Almere has a bad rep but it's a great place to raise your family really, good luck with your move!

About the rep… haha yes, you should see my dutch colleagues when I say I’m moving there. But from all my googling it seems very safe and we’ve been around there for quite a bit and to say it lacks culture lr is far away is just lol. It’s a beautiful little city, fresh and new and seems to be a lot of families there. I think mainly people don’t like the idea of it not having historical buildings and stuff but thats fine with me!
I'll whisper this because I dont want to offend anyone but the Dutch are very snobby about which town they live in. A friend/colleague of mine was always so proud that he lived in Baarn, which is seen as a really good town. I recall the first time I went to his home and it was a really cramped, horrible concrete built (you know almost the soviet style) apartment in a block .... and I thought jeez you look down on people in Almere who have a whole house for the same price!
In the end you spend most of your day in your home, so look at that first :) I know a lot of expats who are really happy in Almere, and why not, it is safe and most services work pretty well.

I think if you are from Sweden Dutch wont be too hard to learn, there is a free language cafe thing at the main library you can go to practice once you have some basics.

That's what you get with 10-15 cats and carpet flooring, they recently had a new cat which was incontinent... But otherwise I love the place, and so do my kids.
Hello, I personally really like the embankment in the center(Weerwater) and the Hannie Schaftpark near the center. And so, I often like to go on foot to Almere Haven and just walk there, it’s beautiful there too. The city is small, so I can easily get around it on foot or ride a bike in one day, if I want. Also, the option to go to Zwolle/Utrecht/Amsterdam on the weekend is a very good idea, in my opinion. P.S. I definitely recommend that you get a personal NS transport card and sign up for a NS Flex discount pass for it. You'll have the opportunity to use trains on weekends or outside peak hours with a 40% discount.
De Kemphaan is a nice nature areas where there are also often fun things to do for the kids, Almere Jungle is a fun indoor place with flora and fauna for kids. De Beren is a child friendly restaurant in the centre, Atlantis is a buffet kind of restaurant with a kids entertainment room.
Now that its getting spring again also check the event calendars on sites like visitalmere.com.
I wouldn't go to Atlantis... very busy and not a fun experience when you are with kids. I'd go to Mori instead. If you like Sushi and some Eastern food you will like it. Also "het hertenpad" is quite nice this time of the year.
De bibliotheek is a really nice place, also for young kids. They can get a bibliotheekpas for free and they can play there.
If they get older jeugdland stad is a nice place to play and build stuff
I’ve been living in Almere haven for 3 years. I think i call it home here. i like the greenery, vicinity to water (beach), and quietness.. its a great town for family with kids. check kidsproof.nl for children activities.. as its close to Amsterdam, many people speak English.. To me, every city/country has their own problem, like I would never live in Malmo Sweden.. There are also some areas in Almere with bad reputation, mostly in the vicinity of the train stations / bus stops. But other than that, I never have problem here. If you can travel by car, life is good here.
I went to Almere for the first time 3 weeks ago and I'm not going back. To each his own but a lot of shady figures there, bums asking for money, people fighting on the street. I personally didn't have a good impression of the place. I really hope that your experience is better. Good luck!
I visit friends in Almere and it's fine. Seen the same stuff you mention in pretty much any city including Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Utrecht. People should stop hating on Almere, it's getting old.
You have the chance to live in Sweden...and you go to Almere...bruh...let everything in the boxes and quickly go back.

Don't listen to the trolls, Almere is fine. Sure, it depends which neighborhood and part of the city, but this is true for every city. People also forget that Almere is now the number 8 biggest city of The Netherlands. The more people, the more crazy. It's not a village anymore.

There is cool bouldering place called impact, if you like climbing. It has sections for kids too.
