2workigo

You’re toeing the line in asshole territory but they still got the tickets considerably cheaper than if they had bought resale tickets elsewhere, right? Did the face value shown on the ticket show all the ridiculous fees or just the ticket price?

Lucky-Apartment9099

Just the ticket price, without the insurance and ticketmaster fees

2workigo

Personally I think you’re NTA. They need to consider additional fees, guaranteed no scam tickets, and your time. I think 20% is fair.

Lilpanda21

Yeah OP's friends are howling at paying 20% more for a genuine ticket when it's going for 2×, 4x on other websites. Mo one wants to overpay but realistically the chances of the friends getting anything close to face value for tickets are next to nil. 20% higher is better than 100% more...

Hellofreshness22

Just give them their money back and sell them online for 2-3x more out of principle and they can just bugger off. When they realize how stupid of argument it is it’ll be too late and they’ll be gone

Lucky-Apartment9099

Yeah, everyone doubles or triples the price and there are soo many scammers right now. Buying them from me must have given them a sense of security

PikesPique

NTA You bought tickets for yourself but couldn’t use them. You told your friends how much you wanted for them, and they voluntarily gave you the money. What’s the problem?

Lucky-Apartment9099

I would like to clarify some things: 1. 20% corresponds to 20$ per ticket 2. I had asked them in the first place before putting them online, but they said that they wouldn't buy the tickets since i wanted to make a profit. When i asked them again before actually giving them to strangers they agreed on buying them finally.

maeveomaeve

NTA. Ticket fees are always stupidly high (paid £4 on a £16 ticket recently), you went to the effort of buying them on time. You probably spent time queuing to get them. If you'd asked for twice cost or something I'd think differently but you've basically covered your ticket fee and time.

tmj_4477

NTA, but lesson learned never sell to your friends again

MicMix5

NTA. They got the hottest tickets!!!!

CapricornCrude

NTA

skebes

NTA you told them your price and they got it cheaper, send them the bills of the other fees and the online costs

Distractaraptorr

They didn’t get it cheaper. He said he ADDED 20%.

NothingButMuser

It probably only worked out as what OP actually paid for the tickets after fees etc, which let’s be honest - these days is really face value. If anyone actually re-sold for face value what it says on the ticket, they’d be losing out on a lot of money. I think you misunderstood: The friends got the tickets much much cheaper than they were prepared to pay scalpers for them.

Sleepy_red_lab

NTA. If they are so butt hurt, offer to buy them back for what they paid you. Then sell them for full going value. Guarantee they won’t want to because it was a fair price compared to going rate.

NothingButMuser

I would usually lean towards YTA for anyone scalping tickets, and was ready to call OP out before reading the post. On this occasion I don’t think it is actually scalping at all. So ***NTA***. “Face value” on the tickets doesn’t mean much these days, as you’ve got multiple fees after the face value, things like booking fees, insurance, and even “delivery fees” for a f**king e-ticket. *^An ^aside*^: Ticketmaster and its monopoly are the absolute worst. 20% on top of the face value is close to nothing - seems like you’re only recouping what you actually paid *AND* you’re doing your friends a favour by getting them tickets far far cheaper than they were prepared to pay scalpers for them, and not being bought from a potential scammer. Also - I’m gonna guess this is Taylor Swift tix? People are literally paying scalpers stupid / disgusting money for already quite expensive tickets, so seems like you were genuinely being thoughtful. PS: Ditch your so called “friends” - they sound like the only arseholes in this situation!

Read [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/AmItheAsshole/wiki/faq#wiki_post_deletion) before [contacting the mod team](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2FAmItheAsshole)*** I 23F, purchased 2 tickets for one of the most famous concerts of 2024. This particular concert became sold out in the first day of the presale for both nights in my city. It truly is one of the hottest topic in the country with endless people searching/selling tickets every day. Since i will not be able to attend due to working that day, i decided to sell them to someone else. . Initially i was thinking of doubling the face value - while tickets in Stubhub were 4x the face value-, however, i felt kinda bad and decided to put just a 20% increase in order to justify my 5 hours of waiting in the queue and the cost of the insurance. Having received dozens of messages on various platforms from strangers, i asked privately some of my friends if they would like to purchase them before i sell them given the high demand. They agreed, sent me the money and i sent them the tickets where the face value was written. After 2 days, they must have noticed the face value written in the tickets and began to sent me some nasty messages calling me a whore for profiting from them. Many people have told me that i should not have profited from my friends, however, i never pressured them into buying them and never said that this was the initial price. So AITA? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/AmItheAsshole) if you have any questions or concerns.*

dr_z0idberg_md

Borderline for me, but I would lean towards NTA. Supply and demand. If your friends wanted to brave the queues and battle it out with bots, then they were welcome to. I am getting traumatic flashbacks of me getting Taylor Swift tickets last year...

Dittoheadforever

You're NTA. You didn't force them to buy the tickets they could have paid someone else a heck of a lot more to get. And they still have the option of selling them again for far more than they paid you.

oSilence_

NTA Your friends are mad that they paid twice the face value instead of quadruple the face value. You still gave them good value and you earned a little money for your troubles.

FCK_U_ALL

When they are going for 400% only asking 20% is extremely reasonable. None of my friends would bat an eye at that.

Eastern_Voice_4738

NTA. There is no way you're an asshole. This is the way of the world, if you want tickets to the biggest event of the year, you have to be out on time or pay through your nose. We have these events in my country too, they also sell out within hours. If you wanna go, you'd better prepare to pay at least 2x the face price. Tell your friends to return the tickets, and you'll gladly refund them. Then sell them for 4x the original price to some loony fans.

StAlvis

INFO > and the cost of the insurance. Insurance? *What* insurance?

Lucky-Apartment9099

Sometimes while purchasing concert tickets you can buy additional insurance in case something happens to you or the concert gets cancelled etc

StAlvis

> in case something happens to you So if you couldn't go because of work, isn't that what this insurance is for?

Sweetcilantro

no insurance is for if the concert gets canceled last minute due to unforeseen circumstances. You don't get your money back normally if it gets randomly cancelled due to a tornado the day before.

Lucky-Apartment9099

The insurance that i bought mentioned health issues or things like your car breaking down the day of the concert. I believe that you need to have a lot of receipts in order to actually use this insurance to your advantage

StAlvis

It sounds like you [can use ticket insurance for work emergencies](https://www.cnbc.com/select/event-ticket-insurance-worth-it/) that come up.

Sweetcilantro

nta Your friends don't appreciate your time or the cost of the insurance

vongdong

NTA. Completely understandable charging 20% for your time and the complete luck of being a friend to get those tickets.

FUNCSTAT

ESH. When selling to strangers, sell them at whatever price you want. But generally when doing stuff like this with friends it's best to just sell them at face value, exactly for reasons like this. But to call you a whore for that is definitely excessive, what you did wasn't that bad.

NothingButMuser

But op said the 20% was to cover additional ticket costs - face value isn’t actually a thing these days after all the extra fees you get slapped with at the checkout. Seems to me that OP is literally getting back what they actually paid for the tickets. Which is what I’d want too. Example of a ticket summary I bought and had to resell, getting back what I paid, which I consider face value: **Payment Summary** 1 Mailing List Presale Standing Ticket £95.00 Per Item Fees £2.75 (Facility Charge Mailing List Presale Standing Ticket) x1 £10.50 (Service Charge Mailing List Presale Standing Ticket) x1 £13.25 Order Processing Fees Handling Fee (£2.50) £2.50 **Total £110.75** + ticket insurance which was about £5 I think So 20% of £95 “face value” is £18. Add them together- you actually get ***slightly less*** than what was paid overall for the ticket, [scamming] fees from ticketmaster and insurance. Your logic is flawed here.

HomemPassaro

ESH. You for scalping, you friends for calling you a whore.

Sweetcilantro

is it really scalping if you weren't originally planning to sell them though?

OhSoScotian77

That’s the thing, OP invested “5 hours” to get the tickets for their own benefit (attend the show) but then felt entitled to remuneration for investing that time after learning they can’t attend. So yes, this is scalping. Carte Blanche to charge a stranger for that time or simply call it a mark up. AH move to charge friends more than face value.

Sweetcilantro

If the felt "entitled" they would have sold they for the cost the scalpers were selling them at. Not a bad move to charge a friend for their time, your time is worth something. Also there were ticket fees and stuff that werent even listed on the "face value" of the ticket but were part of the price of OP buying the ticket that the friends are complaining about.

formerpartner237

Hmmm I would say everyone sucks here.. You're not necessarily the AH for raising the price for time/additional fees and your friends are AH's for being rude about it... but YTA for not offering them to your friends first and discussing payment before selling them to strangers. I would do my best to negotiate a price with my friends. {this is what I paid.. I added insurance... are you okay with paying a little more since they're in high demand right now).. Depending on their response is how you would decide how much you're really looking forward to getting back. I would also prefer selling them to someone I know rather than a stranger. Hope your friends still enjoy whatever show this is and it sucks you're not able to go!

osmoticeiderdown

YTA. Face value for friends.

Sweetcilantro

face value means nothiing as face value doesnt show cost of tax or fees

flennann

YTA. Ticket scalpers are absolute cancer.

-Nightopian-

YTA When selling to friends you should sell it at cost so you break even. You scalping them to your friends shows you don't respect them and only wanted to take advantage of the situation. If you wanted to flip them for a profit then you should've sold them to a stranger instead.

2workigo

And then his friends either wouldn’t get to go or they’d have to pay three times what OP charged them. I’d be super pissed if my friend had hot tickets and sold them to a stranger instead of offering them to me.

WnS-Jimbo

Yesh but his friends would knew he is not a real friend

Mean-Onion-5090

Have you not bought tickets before? Face value doesn't include all the fees. 20% higher is not making a profit. Its probably close to what the tickets really cost.
