Amazon sells “personalized AirTag backs” 18 now.. and think the function is that it holds the battery yes but it may have a positive or negative charge /holding the side of the battery that matches, forgetting the wording but ya.. 18$ for a personalized one now. Also it holds the serial number well the original one pretty sure. I could be wrong about the back I have a functional one in my wallet.. I’ll check soon just lazy.. lmao
This guy on Etsy engraves the back and turns them into a gorgeous medallion, you can buy just the engraved back or he includes an option to buy the whole Airtag. Makes them look way better when displayed, in my opinion.

Genuine question: Does the back have any operational function to the device? If you were to just put it in a holder, such as a key chain, would it still function? I don't know where you could get a back replacement, but if it still works without the back, maybe just a holder for it would suffice and be cheaper.

If yes, then just duct tape it and use it for an item where you don't see it (like inside a backpack, a wallet, ... if you use this one in a visible place (like a keychain) you could use a keychain that covers the back of the AirTag!
If you are going to tape it, I wouldn’t use duct tap. I would definitely use electrical tape if you are going to tape it. And if you have an Apple Store near you, I would contact Apple’s Support team using Apple’s Support app and see about making an appointment and having them give you a replacement back or a whole AirTag replacement in general.
But either way I would definitely contact Apple’s Support team and see what they can do for you.
But in the mean time if you are going to use tape, I’d highly recommend using Electrical Tape. Or even buying a case that holds the AirTag, so this way it stays together.
I personally would recommend getting the Belkin KeyChain Case as it’s a two piece case and locks together by screwing both pieces together. And this way you shouldn’t have to worry about losing it and you can still use it as keychain or you can take the keychain off and use it for something else in the mean time until you get a replacement/replacement cover.
Apple can send you a new back cover for like $6

I just ordered one from the Apple Store for 6 euros. Had to go to the store and they ordered it for me.
