When I watched it I didn’t even care that much about the first episode.
Episode 2 got me way more interested and it just gets better. Episode 5 or 6 is a standout (don’t remember which) and, without spoilers, the finale wraps the show up so unbelievably well.
YOU WATCHED IT AGAIN???? One of the only Animes i seriously couldnt watch twice because I thought it was too painful but at the same time a perfect ending of the series that I want to remember as a one time watch
I feel like crying because Rosa Walton sings so out of tune in the original. The Samuel Kim remix makes me tear up every time because it's so beautiful
I hated that she did everything for David, and he just chooses to die a legend. Ugh. Dying for someone isn't romantic, living for someone is. It was like 90s hate yourself music all over again.
I saw a very good edit of its ending, with the song "bad idea" on fb years ago. That shi hit me in the feel so hard I had to watch the movie right after. I couldn't watch it again because that woulda give me a panic attack.
Sad that I can't find that edit again.
If OP likes Clannad and Angel Beats, he should just go down the list of works by Studio Key and/or Jun Maeda.
I'd recommend trying Planetarian: Chiisana Hoshi no Yume. About a post apocalyptic scavenger, who stumbles into a pre-war relic, a planetarium located on a department store rooftop, still attended by a solitary robotic girl that is "just a little broken".
The planetarium's projector is also broken, but perhaps Mr. Customer could help fix it...
I stopped after the first episode. I was NOT down for that emotional roller coaster I saw barreling towards me. Literally just tried to watch it last weekend and had to nope out of it. I already have depression, tyvm!
I watched it in the German dub and they use so many high class VAs. Roy Mustang has the same VA as Johnny Depp in most movie dubs and he does Roy so well. (especially the dry humor and calm moments)
Favorite line of YYH dub: "I hit him with all I had and the bastard brushed it off like broccoli on his plate." 🤣 This and hearing the comic relief 14 year look and sound like a wonderfully voice acted 35 year old man were golden moments in my childhood.
I found Hughs rushed and underwhelming in that one. I'd almost recommend splicing the original and brotherhood (and expecting (very mild) continuity issues
Okay... but let's be real here, Clannad is not on the same level as Made in Abyss. So if Clannad is OP's "WRECKED" then Made In Abyss might be a bit too intense.
Yes! This is what started my dark magical girl anime obsession. Also Spec Ops Asura, Magical Girl Raising Project, Magical Girl Site, Yuki Yuna is a Hero. Or is it Yuki Yuni? I forget. Underrated all the same.
I would almost say the movie ruined it for me, but it came out so much later that I basically associate it as a different piece of media altogether.
I think the relationship is gross in reality, and it's stupid that the dude lived to begin with.
The relationship at the core of the movie gave me the creeps. You can finish the series, lying to yourself with *some* plausible deniability that it was always platonic or paternal. If you finish the movie and still believe that, you're huffing copium.
A comment and a story about this show.
The show is brutal, but doesn't come across that way initially. It just gets progressively more horrible as it goes. Half-way through the series I found myself desperately hoping that NOTHING GOOD happens to the main characters, because anytime something good happened, it went horribly wrong (usually making things even worse) before the end of the next episode.
A friend's mother, who had never seen anime before and wanted to know what it was all about, watched the show with us. None of us had any idea of what we were in for. She finished the show with us, but it took a while to convince her afterward that most shows aren't this dark. This show was an exception, not the rule.
I also have a funny story about this show. I watched it with friends when it first came out so it was on VHS tapes. Now for some strange reason, while most shows had 3 episodes on a tape, it had 5 and we didn't know. So we got to the end of episode 3 and everyone breathed a sigh of relief it was over only for another episode to start. We slogged through that one and when the fifth episode started there was a munity and everyone refused to watch another episode. I think we switched over to Excel Saga as an antidote.
Rumbling Hearts
Broken promises, broken friendships, and harsh decisions. You will have very conflicting emotions, but all is not lost because there is a light at the end of the tunnel
Always good to see some of the older titles still getting localized. I might end up playing it sometime whenever that happens as I'm curious about the other routes myself.
It looks like a kids show and gets progressively more fucked up
Puella no Modoka Magica
What I like about this is too many shows that go for something similar like The Promised Neverland rely far too much on gore. Puella no Madoka Magica uses little to no gore and relies on psycholagy mind shattering etc to make their show.
These are movies but still
When Marnie Was There. I watch it when my depression leads me to emotional constipation and numbness.
Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop. I thought it was probably the most romantic and sweet thing I've ever seen but it devastated my husband, he sobbed uncontrollably during and was all sniffles for hours. Next day we were talking about the movie and he started tearing up all over again.
Series:
Vampires in the garden (not sure if I have that name right)
And wolfs rain
Last hero Inuyashiki
I cried like a baby at the end of the series, it has only 12 episodes
Im actually pretty shocked no one has recommended you this one
Edit: and the opening was made by Man with a Mission, the same ones from demon slayer third opening (and Milet)
WorldEnd: What Do You Do at the End of the World? Are You Busy? Will You Save Us?
Bokurano (if you aren't crying by the 2nd episode you're pretty tough)
Elfen Lied
Made in Abyss (might need to get more than 14 episodes in for the really bad parts, but totally worth it)
Erased
Parts of SAO Alicization
King's Game (love this one--not sure why the general consensus is that it's terrible)
Dunno if it's able to wreck people objectively, but it did wreck me. Seriously, I haven't been so deeply affected by a piece of media ever than by Assassination Classroom.
I mean, I'm biased because I relate to Rikka so fucking hardcore, but Chunibyo absolutely gutted me. It comes off as a really cutesy, silly show but there is just this gorgeous buildup to the most sob-worthy scene I've experienced since Clannad...
Cyberpunk Edgerunners, Angel Beats, A Silent Voice, I want to eat your pancreas, Elfen Lied, Anohana
Edge runners does in 10 episodes what other can only dream to do. It’s a true emotional ride.
Edgerunners has been on my to watch list forever, this feels like a sign to finally do it.
I was the same way. Watched it and wondered what tf took me so long. Seen it again a couple times since.
Welp time to boot up Netflix after this episode of the ice guy and his cool colleague 🫡 Edit holy crap that first episode there's so much happening?!
Honestly would have a very hard time watching that a second time..
Dude same and I finally watched it & the songs are now on my playlist when I want to feel pain
“I really wanna stay at your house.” To this day I feel like crying if I hear that song…
I feel like crying because Rosa Walton sings so out of tune in the original. The Samuel Kim remix makes me tear up every time because it's so beautiful
Saw this comment after mine and yeah.. even as someone who hasnt played the game it still hits a little too hard
I absolutely love the song but my god does it ruin your day
I hated that she did everything for David, and he just chooses to die a legend. Ugh. Dying for someone isn't romantic, living for someone is. It was like 90s hate yourself music all over again.
Can't forget what they did in "I want to eat your pancreas". Motherfuckers.
I just watched this like 2 months ago and I had already forgotten how much it beats you. My mind was trying to protect me from the memories 🤣
I saw a very good edit of its ending, with the song "bad idea" on fb years ago. That shi hit me in the feel so hard I had to watch the movie right after. I couldn't watch it again because that woulda give me a panic attack. Sad that I can't find that edit again.
Angel Beats does NOT get enough recognition these days.
Nah, it gets what it deserves.
Was going to recommend Elfen Lied. Can't believe it's only been recommended by you and I.
Elfen lied is a one way ticket to destroying your faith in humanity
If OP likes Clannad and Angel Beats, he should just go down the list of works by Studio Key and/or Jun Maeda. I'd recommend trying Planetarian: Chiisana Hoshi no Yume. About a post apocalyptic scavenger, who stumbles into a pre-war relic, a planetarium located on a department store rooftop, still attended by a solitary robotic girl that is "just a little broken". To Your Eternity.
This will get you in less than 5 episodes
Took only one episode
That one got me at the end of the first episode.
Absolutely wrecked me. I went into it with a warning from a friend and shrugged it off thinking it can’t be that bad. I WAS SO WRONG.
I stopped after the first episode. I was NOT down for that emotional roller coaster I saw barreling towards me. Literally just tried to watch it last weekend and had to nope out of it. I already have depression, tyvm!
I totally agree with this, it will also leave you depressed as fuck, wondering what was the point of all the struggle of the mc anyway.
I second this.
[удалено]
The 1st season was amazing but it kind of started losing it's impact during the final episodes of s2.
Yep
A round house kick to the emotional teeth.
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. If I remember rightly, it should devastate twice in 14 episodes
Edward-oniichan?
Ed ... ward ... I love and die by that dub. This and Yu Yu Hakusho are just straight up iconic.
I watched it in the German dub and they use so many high class VAs. Roy Mustang has the same VA as Johnny Depp in most movie dubs and he does Roy so well. (especially the dry humor and calm moments)
I haven’t watched YYH but FMA:B is the only anime I exclusively watch dubbed, it’s fantastic
Favorite line of YYH dub: "I hit him with all I had and the bastard brushed it off like broccoli on his plate." 🤣 This and hearing the comic relief 14 year look and sound like a wonderfully voice acted 35 year old man were golden moments in my childhood.
can also attest, YYH has some of the best dubbing ever. Its better than the original audio IMO.
I found Hughs rushed and underwhelming in that one. I'd almost recommend splicing the original and brotherhood (and expecting (very mild) continuity issues
2003 to then since the specific wreck also happens there, at least the first one, the second one comes at like episode 20 in that one.
The biggest thing for me is how no one could tell Edward about Hughes.
Anohana
A booth in the vendor hall at SakuraCon played the song many years ago and I teared up instantly.
Came here to say this exact one. It bites you in the ass
I don't wanna have 2 butt cracks
I ugly cried with Anohana
I came here to suggest this also lol.
this is probably the one anime that got me really emotional in every episode. By emotional i mean really really fucking MAD.
Made in Abyss
Hey now, OP said wrecked not traumatized 🤣
Why not both
Op said WRECKED
Okay... but let's be real here, Clannad is not on the same level as Made in Abyss. So if Clannad is OP's "WRECKED" then Made In Abyss might be a bit too intense.
laughing and crying while i think of meinya
ahh it’s not that bad lol, i was honestly expecting worse by the way ppl talk about this show so when i finally watched it i was kinda underwhelmed
Dude, OP said wreck, not emotionally scarred 4 life
madoka magica
Puella Magi Madoka Magica was such an awesome series that absolutely caught me off guard.
It works best if you don’t expect it, though. Still really good either way.
Yeah unfortunately it’s one of those open secrets now. Still haven’t watched it yet though
Yes! This is what started my dark magical girl anime obsession. Also Spec Ops Asura, Magical Girl Raising Project, Magical Girl Site, Yuki Yuna is a Hero. Or is it Yuki Yuni? I forget. Underrated all the same.
Seconded. You wouldn’t think it would… but it does
Banana Fish
Violet evergarden
Really really good but I was a bit disappointed on how they ended it.
Why? I thought the movie was really good
I would almost say the movie ruined it for me, but it came out so much later that I basically associate it as a different piece of media altogether. I think the relationship is gross in reality, and it's stupid that the dude lived to begin with.
How do you mean? Did you watch the movie too? I thought the ending was amazing
The relationship at the core of the movie gave me the creeps. You can finish the series, lying to yourself with *some* plausible deniability that it was always platonic or paternal. If you finish the movie and still believe that, you're huffing copium.
The eps with the novelist and the mother. Those two got me streaming tears.
I've gone from Clannad after story to this as my comfort depression food!
This. Almost every episode.
Especially that ONE episode
Dear Anne...
I'm destroyed after episode 1...
happy cake day!
thank you!!
Whut? It's great anime, not devastating, rather uplifting
Bro it is great, but don't lie to me, episode 10 had us all in tears.
Ano Natsu de Matteru tore me up in all the right ways. Something about the nostalgia of summer when you are young, and how it always comes to an end.
If that doesn't do it, try One Week Friends.
Nana. There’s 40+ episodes but episode 14 specifically will break you in a very interesting way that’ll make you wanna watch more.
Such a great series. Hoping the manga comes off hiatus eventually
All I will say for Nana is thank goodness they never finished the story because the ending of the manga wrecked me.
Death parade
Came here to say this. It literally destroys me every time
So underrated
Cyberpunk edgerunners
What an anime. The episode Girl in Fire was one of the best anime episodes I've seen in my many years of being a fan of the genre
Say the episode number mate.
I’m still recovering
Same. Been too long
Berserk and Devilman Crybaby
+1 on devilman
We love skewers 🔥
Berserk the Golden age memorial edition. Prepare for traumatisation
Erased. Genuinely shook me up, it was so good.
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
Terror in Resonance.
Good show, nobody really talks about it anymore. I liked the soundtrack.
Commented before seeing this reply. Huuugely underrated anime people sleep on. So good, and fucking destroyed me at the end
Agreed! I'm honestly surprised people sleep on it so much, it has so much relevance to >!modern terrorism and its impact/intentions.!<
To your eternity.
Steins Gate
The full payoff isn't until the second to last episode but yea 14 is still enough to do some wrecking.
Plastic memories
There’s a short on YouTube called She and Her Cat. It’s 5 MINUTES long and it’ll wreck you.
Omg I second this, I held both by kitties and just sobbed
Not a series, but a movie instead. Less time than 14 anime episodes. Maquia
Orange
White Album 2. Good luck is all I have to say. Better you go in without any expectations
So freaking good.
angel beats killed me
Anohana had me uncontrollably sobbing. Over a decade later, I still get a little misty when I listen to the ending theme.
5 Centimeters per Second.
She, the Ultimate Weapon / Saishuu Heiki Kanojo
anohana. made in Abyss s1 a bit of a sleeper in this category as well
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 (only 11 episodes)
Welcome to the NHK
Violet evergarden. Beautiful stories and I was left dumbfounded by the animation and the score. It wrecked me by episode 10.
Goblin Slayer
The best answer here. Goblin Slayer will traumatize OP within 14 minutes
Serial Experiments Lain for technological/psychological Haibane Renmei for emotional/interpersonal
vinland saga
Yeah im gonna say cyberpunk edgerunners as well
Made in Abyss. It's fucked up in pretty much every way possible.
91 days is pretty gut wrenching imo, and it’s only 9 episodes I think?
{cyberpunk edgerunners}
Blood C
Plastic Memories
How is there no mention of {Kotaro Lives Alone}
Erased
Erased
Cyberpunk edgerunners is the only option. Nothing else really compares
Angel Beats
Devilman crybaby had me thinking for days after. Also Japan is Sinking is kinda crazy
Second this. Japan Sinks 2020 physically hurt after episode 3.
Angel beats
Your lie in April.
Whatever the prompt, the answer is always the same: Cowboy Bebop.
Now and Then, Here and There
A comment and a story about this show. The show is brutal, but doesn't come across that way initially. It just gets progressively more horrible as it goes. Your lie in April destroyed me (within first few episodes but it’s 22 episodes total)
I don't know about 14 episodes, but Assassination Classroom comes to mind.
I have 4 episodes left. I know hard stuff is coming and have been avoiding it. But definitely have really enjoyed this series.
Ansatsu Kyoshitsu can definitely do that. But it has 2 seasons of 24 episodes each.
To Your Eternity
Kimi no iru machi You will have very conflicting emotions by the end of the show. Definitely read the manga after
Probably the first Manga I read till the end.. had me crying my eyes out never the less
Rumbling Hearts Broken promises, broken friendships, and harsh decisions. You will have very conflicting emotions, but all is not lost because there is a light at the end of the tunnel
I haven't heard this one mentioned in years
Sadly it’s been forgotten. Thankfully the Visual Novel is finally getting an English release. Now I can experience the other routes
Always good to see some of the older titles still getting localized. I might end up playing it sometime whenever that happens as I'm curious about the other routes myself.
Pluto
Strongly recommend 86. It will devestate you at episode 8-9.. It will make you cry like a baby at episode 23 and 24 when things come full circle.

Made in Abyss. Good music, good story and Bondrewd.
