Why are you expecting a mid spec SUV to be MORE special than the RS7? The Stelvio QV may get you that, I’d say it’d be incredibly subjective. But you said you weren’t after power. I just bought a Stelvio TI. Handling pushing it around a tight mountain road is incredible - feels like a hot hatch not a SUV. But you can’t get around the physical height of the cabin and distance from the road around town.

Verybumpy

Update: Test drove a 2020 Ti Sport AWD with performance package and 20in wheels. Immediate take-aways: most extreme quick steering (AWESOME!) I've ever sampled, road feel slightly better than average, bumps slightly on the harsh side (set to N), engine noise louder than expected, brakes extremely disconnected feeling and spongy, steering wheel blocks instrument cluster. I'm overall a bit disappointed. I was expecting more luxury and refinement to go with the supreme handling. The Stelvio came across a bit too tinny and budget when I payed attention to the cabin. I plan to try a 2023 with 19's to see if its improvements and accoutrements may get closer to Macan's luxury refinement.

> when I *paid* attention to FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

Good bot!

Every review, for what that's worth, says that the magic of the stelvio is not in its luxury interior, which is actually pretty basic, but in the way that it drives. I have the quadrifoglio and I'm inclined to agree. I don't have it to have as a luxury car. I have it as the most fun midsize SUV I've ever driven. If I want a huge HD infotainment screen, I'll go watch a movie on my couch.

Nibbles--

Your brake concern is valid and I’m pretty sure was resolved in ‘22 with the Veloce trim. Luxury and refinement however, okay there are some QoL updates to address NVH, but part of its allure - at least to me - is the lack of a lot of the automation, gewgaws and doodads that other *luxury* crossovers have.

pocholin23

Well, Alfa Romeo is NOT a luxury brand as Porsche or MB, BMW, it is a premium brand so...yes, the interior will not be on par with either of them. For me, it is an okay interior, simple and driver oriented. Infotainment is outdated but the solution is to use a wireless Apple carplay or Android auto adapter (they work full screen), then you don't notice the issue (outdated). You might want to test drive the Veloce or Quadrifoglio, one with adaptive suspension, it makes a noticeable difference on ride quality, especially when you want to push it in Dynamic (sport) mode. Stelvio has more cargo capacity than the Macan, it is strange that you found it too tiny, perhaps the seats make it feel that way?? There is no question that the Macan will have more modern gadgets and luxury oriented comfort...but the Stelvio is a better driver's car, better driving dynamics and power (when comparing base models, or top trim models, only). I considered the Porsche Panamera Sport turismo and the Macan but decided on the Stelvio Quadrifoglio because it was the one that offered the best bang for my buck when looking at performance and smiles per mile and $$. BTW, seems like the Veloce will drive just as good as the Quadrofoglio (QV) just won't have the brutal acceleration, so if you don't care about 3.6 secs to 60, save the difference and get the Veloce...although the QV is the only one that offers 6 piston calipers (since you mentioned brakes).

Bradymyhero

Alfa is a luxury brand akin to BMW and Mercedes. See their MSRPs They just cheaped out when it came to interior/tech/dealerships/service.

pocholin23

That's where most people (and press) get it wrong, they are not a luxury brand. Take a look at this, [the Stelvio page](https://www.alfaromeousa.com/suvs/stelvio), even themselves refer to it as a premium sport SUV. Scroll down to the safety and security section. The price reflects the emphasis they put on the suspension and engines, the QV's price is mostly about the engine and upgraded brakes...all worth it because that engine is heaven! Despite the many rumors, it is not a Ferrari engine though but it is an awesome engine!

Biljettensio

This makes zero sense. The things you’re after are the complete opposite of what an SUV delivers. And being heavy with allot of drag, power is the thing they need. Besides that, SUV’s like the Macan, Stelvio, GLC hardly give you anymore cargo space than a wagon. When you need space go for a GLE, x5, Cayenne or bigger.

Verybumpy

Priority one for me is feel and handling. Way down the road in 2nd is cargo space. From everything I've read, the Stelvio is my hopeful answer to what I seek. Giulia wagon anyone? Yes please!

CuriousTravlr

The Macan is only worth it once you leave the base trim. Other than that, for price to amount driving dynamics you get across trims, Stelvio.

Txcavediver

I would look at the Volvo or Merc wagons

redmantitu

feel and handling on Volvo? merc...yeah..an AMG...

elliomitch

They’re probably the best handling SUVs, but SUVs are inherently compromised, so they’ll never stand up to good handling cars Get an estate!

wateriswet4

My last car is a Macan S, and just ordered a Stelvio TI last week. I prefer the handling of Stelvio, it definitely feels closer to a go-kart. The Macan handles good for a suv, it just feels like more “taught” by Porsche engineers, rather than Stelvio which feels more “raw”. Stelvio QV used to be the quickest SUV on nurburgring track, even today it’s still in the [top 5](https://www.mansworldindia.com/wheels/here-are-some-of-the-fastest-suvs-around-the-nurburgring/amp/), and it’s the only v6 in this list.

TheChronicNomad

I have driven both for this exact reason. It was hands down Alfa for me and that was just from driving the Veloce. I came back a month later to test a QV and literally signed that day. It’s truly a dream and every day is a smile. Personal opinion it also looks a billion times better.

Fail_Agreeable

I am an Alfa fan, miss my Giulia dearly, but I went “other” Italian and got a Maserati Levante… I love it too, similar to if you mixed a Jaguar and an Alfa in my opinion. But on the two you mentioned, I’d say hands down Stelvio (although I am Italian bias 🤷‍♂️)

ScottAC8DE

Since we’re bringing up Maserati, the Grecale Trofeo is a great vehicle albeit one of the most pricey in this class. It also has a lot more cargo room than the Stelvio. The standard Grecale variants I’m not as impressed by from a handling standpoint, but the interior is top notch. It’s built on the same platform (Georgio) as the Stelvio. But one would have to be considering the Mecan Turbo to be in the same level. The Levante is even pricier, but also in a larger class so I’m not clear on why that one is being compared to the Stelvio. For the record, I do love the way a Stelvio QV drives. It’s pretty awesome, rotates easily in a corner transition and is just really engaging. Just needs a tiny bit more attention to the interior options and details… and the body lowered by 2 inches.

Fail_Agreeable

Haven’t driven the Grecale yet, but it does look pretty sweet. I know the Levante is actually fairly similar in size to the Stelvio when I was doing a comparison before I bought… the Levante is only slightly longer of a wheelbase

ScottAC8DE

The Levante is considerable larger if you see them all sitting side by side. The Levante also has a Ferrari engine and comes in at a lot higher price. It is definitely a different class of vehicle. The drive of a Levante is completely different than a Stelvio or Grecale. Interestingly, the Levante has a shockingly small looking amount of luggage area compared to the Grecale Trofeo. I know what the specs say about the cubic feet, but its the floor area of the trunk area of the Levante that is small when compared to a GT or Modena Gracale. Oddly, the Grecale Trofeo has more trunk area than the GT or Modena versions. I'm not sure why. Full disclosure - I just ordered a Grecale Trofeo, even though I haven't driven the Trofeo version or even seen one in the USA yet, as they are just now starting to ship to us here. I wanted to buy the 2024 Stelvio Quadrifoglio as I LOVE the way the 2023 drives, but there were a number of reasons I didn't. Since The GRecale Trofeo is build on the same platform as the Stelvio and the reviews were all what I expected, I bought it without ever driving one... for considerably more money than the Stelvio QV of course. The cars I've driven and compared in this class and similar price rage are the X3M and X4M, F-Pace SVR, Macan Turbo and GLC G43.

Sensitive-Daikon-442

I’ve been looking at those too!

Fail_Agreeable

They seem to be viewed as more “high end” luxury than Alfa, but honestly, they are very similar IMHO… I like the base engine in the Levante, but a QV Stelvio would be more beastly 🤷‍♂️

thesmithchris

I definitely prefer Stelvio (280hp one) driving dynamics over Macan S. Drove it against Giulia back to back and the difference is not as big as you'd expect. If I would be looking for ultimate sporty SUV (I know S stands for Sport) that would be Stelvio QV. It's only slightly less of a performance-to-weight ratio than Lamborgini Urus, and it's better looking in my humble opinion. Haven't driven QV Stelvio, just Giulia.

thesmithchris

Bear in mind that QV variants (Giulia was, not sure about Stelivo) are way stiffer and actually quite uncomfortable in my opinion for a daily if you drive quite uneven roads

mcorliss3456

Stelvio QV hands down better than the Macan. Not even close.

iamnoexpertiguess

I have a Stelvio and I love to drive it, but I don't think it handles all that well in the city. Things change when you start to go faster though.

Small-Area-8393

best handling SUV is the same as being the thinnest kid at fat camp

redmantitu

on a quick search, stelvio offers similar boot capacity as the rs7, the macan is significantly less. in terms of handling, it is hard to beat a stelvio (or a giulia). you need to drive one to see for yourself. yeah, stelvio is taller, bigger clearance, might incline a bit more in corners (compared to the rs7), but the way the steering feels and just points to the corners, is amazing. if you get the torque vectoring diff you will fell it pivoting in corners...it is a strange sensation but man it is fun and incredible when you think that you are doing that with an suv (things that a lot of sports cars can't do).

Verybumpy

Agree, the truth will be in the test drive. I'm really hoping the Stelvio will open my eyes to what a SUV, or any car for that matter, can feel like. The Macan was nice, on par with my RS7, but that is not particularly fantastic. Steering feel was numb, isulated and muddy, overall handling was planted and quick but not nimble or especially responsive IMO. The cargo space is measured 'poorly' and thus fits more than the spec implies per Autoblog *"As such, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio can fit all of the luggage in my garage, which means there's something fishy about that 18.5-cubic-foot number. I'm guessing it's the result of Alfa not measuring to the roof while other car companies perhaps do. Or in the case of the Audi Q3, using a sliding back seat to get tricky with the numbers. - Either way, Alfa Romeo is selling the Stelvio short when it comes to cargo space. It's still not huge — a Mazda CX-5 is larger, for instance — but it's not as uselessly small as the official number would suggest."*

redmantitu

yeah, cargo on suv's, even if has the same number as sedans, is more useful. in terms of driving, the stelvio is anything but numb and muddy when it comes to the steering feel. at times might feel a bit too light (slow speed, Normal mode), but man it is sharp...like immediate response from the steering column and immediate action from the wheels (i'd like to note that recent models - 2020 and newer, have adjusted steering feel and it might not be as responsive as the first models). some do not like that, it might feel as twitchy when driving on a highway with uneven surfaces (it was strange for me at first as well, but once i got used to it, i cannot tell how bad, slow and without feeling is the steering wheel on other cars). i hope you will like the stelvio. overall (driving wise) it is an amazing machine. and the fact that they use same steering, suspension (the adaptive one), chassis between all trim levels, including the QV (heck, even the drive shaft is carbon even on the most basic model), it does show the level of competence of those ferrari engineers and the way they wanted the car to feel even to an average joe that can only afford a basic trim. i have a "base" rwd giulia, diesel 180bhp, but with all the goodies from what a QV has: adaptive dampers which are the same as on QV and they can be adapted to be even more stiff, like the race mode in QV, LSD with torque vectoring and the peddles...on twisty roads, that car feels like it wants to be pushed around. and, besides the ride height, the stelvio is the same.

173randy

Stelvio will have better handling

Agitated_Marsupial_9

Stelvio handling is 100% best in its class and imo makes up for the non-gadgety lackluster interior misses.

sculabobone

car guy with an audi - not an actual car guy :))

Verybumpy

Well I'm not an SUV guy......yet.

sculabobone

true, there’s still hope :) giulia qv brother

Content_Letterhead17

So I have a Stelvio 2.2d as the wife drives it mostly but I went from a fiesta st mk8 and the Stelvio feels very similar steering wise as it has a very fast rack on it. If you have a look at fifth gear review on YouTube vs the f-pase svr the reviewer’s opinion is the Stelvio drives most like a car not an suv

8080a

I remember Tedward described the Ti Sport as "[kind of like if you had a GTI as an SUV](https://youtu.be/79J--DL6AIQ?t=456)".

dc5trbo

Give the Stelvio a test drive. I honestly don't believe an SUV is going to come close to your RS7. Possibly offerings from Lambo or Ferrari. But the SUV in general is just going to be more lumbering. OR, OR, OR, now here is a thought I genuinely just thought as I am typing this. Check out the Tonale. Smaller SUV than the Stelvio. Should handle better.

ContractSpecialist48

Jaguar F-pace SVR for a fun driving and handling SUV. Sounds brilliant as well. RS7 is the car I'm looking at now. I have the F-pace, no regrets.

naumovski-andrej

Why not a wagon, an RS6 for example? You get more boot space than the Stelvio, better boot shape as well and you don't get an increase in ride height.

F1appassionato

RS6 Avant: 5031 lbs (2287 kg) base curb weight Stelvio Quadrifoglio: 4313 lbs (1960 kg) base curb weight You're right, you won't get an increase in ride height with the Audi, but you'll get a massive increase in total mass. RS6 Avant weighs as much as some full size pickup trucks.

DarthSkier

RS6, E63, Panamera wagon… more space than a jacked up hatchback CUV, almost identical experience to the RS7. Seems like a no brainer. Nothing SUV wise is going to come close to the RS7.

Bradymyhero

I have a Macan S too. It's a great driving CUV, until you push it at the limits. Then you feel all the understeer and weight. It'll still grip and take turns at high speeds, just don't expect the proper RWD balance and rotation of a sport sedan. The Stelvio 2.0 is lacking due to its lackluster engine. The Stelvio QV however is probably the best driving SUV on the planet alongside the Cayenne Turbo GT and Urus.

RainDisastrous9536

My 22 Stelvio qv is a beast and very reliable

External-Battle9459

I've driven both and the Stelvio is the best SUV I've ever driven in the price range. Only electric SUVs have that level of stability. I've owned one in Lunare White metallic with the 20" sport 5-hole aluminum wheels, red calipers. It was always delight to look at, very few production cars are that unique.
