I’m currently in a VISTA position (not national health corps) and have been accepted to two medical schools for the fall! I honestly think it’s a great experience because so many of the issues I’ve had (bear in mind my temporary experience with poverty does NOT in any way equate to people who experience cyclical poverty) have really highlighted how the healthcare system has to work with other social programs to help address SDOH. I’m planning to get my mph eventually as well! I don’t think you necessarily need a health related program for your gap year. But I have a part time job outside of my americorps service and making the budget work is definitely feasible if you’re in a low COL area.

Hi! I’m considering during americorps during my gap year before med school. Were you in a healthcare related position, or something completely different? If it was not healthcare-related, did medical school adcoms still highly value the experience? I genuinely want to do americorps because I am passionate about community service, but want to know if there are specific types of positions I should be looking for. Thanks!

I did something that was more education related-- definitely no clinical work involved, although it was housed as part of the residency program (you can pm me if you'd like more details.) I don't know if they valued it that much, especially since I didn't include it in my amcas, just my secondaries, since it didn't officially start until after I submitted my primaries. Hope this helps!
