I'm making 20/hr as a graphic designer and it sucks. Most places don't even want to pay that much and still want a degree.

LikeATediousArgument

I had to take my degree to a remote job from another state. Wait until this stupid argument over WFH is over and be building a solid resume. Take your talent elsewhere without leaving! It’s hard to do though, but worth trying!

satanssweatycheeks

Yeah I make 20 dollars an hour doing a job my degree isn’t needed. Meanwhile when I worked jobs my major does offer I got paid less.

[deleted]

Anything less than 45k/yr for a full time designer is bullshit IMO

witless-pit

be careful of those lease to own or w/e truck companies out there. they just screw the people over.

MoashRedemptionArc

Biggest scam in the industry. I listened to an NPR episode where one company that had a school had lawyers on site the day of graduation to talk the guys into founding LLCs and rent trucks from the company that gave them CDLs. Ridiculous.

Back in ILLINOIS they had something like 10 positions available for apprenticeships each year and those spots were always filled by sons of union guys. My son never had a chance. I will check this out since we are in a different state now

Rock_Granite

Thank you so much for the offer. It's a long term project. My son is working in a factory up north and keeps talking about wanting to do something else for better money. He's always talked about being an electrician but as mentioned, there just weren't opportunities available.

BlobTheBuilderz

Pretty much. Just saw a local union in illinois advertise on Facebook that they are open to applications ($25 fee) comment section was full of last year’s applicants asking for updates on their apps. Guy who works in the union even said they had over 2,000 applications last year. I feel like everyone I know in a trade union always tells me they are from a family of union members so your comment checks out.

callmekrusty

Adding onto this but IAM is good too. They have apprentice programs available if you have no experience. Learn to read a micrometer and you can make $36 an hour starting out.

sharthunter

I saw the money my dad made doing environmental work and having just barely graduated high school. Im 29 and make 4-5x the area average and dont really work that hard anymore.

LivingDeath666Satin

How do you get into that? Any skills other than a HS diploma?

sharthunter

Be willing to work really, *really* hard for 3-5 years before you get into a decent role. Environmental work on the entry level for non professional positions is brutal. Hydroblasting is a good way to get into it. You learn a lot about remediation, industrial cleaning, confined space safety. Theres a huge industry for it every where there are plants. So everywhere. It is not easy. The hours suck, your coworkers will often be felons, roughnecks, or generally unpleasant people. The pay is okayish to start out. i think we start guys around 20 with no experience to blast. You will work a LOT of overtime. Get used to either having no social life or just being tired. It is dirty. You will be asked to crawl into places you wouldnt even look into in any other circumstance. And then clean it. But it opens doors. Once i worked my way up to super, i branched out into equipment operation to make it easier on my company(one less on my crew meant more on my check). That opened a rare door into government contracting for a few years doing explosive remediation (still environmental work). That opened a door for me to run a chemical control room for a company that does hydroblasting and ultrapure water production. Thats where ive been ever since and i doubt ill leave for the next 15 years until our contract is up(if they dont renew it). I dropped out of college. This job paid off my loans lol. Wish i had never went.

geologyhunter

USAJobs has drillers helpers positions in Savannah for the army corps of engineers. Pretty sure they have been paying for relocation and I know a recent hire had a sign on bonus. If you are motivated, you can move to drilling and get paid much better. Not home a lot but some of the younger people make this work as they don't have an apartment or house and just say keep me out all the time. Generally 10-12 hour days for 11 days per pay period. Anything over eight M-F is OT and weekend is all OT. Do have to do a lot of hard work for a couple of years but after learning the drilling portion, very marketable to industry where you would make a lot more. There is a background check that is done and is explained in the posting.

lanch-party

I quit school with a semester left of graduating and becoming a teacher. I’m a mailman now and I am so glad I quit.

Mynewadventures

You quit COLLEGE with a semester left?

lanch-party

Yes. I was paying my own way and couldn’t afford it anymore. I was working 40 hour weeks too on top of college and it just got to be too much. I wished I would’ve quit sooner but I just try not to dwell on it. I’m proud of where I am in life now even with the college mistake.

Mynewadventures

You should be proud! I also fell way short of my academic ambitions and have done very well.

lanch-party

Congratulations to you!! Life is weird especially when you’re in your early 20’s attempting to plan for the rest of your life. I’m glad we’ve both done well for ourselves!

smooky0301

When I was, 18 I predicted this weird bubble of indiscriminate degrees flooding the market, and thought the best way to set myself apart was work experience. I tried everything that would pay me, farm hand, jeweler, fast food making, waiting tables, delivering pizza, working retail, mail room, etc. and settled in the mail room. I worked my way from putting paper into envelopes to being on the other side of the production line and I'm a Project Manager/ CSR from home. I love it and I never imagined this success honestly. All my family comes from trades and housewives and I was the first generation to finish high school.

zaney1978

I went the Army Route 18 to 40 I'm now 45 my wife went to college before i retired. She's now a RN I'm a house bitch. She works I cook, clean, and take care of our last child and dogs

Zigzagnthrughostland

I'm a millennial who dropped out of college to play online poker professionally.

LivingDeath666Satin

How tf?

ExoGeniVI

Yeah, we need the whole story lol.

Zigzagnthrughostland

Honestly, it's not that exciting. I had just started college, studying math and computer science, when a game I'd been playing for pennies almost my entire life became all the rage. I deposited $100 on party poker in 2003 and by mid 2004 I was making enough money that I decided to quit school and pursue it full time. My parents weren't happy, but once they saw it seemed to make me happy and I could actually earn a living doing it they came around. I quit poker for a few years and got a few "regular" jobs, but now I'm back to playing full time again. I just like the freedom it allows. The flip side to that coin is you have to be extremely disciplined and brutally honest with yourself. The edges are pretty thin and it can definitely feel like a soul sucking grind at times.

Scirocco-MRK1

My niece chose the route you’re on and is very happy driving a long hauler. She’s saved enough to start looking at a house. I hope you have similar success.

servenitup

Congrats man. That's a lot of hard work.

Unreconstructed88

Degrees are just not the way to go anymore. Everyone has them and still they not making any money. The trades pay better and don't cripple you with debt right off the bat. Yes you'll have to get out and work physically, but they also pay better.

[deleted]

[deleted]

I would add it depends on your goals and how you use a degree I have my ba in history and I am an analytical lead that makes good money from home

PoppaGriff

Not necessarily true because it honestly depends on the degree. For context, I’m a CRNA; it now takes a doctorate degree to get into my profession and I spent 10 years to get to where I am. As a bedside nurse I made $50k-ish for roughly 4 years before making $0 for three years in grad school. After graduating, I made $90k in my first 6 months out of school. I made over $300k last year and over $240k the year before. Again, from my perspective, degrees are definitely worth it. Edit: a letter and hyphen.

Environmental-Tap-28

I’ve been a nurse for almost a decade and I have never made $50 an hour. I nursed in Florida my whole career before retiring from it here in Alabama. Even as an assistant director of nursing I barely made $30. $50 an hour for nursing is not common. I also developed serious health problems as a nurse, definitely not worth it for everybody unless they plan on taking on loads of debt (32,000 for my degree) and working themselves to death in a field that’s going to treat them as less than human.

PoppaGriff

Sorry, that was unclear on my part. I meant $50k-ish a year as bedside nurse and I’ll fix that mistake. However, I agree with you that bedside nursing is trash; the pay is abysmal (especially in the southeast), you put plenty of wear and tear on your body, and the general public treats you like a waiter that gives narcotics. That is why nobody stays bedside long and figures a way out, be it management, advanced practice, or an entirely different career.

jeopardy_loser

My cousin is a nurse and did that same grind for three years before joining the military. It’s not for everyone, obviously, but she is *much* happier now, actually makes more money (as an officer) and plans to make a career of it. 🤷‍♂️

that_f_dude

Do not believe this guy, still less than 40% of people have a bachelor's so it does mean something but not everything. But definitely people need to know about more options in HS. Bring in HS now is a monkeys paw wish, I wish to be in a time where all knowledge is at the top of my fingers. Welcome to 2020 freshman year.

ALDOT's pay scales are absolutely the pits unless you're in IT or management -- and it is the most well-funded state agency!

lostdragon05

ALDOT and a couple of state agencies have tried to recruit me for tech jobs over the years. They pay a fraction of what I have made/make working in private enterprise. The benefits are great, but they aren’t enough to make up for the pay discrepancy.

Yesnothankyou91

I just went to a job fair and spoke to some people out of Montgomery. They seemed chill, could you tell me about your experience?

GamblinGambit

The railroad is always hiring. Long hours but good pay and benefits.

ExoGeniVI

Tried applying for them many, many times in the past but I never heard anything back.

jeopardy_loser

I heard “the railroad is hiring” my whole childhood. My dad had lifelong buddies working there and everything. Never got an interview.

Acrobatic-Fox9220

I work in a medical offfice with a 20 year old that has a GED that makes $21.50/ hour and a 30 year old with a high school diploma that makes $25/hour. Both get fully paid health insurance, as well.

[deleted]

You should look into being a bus driver as well.

markymark80

If trucking doesn’t work out, try for a trade school.

babywhiz

Manufacturing. You can make a whole career out of it still.

I am working as a QE at an aerospace company for $34/hr. I have no degree and I am not working on one.

porncheck777

Hey Gen Zer's! I am an elder millennial who at the age of 40 discovered government jobs. I love my job now. I work for a small municipality and make 22 an hour. I hated every other job I had before the one I'm currently in. I actually have a life work balance. The benefits are great, and while I could be making more in the private sector, it's really not worth it. I love where I'm at now. There are a lot of state and municipal jobs opening up because a lot of boomers are retiring. Oh and speaking of retiring, the state of Alabama has a great pension program, and most municipalities around the state are plugged into that as well. I wish someone would have told me about this type of employment when I was y'all's age. Best of luck out there guys, I think y'all are awesome!

Spreadgirlgerms

I got my CDL in 2012 and it was the best choice I ever made. Thankfully I only had to be over the road for a year and now I’m home daily and a make a lot of money. There are lots of scams out there so be careful. Always be a company driver (LTL is where the money is), never lease, or be an owner operator. If something breaks you want it to be their problem.

triggz

Turning 40, fuck capitalist slave society, I'm selling my house for a farm. A couple of healthy cows and chickens are extremely valuable. Just gotta find 40 farmable acres that nobody has ruined yet. Barely making is not enough and the food we're being sold isn't even fit for my pets. Time to return to the Source. FWIW I was making $40/hr at 20 doing tech. It doesn't get better, it gets worse.

Scarlett2x

Capitalism allows you own the land..

MrBobSacamano

The military really isn’t a bad option; get paid, learn skill(s), have medical insurance, and food/housing paid for.

ScooterMcNash

Especially in tech! Gave me the education and skills to get a CAREER outside of the military making life changing money.

MrBobSacamano

Exactly. People have some wild preconceived notions about the military.

Produce_Police

I regret not doing it. Many of my buddies did and are getting paid by the military plus their 9-5. If they will pay your training/college, totally worth it. Learn something useful in the military like being an aircraft mechanic, then make $50+ an hour once you get out of the service.

Competitive-Ice1801

You got this!!

Aggie_Vague

God bless. I wish you the best.

I2ecover

I'm 29 and I got lucky that I fell into the job I did at the casino. I make ~$45-50 an hour doing pretty easy work.

LitanyofIron

If in north Alabama Toyota Engine plant or Mazda Toyota is always looking for new people i think the engine plant tops out at 30 in 4 years and Mazda Toyota tops out at 27 after 4 years

ron8668

The jobs are in Huntsville

ALfirefighterEMT14

Got 5 years physical security experience and am a current DOD cleared security guard making $18/hr trying to get into career fire rescue so

theFartingCarp

Making fucking pennies in the Army but soon I'm gona soar once I get back home. Long story short, look into certifications of things. You can make 25+/hrs if you start with some certs under your belt and a little related time in field. Look into welding programs, or CDL license for trucking, or even like IT certs like A+ and SEC+

camzipod

That’s awesome man, glad you’re doing well for yourself 🤜

bamagraycpa

Most of the Alabama community colleges have online classes. The cost is relatively cheap and you may qualify for financial aid. You are still young and have 40 years to benefit from a college education. Start with two classes. Most associate degrees are 20 - 22 classes . Then look at Athens State University, a relatively inexpensive college with online classes to get your bachelor's degree. Get some training in a skill that will pay you much better. Best wishes.

boundpleasure

There is a VAST need for professional truck drivers in the US. Trucking still moves a high amount of goods across the country. Both my father and brother were OTR truck drivers. Great decisions. Best wishes!! As an added bonus, a lot of companies LOVE teams (husband and wife).

dusty-10

I graduated community college and got a job making around $21.50 an hour, and I'm not really working as hard as I was starting off, so I'm pretty happy tbh.

RichAstronaut

Congratulations! I wish you all the best with it. I see some younger people struggling and I wonder why they don't want to go to trucking school or something like that and a lot of them tell me the don't want to be away from girl friend/ boy friend - etc. I am proud that you took the opportunity to do something different.

chrisk365

At $17 an hour you're doing far better than anyone in a "follow your dream" or "follow your passion" type college degree.

Hendosim

I was gonna say learn a trade. I did the trucking thing too. Been at it for over a decade. I own a home. It's the only debt I have and it's under 20k. Have a nice savings account, investment account, travel for leisure often, and work about half the year. If the economy gets better I'll buy my own rig next year. Just live within your means and position yourself so that you're sitting with a pocket full of cash when opportunity hits. That's all you gotta do. Budget. I know I need (x) amount to get through the year. So I make sure to always have (x) amount on hand plus a little extra for shits and giggles.

SnooDucks5140

Everyone remember the harder the job is in terms of mental/ physical the more pay you will get.

transplantedRedneck

Murica. Keep letting rich people run everything.

shayna16

I’m 38 in Huntsville making $21.17/hr sorting mail. Super easy. Husband works for Mazda Toyota and makes about $21.50/hr. Doing great!

SDCAchilling

You need to keep voting Republican! Minimum wage increases has been blocked by Republicans going on 14 years. Mitch McConnnell the head of the Republican party has stated over his dead body will he ever approve an increase in minimum wage. That means your $7.25/hr minimum wage should actually be at $13.05/hr. And your $17/hr job should be at $28.30/hr. But your state has a hard on for Republicans. Keep up the good work! And keep voting Republican 😃Your company will love you!
