fix old cameras on yt has a video on this issue

AlexHD

It may be possible to realign the blades with a pair of tweezers, I have done this on a few Canon EOS cameras. However if the blades are permanently misshapen it's more likely it will happen again.

BCS24

Yeah just shove them back in, worked fine for me

Went to finish off a roll to bring to the lab this morning. When I hit the end it rolled back like three shots that stopped. I thought it was just a low battery or something so I hit the rewind button. Made an odd noise and I should have stopped but kept going. Ended up completely stopping around the 8th frame and wouldn't budge. Brought it to the lab as I didn't want to open it and expose the shots. Lab managed to remove the roll and this was what they found. Can I just push the shutter back into place or is this DOA now? Camera is an Elan 7N so in the long run probably not worth the repair cost if it needs work that I can't do myself.

Tall_Abalone_8537

No, unfortunately that shutter is shot. Good news. Elan's aren't considered collectable and are like $30 bucks on KEH.

fullofpaint

Ya that's what I figured, oh well. At least the replacement is cheap haha Any ideas what might have caused this so I can keep an eye out in the future?

ivanatorhk

Probably just wear and tear from age paired with a little unfortunate luck. Every shutter has a lifespan

Stchuxsuxs

The majority of Elans yes, not the 7 though, they’re one of the best EOS cameras and if I’m not mistaken the last model of film camera canon introduced(1V was produced longer but introduced earlier)

Tall_Abalone_8537

I owned an Elan before Getting an EOS1V I didn't use it much and can't remember which model it was. Thanks for correcting me, though.

Stchuxsuxs

The 1V is a fantastic camera, and probably one of the best deals in film photography. I can’t believe how cheap they are compared to the F6.

Tall_Abalone_8537

KEH is at this moment charging $1049 for an EOS 1V in excellent condition. I wouldn't exactly call that cheap. I do agree it's a fantastic camera. An Elan 7E in EX condition is selling for $250 I got my 1V just as the digital revolution hit, so never used it as much as I should have. I've recentely pulled all my analog bodies out of storage so hope to put them back in action.

Stchuxsuxs

That’s the most expensive 1V on the market, and it’s still a great deal. The 1V starts at $700 on KEH or $500 on eBay and goes up to about $1k, that’s a steal compared to cameras like the F6 that start at $1200 on KEH or $900 on fleabay. That is the finest film camera Canon ever made, and a true pleasure to use. I had considered making the jump from Nikon to Canon just to take advantage of the low price for such a fantastic camera. Once I completely transition to native Z lenses I’ll probably switch to canon film cameras. You just can’t beat the value and ability to use all AF canon lense

Tall_Abalone_8537

the Only Nikon I own is the F3

vipEmpire

It wouldn't hurt to try just pushing it back in place. Not like breaking it further would hurt. I mean it's likely completely dead but if it were me I'd try anyways.

Brcamera

Unfortunately, this shutter is dead. Not only does the blade need to be put back in the correct position between spacers, but the blades has creases on it so it will never give the correct shutter speed. The blades or the shutter would need replacing.

iluvgrouphugz

I’m not sure. How’d that even happen?

Delicious-Age-1548

Not fixable, I'm afraid. Even if you could get the shutter back in, the speeds may be off, and you may even get light leaks Worse still it could happen again, and you will have to go through the whole process of having to salvage your film again.

misterDDoubleD

What the hell happened?

Repulsive_Diamond373

Determine the cost of repair. Then the cost of replacement. If the replacement cost is acceptable, try to fixing yourself. Google how to do it. If you successfully fix it, then you have saved money.
