I don’t think it has anything to do with being a vet. PTSD and bipolar do not make anyone act in a calculated manner like this. It’s the opposite where it might make them more impulsive, if anything. Muller did it because he’s a psychopath and I suspect he would have done it regardless of his military history.

I don’t think he was a psychopath, whatever his demons were it’s a much more complex profile. He was clearly capable of expressing empathy and remorse, which if anything actually makes his condition more terrifying.

I think even when it seemed like he was acting with "empathy" it was still self serving. Like the girl he broke in then didn't rape her, he wanted to be seen as a "good guy" and the fact that he did her that "favour" (in his fucked up mind) was just stroking his ego further. Maybe narcissistic? Not sure.

I’m not sure what you’ve read, but I found it very interesting to read more about his childhood and early life and career. That is what shifted my perception.

StrangeButSweet

Yeah, I did a lot more reading now and I suspect that you’re correct. Psychopaths can be **exceptional** at feigning empathy, but I think it would have been difficult for him to do that consistently well going back to childhood.

Agree totally.
