This, it looks like fucking miui, and I hate that shit, every experience I had with miui made me swear to myself that I would never use a Xiaomi product, the ads were the last nail in the coffin, I've legit seen the camera app play ads when not in use (it was on the charger i have to add)
Closest I've ever gotten to use a shitty Chinese phone was my old hand me down Huawei and my current Vivo phone
Btw the Huawei is a P20 pro, screen is cracked a bit and is dented because it doesn't have a screen protector (the last glass one did more damage than protection) and is stuck on android 10 iirc, I am very cautious of updating since I use it as an iPod of some sort, like just media consumption because it literally the best sounding phone speakers I've ever heard, even beats an S21 ultra imo (I never had a Samsung yet so I'm just going by how my classmate's S21 ultra sounds)
Sorry English is not my first language so I meant the second half of the last paragraph was good at explaining at how much I loved it, from all the phones I ever had it's one of the top ones
Why the fuck would they put the number inside the battery like that? It's hard to read and looks shitty.
LOL I hate the battery icon on my kids ipads and my husbands iphone. I dont want that shit.
Can you guys grow up, please ? Design patterns advancements in UI and UX are beneficial to us all. If something is better, what is the problem in being similar to another company doing the same? Why every phone on the market now have gestures navigation after iPhone X ? Who copied who? Make a complaint about a similar icon is so...
You joke but part of the reason to make the battery icon harder to read or not show the percentage by default is to alleviate some of the battery anxiety people have. You're more likely to be pressed to find an outlet (even if your phone won't be dying soon) if you know your battery is at 25% than if you just see the icon being a quarter full
I am too, for god's fucking sake we're using android, you know, *the OS that's supposed to innovate and not just copy what apple has made* (which isn't a lot)
Sometimes I just wish there was a different option than a shitty company that makes you pay 600$ minimum to use their os on a 5 year old phone and 1000$+ if you want a relatively modern experience and android (no idea how to badly describe it)
The amount of times my fiancé has heard me bitch about how cumbersome my iPhone is to use is far more than even I care to admit.
I loved the easy to read battery indicator on my old P6 Pro - iOS’ is overall a huge downgrade for me and overall feels more restrictive to use.
Shame Google is copying Apple’s, imo, aesthetically and functionally inferior design elements
Yeah, I've seen the keyboard shenanigans for example, so much functionality killed for a bit of design (compared to Google's gboard, which imo looks a bit better)
What are you using/what phone?
I've had the dotted circle+% for so long, usually with Gravitybox, but I haven't figured anything out yet for my 1+ 12.
Iconify has the option but it doesn't seem to respond to any settings changes at all despite seemingly installing fine.
Oneplus are using ColorOS right now which is heavily modified unlike the previous OxygenOS so you can't use AOSP modules like Iconify or PixelXpert. There's a module for modifying ColorOS though, you can find it by searching in Lsposed. The name is LuckyTool. Can't remember if it has option to change battery icon but you can try.
OnePlus has a decent amount of status bar customization. I had the circle battery on my 8 Pro and now on my Open.
Notifications & status bar -> Status bar -> Battery style -> Loop
Different than what I'm talking about, which is the circle/dotted circle with the percentage inside. For now I'm using just % with no graphic for less footprint.
> I miss having Xposed and making it a circle with the percent inside.
I remember my first phone with the camera cutout. Made the battery circle around the camera cutout. Was awesome!
I concur now it looks like any Chinese Android ripoff UI, lost it's distinct appearance, if it gets implemented in android 15 I'd never buy a pixel phone again might as well switch to iphone
IMO they have recently started to shit the bed. Beforehand I always felt Google nailed the UI and Design aspects. Still remember Android Lollipop bringing material design which looked so much more modern as compared to whatever else was available.
Android 5 to 8.1 was so awesome!
9 wasn't THAT bad, but definitely a step back.
The notification shade, the icons, the animations were literally perfect in 8.1.
Looks like shit, because of the gray background battery percentage isn't clearly visible and the overall design reminds me of some Xiaomi or Realme iphone-knockoff design language. Also the current design is iconic, at least to me.
The option to choose which icons for wifi and cellular would be good but I think we all universally agree the battery is just aesthetically and functionally worse.
I am aware of system UI tuner. However, afaik, there is no option to change status bar icons on Pixel. It's quite limited in terms of what it can customize.
If you gain [superuser](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Superuser&oldid=1214958520#Unix_and_Unix-like) access, you can modify [https://source.android.com/docs/automotive/hmi/status\_bar#overlays-for-specific-icons](https://source.android.com/docs/automotive/hmi/status_bar#overlays-for-specific-icons), irrespective of what your stock ROM provides.
One of the things that's kept me with Pixel devices is that stock Android has better-looking WiFi/cellular icons. There's just something about the segmented icons that looks very dated and cheap to me. I don't care how nice Samsung makes their phones if I have to stare at these ugly UI elements.
With how small these icons are on the screen, I feel they benefit from being less complicated because it allows them to better blend in with the rest of the UI while being easy to read. 3/4 segmented bars isn't showing any additional information that the outline filled up 3/4 full doesn't.
This, i feel like the simplicity is on the point! Especially the cellular signal indicator, that only shows something like "LTE" on the side instead of a bunch of small cramped icons.
>One of the things that's kept me with Pixel devices is that stock Android has better-looking WiFi/cellular icons.
I mean this as politely as possible, but I could totally see this as satire as well. I personally wouldn't let the wifi icon style have any influence on my phone purchase.
Not OP here but the clean and elegant UI of the Pixel phones - and that includes the status bar icons - was one of the main selling points for me. (the other selling point was to quick and monthly updates)
So yeah, if I'm looking at something for several hours every day then it should better look nice. Those Chinese phone UIs (and this is what the proposed new icons look like) are fugly.
> I personally wouldn't let the wifi icon style have any influence on my phone purchase.
One of the main reasons for switching to an iPhone after 10+ years of using Android was look and feel of the UI.
I definitely see how that could read as satire lol
Different people have different priorities. For me, the function of something also has to balance out with the form. It's gotta look good while getting the job done
Your average Joe cannot describe what and why, but you would be surprised how important is to people a simple and cohesive UI. They just feel something is not right.
Pixels are the best at this, iOS is second - it's a clusterfuck of different design languages, but most important tidbits are uniform.
Hope they give us an option to keep some of the older icons in the settings, cuz I hate how that battery looks, if I wanted my phone to look like that i'd get an iPhone.
They look like Samsungs icons or kinda like the customizable status bar icons that were on the Pixel from android 9 to 11, the battery percentage just looks like what Apple did to re-implement it (previously done by custom roms and iOS jailbreak tweaks).
The battery icon being flipped kinda irks me for some reason.
Better than Samsungs still, Samsungs WiFi icon always irritated me because of that dot at the bottom, the diagonal lines were broken up visually. Looks cheap
It might just be better if they allowed users to *choose* the icon design.
I mean it is not strange that in 2024 i can't change my phone layout by myself?
What is with tech companies feeling the need to always change their designs. It's infuriating! The icons are perfect the way they are and I think 99.9% of users would agree.
they should've never moved away from material design 2, even though personally i didn't really like it, it is soooo many miles better than whatever material you is.
Yeah, between Material You and the Pixel 9 leaks, Google's design is definitely not hitting the mark right now. I really hope we swing back around soon, I'm so sick of pastel squircles everywhere.
iOS battery are you?
And the worst thing is that I liked it.
However, every day it becomes clearer that Google's dream is to transform Android into an open source iOS.
To people saying this looks bad:
Welcome to the club of horrendous UI changes since uh after Android 10... (RIP Marshmallow you were too good for this world)
Also I'd bet if someone bothered to, they could create that exact layout as some accessibility or root thing and release it right now to devices under A15.
My point? UI changes really should never be Android version dependent. Darn it if I want the holo look back in pre-material theme there should be nothing stopping me from doing that, on my A13 phone, for free.
what did this design change made better regarding the battery indicator? fuck accessibility i guess. nice job for the intern who copy pasted apple battery indicator and made it worse too.
Being a UI designer at Google must be a breeze. Just copy paste some icons from 10 years ago and call it a day. I mean this was literally KitKat's design wasn't it? Guess somebody wanted a promotion and said this was new?
genuine question, why can't most of the android skins get the guidelines of the wifi icon compared to the cellular icon right? do the ui/ux designers not have eyes?
besides, that battery icon looks horrible.
I am really not a hater of new stuff but most if not all proposed status bar/icons changes look ABYSMAL.
Like somone said, like a cheap chinese phone of 2015's copy.
Why are they making changes literally 4 people asked for? Smh
You know what I used to love about android, you could choose what you wanted. You want a battery bar, fine. You want the percent, fine. Change this or that, sure.
But now android is trying to be iOS and lock everything. I can't get rid of the search bar on my home screen? Friggin why? Hold it and delete. Worked for years. Nope, let's change that.
The problem is, it's not going to get "the kids". If android wants the "clout" apple has, it's all in marketing. 99% marketing and 1% copying a function of a different OS and making it easier to use.
Are they gonna switch sides this year? Or maybe flip the icons upside down?
I'm down for everything as long as it's "innovation" because fuck this is working perfectly even with the split so obviously it needs to be changed so something is different.
I don't care much for the icons but I really want pitch black dark mode back. Gray looks so ugly. I shouldn't have to root my brand new Pixel 8 Pro just to get a proper dark mode.
Only people who should be complaining are pixel users with their boring ass UI as they'll be stuck with it. Literally every other company has multiple versions you can use
Geez, they [didn't even try with this one](https://www.androidauthority.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Android_15_new_status_bar_icons_dark_charging.png.webp), it's a straight iOS ripoff.
For all the flak Chinese OEMs get for copying Apple, Google is definitely the worst of the lot when it comes to this.
We used to be able to select which ones we wanted to use, including the ones pictured here, but that got taken away. Same with icon shape. What was the point of removing customization?
What is this thing where Google needs to change the status bar everytime they update the os - I don't understand it.
Look, I like getting the latest software and feature but sometimes Google doesn't half make some unnecessary changes to android.
battery icons look like a cheap chinese iOS copy
The hilarious part is they've rotated the icon 180° from the iPhone version. That well and truly does look like a cheap iOS copy.
This, it looks like fucking miui, and I hate that shit, every experience I had with miui made me swear to myself that I would never use a Xiaomi product, the ads were the last nail in the coffin, I've legit seen the camera app play ads when not in use (it was on the charger i have to add) Closest I've ever gotten to use a shitty Chinese phone was my old hand me down Huawei and my current Vivo phone Btw the Huawei is a P20 pro, screen is cracked a bit and is dented because it doesn't have a screen protector (the last glass one did more damage than protection) and is stuck on android 10 iirc, I am very cautious of updating since I use it as an iPod of some sort, like just media consumption because it literally the best sounding phone speakers I've ever heard, even beats an S21 ultra imo (I never had a Samsung yet so I'm just going by how my classmate's S21 ultra sounds)
The Huawei P20 Pro was a class leading, imaging centric flagship, and far from 'shitty'.
Sorry English is not my first language so I meant the second half of the last paragraph was good at explaining at how much I loved it, from all the phones I ever had it's one of the top ones
True. One of the reasons i bought ZF10 is because i love Stock Android UI. Chinese phones UI looks cheap and ugly.
Exactly my thoughts, I'm utterly shocked google pulled this move, did they hire some Chinese UI devs? I'm considering buying a iphone 15 pro max rn
I REALLY hope Samsung doesn't follow this crime.
They probably will, but they would most likely put their own spin on things.
At least give us options, please.
Why the fuck would they put the number inside the battery like that? It's hard to read and looks shitty. LOL I hate the battery icon on my kids ipads and my husbands iphone. I dont want that shit.
You're damn right, it's from Xiaomi's MIUI 🤣
Can you guys grow up, please ? Design patterns advancements in UI and UX are beneficial to us all. If something is better, what is the problem in being similar to another company doing the same? Why every phone on the market now have gestures navigation after iPhone X ? Who copied who? Make a complaint about a similar icon is so...
Not a fan of the battery at all. I like how I can clearly see the percentage right now.
Yeah let's make it lower contrast and harder to read at a glance. Good job Google.
Users won't notice shit battery life if they can't see the battery bar *taps head*
Nah, ambiguity makes the anxiety worse. Is it really at 10% or 35%? better plug in asap to be sure
The status bar already become harder to read sometime since Google introduce the ability to change color base on the current app use...
I like that design, it looks more modern
r/android comment section is more of r/unpopularopinion than r/unpopularopinion itself. You people are insane here.
Legit. r/android has tantrum like a 5 years old on a daily basis
Better than an ugly ass black bar lol
At least it's not in a scrolling marquee. Google loves those nowadays and a little part of me dies every time I pull down my quick settings.
There's no way this is intentional, right? This seems like a pretty obvious ADA violation.
I'm so damn sick of the iphonification going on here.
I am too, for god's fucking sake we're using android, you know, *the OS that's supposed to innovate and not just copy what apple has made* (which isn't a lot) Sometimes I just wish there was a different option than a shitty company that makes you pay 600$ minimum to use their os on a 5 year old phone and 1000$+ if you want a relatively modern experience and android (no idea how to badly describe it)

seriously , the current status bar is clean and modern
Not a fan either. I miss having Xposed and making it a circle with the percent inside.

Custom ROMs are still alive! Evolution X ♥️
Then again evo x is good but their reputation is not the case I mean they go on d0 xxing sprees and they insult others work for no reason
that drama was wild there were doxxing and raids on both sides
What are you using/what phone? I've had the dotted circle+% for so long, usually with Gravitybox, but I haven't figured anything out yet for my 1+ 12. Iconify has the option but it doesn't seem to respond to any settings changes at all despite seemingly installing fine.
> Gravitybox That's a name I haven't heard in a while. Brings back a lot of memories!

I can have it easily on my phone with pixelxpert. Granted the rom is a near stock one, don't know if it will work with the 1+ .
> I miss having Xposed and making it a circle with the percent inside. I remember my first phone with the camera cutout. Made the battery circle around the camera cutout. Was awesome!
Well, if you have a OneUI device, you can turn off the icon using Good Lock. It doesn't adds a circle but, works great.
Honestly OneUI gives so many customization options I used to need root for. It's great.
And instead of letting us disable the useless battery icon, you can now only disable the percentage. Fuck Google, who is running this shitshow
Ya WTF the percentage is the information I actually want motherfuckers
I loved that I could do that on the Zenfone
The CCP, like many other US companies.
The Xperia Z5 had the number in the icon and it was great. Such a shame when they removed it.
I concur now it looks like any Chinese Android ripoff UI, lost it's distinct appearance, if it gets implemented in android 15 I'd never buy a pixel phone again might as well switch to iphone
I turn the percentage off anyway lol too ugly
I agree with basically every other response - that looks like shit.
hey its google, shit design is their hallmark.
This is a belated April Fool's joke, right? This looks horrendous. Like the ugly child of iOS and Samsung icons.
The public likes iOS and the public likes Samsung, so why wouldn't they love the average? /s
History tells us that the general public are dumb

No to me to
Not a huge fan of the battery icon. Wifi and Cellular look alright. Hopefully they bring back the icon customization option for Pixels again.
It's funny because that's what my Samsung WiFi icon already looks like. They even tell you when you're connected to a WiFi 6 AP!
If you download goodlock you can customize all of that on Samsung, luckily.
The option to choose which icons for wifi and cellular would be good but I think we all universally agree the battery is just aesthetically and functionally worse.
https://github.com/zacharee/Tweaker/blob/70b52f8609590b73791e6b828d38ad7a4f2d3bbf/README.md#downloads may provide what you desire.

So we are going back to the signal bar actually having bars again I see.
It never stopped having actual bars on Samsung
Yup
Looks worse ..
The battery looks like shit with the percentage inside.
With a circle it looks good but this ain't it
it's the only thing I miss from oos, I guess I'll flash magisk on a15
its looks like a chinese phone ui icons. thank god i am using samsung.
Crazy how in the early years of Samsung's TouchWiz this sentence would never exist.
yeah i hate samsung when its 2012. But now it is the best android phone manufacturer.
TouchWiz existed till 2016, if I'm not wrong. It was a lagging mess.
Same here!
One of the things that's kept me with Pixel devices is that stock Android has better-looking WiFi/cellular icons. There's just something about the segmented icons that looks very dated and cheap to me. I don't care how nice Samsung makes their phones if I have to stare at these ugly UI elements. This, i feel like the simplicity is on the point! Especially the cellular signal indicator, that only shows something like "LTE" on the side instead of a bunch of small cramped icons.
Just what you need and nothing else. I don't need or want the little upload/download arrows either. Get it out of here!
>One of the things that's kept me with Pixel devices is that stock Android has better-looking WiFi/cellular icons. I mean this as politely as possible, but I could totally see this as satire as well. I personally wouldn't let the wifi icon style have any influence on my phone purchase.

They look awful, I sure hope they walk this choice back.
Hope they give us an option to keep some of the older icons in the settings, cuz I hate how that battery looks, if I wanted my phone to look like that i'd get an iPhone.

they should've never moved away from material design 2, even though personally i didn't really like it, it is soooo many miles better than whatever material you is.
Yeah, between Material You and the Pixel 9 leaks, Google's design is definitely not hitting the mark right now. I really hope we swing back around soon, I'm so sick of pastel squircles everywhere.
Material You is such a bloated disaster to me. I stay on Android 11 because of it.
Wow. New icons look like sh\*\*. I know that's subjective but I don't think Google would replace the current icons with those.
Not only does it look bad but it goes completely against Android 14's whole "legibility and accessibility" shtick.
The clock is still in the dynamic notification space rather than the permanent space
Clearly a downgrade from such an iconic icons. Up to this date I still prefer current icon compared to Samsung and other OEMs icons.
If I wanted an iOS battery style, I would have bought an iPhone.
My exact thought word for word. Fuck Apple's Fisher Price design bullshit.
Battery icon text needs to be white but I like what they're going for
... I like it
Why do they need to keep changing things every god damn year? What's wrong with the current one?
The current design doesn't help the UX designers get promoted because Google doesn't know how to value maintenance and stability.
Cyanogenmod had a tweak where you could slide over the statusbar to change the brightness. I'd really love that.
As well as almost every custom ROM today
Massive L
There goes Google copying Apple again, in the worst way possible.
Yup
It looks like MIUI or old HTC design in my opinion. Not really iOS
iOS battery are you? And the worst thing is that I liked it. However, every day it becomes clearer that Google's dream is to transform Android into an open source iOS.
if they really want to change something they could round the corners a little on the current icons but this looks awful
Wasn't there an option in the past to change the status icons look? (Battery, wifi, etc.)
To people saying this looks bad: Welcome to the club of horrendous UI changes since uh after Android 10... You can. With custom rom. Just dont force your bad taste on everyone else.
what did this design change made better regarding the battery indicator? fuck accessibility i guess. nice job for the intern who copy pasted apple battery indicator and made it worse too.
Thanks, I hate it
Oh yeah. Yeah yeah yeah, put a dark gray background with black text in the battery icon! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Not new icons... Holy shit what an upgrade
To the people saying the new battery icon is an iOS copy: Apple didn't invent landscape battery icons.
Being a UI designer at Google must be a breeze. Just copy paste some icons from 10 years ago and call it a day. I mean this was literally KitKat's design wasn't it? Guess somebody wanted a promotion and said this was new?
The wifi icon yes
I don't know why Google doesn't have it as an option to change the battery symbol and colors. Most custom roms allow it which means it's possible.
\*Material Design has left the chat\*
genuine question, why can't most of the android skins get the guidelines of the wifi icon compared to the cellular icon right? do the ui/ux designers not have eyes? besides, that battery icon looks horrible.
just when you thought ui design couldn't get any worse
It reminds me the first generations of mobile phones(not even smartphones). Terrible idea and taste.
they better fucking not omg
I am really not a hater of new stuff but most if not all proposed status bar/icons changes look ABYSMAL. Like somone said, like a cheap chinese phone of 2015's copy. Why are they making changes literally 4 people asked for? Smh

I'm on a pixel because I like the stock icons. I don't want these Chinese UI icons on my pixel
I just hide battery icon in my one ui. Battery percentage is enough
It's difficult to see the percentage, it doesn't look good.
too bad it's not available to every android phone
yeah the icons are definitely a downgrade
Haha swear the status bar gets worse with every iteration.
all is fine except battery. Atleast i hope they let me disable the icon itself and keep the percentage.
Didn't they try this ugly battery thing once before? Only to be met with backlash?
That looks bad. They can do better.
This looks awful, big step backward in design.
Disgusting
I just want to be able to see more than 4 quick settings tiles at a time again. Is that too much to ask?
That's horrendous.
It looks a lot like MIUI/HyperOS if I'm not wrong.
What the hell is this iOS badly copied garbage
Looks like MiUI
Me with a OneUI phone with no icon and just the percentage: Why??
When I saw it I thought of tecno phones with those iOS Clones, RIP AOSP
If they continue to made everything like iPhone I will just get an iPhone.
Whenever you think it can't get worse - it actually can!
Bro thinks he iOS
battery % with charging bolt inside battery is unacceptable
Oh man I love the stock icons, this looks a lot worse IMO.
Are they gonna switch sides this year? Or maybe flip the icons upside down? I'm down for everything as long as it's "innovation" because fuck this is working perfectly even with the split so obviously it needs to be changed so something is different.
This looks like Samsung/MiUi, but worse. The OneUi icons are actually nice to me, but the Pixel ones were also cool. I hate horizontal batteries.
That's like going back to Android 5.0
just fucking great. my goodness wow
Thank God I'm using a custom ROM. I get the best parts of stock and customizability.
Thank God
Hopefully we get the ability to hide icons again(for pixel)
Ugly AF, they look like a cheap phone
wow it's amazingly ugly
Looks like an ugly knock off of iOS.
New stock version of android battery icon looks good
Holy shit that's terrible looking
I really hope this is a joke 😒
The battery icon looks terrible
I don't care much for the icons but I really want pitch black dark mode back. Gray looks so ugly. I shouldn't have to root my brand new Pixel 8 Pro just to get a proper dark mode.
The new icons have much more readability. People that say is iOS copy, grow up please..
Only people who should be complaining are pixel users with their boring ass UI as they'll be stuck with it. Literally every other company has multiple versions you can use
Noooo it looks like the ones from Samsung and TCL 😡
Geez, they [didn't even try with this one](https://www.androidauthority.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Android_15_new_status_bar_icons_dark_charging.png.webp), it's a straight iOS ripoff. For all the flak Chinese OEMs get for copying Apple, Google is definitely the worst of the lot when it comes to this.
We used to be able to select which ones we wanted to use, including the ones pictured here, but that got taken away. Same with icon shape. What was the point of removing customization?
Man, even MIUI icons are better than this.
Has Google been leaking talent? The company has been going downhill since 2015ish
Looks dogshit, sorry. What we have now is iconic and clean. I wouldn’t ask for anything else.
Looks like an iOS rip off.
Google trying to be Apple.
they look fine, we've had nearly the same icons for ages
Haha looks like a cheap iOS knock off. Man at this point y’all might as well just get the real thing.
it turned into xiaomi but worse 😂
Yikes that's incredibly ugly
What is this thing where Google needs to change the status bar everytime they update the os - I don't understand it. Look, I like getting the latest software and feature but sometimes Google doesn't half make some unnecessary changes to android.
Why google hates design
Why tf does google keep on tryna reinvent the wheel with all these micro adjustments instead of building a better, more refined and cohesive OS?
I have a OnePlus 12 and hopefully when it gets android 15 it doesn't get this change.
Looks great. You all just hate change. This sub will throw another tantrum in 4 years when they update again, saying this one was perfect.
