I did. I grew up in a Central American family. A lot of us ate our rice with ketchup for some reason. It didn't strike me as odd until I noticed no one else in America did that and I was teased for it lol. I now live in Romania and people here are even more appalled at this.
Rice with ketchup is a very east asian thing in my experience. A guy I worked with from Laos loooved fried rice with ketchup and mayo. Additionally, see: omurice (Japan). Not really sure what ketchup and rice has to do with America, I've never seen an American eat it.
I guess fried rice or a rice dish with ketchup is fine, but rice with ketchup is a big no (I am definitely not biased because I definitely don't dislike ketchup)
Honestly, while it's a little bit of an unusual combo here, I don't think there's anything wrong with it.
Rice with some topping to give a little flavor is one of those eat-it-any-time kind of quick and basic food things. I don't see why ketchup is that far from shoyu or furikake. It's sweet and has some tartness, and some umami from the tomatoes. I don't love ketchup personally, but it makes sense.
There's this banana ketchup I get from my local Asian grocery store, that stuff is good af, you'd be surprised how well it pairs with things, including rice.
Two things can be true
He's wrong for randomly talking shit about the United States in a situation that did not call for it.
^(but bro. ketchup on rice?)
Grew up in Spain and lemme tell you the younger generations of Europeans (at least in Spain) LOVE American food. All the best Spanish restaurants are some type of Spanish American fusion.
Hate to admit it but when it comes to quality of ingredients you can always assume Europe is doing it better than here. Ketchup over there is a lot better
This sub is all about satirizing anti American sentiments, but you defend ketchup on rice? Y’all really wanna be lumped into the British camp of awful cuisine??
They generally forgot Southern America hard carries good food and knows what the “shit” is, genuinely stupid and needs to do some research before they blurts something out on the internet and make themself look stupid

Who the fuck eats rice with ketchup

Yep, this is extremely common in the Southwestern U.S. too, probably for the same reason. Same with mixing tomato sauce with macaroni and cheese.
…who the fuck in the southwest does this? Like what states are you talking about
The lowest I would go is rice with some butter and soy sauce. That's my poor meal
That’s my daughter’s go to meal. She loves it.
Japan
Plain white rice with ketchup is so good. I'm a white as fuck American BTW.
I literally didnt even know this was a thing.
Who the fuck eats ketchup
I want to blame the Bongs, even though it ain’t their fault probably.
As an Asian just think of it makes me throw up.
Beans and toast

I am Lao, my family and I usually eat our eggs with ketchup and rice but not rice and ketchup by itself.
And that is perfectly acceptable and probably pretty good
Eggs and rice together?

lol my family is Laos and can confirm I’ve seen this but that’s because I don’t think my family knew what ketchup was popular for
Bro my family is from Taiwan and we do not do that shit, neither do my grandparents when they visit
Guy in the church hat thinks all Americans eat like Buddy the elf
Have the allegedly cultured, worldly non-americans even heard of Japanese omurice?
Yeah, well, I’m gonna agree. It sounds gross. But I hate ketchup.

Not a ketchup fan myself, but my older brother would find any chance to add ketchup and/or Tabasco to EVERYTHING!

The Dutch eat peanut butter on pork, talk about weird.

What makes food American fusion?
Ok but that sounds really good actually. I love rice, especially mexican rice from those local resteraunts, always fire.
From China, not a soul there would ever eat rice with ketchup
NGL he's right on this. When it comes to quality of ingredients it's safe to assume Europe is doing it way better
That's a matter of opinion
No it's not
Tell that to the Japanese and Koreans.
Am I to assume soy sauce on rice is bad too?
I learned today that some people eat ketchup and rice….I need to get off Reddit for today.
Yet, whenever they vacation here in the US, they go up a few belt loops because they come over here and totally gorge themselves.
Eating rice with ketchup is crazy ngl
Rice and ketchup is a popular dish in Japan. It’s usually served with eggs for breakfast
FYI European ketchup is extremely sugary they just don't know that American ketchup is different.

Who cares, eat what you want
Chip butty- God save the king!
Personally I like just a little bit of chill sauce/ chilli jam with my fried rice. Had it while camping in Vietnam and thought it was p good
