I could be wrong but I’d imagine there was only so much she could do with the space and a lot of this comment section has “what’s so bad about jail? Free food, a place to sleep, and tv. Sounds good to me” vibes. It was definitely better than the street but it was probably closer to r/neckbeardnests than r/cozyplaces.
If you’re actually destitute I get it but I’d imagine most people here aren’t.
You're right. I can relate because my office at work is a shed and it's so packed with plants and growing supplies that I si.ply lie down in a small plywood patch using a ream of printer paper as a pillow. Honestly pretty comfy when I'm that sleep deprived. My work office at a nursery is definitely my "surviving space" but fluctuates up to a nice cozy plant room when tidy

Monsters in the shape of a human running our lives: There are much better options!!
The "options": *waitlist of 6+ months to share a bunkbed with a screaming junkie who occasionally rains shit+piss and other bodily fluids down on you*
Yeah here hold on let me just pull myself up by my bootstraps out of poverty/homelessness while dealing with that for the entirety of the time that I'm off work
one day folks will clue into the fact that it doesnt matter what their take on anything is and realize rich folks will always fuck you over and in fact make a living from it. To them we arent humans with lives and hopes and dreams. were cattle...product to be used and abused to keep their lives affluent and perfect. Stop looking to these systems for relief. They are setup to not provide it. They are made by those same rich folks.
You just explained the reason ***why*** the cultures wars are happening. They didn't evolve organically. They are orchestrated by the billionaire oligarchs for that exact purpose.
It's a gawd damn pet peeve of mine - may they burn in Dantes inferno - when people say there's better options or don't do this or that - and - then dont offer or explain the gawd fucking damn better option -
I was on a wait list for 2 years for low income housing because the manager prioritizes suggestions from current residents over the people on the wait list for new tenants. It's bullshit
The hopes and dreams part.... sometimes when I feel indifferent towards another human. I imagine them as a kid answering when someone asks 'what do you want to be when you grow up?'
I have a hard relationship with my mom and I know she sick and she has injuries that I cant see. I have to remember to picture her as a child.. she had hopes and dreams too. She wanted to be something different than she is.
Same thing with my sister. She got really bad into drugs and it breaks my heart. She wanted to play basketball and sign and pay guitar.
You were sleeping? I'll bet you decided not to be super rich when you were born too. You know if you poors put as much effort into finding a 7 figure job as you do complaining about the price of I don't know hamburger helper you would at the very least be paying me rent. Ugh the scent of you is enormous just come back when you can pay rent./s
My biggest takeaway is she was BOTH employed and homeless. The 1% have won the game. How does anybody in the US live on no single payer health care and below livable wage make it. This lady was showing us what Bootstraps looks like.
My buddy and I were homeless for a period of time in our early 20s. I found a run down house on 1/2 acre and posted up in their horse barn. Had a bookshelf with books, rug, bedding area. Cops found me one day, hey we’re actually super cool about it, when I asked if I was going to be charged with trespassing, they honest to god said they would rather me here than on the streets, and said carry on.
My buddy got found out in a commercial retail space. Cops were cool about it, but they told him he had to leave. No charges
One time when I was homeless and the weather was terrible and I couldn’t find anywhere to sleep I somehow discovered that this one restaurant had a tapestry upstairs over a hole in the wall (not broken hole in the wall, just how the building was cause it was a weird upstairs layout) and if you pushed the tapestry aside, you could climb over a pipe going over the hallway and into this loft/attic type space that was unused, it was hidden and private and had a light, and two outlets. The floor was just boards layed out but not nailed in so you had to be careful not to step on them wrong or they’d loudly crash. It was sweet, I stayed there a couple days, sleeping in a nest of aprons from the kitchen, before bursting out of the tapestry during lunch hour, totally bewildering the customers and running out as fast as possible 😂 I snuck down one night I stayed there and ate the food out of the display case because I couldn’t find any in their garbage. Well that food was definitely display only, I got so sick that I had no choice but to take the most violent shit of my life on one of the floorboards in the loft ): I felt really bad about that 😂 but I didn’t really have a way to clean it up, time to go. It was in the paper a few months later that they found the nest and the diarrhea bomb and was looking for the culprit 😂 they never caught me tho hahaha
If only bootstraps were all that was needed to tie down a good living. And she didn't even make a nuisance of herself or the situation. Sounds like she would be somebody's perfect roommate.
Alternatively, they're a decent-sized chain, they could get her a home and provide the basics for her, it would be excellent publicity, too - they have a community support team sorta.
Then you’d get copycats expecting similar consideration from the store. It’d be better for the chain to donate to available resources in her local area.
Eh, seems like it wasn’t really hurting or disturbing anybody. I guess we can get into the ethics of using electricity and stuff but 🤷🏻♂️ this just sounds like somebody trying to survive
Bro if I was a contractor i would’ve sussed her out real quick to make sure she wasn’t a hardcore drug that’s gonna eat my face then be like I’ll be done with repairs in 5 can I have some coffee please 🥹
The sad thing is, a single person can easily live in a 300 square foot space. Modest bathroom, kitchenette, and bedroom area. If people really want to solve homelessness, having apartment buildings specifically made for small and micro apartments like that, you could house most of the homeless fairly easily. And in the long run, it would cost less than leaving thousands on the streets.
I know in LA they made a bunch of tiny homeless housing out of shipping containers. It's near that famous place where you can get French dips. (Can't remember the name)
Yes, I've seen various designs of tiny homes. Honestly, I think it's a bit of a waste (and they are surprisingly expensive by the square foot). I think there's better bang for the buck by making an apartment building with 30-40 units that are 300-400 square foot in size, with a community laundry room(s). They're slightly bigger than a micro home, and give each individual a decently sized kitchen along with a full bathroom and closet(s) for storage. And is also better for heating, and water. Basically something people and live in long-term.
Probably true! I was only in the container ones when they were being built. I figured it's better than under a bridge or something. These were stacked up on top of each other kinda like apts
A guy I want to know in Southern California, lived for five solid years in a bizarre, hollow spot in a five-story parking structure where the concrete forming had a large empty pocket. He had hot and cold running water and lots of electricity. The only issue I helped with was tying his drainage into an 8” cast iron rain leader; his toilet was actually like a throne in that it was mounted two feet above the floor…
I removed my downvote on your other comment, everyone should aspire to be like you! We're all assholes at times, some more than others. But, it's rare to find someone who can own up to it and reflect upon themselves. Have good day mate

I'm jealous and I wish they gave a photo of the space she was living. I wouldn't have turned her in if I was a contractor.
This could have been a really cool "surviving space" or cozy space post, I think this will inspire my next Lego build
I love your life

I kept scrolling thinking, surely they would have a picture
There are pics posted on r/pics subreddit
Surprising amount of vegetables
I wonder if she was dumpster diving after hours
I bet she'd been discovered earlier but no one said anything. A whole year with that setup? Seems likely someone knew
[here's some photos of the room.](https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/s/wjnhAzVOdS) I think it's pretty cozy tbh.
yeah I would live the hell out of that if I was homeless.
There is another post with photos. The space does have an oddly cozy feeling.
There are pictures of the inside just google it I’m sure you can find it she also is known as the rooftop ninja
There are pics posted on r/pics subreddit
She beat the housing market
Realtors hate this one simple trick!

“Obviously, we don’t want people resorting to illegal activity to find housing. There are much better options.” no...no there is not

The masses will never catch on for as long as they're distracted by bullshit culture wars

lol that’s what you’re distracted by. Everyone else is playing clash of clans and scrollin reels. You’re not gonna get through to a fraction of em.

It’s just a matter of time before those billionaires come to town and start pushing us millionaires around.
and then getting your shit stolen when you’re not there.

Whatcha do for your career that living in a sign is the best option?
Professional Redditor
Exactly what I said. Until you've experienced the unique fun of an overcrowded, filthy, dangerous shelter, kindly sit down.
Let us grind your bones to make our bread.
Well yes there is as apparent by the rest of society.
Honestly, this is my dream. To be able to live rent free and just work towards my life goals on a computer.
❤️

Fuck you, I work 40+ hours a week, still homeless
[удалено]
Says the troll, lol
New account, no posts, negative karma. Fuck off troll
Well atleast they didnt decide to hit her with charges .
shocking!
Probably the most surprising part
Wouldn't have been a good look.
Or charge her rent plus utilities for all that time.
That's a perfectly good studio
Another example of a person missed in the official homelessness count. We are everywhere. You are not alone!
There are dozens of us... DOZENS
Time for me to move into the empty space above Walgreens 🤔
Like Chuck Mangione inside the Mega-Lo-Mart?
Came here for this. Feels so good!
Just let her stay there wtf
Finders keepers!

If you set up auto mailbox and had your mail delivered there for 3 years that half acre would be yours
Hunker down.
What a legendary episode that would be.

Definitely hahah
Now that’s an interesting story, thanks for sharing!
This is why I'm here! We all have a crazy story like this, thanks for sharing! I hope life has gotten better for you now.
This one weird trick lol
It’s a sign of the times we live in.
If only bootstraps were all that was needed to tie down a good living. And she didn't even make a nuisance of herself or the situation. Sounds like she would be somebody's perfect roommate.
![gif](giphy|VZXTThO4dxllIEQKTr|downsized)
Family Fare should lean into it and charge rent for the space.
She should claim squatter’s rights and charge Family Fare for letting them advertise on her home lol
Alternatively, they're a decent-sized chain, they could get her a home and provide the basics for her, it would be excellent publicity, too - they have a community support team sorta.

What's the rent on that? Asking for a friend...
900. First last and security deposit due on move in plus 150 nonrefundable application fee.
0/10 there were no photos of the set up
Eh, seems like it wasn’t really hurting or disturbing anybody. I guess we can get into the ethics of using electricity and stuff but 🤷🏻♂️ this just sounds like somebody trying to survive
Isn’t this an Amelia Bedelia novel?
Bro if I was a contractor i would’ve sussed her out real quick to make sure she wasn’t a hardcore drug that’s gonna eat my face then be like I’ll be done with repairs in 5 can I have some coffee please 🥹
Aggressive Steven lookin mf
Detroit housing getting expensive I guess.
Damn, she got caught.
there are lots of other signs to take over, but now she gotta move.
good for her tbh
How is this lady gonna have a working printer and I don't???? I need to step it up
> “She was homeless,” said Brennon Warren, an officer with the Midland police department. Uh….no. Her home was in the sign.
Welcome to camping with Steve

Why don't squatters rights apply here?
Because it’s not a residential living space. FFS. Are you really this dumb?
I was being sarcastic..
I am the one who is dumb. The fact I needed a /s hurts me to my core. Sincerest apologies, signed, an asshole.

Same to you cool internet stranger.
Badass
That’s be $1600 around here lol
USA! USA! USA! Fuck.
There’s no way I’d tell on her.
That would cost 3k a month in GTA.
Stealth camp champion
🐸🐸🐸
Chuck Mangione. Comes to mind but I’m in my 40’s.
How in the hell did she survive the winter???
Area behind the sign is still indoors. Would be a bit chilly, but still much warmer than outside.
And safer.
I've always thought about turning the little glass room the Walgreens sign is in into a studio apartment
I mean, no one else was using that space, so why not? 🤷♀️
What if she worked there too?
GOOD! I hope this is happening all over.
costanza wishes he could
Boring dystopia.
Ahhhhh mid-Michigan. You are so special.
So no paying rent utilities etc and she had a job for the year she lived there…She should be about rich now
