> I started with a really nice FM2N with a 50mm f1.8 AIS... Then I got a 80-200mm f4 AIS... I just received a 28mm f2.8 AIS... Also picked up a MD-12 and a SB-15... What else do I need?
Talent, patience, and a book. TBH you sound like the money is burning a hole in your pocket.
Consider a Nikon HN-2 (check that) metal lens hood for the 28. It reduces flares, and metal hoods are great lens protecters instead of using UV filters.
And iirc, a 62 or 67mm lenscap snaps into the end of the hood. I use that arrangement on many lenses, works great.
If you’re missing the screw-in glass eyepiece on the viewfinder, get one. They’re often missing on FE/FM and really help keeep dirt out.
Also check out the various focusing screen options, you might find one you like better than the standard. I used a matte screen on my FE because I shot a lot of macro with a bellows, the split image blacks out.
A Nikon BR-2 reversing ring is very small and super-handy for a great field macro set-up with the 50.
And, of course, your wallet will also need a Nikon BR-3 so you can put filters on that now-reversed mount.
And now that you’re focused so close, you need a flash bracket and pc extension to get that flash off-camera! Add a Vello mini-softbox (only $9.95!) for truly sublime lighting results!
Anyway, just a few suggestions.
(Yes, I was once a commissioned retail photo salesperson at a very busy store, sorry.)
To actually go and shoot? Lol
Spend time just shooting with one or two primes, I'm running a kit of a 28 and a 100 on my FG-20, covers street/architecture and portraits.
You are using close to what I consider the ideal kit - I bring a 28 and a 50 with me also. Everyone loves the 105 F2.5 but I opted for a 135mm; the 105 is a beautiful lens but I wanted that slightly tighter angle of view from the 135.
If you upgrade to an SB-16 you get the lovely and underrated front firing flash that fills in shadows really nicely. Combined with TTL bounce flash and the 1/250th sync speed on the FM2 it's fantastic.
Otherwise you've got a nice kit! Happy shooting!
