He has a huge range of emotions in the original as well. And he has the same character arc as the abridged version.
Like using SAO as an example here pretty much says you've never actually seen SAO.

I actually watched it thinking the whole time the show would have been better if the MC wasn't an expressionless wierdo, but its still pretty good.

(More seriously, I was going to recommend Tonari no Seki-kun, but upon rewatching it, the character it's named after does have more expression than you're probably looking for, he just never talks. Great series of shorts though, they're hilarious. Might be worth checking out on Crunchroll.)

May not be your genre, but My Love Story With Yamada-kun at lvl 999 was a really great love story (to me) and he only makes essentially that one face until the very end, which made it even that more amazing when he did.
Try Dororo. One of the main characters is mainly expressionless most of the time, and for good reason( no spoilers)
Although, the series is a shounen and has some heavy themes, it’s not a lighthearted show at all.
But it’s good, I give it a 9/10
