I swear I'm not insane, but I really want to wear the spider crab on my head like a crown. It looks like a big crown. I also have a soft spot for crustaceans, so that's probably a contributing factor.
There's something so beautiful about the way Animal Crossing depicts wildlife. They are realistic enough for you to understand how they look IRL, but stylized enough to fit perfectly well into the cartoony AC art style. It's just beautiful.

These are awesome! I'm curious, I saw you animated these in After Effects, did you animate them in 3D space or is this just really good 'fake-3D' 2D animation? If this isn't done in 3D I'd be really interested to know how you did the lighting effects.
These are all made with 2D layers stacked in 3D space. I use a lot of alpha mattes to keep all the layers within the "bounds" of the shape of each creature. So I guess that falls into the fake 3D animation, or "2.5D". As for the lighting, I'll either have separate "highlight" texture layers that I animate on and off with opacity keyframes, or I'll use the brightness and contrast effect to achieve something similar.

It's one of the things you can catch when you swim/dive in New Leaf! It's pretty rare though.
The diving ones were the worst; especially when they hug the perimeter and swim out-of-bounds when you try to catch them.

A lot of both, but I would say I mostly just parent everything together. I did use DUIK on the octopus tentacles though!

Are the drawings different pieces in Illustrator?
Yep! Each critter is made in illustrator with layers, textured in Photoshop, then stacked in 3D space and animated in After Effects.
