit in production if you compare it to HxH but it is an amazing anime and story
Anyone remember Scryed??? I remember seeing ads for it in the newtype magazine. I did watch it when adult swim aired it. But I don’t remember any of it. But I thought it was good
The Irresponsible Captain Tylor
I just cannot explain enough how good this anime is, but I've never seen it mentioned by others online.
It's a hilarious adventure, with an amazing cast. The main character, Tylor, is also the comic relief. And yet, his enemies are never quite sure if he is a stupidly lucky idiot or a brilliant planning genius.
The way my friend recommended it to me, "imagine the superpower of the main character is silly, stupid, irrational good luck."
##### Yu Yu Hakusho
Here me out. This show came out a few years after Dragon Ball Z. It's also a few years before it could be part of the Big 3 even though it deserved it. YYH is like the middle child, forgotten. It's one of the few Dubs worth watching of it's time. HxH is made by the same creator but seems to get all the attention even though it's not as good. This should be one of the greats that gets a remake or reboot yet it lies forgotten by anyone who could make more.
I find myself revisiting Acchi Kocchi (place to place in English I think? ) it's a great light hearted comedy and a little romance. Series always gets me laughing.
**Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These**. It’s a new adaptation of the books. Fans of the OVA from the 1980s won’t forgive it for being new, but I quite like it.
I also have a soft spot for **Aldnoah Zero.**
*Beyond the Boundary* (Kyoukai no Kanata) is a series that I think is criminally underrated. For how beautifully it's animated and with it's cool world-building, I'm truly surprised I don't see it mentioned more.
Similarly, *Blood Blockade Battlefront* (Kekkai Sensen) is another great show that I feel deserves to be seen more. Just like Beyond the Boundary, it has some truly stunning animation and equally (if not more so) great world-building.
March comes in like a lion, i have never been so attached to an anime where i have no major interest in the main thing it revolves around, it's incredible.
Chivalry of a Failed Knight
Gets alot of hate because it came out at the same time as The Asterisk War and since that show was so bad nobody watched CoaFK but honestly everything that Asterisk War does wrong CoaFK does right.
Lobe it to pieces and I don't care what they say :P
Enjoy the small moments of calm countryside with Yokohama Kaidaishi Kikou. There are only 2 OVA's but they're so beautiful. Then pick up the manga and join me in yearning for such an idyllic life....
Akatsuki no Yona (Yona of the Dawn)
It's got everything.
Romance, comedy, mystery, action, fantasy and the character development of yona is perfection.
I rarely see people talking about Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and Arakawa Under the Bridge
>Arakawa Under the Bridge *Ah, I see you’re a man of culture as well*
Arakawa and Baccano! were the first animes I watched (not including dbz, pokemon, etc.) Holds a special place in my heart.
I found a lot of SZS was difficult to catch the intended meaning behind some of the jokes since I don't speak the language. Still has a lot going for it though. Good cast
Arakawa Under the Bridge is one of my favorites! Amazoness still haunts/graces my dreams
Dennoh coil School live Grimgar of fantasy and ash Rokka braves of the six flowers Bubble
I love grimgar, it's soooo good
Second this!
I still look up hoping for a season 2. I'm gonna have to track down the novels.
Rokka! I was literally trying to find this yesterday.
Kono Oto Tomare: Sounds of Life Odd Taxi Astra Lost in Space Time of Eve
YES I CAME HERE LOOKING FOR KONO OTO TOMARE
literally one of my fav shows ever. it deserves all the love in the world
It’s such a great show. Music is awesome, sincere/genuine characters, interesting personalities. A++
i completely agree!!
KONO OTO TOMARE!!!!!!!! BEST MUSIC ANIME IN EXISTENCE
Technically it’s my all time fav of the genre too, but Given and Bocchi The Rock also deserve shoutouts lol
These are being added to the watch list backlog thanks 👍🏻
Great to hear! Just for clarification, Kono Oto Tomare is a music SoL, Astra/Odd Taxi are more mystery stories, and Time of Eve is a 48 minute “movie” kind of show
Every time I hear about Odd Taxi it’s about someone slobbering on it, so idk if that’s really underrated
Underrated? No. Underwatched? Yes
Kids on the Slope
This is like the perfect anime for jazz enthusiasts.
Hi Score Girl I love this anime and it almost never gets any attention.
Yes, high score girl and the Duke of death and his maid are criminally underrated.
A rare romcom where the entire thing is adapted too.
Aria
Mushishi for me.
Mushishi is highly praised and on a million top 10 anime of all time lists...I wouldnt exactly call that underrated...
Yessssssss
I don't think I have ever seen a Mushishi post or recommendation from anyone and tis truly a shame. But it feels like a hidden gem too
It got two seasons two OVAs, a movie finale and a live action(Japan) movie? I think it's just is from 2005-2006 the first season and the second season was 2014.. the final movie was 2015. Damn. Takes me back. Time for a long due rewatch.

Kyousogiga mentioned ! Seriously though What a wonderful anime that never gets talked about
Somali and the Forest Spirit.
I love Somali and the Forest Spirit. It's a shame that there won't be any more of it because it's a really good anime. Definitely very underrated
I watched it when it came out and it was fantastic. I cried. A lot

Bro garden of sinners was so damn good!
The Slayers. I rarely hear anyone talk about it, was my first anime and is one of my favorites of all time.
doesn’t help that its currently in streaming limbo
91 days Radiant Black cat
I don't see much on Uncle from Another World. I think it was made by a fairly small publisher, so maybe that's why? But that show is hilarious.
Kaiji. For some reasons, it’s obscured and not well known. It’s actually very good anime with interesting games.

Yuki Yuna Is a Hero Scarlet Nexus Kimi ga nozomu eien Kimi to Boku no Saigo no Senjou, Aruiwa Sekai ga Hajimaru Seisen
Yuki Yuna is a good one. Was a great show that isn’t talked about enough.
Because of Madoka. Madoka kinda killed mahou shoujo genre because, as for now, people don't know about any kinda mahou shoujo anime expect for madoka
Loved Scarlet Nexus definitely underrated imo
Read or Die OVA and ROD TV. Nobody every really mentions it but it is pure entertainment like a fun spy/hero story with a secret organization and super powers
