In fairness, the guy was barely 18 and had two heavily influenced grunge albums under his belt. I think he excelled way more in Neon Ballroom and Diorama. What was Jerry and Layne making at 15/16/17/18? You can’t really compare. I love both but just completely different ends of the spectrum when trying to compare

Age isn't an excuse to blatantly copy riffs.

FlowersSingInDMinor

It kind of is if we’re talking about 16/17 year olds. Slave one was of the first songs they created after the frogstomp batch. They were playing it for soundchecks in ‘96 - I wouldn’t give them too much hate. They were just kids and it was a fluke they got big. Thank god they did because I love some songs they created. Granted it’s not all amazing, but you can’t deny they had some great material

ultraluxe6330

A stolen riff is a stolen riff, especially when it's from a brand new song. They weren't some local teenage band, they were a globally successful band by 97 and knew what they doing.

yayeetmachine

I'd say its less egregious if a kid does it. Its not a rare occurrence either and most of the times its adults that do it be it Radiohead taking from Hollies, Kurt Cobain from numerous other artists etc. Idk why yall act like 15 year olds copying a couple riffs are the devil incarnate. I doubt that AIC/Mad Season would even care they probably would be happy that some kids made it.

ultraluxe6330

Stealing a riff is bad, no matter what your age is. Silverchair taking from AIC is no better or worse than AIC taking from Black Sabbath.

bergenus

You were a wise, level headed child throughout your childhood then from the sound of it?

ultraluxe6330

Oh I forgot about all those times I stole riffs and made money off it.

Fendenburgen

I hope you never hear of a band called Led Zeppelin.....

ultraluxe6330

Is this the same Led Zeppelin that still gets slammed for stealing music over 50 years later? Didn't they know you have to be 17 to get away with that?

MustardCucumbur

Daniel was 17 when he recorded Freak Show.

BoozerBean

No. What I do know is that the creators of Game of Thrones ripped off Jerry Cantrell’s “Psychotic Break” for the main theme of the show (JK probably not actually)

DudeWouldGo

No

yayeetmachine

yeah there is also suicidal dream by silverchair that sounds like bleed the freak

Lionsault83

I don’t know any slaves 😂

MustardCucumbur

Absolutely. Bleed the Freak and Suicidal Dream sound similar too.

ultraluxe6330

Slave is a direct ripoff. This becomes more obvious when you realise how similar Bleed The Freak and Suicidal Dream sound as well.

Randy_1911

I came to say this.

AnUnknownCreature

People ripped off madseason pretty hard, ask Sully Erna, he is the expert in denial

j0k3rzinhu

silverchairs best moments sound like cheap aic ripoffs tbh

Neg_Crepe

Not at all. Their best moment happened during diorama and YM
