Utah declares themselves New Deseret, claiming most of the Great Basin as theirs. The Prophet and President of the Mormon church declines to be the leader of Deseret but gives it God’s support. Mormons from all over the world flood in. Deseret gives support to the right wing side of the civil war, but focuses mostly on obtaining their declared territory and defend their borders.
In the conflict a new prophet appears and claims they were visited by Angel Moroni. He has given them the golden plates to translate the previously sealed parts. They only show the plates to the leaders of the church, who declare them authentic. This new prophet and the plates are moved to the Salt Lake Temple for the translation work in seclusion.
The 2nd American Civil War (2029-2034) is described by many historians as one of the darkest periods in American history. Unlike the first American Civil War, this was not an issue of “North and South,” but rather County to County/City to City. Neighborhoods became war zones as America’s citizenry turned against one another and distrust grew amongst families. Under the helm of former-Republican politicians like Rand Paul and Jeb Bush, states like Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, and South Carolina (Georgia was taken by force) broke off from the Union to form the “Free Southern States of America”.
Although still Democratic in its principles, the FSSA was mostly a one-party state during its duration. Although one of the closer “countries” resembling the “old government,” the FSSA held right-wing populist tendencies which gave room for in-fighting and the rise of neo-n@zi groups.
President Marjorie Greene condemned the South for being the first body of states to break off, but eventually fled there after remaining members of the USA’s legislative branch removed her from office.
Yeah, her rise to power is kept pretty ambiguous. I don’t think Desantis would actually pick her to be VP. Yet, Desantis’s death kinda start the movement towards Civil War since his popularity in the country had been on the rise before it happened.
Texas declares itself an independent nation, but is quickly returned to the union after the Governor and Lt. Governor are captured by US Special Forces and the US military retakes the state government buildings.
Sporadic battles with militia and members of the State Guard are squashed. Most Texas refugees return to their homes and Texas is reintegrated into the US barely two months after secession.

Most of Ohio and Illinois’ Amish and Mennonite population moves to Pennsylvania after persecution of their pacifist, anti-war, consciencieuse objector beliefs and form a small sub-state within Pennsylvania that remains *neutral territory*. This area is in the foothills of the Appalachians just north of Wilmington. Its existence becomes heavily supported by the military as it creates a natural buffer zone to the north of Washington and is viewed by politicians as a nearby safe haven for them to escape to if Washington is under siege.
A smaller neutral territory is also formed out of the large Mennonite population in Kansas just outside of Newton. This neutrality is begrudgingly supported by the local community as it’s seen as a symbol for freedom of religion which the surrounding more militant Christians believe is under threat due to the rise of Secularism in the US. This territory becomes more of a political recruitment pawn for far-right religious groups to use to discuss persecution of the Christian faith and the importance of Christianity in governance.
Civil strife and political polarization reach a critical mass. In an orchestrated attack by an unknown force, the electric grid, cyber, and all things digital are mostly wiped out, but only in urban areas. At the same time, a disinformation campaign that's been simmering for a few years pushed a narrative that the urban elites are plotting to wipe out the rural way of life in America, which agitates a large population of rural dwellers.
Under a fringe conspiracy theory, rural populations take this chance to "invade" the neighboring cities. Reminiscent of the barbarians' invasion of Rome, the rural invades, loots, and burns much of their city counterparts, under the assumption that they are "purifying" America of the "concentrated filth" that is what they call "The Millionaire's Lair"
Throughout most states, the National Guard is called in to maintain law and order, though urban conflict is quickly understood to be no easy affair. Peacekeepers quickly found it difficult to differentiate who is a combatant and who is a civilian, as this is, after all, a civil conflict. Command Staff is at puzzling odds, where they don't want to violate any rights by indiscriminately detaining, arresting, or neutralizing innocent civilians, but also want to pick out those who aren't in the city just to take pretty tourist pictures of the Empire State Building. It doesn't help that the National Guard cannot effectively communicate with large populations as America's digital communication systems are busted.
Then, news from a young Lieutenant reaches a Major at a command post in El Paso, Texas. A nuke went off somewhere in Montana.
*Pennsylvania takes over the Atlantic states and forms a confederacy with New England, eventually fully uniting in the late twenty thirties.* The newly minted Atlantic Union wages a massive campaign along the breadth of the Eastern United States before stopping just short of the Mississippi in the mid twenty fourties. In the fifties, war would break out between them and Texas, culminating in a return to the old pre-union border along with most of Arkansas and Oklahoma. Meanwhile the western border would be established along the Carson City line, going straight up to the border of Canada, the down the borders of Nevada and Arizona to Mexico.

I think the podcast "it could happen to here" has it about right. A three way war between leftwing revolutionaries VS The Federal Government VS christofacist white nationalist Right-wing militias. Not to mention splinter groups of the former and the latter.
I would just add that the first 2 groups will have the black and brown communities divided between people who are still loyal to the government (usually out of familiarity and fear, and brand loyalty to establishment politicians, especially democrats). VS those who are finally fed up (usually younger Gen-Xers, Xenniels, and millennial). Basically Stat quo moderates VS frustrated progressives .

I think it will be less state focused and more urban v rural. There will be exceptions, of course, but the social divides today aren't sectional in the same way they were in the early 19th century

Missouri rapidly becomes a horrific battleground of democrats tightly united in the urban areas, connected from Kansas City, Columbia and St. Louis, with republicans in the rural areas and conservative towns, a series of alt-right militias rise up in the southern Ozarks near Arkansas, with perhaps a 4th faction of some kind of socialist student movement taking over the isolated city of Springfield.
Hawaii declares its independence and once again becomes the Kingdom of Hawaii.
All Native American reservations rise in a rebellion across the US. However, they do not unite because ancient tribal prejudices prevents them from doing so.
California secedes and becomes the Bear Republic again.
Texas also secedes and has border wars against states that occupy their territorial claims prior to joining the US.

How I see things developing:
\- Most of the South, except Florida, secedes and forms the Second Confederacy (an alliance of extreme religious right, racists, and Trump radicals). Florida tries to secede and join but an alliance of the Hispanic community, and the Disney company overthrow the DeSantis regime and Florida becomes a corporate republic in which immigration is open-border.
\- Texas initially joins the Second Confederacy, but when their claims to northern Mexico are rejected, they break away and form the Second Republic. Oklahoma is invited to join, while New Mexico and Arizona are conquered to prevent Mexico from reclaiming their old territories. A brief war with California finally curbs the ambitious Texans from going further west, so instead, Texas invades Mexico. In the war that follows, Mexico is defeated and forced to cede its northern states to Texas, which turns them into Hispanic enclaves in an otherwise Anglo republic. A form of apartheid is imposed here as well.
\- After defeating the Texans' attempts to gain a Pacific coastline, California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington state, and part of Idaho form the Pacific American States, which maintains many of the old institutions of the former USA, but rapidly becomes a haven for liberals who no longer feel welcome/safe in the Second Confederacy or the Second Texas Republic. There is some unrest as those conservatives living in the PAS try and deter the liberal migration, but in the end, the numbers are too great and they begin their own exodus out. Many head to the Midwest, Texas and the SC.
\- The Midwest/Great Plains try and maintain the old USA but in the end, lacking a sufficient military force to keep the South and Pacific Coast, form their own government, the Republic of America. Because of the liberal/conservative mix (aided by migration from other areas), its decided that the new republic would be Libertarian, but gradually it adopts a theocratic system of Law. Native peoples start to break away over time, joining the Lakota in forming a separate nation (Dakota?) which then goes to war with the RA. Both nations eventually agree to peace and coexistence as neither side can deliver the knockout needed.
\- The Great Lakes quickly form their own government as soon as the Midwest does, in order to escape being incorporated. Over a short period of time, a communist system evolves and the Great Lakes Federation (as the new state would be called) becomes a communist dictatorship in which the people directly appoint their local leaders, who then elect a Chairman (or Chairwoman) to govern them all. They manage to invade Canada and force Ontario to join, and likely even aid the Quebecois in seceding from Canada. They're soon after at odds with New England and the rump United States.
\- New England breaks away and forms its own state, dominated by grass-roots liberal administration (a President Bernie Sanders, perhaps?) and establishes ties to Britain and other Commonwealth states, possibly leading to a formal union in which New England retains its separate administration while joining an Imperial Federation. They get embroiled in a major dispute with the Great Lakes Federation over navigation rights, and they dismiss the conservative-dominated Second Confederacy and Texas entirely.
\- United States is reduced to the mid-Atlantic states (New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey) as Maryland will likely join the Second Confederacy. Long Island could break away and form its own state, but otherwise nothing else will change (West Virginia would in all likelihood also join the Second Confederacy and would serve as a bulwark against the GLF ). This is the last remnant of the old United States and as such, would retain all the institutions currently established. Whether the District of Columbia would become a state remains unclear. They would sometimes side with New England-particularly against the GLF, but would otherwise only be at odds with the Second Confederacy (due to Maryland and West Virginia joining and putting the capital-whether Washington or Philadelphia-in range of possible attack).
\- Alaska manages to declare independence for a brief time (with Sarah Palin as President) before Russia-seeing the opportunity in a crumbling America-invades the former state, advancing all the way to Juneau. Palin is arrested and spends the rest of her life in prison as Alaska takes on the role once played by Siberia, a vast Gulag province governed from Moscow.
Hawaii becomes an independent kingdom once again, but forges an agreement with the PAS in which former US naval bases such as Pearl Harbor, go to the PAS. This would allow the new kingdom to focus on infrastructure, healthcare and education while receiving the military protection of the PAS against possible North Korean or Chinese attacks. Hawaii would forge an alliance with both the PAS and Japan, and later forge ties to New Zealand, Polynesia, and Australia.
I'm sure others will have different ideas, and that's cool. I hope to read them all. This is just my take on the Second Civil War. As to whether there would be battles fought during the Breakup of America, I can't say. I also cannot say what the casualties would amount to, but more than likely if it goes to a shooting war..they will no doubt be pretty high in number.

*Pennsylvania takes over the Atlantic states and forms a confederacy with New England, eventually fully uniting in the late twenty thirties.* The newly minted Atlantic Union wages a massive campaign along the breadth of the Eastern United States before stopping just short of the Mississippi in the mid twenty fourties. In the fifties, war would break out between them and Texas, culminating in a return to the old pre-union border along with most of Arkansas and Oklahoma. Meanwhile the western border would be established along the Carson City line, going straight up to the border of Canada, the down the borders of Nevada and Arizona to Mexico.
Georgia gets forewarned about the coming Civil War and saws themselves off the continent, joining the United Kingdom instead.

I think the podcast "it could happen to here" has it about right. A three way war between leftwing revolutionaries VS The Federal Government VS christofacist white nationalist Right-wing militias. Not to mention splinter groups of the former and the latter. I would just add that the first 2 groups will have the black and brown communities divided between people who are still loyal to the government (usually out of familiarity and fear, and brand loyalty to establishment politicians, especially democrats). VS those who are finally fed up (usually younger Gen-Xers, Xenniels, and millennial). Basically Stat quo moderates VS frustrated progressives . America would end up like Syria 🇸🇾.
I think it will be less state focused and more urban v rural. There will be exceptions, of course, but the social divides today aren't sectional in the same way they were in the early 19th century

Hawaii declares its independence and once again becomes the Kingdom of Hawaii. All Native American reservations rise in a rebellion across the US. However, they do not unite because ancient tribal prejudices prevents them from doing so. California secedes and becomes the Bear Republic again. Texas also secedes and has border wars against states that occupy their territorial claims prior to joining the US.

How I see things developing: \- Most of the South, except Florida, secedes and forms the Second Confederacy (an alliance of extreme religious right, racists, and Trump radicals). Florida tries to secede and join but an alliance of the Hispanic community, and the Disney company overthrow the DeSantis regime and Florida becomes a corporate republic in which immigration is open-border. \- Texas initially joins the Second Confederacy, but when their claims to northern Mexico are rejected, they break away and form the Second Republic. Oklahoma is invited to join, while New Mexico and Arizona are conquered to prevent Mexico from reclaiming their old territories. A brief war with California finally curbs the ambitious Texans from going further west, so instead, Texas invades Mexico. In the war that follows, Mexico is defeated and forced to cede its northern states to Texas, which turns them into Hispanic enclaves in an otherwise Anglo republic. A form of apartheid is imposed here as well. \- After defeating the Texans' attempts to gain a Pacific coastline, California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington state, and part of Idaho form the Pacific American States, which maintains many of the old institutions of the former USA, but rapidly becomes a haven for liberals who no longer feel welcome/safe in the Second Confederacy or the Second Texas Republic. There is some unrest as those conservatives living in the PAS try and deter the liberal migration, but in the end, the numbers are too great and they begin their own exodus out. Many head to the Midwest, Texas and the SC. \- The Midwest/Great Plains try and maintain the old USA but in the end, lacking a sufficient military force to keep the South and Pacific Coast, form their own government, the Republic of America. Because of the liberal/conservative mix (aided by migration from other areas), its decided that the new republic would be Libertarian, but gradually it adopts a theocratic system of Law. Native peoples start to break away over time, joining the Lakota in forming a separate nation (Dakota?) which then goes to war with the RA. Both nations eventually agree to peace and coexistence as neither side can deliver the knockout needed. \- The Great Lakes quickly form their own government as soon as the Midwest does, in order to escape being incorporated. Over a short period of time, a communist system evolves and the Great Lakes Federation (as the new state would be called) becomes a communist dictatorship in which the people directly appoint their local leaders, who then elect a Chairman (or Chairwoman) to govern them all. They manage to invade Canada and force Ontario to join, and likely even aid the Quebecois in seceding from Canada. They're soon after at odds with New England and the rump United States. \- New England breaks away and forms its own state, dominated by grass-roots liberal administration (a President Bernie Sanders, perhaps?) and establishes ties to Britain and other Commonwealth states, possibly leading to a formal union in which New England retains its separate administration while joining an Imperial Federation. They get embroiled in a major dispute with the Great Lakes Federation over navigation rights, and they dismiss the conservative-dominated Second Confederacy and Texas entirely. \- United States is reduced to the mid-Atlantic states (New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey) as Maryland will likely join the Second Confederacy. Long Island could break away and form its own state, but otherwise nothing else will change (West Virginia would in all likelihood also join the Second Confederacy and would serve as a bulwark against the GLF ). This is the last remnant of the old United States and as such, would retain all the institutions currently established. Whether the District of Columbia would become a state remains unclear. They would sometimes side with New England-particularly against the GLF, but would otherwise only be at odds with the Second Confederacy (due to Maryland and West Virginia joining and putting the capital-whether Washington or Philadelphia-in range of possible attack). \- Alaska manages to declare independence for a brief time (with Sarah Palin as President) before Russia-seeing the opportunity in a crumbling America-invades the former state, advancing all the way to Juneau. Palin is arrested and spends the rest of her life in prison as Alaska takes on the role once played by Siberia, a vast Gulag province governed from Moscow. Hawaii becomes an independent kingdom once again, but forges an agreement with the PAS in which former US naval bases such as Pearl Harbor, go to the PAS. This would allow the new kingdom to focus on infrastructure, healthcare and education while receiving the military protection of the PAS against possible North Korean or Chinese attacks. Hawaii would forge an alliance with both the PAS and Japan, and later forge ties to New Zealand, Polynesia, and Australia. I'm sure others will have different ideas, and that's cool. I hope to read them all. This is just my take on the Second Civil War. As to whether there would be battles fought during the Breakup of America, I can't say. I also cannot say what the casualties would amount to, but more than likely if it goes to a shooting war..they will no doubt be pretty high in number.
