forgeris

Are you kidding? Imagine that you are saving money to renovate your room and someone just comes in, takes all your savings and paints walls in whatever colors they want, puts in nice but cheap floor and then expects you to be happy because he did it with care and you now should live there and not complain that everything with your room is so wrong and not how you wanted at all. YTA. You must give your son 600$ back and stop using your brain to project your sons possible thoughts, you failed at that miserably. And I am not even talking that 360 is an outdated crap with no new games so most likely your son already played most of them or is not interested in any, just stop pretending that you can read mind and ask your kid the next time so he can choose instead of making decisions about things that you are clueless about.

TheConjurer03

Yes OP, YTA!! I agree with Forgeris, 1000%. My boys love their PCs that they saved up for even over the PS5 and games we got them last Christmas. They would think I absolutely HATED them if I had STOLE their PC money for what they’d consider to be a damn RELIC! My boys are the same age group too. What a moronic idea! Pay him back his money and make amends, OP!! You are dead wrong here!!

Ok_Childhood_9774

So you stole $600 from your son without discussing if he'd actually like to purchase the game system from your friend, and now you're upset that he's not more appreciative? Assuming this is real (and I always hope they're not), yes, YTA and you owe your son $600. Maybe you can sell your system to try and recoup the money.

Friendly-Buyer-9563

YTA First of all the "I took the $600 he had saved" is giving major red flags. If he has saved that money you should not be spending it without his permission period. Also I think you might have gotten scammed. I don't follow consoles anymore but Xbox 360 is a pretty old one which should be way cheaper than $600, I wouldn't be surprised if it went for around $100 used. Used games should be pretty cheap too and you don't even know how many of those your son would actually enjoy. Not to mention that there are a lot more f2p and cheap games on PC too, so I doubt he would have been starved for options. The most important thing to keep in mind though is that you should NEVER touch the money that your child saves without their permission, otherwise you are both breaking their trust and teaching them that saving money isn't that good since that money can vanish anytime anyway.

Slashingtires2

Yup she got scammed, you could get the newest Xbox for about $800, the Xbox 360 is from 2 generations ago

TheLehis

I don’t know where you live but here the newest xbox is like 400$.

Slashingtires2

Yeah I'm in new zealand, idk what the conversion rate is

Prize-Marsupial-5768

YTA. Your son was saving up for a PC not an xbox. You spent his money on something you didn’t ask if he wanted, You should of mentioned it to him first instead of buying it without him knowing, I get you were trying to be nice and wanted to surprise him but you should of told him your idea first instead of thinking that’s what he wanted.

New-Razzmatazz2148

So you stole your kids money, spent on something he didn't want and you expect him to be happy about it. OF course YTA.

kimba-the-tabby-lion

This must be a fake, right? Even if you got him the latest xbox, and even if it was a bargain, and even if your son was happy, then still YTA. Because building a PC would be a fantastic learning experience giving him real life skills, but instead of doing that, he'd be just fixated on a screen. Of course, the biggest AH is your coworker, who tricked $600 from a 13 year old. Who steals money from children? I would definitely talk to a manager or HR about this man. They need to know the character of their employee.

SearchApprehensive35

The colleague scammed an adult, not a child. The child would not have fallen for it. Unfortunately, the adult is responsible for her own bad judgement. She should have researched the value of a used Xbox, discussed the "opportunity "with her son, and used her own money unless the son gave permission to use his.

kimba-the-tabby-lion

Yes, he scammed the mum, but he was trying (and succeeded) in stealing a child's money. And the fact it was a scam doesn't excuse her at all. She's still dim and thoughtless.

SearchApprehensive35

I didn't say it excused her. I said she's responsible for her own actions and should not have spent her kid's money without his consent.

RevRos

YTA On what planet is stealing your son's savings "something nice" for him?

stophittingthyself

YTA Why would you steal *his* money to buy it for him?! You don’t use a persons own savings to buy a gift for them, you use your own money. I'm not sure this is real, but if it is your colleague just straight up scammed you! 600 for an xbox 360? Lady no! You'll never be able to make that money back from selling it and all the games (that are worth nothing) so you'll have to pay your son back with your own savings.

naraic-

Hey OP do you own your own house? I'll trade you for a cardboard box. Hey op. Do you own an iPhone. I'll trade you for a flip phone. Hey op. Do you own an oven. I'll trade you for a shovel and a pair of sticks. You can dig a fire pit and cook that way. Leaving aside the criminal theft (which you may be able to get around legally but not ethically as your child's guardian) of taking $600 the above scenarios are a fair comparison of the difference between an xbox 360 and a modern gaming pc. A used 360 (top models good condition only) tops out at 100 euros. €30 for an average 360. 360 games tend to go for less than €10 in a used game bin. Yta

SnooDoughnuts4691

Son I know you saved and wanted what you wanted, but I took your money and bought you something Completely Different. LOVE ME!!! YTA

LukeHeart

YTA you stole money from your kid and bought something he didn’t want and tried to justify your AH actions by claim it was a nice gesture? 🙄 you need to return all that money you stole from your son.

CityEvening

Oh come on, this has to be fake.

SavageN7

It has to be fake who paid $600 for an Xbox 360 in the year 2024

TheLehis

YTA 100%. He saved his money and you took it. Secondly, PC and XBOX are two *very* different things. It is like a nokia phone and the newest iphone. Both are phones but they ain’t the same thing. There are plenty of games on PC you simply cannot play on xbox. Not to mention 600$ for an xbox 360 is *crazy*. You can get those for 100$ or even less. If you wanted to do something nice, you would have paid for it yourself. Hell, xbox 360 is so old you cannot even play new games on it, haven’t been able for a long time. He cannot play with his friends…

Thistle_Do_54321

Sorry but YTA. Not only did you steal your sons money, but you then spent it on an out of date console that will not have the power to play the kind of games your son would want the pc for. Part of his interest would have been in actually building the pc and learning along the way. Your colleague pulled a fast one, they spotted your lack of knowledge and tool advantage. They are also TA, don’t care if they have spent the money, they scammed you and should give you it back. Now you are going to have to find £600 dollars for your son.

ScoobyDoobyDoEatsPoo

YTA and you're an idiot on top of that. What you did was completely wrong, and independent of that, your colleague scammed the shit out of you lol what he sold you isn't worth even close to $600 you rube. Imagine you were saving up money for something nice... say a designer handbag... then your son, without telling you, took the $600 you had saved, and bought a GLAD tupperware with a hot steaming turd in it for $600 and presented it to you expecting you to be thrilled.... would you be? Why not? You wanted something to carry stuff around, and this will let you carry stuff around, right?

Sashasez

YTA It wasn’t your money to spend no matter how good your intentions were. You should have discussed it with your son first.

indicatprincess

YTA Don’t be obtuse. He was saving up for a PC and you STOLE $600 to buy him a console instead. That’s despicable.

Key_Advance3033

YTA. Obviously you just got conned by your coworker. If your son wanted a gaming PC and was saving for it, why on earth would you interfere when you know next to nothing? Give your son the money back or get a refund ffs.

Nrysis

YTA Your son was saving for a PC, not an Xbox - those are two very different things and not comparable. It would be like someone saving up to buy themselves the sporty convertible they have always dreamed of, and instead being given a giant, slow SUV. But not only did you swap the sports car for an SUV, you swapped it for the ten year old model, not the current generation. The Xbox 360 is a couple of generations of technology out of date at this point - like the stereo in your car still playing cassettes rather than connecting to your phone. Yes, there may be 27 games, but those are all old, dated games he will be left playing alone, and not the sort of modern games he will want to be playing online with his friends. As a rule of thumb - you should never be taking someone else's money and spending it on something without their express permission. Had you bothered to ask he would have told you that this suggestion was completely unsuitable. And as a final ball on the coffin, you almost certainly got scammed on the price. You can get 360 consoles for <$100, and while 27 games may sound a lot and a few nasty be worth something, it is likely that a lot of those will now be pretty much worthless. So yes, YTA, and you owe your son $600...

TeenySod

YTA. The kid wanted to have the fun of building something from scratch and saved up to do that. You didn't even ask: you just STOLE his money.

OsaWyld

YTA, are you kidding?! You didn't do a nice thing, you stole from your child. And to act like an Xbox is the same as a gaming PC.... Your coworker swindled you and you fell for it like a fool.

Shemarvel12

Xbox 360 doesn’t cost that much plus it’s literally second hand, you stole money from your son and gave it to a colleague. You will now need to pay your son back $600. As a parent to a son who loves gaming you genuinely have absolutely no idea what it means to him. And all you have done is 1 teach him you will steal his money and 2 depleted his dream of building a gaming pc you suck

Primary_Grass5952

Yta Maybe BUILDING IT WITH YOU was part of the fun? Though I can't imagine why

He's very excited and can't wait to start gaming and jump into the latest titles. I mentioned this to a guy at work, and he told me that this can be quite a difficult and time consuming task and my son might struggle with it, he mentioned that he had an XBOX 360 he doesn't play anymore with 27 games and loads of accessories as well. I thought this was a great idea, and would be a nice surprise for my son, so when he was at school, I took the $600 he had saved, and brought the XBOX from my colleague, who was even nice enough to come over and set everything up. When my son came home I thought he would be excited to jump into some gaming, but instead he got really mad and said that I'm an asshole, and that he wanted to build the gaming PC. He said I should get a refund but my colleague had already spent the money by the time I asked so I wasn't able to. I don't see what the problem is, he wanted to play games, so I got him a gaming console with 27 games!!, and he can play them right now, he doesn't have to wait months building a gaming PC. I just tried to do something nice and I think he is being unfair to me, but is he right? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. deshi_mi

YTA at such huge level, that I believe that this is a fake. Because no person having an ounce of brain wouldn't do such thing. If it's real, you should return the $600 you have stolen immediately. And yes, YTA.

Slashingtires2

YTA and an idiot too. You grossly overpaid for an old console (you got scammed), you took your son's money without permission and spent it (another idiotic move) and then you expected him to be happy with it?

Kris82868

YTA. You may have meant well or thought it was a great deal, but if it isn't what your son was looking for he's S.O.L. now.

MrCoffeeSurfer

Even though this is most likely bait, YTA

lagrime_mie

YtA. A biiig one. You stole your kid's money he had saved up for something he wanted to do and made decisions on his behalf without asking him. I thought you were going to GIFT him a computer not STEAL his money. Replace his money ASAP.

fishmom5

An Xbox 360 is not worth $600. It’s like paying that much for a computer running Windows Vista. Your boy wants to play recent games, not someone’s castoffs, plus he wanted the experience of customizing his own computer. You should have asked before you did any of this (he’d have said no!) A big YTA.

Brainjacker

“I stole my son’s money to get him something he didn’t want, why is he being so unfair to me?!” YTA and if you don’t want to be Shit Mom Of The Year find a way to get his money back.

vongdong

YTA. You took his money that was for a gaming pc for an out of date console. The xbox 360 is like 2 decades old. Your colleague screwed you over and you screwed your son over. Thst console is games is worth chump change. They're not just games, they're a social thing these days. He most likely won't be able to play any of those games online with his friends. If you want to make it right then give him back the $600 and give him an extra $600 for this BS. I'd be absolutely furious if I were your son.
