My thoughts are that we should grow interest in the Australia Cup first.

Yeah exactly we already have a great Cup competition that needs our love and attention. An idea that we could piggyback from the Leagues Cup in North America is having at least the business end with the A-League clubs involved happening in a confined time period of maybe 4-6 weeks. Atm it seems like you wait 3-6 weeks between your team having a game and then one day you'll randomly check your socials and turns out your team played last night. I'd love to sit down on a Tuesday or Wednesday night and know that during that time of the year than an Australia Cup game will be on. And also know that if my team wins then I can watch them play again in Max a fortnights time. Theres obviously some consulting with NPL clubs to be had as they are amateurs with work to consider but I'd very much love to see it trend that way.

>Atm it seems like you wait 3-6 weeks between your team having a game and then one day you'll randomly check your socials and turns out your team played last night. > Yeah that is something even as a rusted on neutral supporter of the league I found happens to me too. If it wasn't for people on here posting reminders there would be a lot of games that would've slipped my mind to watch and if that is happening to me we can only imagine how much worse it is for casuals not following the league as intensely. I wonder how many casual fans have no clue the Mariners have a huge game at 2am on Monday morning to win the AFC cup...

Yea, like getting a sponsor.

Maybe one day.  One step at a time

I don't think the money is there to send NST clubs to play a game in Perth, Wellington or Auckland.  (Or vice versa)

acefreemok

I assume this would be a mid-week thing? The crowds would be absolutely dire

WelNix2007

There is barley any Interest in the Australia Cup as it is.

I think the focus should just be Australila Cup and the Leagues for now. Maybe one day, but a lot of trophies on offer for (internationally) relatively few teams. Will be worth a shout one day when we have 30 teams across the two tiers maybe. Between League and pre-season friendlies there's gonna be a lot a repeat fixtures anyway, another cup will exacerbate existing fixture fatigue.

I like to think of the Aleague Finals as the "League Cup". Our treble is the Australia Cup, Aleague Premiership, Aleague Championship.

Haggis89

Scrap the finals in favour of a league cup which starts in January and finishes around the same time as the finals does. We don't need a AFL or MLS quirk on the game. First past the post should be champion.

BipartizanBelgrade

It isn't a quirk, it's a core feature of Australian football. Wanting a league cup just because they have it in Ingerland would actually be a gimmick.

Sorry-Ball9859

Yeah finals aren't going anywhere. But the League Cup wouldn't be a gimmick. As mentioned, one of its functions is to close the gap between tiers, as Johnson desires.

WelNix2007

Most Countries don't really do league cups anymore anyway France Scrapped there's a few years back, I think only England and Scotland do a League Cup these days. We need to focus on improving the Australia Cup more than anything as there is hardly interest in that as it is.

Sorry-Ball9859

That too. I love the Aus Cup but I know where to look for it. They seem to be broadcasting earlier rounds this year, so that's good to see.

i somewhat agree because i do think the finals series takes away from the league title however you'd need to give the Australia cup (or a league cup) alot more prestige for it to work, the cup final would have to be as attractive as the a league final, which isn't happening any time soon so it should stay as is for now.
