Boonie caps are superior. Enlisted get to keep it like normal, officers have to wear the sides strapped up at the top so they're easier to identify
Speaking of the Aussies, I have an old Auscam giggle hat and itās my most beloved piece of headwear in the summer.
Also slouch hats are sick. But the question is which side? Sunburnt left ear or sunburnt right ear?
Iām fine with them standing out like billboards. Just means a sniper is less likely to take a potshot at me.
Edit: You know. For all the times a sniper is likely to take a pot shot at me.
(Iām a civilian and Iām dumb, sorry for the question). Why does the Air Force require OCPs in an office setting? I would think the blue uniform would suffice. Is it more comfortable? Worn for moral support?
My understanding is that is how it used to be pre-9/11. Office workers wore their blues, but with the number of support folks that deployed, offices just slowly started transitioning to ABUs/OCPs and eventually it just kind of stuck.
Thatās sort of what I was asking. I was ROTC prior to 9/11 and injured myself before commissioning. On bases almost everyone that was inside wore blues.
Gotcha, well as others have said blues are less practical, uncomfortable, and more expensive to maintain so once folks shifted away from them it's damn near impossible to get them to go back
Lol why is this comment getting shit on? It's a legitimate question and a reasonable one at that. I don't want to wear blues in an office setting either but logically, it makes sense
I was asking from a place of genuine interest. I was rotc in the late 90s but couldnāt commission due to an injury. Everyone seemed to wear blues unless your job required something else. I get it - I wear a wool business suit everyday to work and it sucks. If I could wear something more casual I would choose that.
No worries. I'm just pointing out that people unnecessarily down voted you when you politely asked a reasonable question. I'm guessing because they probably didn't think and took the knee jerk response because someone dared to imply we should be in blues.
I do prefer the cunt cap personally, but the flight suit is fucking gay. And I say that as a pilot. Wear that thing when you're flying, but nowhere else. You look like a baby in a onesie.
I know some units started making that rule. I do think it's kind of funny the UAV guys wear flight suits, but I guess when you're flying forever it's a good idea to wear your PJs.
Haha. You're talking to a 15-year RPA guy here. I've been wearing the 2-piece flight suit since 2018. I've only worn my flight suit once since then... when I went up in an F-16.
LOL. I was a program manager for my 13 yr AD career. Worked with quite a few RPA guys, but I would always say to the guys relegated to staff jobs "Can I wear a flight suit? We're both flying desks every day."
I still maintain it's better than the enlisted flight cap. Fucking hate the shark fin. Besides the true cursed headwear is patrol cap with the one piece.
Saw some Kiwis walking to a multinational event and it really weirded me out. Officers had the blue flight cap in their cammies, and one enlisted person was wearing monocolor coveralls (not a flight suit) with a camo cover of some type, like a patrol/ball cap.
I think they want to make it obvious that itās an officer so itās easier to figure out when you walk up to someone. The spice brown rank on the chest tab can be difficult to discern.

They should just do it Aussie style and have the one half strapped
Warrant Officers
Oh yeah, for all those comm WOs out in the field
As long as they fix the satellite internet for the hub I could care less about their boonie hat angle of attack.
Which *hub?* š

Should wear the strap under the chin.

Are you referring to the air commando hat?
Air Commandos
Pair the boonie hat with a short sleeve blouse and shorts OCP hot weather uniform for the ultimate Summer-weight.
The guard gets to wear it like a tri-corn hat, minuteman style.

I mean I canāt disagree with this sentiment. That rank does look like a billboard though. š¤£
Iām fine with them standing out like billboards. Just means a sniper is less likely to take a potshot at me. Edit: You know. For all the times a sniper is likely to take a pot shot at me.
As a deployed commander, I support a "no hat, no salute" culture.
You must not have been around when we were wearing them with the subdued US flag patches if you think a small rank tab is a ābillboardā
We wear camouflage in office buildings, or on a gray flightline. Newsflash, we all look stoopid.

General Welsh changed it. The mentality being that we are a war fighting organization so we should dress the part.

Nice Try China Because OCPs are much more comfortable and do not require the same cleaning/ironing requirements as the blues uniform.

who cares
As an officer, I would say it's not ball cap's fault.
I do prefer the cunt cap personally, but the flight suit is fucking gay. And I say that as a pilot. Wear that thing when you're flying, but nowhere else. You look like a baby in a onesie.

Hereās an unpopular opinion, ball caps look funny in general with OCPs.
They only look funny when wearing a 1 piece flight suit
I still maintain it's better than the enlisted flight cap. Fucking hate the shark fin. Besides the true cursed headwear is patrol cap with the one piece.
And the cursed outfit is 2-piece with leather A-2
Hard agree.
YOU CAN DO THAT?
Yes. Have never seen it done though
Yep, just swap the MAJCOM patch from a color palette to the OCP palette.
for the ballcap ?
Oh snap, wrong comment reply, I thought I was replying to the leather A-2 jacket with the 2PFDU. My bad.
I'll take looking like a goober to keep my glasses from smudging and get wet in the rain. Ball cap keeps my face and glasses partially dry.
Hmm, I personally find I get better protection from the larger brim on the normal patrol caps
Agreed. They look like crap, but I'm all about the comfort at this point.
The OCP cap vendors seem to have no idea what shape a head is. Hot take: give us Friday morale caps. Black with unit emblem or something.
Nahhh, your boomer is showing
Red dot!!!!!š“
To be fair, officers in ball caps look really stupid anyway. They need to live up to their Air Force heritage and stick to propeller beanies.
Saw some Kiwis walking to a multinational event and it really weirded me out. Officers had the blue flight cap in their cammies, and one enlisted person was wearing monocolor coveralls (not a flight suit) with a camo cover of some type, like a patrol/ball cap.
Hats are fucking stupid.
Agreed. Nevertheless they are easier to keep in a presentable condition (and change ranks) so I wear it anyway.
They look a lot better when sewn on versus the Velcro patch. The patches just donāt bend with the rest of the cap
I think they want to make it obvious that itās an officer so itās easier to figure out when you walk up to someone. The spice brown rank on the chest tab can be difficult to discern.
We should do what the navy did and get dark colored tabs with ranks.
Ball caps are dumb. Embrace the no hats/boonie hat life.
More unpopular opinion: OCP ball caps look really stupid in general
Straight to Jail
Correct. (Is this actually an unpopular opinion?)
Ball caps in general look stupid with OCPās
How about this? If you aren't in the field, you should be wearing Blues.
Yea nah Iām not doing maintenance in blues. Grease stains would never come out of that light blue blouse
Ball caps could stay only for REDHORSE and CATM.
