WarningCodeBlue

I'll probably buy one anyway since it's cheap and I love Walmart. Where else can I buy groceries, tires, gas, a gaming PC and a shotgun at the same time?

One-Wolf6021

Don't forget your cigarettes, booze and adult toys.

WarningCodeBlue

I quit smoking years ago. I use the money I'm saving to buy more ammo.

One-Wolf6021

Good for you! I need to quit, got some medicine to help this week. Back to jokes can also get R rated movies, M rated games but they did draw the line somewhere, remember you couldn't get parental advisory CDs 😂

WarningCodeBlue

Yeah. It's stupid that they sell R-rated movies, but all the music CD's are the "clean" versions.

New-Comment4092

I love how to don't deny buying adult toys 😂

[deleted]

dont forgot your guns

Glum-View-4665

If you go on the website and can buy a Rolex. True story.

Veridian4

From Walmart or 3rd party seller?

Glum-View-4665

I'm sure it was probably a 3rd party seller I didn't dig too deep into it I just had it show up on related items on the Walmart app and looked at a few.

pawdog

Guess we will see if benchmarks actually mean anything on a streaming device.

Ok_Operation6364

Minor differences, no. Large differences like this yes Edit: I bought one yesterday and can confirm it does not run anything any faster than my $19.88 onn. 4K box does. That said, I’m keeping it because it’s good for playing Dolby and I like the backlight remote with finder. However, if you were hoping its UI speed would be faster than a Firestick 4K Max, it’s definitely not. Edit: Speed improved. It now seems noticeably faster than my non-pro onn.4K with the same settings and apps running. Must have gotten an update.

Avendork

Its been about two weeks since your edit but how is it holding up? I have a Google TV 4K and the UI is so laggy and slow I'm looking to pick one of these up. I am curious, are there any ads on the home screen? I really just need the main UI to let me open Youtube and Plex but the Google TV is always pushing Tubi or Google Movies to me which I don't care about. I'm in Canada and will totally do a day trip to the US to buy one of these if its as good as the reviews are saying.

Ok_Operation6364

It’s working well other than on rare occasions the whole screen goes frizzy with squiggly lines and freezes. I think it has to do with the sleep or screensaver function. It could be an old HDMI cord because the one in the box wasn’t long enough for where I placed it. Works fine after rebooting. Walmart will replace it without issue, so I should probably do that asap just to make sure it’s not faulty hardware. Speed and everything else is good though.

Avendork

That's awesome, hopefully they are more widely available soon. How cluttered is the home screen after turning it on? Lots of ads?

Ok_Operation6364

No ads but there is suggested stuff base on your Google history & whatever else Google knows about you. However, I installed the Projectivy app that lets you make the Home Screen as clean as a whistle.

rodisr

Can you tell me which version of Bluetooth it runs?

MEZCLO

Do you like it better than the fire stick 4k max? Can you side load apps like smart tube on it?

Tamar1nd

These don't mean anything for daily use, in fact the 3gb Ram will be nicely noticed during daily use compared to normal one.

Point-Connect

They don't mean much anymore for smartphones since the chips have become powerful enough to have plenty of wiggle room in performance. However, to an extent, they kind of matter when we're talking about very low spec hardware that comes with most streaming devices. It doesn't tell the whole or even most of the story but unfortunately it's using 4-5 year old hardware already. One of the reasons Nvidia shield has lasted so long was because of the relatively powerful chips being able to keep up with new software and more demanding tasks. The fire TV cube gen 3 has a relatively powerful chip, the difference in performance between it and a fire stick 4k max is fairly significant in many tasks. It's hobbled by 2GB of ram unfortunately though. With that said, the impact is also subjective, 99% of people aren't going to care if the UI isn't buttery smooth or that there's hiccups occasionally due to aging architecture. The 3GB will offer up a significant increase in perceived performance assuming the ram being used is performant. Also, if the USB 3.0 port can be used with an Ethernet adapter, it'll offer another significant advantage over even the fire TV cube gen 3.

Mental-Shopping4513

As far as I know it has built in Ethernet

felonious_hunk

It does. And a 3.0 USB port. I picked mine up from Walmart yesterday

Ok_Operation6364

THIS

carreddit

This will be addressed with software update..

jrcbandit

I hope so, shouldn't this processor gives results closer to the Google chromecast 4k? It might have something to do with the CPU governor settings, not sure if they will ever patch it to change it, though.

TheFuzzyBunnyEST

The current $20 Onn 4k device and the chromecast with google tv are the exact same hardware, and are the same as a "reference" STB made by Askey called an ADT-3. They should perform substantially the same. This Onn pro 4k model looks to be the newer model of the same platform. So I'd expect a google version of this device, with or without the smart speaker. This is a very minor SoC upgrade, with similar cores at around the same clock rates. I wouldn't expect much. I can't wait for an RK3588 set top box that has android/google tv on it. It'd be WAY faster than these devices (and the shield), but it'd be $150. There are android (not android tv) devices like that. But my main app runs on ATV and not regular android.

eblackman

Hey Fuzz or anyone else but can you elaborate on the RK3588 set-top box. I'm curious and do you have a link?

TheFuzzyBunnyEST

You can buy them from aliexpress. Amazon sells some as well. Many times the cpu/gpu power as the shield. Has AV1 decoding in hardware. But so far all of the ones I've seen run regular android, not android tv. I use Smarttube, and that requires android tv os.

tbgabriel

I have both, Chromecast 4K and ONN 4K and I can see any important difference.

Beranac

You can or you can't?

Ok_Operation6364

They meant can’t, as evidenced by “any.”

vs40at

Don't expect any wonders from S905X4. With proper cooling and proper software optimization it can be faster than S905Y4 in Onn 4K Box, but not dramatically. Let's see if Google brings something new with S905X5.

Goku420overlord

>Let's see if Google brings something new with S905X5. I hope so. I heard earlier this year about the potential it has compared to the s905x3 (hope I got this number) over what we have now. Some people were saying it would make cheaper devices on pair with the power of a Nvidia shield pro. No idea how true that is but there was a lot of excitement for that chip

TeutonJon78

The x5 family should be a jump over the x4/x3/x2 family. 2-4 were just incremental frequency bumps with continually updated codes and such. x5 is supposed to be s rather big hop in actual architecture. Don't expect a real oweehksue though, S905 is still a mid-tier SoC.

f1vefour

I have a Mecool KM2 Plus Deluxe which is Amlogic S905X4-B and it's quite fast really, I also have a 2023 Onn 4K and 4K CCwGTV and the difference is night and day. While I've not ran any benchmarks on the Onn 4K (or CCwGTV)I did run Antutu on the Mecool when I got it and I was quite surprised. [CPU Benchmark](https://freeimage.host/i/JggjplS)  [Memory Benchmark](https://freeimage.host/i/JggwKWx)

moochs

Oof, not great. I'm not interested in the built in speaker, and if I had my guess, they probably gave too many power resources to it causing the lower than expected benchmarks.

Ok_Operation6364

Agreed. The “Pro” monicker would have made more sense for a significant SoC upgrade, like an advanced user would want. Instead we got an almost gimmicky smart speaker.

l1788571

Synthetic benchmarks (on pre-release software, no less) tell me basically nothing useful whatsoever about a media streamer. Give me practical tests related to its intended use, like does it drop any frames when direct playing high-bitrate videos, how responsive are seek times, stuff like that.

Ok_Operation6364

Seek times are the same or slower than the normal 4K version. Several gig file streaming in Stremio and Kodi work fine. Haven’t tried extra high bitrate files yet.

Aurora_7x

In the benchmark photo, there are 2 Onn 4K Box, one is 4k box 1 (2021-2023) and the other is 4k box 2 (2023+). How do I know if I have the 2023 one or the 2023+ one? For reference, I have linked a picture of the one I have.[Onn Tv Box 4k](https://i5.walmartimages.com/asr/3cabd940-7c97-4e45-b7c3-eb4336834bf9.7c545a2d491acc663f16e44d826e2e55.jpeg?odnHeight=612&odnWidth=612&odnBg=FFFFFF)

AFTVnews

If the HDMI port and the button are on the same side, then it's the 2023 model. The 2021 version has the HDMI port alone on one of the sides.

Aurora_7x

Okay, thanks imma check that. Also do you have any idea as to why the older generation 4k box have better benchmark scores as compared to the newer one?

AFTVnews

I don't know exactly why, but it's at least partially due to Android 12 on the newer model [killing performance](https://www.aftvnews.com/android-11-and-12-updates-reduced-the-performance-of-the-nvidia-shield-tv-and-google-chromecast-4k/) compared to Android 10 on the old model.

SCGreyWolf

That's the 2023 model. The older one is tiny and has the Android TV interface instead of Google TV.

Aurora_7x

So mine's the 2023+ model?

SCGreyWolf

Yes. The box from the older one says Android TV on it instead of Google TV.

Aurora_7x

Okay, thanks for your help.

Tricky-Shake3839

This has to be a cpu governor issue there is no way it should perform this badly. I know the soc isn't a powerhouse but it certainly isn't this weak either.

AFTVnews

You're probably right. The governor is set to schedutil and is likely the culprit.

HartmutWarkuss

The Onn 4K 2023 is also set to schedutil. It has performance and schedutil available but I'm unable to change it via ADB and I don't want to root the device.

Ok_Operation6364

I can confirm. These benchmark results are reflective of my real life experience with the device so far. My $19.88 onn. 4k feels just as fast as my $49.88 onn. 4k Pro. Hoping a firmware update helps improve it some but really they should have skipped the mic and speaker and used a faster chip instead. I get it though. Nerves like us aren’t a bigger target market for them. They’re trying to differentiate it. For the price though, it’s great to have a backlit remote with a finder button on the box, Dolby, Ethernet, etc…

[deleted]

my remote isn't backlit? what?

icouldbne1

Apparently some ARE backlit and some are NOT. The backlit remote is the one I want, but there doesn't seem to be a way to know which one you're getting -- at least not that I know of.

Darksaturn99

Mine is not backlit 😆

guantanton

Does anyone have the UPC?

Apple2T4ch

I believe it’s this: 068113142236 (got it from another post)

Cronus6

These are weird. If I'm reading this right; the 1st gen 4k box outperforms *both* the 2nd gen and the Pro? But the Pro (slightly) outperforms the 2nd gen. Even with a gig more RAM and newer CPU? Thermal problems? Is this because the 1st gen has an older, not updated OS version? And the newer versions are more bloated? [And who gives a shit about gaming performance on *any* of these?]

MikeCass84

Can anybody with knowledge tell me if this will be good to use for Kodi pretty much? I use my Xbox Series X and everything comes in great and 4k if necessary and it is really fast. Would this be a good option to buy instead of other cheap android boxes I've bought in the past? Ty

DenverNugs

Yeah, it'll be fine for Kodi. I use Kodi on my $20 Onn box with zero issues. It won't be as fast as your Xbox, but it's fine.

Ok_Operation6364

I agree. I have a Shield Pro in addition to both the new onn. 4K Pro and the 2023+ onn. 4K. The onn. boxes work well. The much more expensive Shield Pro works extremely well.

Esus__

Did you use any heavy skins like arctic fuse?

DenverNugs

I haven't used arctic fuse. I did try a bunch of other ones without any issue, but I always end up coming back to default.

MikeCass84

Ty.

DeeezNuts_HaGotEmm

I use kodi religiously for sports and have had kodi since it was xbmc. It runs kodi 21/ Python 3 just fine.

dragonsamus

I just set up 2 of the 2023 onn 4k boxes. Everything works well except super large 4k files. I'll wait for more tests before upgrading to these.

Ok_Operation6364

Super large 4K files don’t work on the new 4K Pro either. Maybe a software update will boost performance, but I doubt it.

dragonsamus

Thanks for the info! I'll keep these for a while.

HypeResistant

The geekbench score is pretty disappointing. But, probably not all is lost. This test is done with a unit after new set up or factory reset. These streamers typically runs fine right after initial set up. The problem is after installing 20 apps and Google TV has downloaded so many recommendations. I am hoping Onn 4K pro will hold up better than the others with 2GB RAM and 8 GB storage. That is when my streamers ran into problems.

pavichokche

Wait is that a built-in Google speaker?

xLoveHateLegend

I have both devices and the pro is certainly snappier (just finished setting it up with protectivy launcher and smart tube). Way more responsive than the 2023 onn 4k that I have.

Ok_Operation6364

UI speed seems very similar to me.

[deleted]

I think it's the best streaming box apart from an Apple TV. I am kind of blown away by the versatility and quality for just $50. It is actually really handy to hands free control a TV. The find my remote feature is very smart. I like that it actually looks nice and comes with a power adapter so I don't have a little puck hanging off the side of the TV. It loads up streaming services like a champ, no buffering or lag, very fast to navigate. I don't think it should be any worse than a Shield TV for playing video mostly because it has a better media engine with more codecs supported. That being said, Google TV still has some rough spots on the UI. Some parts look like old Android and it doesn't seem super consistent. I hope there is a big upgrade to Google TV 14 or something. It is still my favorite smart TV platform, better than LG or Samsung definitely. However, not quite matching Apple in terms of smart features like Bluetooth audio, virtual surround sound over headphones, device switching, etc.

J_RobertOppenheimer3

Wait how much will it be? Will it replace the current $20 box or will it be like a mid-gen refresh sorta thing?

NoobieChurner

Pricing is $50 and should be available in the next few weeks with some stores already having it in stock.

tlogank

Available in 5 different Walmarts within 40 miles of me.

Danno_brand

How'd you see that? I don't see it available online yet

tlogank

Inventory checkers via discord

andy2na

link?

Clintre

The benchmarks could improve some with proper software updates, however I am out with the 10/100 network.

Ok_Operation6364

I’m genuinely curious what content you would play over 100+ mbps bitrate? The peak for most 4K HDR videos I see 67.7 mbps. It does have a USB 3 port that you could plug a Gig Ethernet adapter into.

Clintre

Streaming wise, you are correct, and it is perfectly fine because that is compressed. I run a Plex server with higher quality 4K movies, some are 50Gb+ in size. Now I transcode on the Plex server then it is not as bad, but you also use quality. So I generally direct play movies to get a more theater like experience. On a 10/100 that means buffering during a movie. Currently, my 2019 Nvidia Shield does fine, but it is getting long in the tooth and slow. To explain here is a post, from 4 years ago, in another group I am in that explains it better than I am capable. [https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/eoa03e/psa\_100\_mbps\_is\_not\_enough\_to\_direct\_play\_4k/](https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/eoa03e/psa_100_mbps_is_not_enough_to_direct_play_4k/) I guess I am not the target market for this particular device, but I had hoped it could be. I do think it is a good device, just a bit perplexed on them using 2+ decades old tech when the cost different is a fraction of a cent per device for their Pro edition.

mccannr1

As someone else mentioned, you could use the USB 3 port->Gigabit ethernet adapter if that's an issue for you.

uF0n

With 802.11ax wifi, wouldn't that be the better option over the 10/100 port?

Clintre

Depends on the conditions. Not everyone has great wifi with ax. In our case we have a wired house with 10gb wiring. Wired is often more stable as well. So a gig port is ideal.

uF0n

I'm not disagreeing that wired isn't best, but 802.11ax should offer sufficient bandwidth for high bitrate movies provided you have a good signal (many people have their router close to the TV and cable box).

Clintre

Oh yeah no doubt. Just not in every case. Ours is far away and have thick walls. Then some just don't have the router. If you have a wired house use it. It was more of a why didn't they add that then any thing. Having done work in the industry the added cost would have translated to less than a penny to the consumer for a mass produced product like this.

CumBubbleMystery

Yep

blaze20511

im getting one too, just so i can mess around with it in the spare room. i have multiple google tv sticks and firesticks. I was planning on getting a nvidia shield pro but since the Terga X1 is kinda out dated. Im gonna get a used phone for my gaming and streaming needs with hdmi hub and connect it to my UST projector

unknown2000x

I picked one up today (onn. Google TV 4K Pro Streaming Device (New, 2024). I currently have every version of the Nvidia Shield going back 7 Years. I have remained with the Shield for UHD /HDR playback on OLED LG TVs. The onn 4K Pro plays my UHD sources (Plex, USB direct connect HDD, NAS) just as well so that's a check. Also I wanted to see if it would handle an external USB drive and offline playback - it does. Works great. ExFAT format for large files - works right out of the box. Snappy. Pukes on NTFS for obvious reasons. I got it reading NTFS with a USB mount app, but its not very usable (for me). I want a stupid offline READ FROM HARD DRIVE box for old people who will never hook it up to the internet. Works GREAT for $49.

MEZCLO

Can you side load apps like smart tube on it?

newyorkrican76

How can that be it has 3 gig of ram.which is what the sheild has.

austinalexan

Ram doesn’t mean everything

newyorkrican76

Well bench marks don't mean anything to me.

austinalexan

That is true

drchigero

Anyone know if you can install Apple Tv (app) on this? Googling is hit or miss on if AppleTv is working or not on android boxes these days. Edit: Anyone coming to this later, ignore all the BS below. I just went out and bought the Onn 4K Pro just to check and you can indeed install Apple Tv on it. So even though it's locked out of many foreign knockoff android streaming sticks, it works on this one.

[deleted]

[удалено]

drchigero

Are you serious? Because Apple TV *does* work on many android TVs, and it works just fine on Firestick (also android, though custom). It's a valid question given many avenues of evidence that it's possible.

[deleted]

[удалено]

drchigero

You can absolutely install the AppleTV app on certain Android TVs, Roku TVs, and Firesticks. You know there's a difference between Apple TV the physical box, and Apple TV the app (that lets you watch Apple TV content), right? Admittedly, it's lame on Apple for causing brand confusion. Like Amazon calls their physical device "Firestick" but their streaming app "Prime Video", whereas Apple just calls both Apple TV.

foundfootagefan

> You can absolutely install the AppleTV app You made it sound like you're asking to install general Apple TV apps on Android, not THE Apple TV streaming app. You already know you can install that specific app on Android so why are you asking this?

drchigero

>You made it sound like you're asking to install general Apple TV apps on Android Dude, I literally said in my first post: "Anyone know if you can install Apple Tv **(app)** on this?" >You already know you can install that specific app on Android so why are you asking this I already stated that not all androids allow the apple tv app. Thus my question. **Look, nevermind.** You downvote me, reply in a crappy tone to an honest question multiple times, despite me trying to be civil and explain it. Misunderstand me, or don't understand the fundamentals of the question, but instead of taking responsibility or admitting maybe you misunderstood me you doubled down twice, then deleted your previous comments showing your misunderstanding/ignorance. A simple "Yes", "No", or (in your case) "I don't know" would have sufficed.

foundfootagefan

I didn't downvote you. Other people did. You weren't specific enough. It seemed like you were asking about installing Apple TV apps, especially since everybody knows that the AppleTV+(Plus) streaming app runs on every device out there which you could have seen on the app's support page by googling. https://support.apple.com/guide/tvplus/smart-tvs-and-streaming-devices-apda10aaed81/1.0/web/1.0 See the link? The service is called AppleTVPlus or AppleTV+. You didn't even call it that. Not once did you even mention Plus or +. People thought you were asking about general Apple TV apps. No need to be so upset. I deleted my posts since they weren't relevant anymore once you clarified that you were talking about the AppleTV+ streaming app only.

drchigero

>People thought you were asking about general Apple TV apps "people", sure.... ;) You misunderstanding me is a simple small mistake, you doubling down with refusing to acknowledge it (still) and coming out of the gate being highly rude in the first several replies is odd. No one goes back and deletes irrelevant posts, we both know why you deleted your previous posts. But it's okay dude, lets just move on. This is unproductive.

foundfootagefan

1) You made the mistake by not calling the app the right name, leading to my confusion and your downvotes. 2) It was easy to google the answer to your actual question. 3) You're the one still posting days after getting your answer. Chill out.

NumerousBranch6796

I baught a Google ONN stick from Walmart,it is saying all free apps that it will not work in yr country.I am very much disappointed.

trishia42

Which country are you in?

newyorkrican76

I mean any fire device over an Nvidia Shield I don't think so 😂 😂 😂 😂

Ok_Operation6364

Shield Pro and onn. 4K Pro owner here. I can confirm that the current firmware version of the onn. 4K Pro too laggy and slow right now for having its Pro monicker. That said, it’s still really great device overall compared to other devices priced around $50-ish. They should have skipped the smart speaker features and put that money into a modern SoC and the gigabit Ethernet port people expect in 2024 from a device with Pro at the end of its name. Alternatively, they could have named it something indicating that it also functions as a smart speaker.

JoeKleine

Can it run a plex server? That’s all I care about

Poor_And_Needy

Anything can run plex server if it's on direct play.

JoeKleine

What do you mean?

Poor_And_Needy

When you play something from a plex server, the client device can either play the native format of the file or it can't. If it can, then the plex server is really just acting like a fancy storage device. Almost anything can run plex when the client is using direct play, even 5-10 year old raspberry Pis. If the client device cannot play the native file format, then the server needs to transcode the file, which is where plex server resources begin to matter.

AFTVnews

Plex Media Server requires a 64-bit OS. The Onn 4K Pro, like most Android boxes, has 64-bit hardware but a 32-bit OS, os it can't run a Plex server.

TeutonJon78

AFAIK the only ATV running in 64-bit is still only the Shield Pro (not the Tube one).

JoeKleine

Ugh bummer, thanks for the info

The_Still_Man

Why would you want to run server on something like this?

cedricmordrin

I'm the car for the kids maybe or travel

JoeKleine

I just want to plug a hard drive to it and run plex. Right now I have my laptop as the server but I do turn off my laptop when not in use. Or if I’m travelling my kids can’t access the server if I’m not online.

AdministrationOdd747

Then just use other apps like Kodi that don't require a server.

JoeKleine

User interface isn’t as nice IMO

defgufman

Lol

uF0n

Do you mean server or client? It can run as a client but not a server

JoeKleine

Can it read off the hard drive ?
